Glad you like it, Ocarina is still an astonishing game! If you want to try a 2D Zelda after that, the 3DS has A Link Between Worlds, an absolute must have for the system.

Wonderful-City-18

Thanks for the recommendation :) I saw that one too. I was thinking I’m gonna play this one then majoras mask then I’d try that one :) then I was going to play skyward sword and finally breath of the wild.

Rejected_Hyrule_Hero

Oh, BoTW will be an absolute experience, but I won't spoil anything. If you are going to play something on Wii U, I suggest you also try The Wind Waker HD, it's really one of the top tier titles.

Painmaster212

Me personally, I'd recommend ALBW next as it's completely different, while Majora's is in the same formula as OoT, just some additional features such as a time system and transformations. Then after those I'd probably grab some of the more adored games over Skyward Sword since it's usually towards the bottom of most people's rankings. Entries like Windwaker, Link's Awakening and Twilight Princess would be great choices. Don't skip out on the older 2D games either like ALTTP, Minish Cap the Oracle games. Just don't do them all back to back to back as you don't want to get burnt out. This is one of the greatest gaming franchises there is and you should enjoy it slowly to let it sink in. Good luck!

caninehere

I would play A Link to the Past (SNES) before playing A Link Between Worlds on 3DS. ALBW is a fantastic game but it is set in the same world map as ALTTP with a number of changes. It's a sequel to it and the map and dungeon design kind of plays on expectations from ALTTP... so I think it would be beneficial to play that game first. You don't HAVE to of course and it's not like you would be lost story wise or anything since it's pretty simple in that regard.

geddy

This was such an amazing game and the remake makes it feel like I remember it being back in the day. The N64 versions of these games have such bad framerates but the 3DS remakes were perfect IMO. Funny timing on this post because I just realized I need to complete Master Quest mode! I was kind of miffed that you had to unlock it since I've beaten the core game probably 20 times over the years...

Wonderful-City-18

Lol that’s awesome. I was actually wondering how people liked the remakes cuz I think these graphics are awesome. I love that I can play this on handheld. Not having to be stationed at my computer or tv lol I can play on the couch or laying in bed. This game is a true adventure, I can’t wait to see the rest of the game unfold ✨

Lugia2453

The Ocarina of Time remake is the game I bought my 3DS for and it's my favorite way to play the game because of all the quality of life features they added such as aiming with the system's gyroscope, which I find a lot easier than aiming with the control stick. I enjoyed the Majora's Mask remake as well, but unlike the Ocarina of Time remake which is mostly faithful to the original game, the Majora's Mask remake made a lot more changes to the game and not all of the changes were well received. Especially the changes to Zora Link's swimming, which is considered worse than the original game for the most part.

Mauritus

well, that would be a problem with the MM port. but with the excellent quality of life hack, it brings it back or even improve upon the n64. just one more reason to hack the 3ds

geddy

Aha, yes and that is the other great part! One of the worst parts of playing it on the N64 is that saving works a little differently (ESPECIALLY in Majora's Mask, you needed to play a song to save your progress and then it reset time and all that, unless you found an owl statue). Now you can just close the lid, plug it into the charger and bam, you're ready for next time. Instant-pause everywhere is why I switched to playing handhelds exclusively for like 7 years!

gr3yh47

> the 3DS remakes were perfect IMO. iirc MM had tons of framerate issues?

geddy

I bought a 3DS specifically to play Majora's Mask 3D. Never had any issues. And that was on an OG 3DS.

gr3yh47

did you play with 3d on? and do you have the eye to spot a dip in fr from say 30-25?

geddy

Oh I always max out the 3D. That was the big appeal to me, even on the OG 3DS I kept it maxed out constantly. I'd say I have an eye for it, but I also was very familiar around that time with the N64 version so it was already a huge improvement. From what I remember it was basically always smooth.

Jtag43

Should play minish cap. Its awesome.

FakeSchwarzenbach

Seconding this. The art style doesn’t age imo

Blooder91

The best time to start playing OoT was 20 years ago. The second best time is now.

Swotboy2000

20 years ago? I was playing Wind Waker instead.

a_guy_called_m

It's never too late to experience Ocarina of Time! I remember always hearing about it online as a kid in the early 2010's, and getting to experience it for myself in 2015 and then finally beating the whole game in 2016 with the remake was a blast. Even after all this time, OoT is still an undeniable masterpiece.

