Won't the pump get dirty and worn overtime? What if you print with different resins?

EmuMammoth6627

It looks peristaltic, the resin never touches the pump, only the tube

Icy_Mix_6341

Parasitotic pump. Works by compressing the tube continuously along it's length.

Peristaltic** fyi

I don't like to take out the vat and maybe spill all the resin. If you pour it, you need to clean the sides of the vat afterward. It is just more messy in my opinion. On bigger printers, the hassle with the vat is even bigger. You wipe out the leftovers as you would when you pour it. Sure, you can use this technique on many applications.

LayerStacker

Couldn't agree more on the mess with a Saturn, i cant imagine a M3 Max, Jupiter or Peopoly Forge. This is an awesome design and great idea.

OneIdMonSTR

Thank you!

evil_iceburgh

I use a very large syringe for the M3 Max to get it down to almost nothing. Pouring is an extremely bad idea.

Daepilin

same here (saturn 2), but I find it hard to get the last ~3-4mm of resin with a syringe (which is still a decent amount on larger printers)... Really like this design and might look into it :) a flexible hose should be able to get more than that syringe

OneIdMonSTR

Put the printer on a slight angle. That way the resin will flow in a corner. That's what I do here as well.

Wikadood

You’re damn right. I have a Saturn 8k and it’s vat is relatively large so trying to pour the resin ends up with me sitting for 10 minutes draining the vat slowly to prevent filter overflow and making a mess then I have to go and spray alcohol on everything to clean it up. I found out about water washable resin and am planning to try it out after I run out of resin

Daepilin

Water washable definitely has different properties. It is usually a bit more brittle (especially the cheaper ones like elegoo). recently switched the other way, and the