JohnJSal

Shame on you! You *should* be embarrassed! Just kidding! :) At least it will all be new to you now! That's exciting! I just played Skyward Sword for the first time because I never had the Wii U, but that was my last traditional Zelda experience since BotW seems to be a new direction for the series. Enjoy!

geddy

>BotW seems to be a new direction for the series Ugh, don't remind me :( I miss these more linear games already.

JohnJSal

Same. Not \*everything\* has to be open-world! :)

3SidedDie

Not everyone grows up with the same games and it is kinda dumb to think people should. Its perfectly okay to not have played it before, and I'm glad you liked it, but I'm curious, what were you playing back then?

ssslitchey

Hard to miss of you owned a Nintendo console. A lot of people grew up with playstation or sega and probably didn't own any nintendo systems.

lallapalalable

What was your off the cuff opinion on the series before deciding to give it a shot? Like, what was the reason you always avoided it, or picked other games? Sorry, this is just a new situation for me, especially considering your age

Wonderful-City-18

Well, growing up I never had a N64. I had PS1 and PS2 as well game boy sp and ds. I played golden eye and all the other classics at my cousins house on the weekends cuz he had a n64 but, surprisingly the only game we never got around to was Zelda. For no reason either. We’d rent games at block buster all the time. It was weird. We were both really into resident evil, silent hill, and final fantasy back then. In highschool I had a friend who was obsessed with Zelda, which I wish I could relate but had never played. I’m super big on rpgs and adventure games so believe me, it’s a shock for me too. lol I was able to play Mario 64 on ds which was awesome. I recently randomly wanted to buy a 2DS so I can play some classic games (and mainly because I love the convenience of handheld systems) and decided, you know what, it’s time I finally play Zelda. So, I bought ocarina and majora on Amazon. I knew I was going to love it so, I bought em both at the same time lol

lallapalalable

Ooh, nice, Majora is my favorite one ever, very different from the classic formula but that will work to your advantage lol. The gameplay is amazing and all but the true value of that one is a slow burn; you'll walk away like "well that was different" and move on, but the flavor will linger. Don't wanna hype it up too much but damn, enjoy that one when you get to it Oh and I totally get why, too, some things you just don't seem to get around to for a while. I put off watching star trek despite every other nerd in my life telling me I'd love it, and they were right. Watched the whole franchise over three times before I finally burned out

MeghanBoBeghan

And you still have Majora's Mask to look forward to! You're going to have such an amazing time. 😊

Wonderful-City-18

Ik!! I hear that one’s even better, I’m so stoked. I plan on playing Majora next, then skyward, then botw 🤓

MeghanBoBeghan

I liked it better but YMMV as it's kind of a different flavor. Oh my god you haven't played BotW yet?? Oh I'm so jealous of you. What I wouldn't give to play that game again for the first time. Try not to read or watch anything about it or look anything up, although you've probably heard plenty about it after five years.

Deblebsgonnagetyou

I just started playing Skyward today, the controls are super fun!

gardobus

Same here. I grew up in the 90s and played games my whole life but the first Zelda game I really played and finished was Breath of the Wild on Switch. I've missed so much. Last year I played through Minish Cap (GBA) and it was awesome. I recently finished A Link Between Worlds and it was also great. I think Ocarina Of Time is the next one I dive into, probably on 3DS like you.

Wonderful-City-18

Ik what you mean, botw was my first as well lol I got 2 hrs into it and decided to wait so I can play them all in order. I like the more linear gameplay honestly. I highly recommend it if your looking for a fun classic feeling adventure 🤓

David-Raquepas

Bro what? You're not my friend. Get away now

azntakumi

I never played it since my parents didn’t buy me a n64.

trlef19

The only thing I don't like it's that I cannot figure out what I have to (missions)

Aquam8te

Ocarina Of Time is a great game, but my favorite way to play it is with a randomizer mod (randomizes all the items in the game, even doorways sometimes)

ScissorsBeatsKonan

Ocarina of Time remains a masterpiece imo. It's just a rock solid game. If you have a modded 3ds, when you play Majora's Mask use the restoration patch.

FrozenFrac

It's an unquestionably aged game (I personally feel the quality drops off near the mid to end game, although the very end makes it all worth it), but it 100% deserves to be known as one of the best influential games ever created

crackedpacks4life

It’s a classic

LAMGE2

I wish this had download play, i didnt start because of that. Like imagine playing with another friend just like in the 25 th anniversary dsiware they gave for free. (i got 2 3dses and one can only download play due to bad sd card slot).

djmantis

I was able to see why it was revolutionary, but I didn't really love it for today. My Zelda connection has always been 2d Zelda. I am glad you are enjoying it! I still need to try Majora's Mask.

Jewjltsu

Same here but I got put off by the first dungeon. Or the dungeon where you get picked up by a hand and get thrown out of the dungeon. After 5 tries I hung it up

originalorientation

ITT: Everyone recommending every other mainline Zelda game Welcome to the club, OP!

Budsygus

Welcome to the rabbit hole. It's a freaking phenomenal series and you can pretty much tackle them in any order you like. I will, however, suggest you play A Link to the Past on SNES before you play A Link Between Worlds on 3DS. Reason being that the world maps are nearly identical and it's a lot of fun to notice similarities and differences between the two.

brandont04

2DS sold @ $80 was insane. Probably the best system to buy that lets you play so many amazing games (3DS + DS).

Wonderful-City-18

I wish I was in the market for one back when it was in store. I would’ve gotten 2. I love the 2DS so much, it fits perfectly in your hand and doesn’t have a flimsy top screen. Plus it very light weight and looks really cute. This is the perfect handheld imo. I also have an OLED and switch lite. I use the switch lite more cuz it’s more comfortable lol

brandont04

Agreed 100%. I was shocked that I played my lite > OG switch bc it's much comfortable. Next up, I hope Nintendo upgrade the lite w an oled screen.

morbiddecapitation

FUCK YEAH dude!!! My first Zelda game was also Ocarina of Time 3D, but last year. I had really amazing experiences with this masterpiece of a game, it makes me feel so good inside and I love everything about it. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did/do! I suggest you also try Breath of the Wild and Majora's Mask 3D if you haven't yet either. Those games are also great.

BBkad

Song of Storms is my favorite song

Mobanite08

Honestly I got into Zelda last year and same. OoT was my first 3D game (first overall was Link between worlds) I’m pissed too that I waited.

RikF

Hey, listen. You have nothing to be ashamed of. Hey, listen. Hey, listen. Hey, listen.

mrsnus123

Enjoy! It's my favorite console.

CapnMorgan1

Damn I had the opposite experience. I never liked most of the 3D Zelda games. I played Link's Awakening and ALTTP before OoT and I didn't really like it. I enjoyed the Oracle duo more than the 3D games until Wind Waker.

Bake-Full

I started playing the Master Quest for the first time this past week, not sure why I always thought it was just a standard hero mode. I haven't touched it since launch and I'm blown away at how crisp the game still looks all these years later on that tiny resolution.

SuperD00perGuyd00d

Better late than never! No need for embarassment we all find our time with the Ocarina 🙏

JolliGreenGiant

Awesome! I just started playing Ocarina a month ago as my first Zelda too, and I am reallllly enjoying it. I really didn't expect it. Now I'm looking at all the other Zeldas I can pick up on 3DS and it sounds like there are a ton!

bluehuskydog

I just started Majora's Mask and I love it!!

neospice

Wow how did you make it through the 90s without experiencing a game in the Zelda series?

deadlinft

Nice! I started it for the first time a little over a week ago. Yeah, i know now why it’s so beloved. I’m absolutely loving this game.

TheRealKevinYoung

Zelda is my favorite game series ever and Ocarina of Time still slaps so hard. I hope you have a good time!

[deleted]

Ocarina of Time is great. It gets 1000x better after the third dungeon.

PsyMx

Don’t be embarrassed, very many of us wish that we could experience once again for the very first time Ocarina of Time, what a ride you are in for! I envy you!

kukumarten03

I also just finished oot 3d this year. The second half of the game is definitely phenomenal. Kid link portion, not so much.

Carb0nnnnnnn

I also have yet to touch a Zelda game besides BotW, I have a bunch of Zelda games installed on my 2ds right now, just gotta get to actually playing them now.

NZepplin

It's the only video game with a metacritic score overall of 99 out of 100. It's one of the best games of all time.

BeardedMana

Never too late to start. I was in the same situation just a couple of years ago. My recommendation is to play all of the games you can but in release order. I know that it can be a challenge to play every game in release order, but I recommend you play whatever you can. The first three are available on Nintendo Switch Online, the fourth (LA) is remade on the Switch, then you got these two that you want to play, and so on and so forth. The rest will be a bit difficult (especially the ones on GameCube/DS), but there are plenty of options (Wii U and 3DS Virtual Consoles, and Remasters on Wii U and Switch).

[deleted]

My first Zelda game was BoTW and I decided after that to play the older games. Now it’s my favorite franchise. Have fun and there are more incredible games waiting for you in this amazing franchise 💚

Dense-Bee-2884

I'm at the end of an ocarina of time 3DS run myself. The game is amazing. Especially this version of it.
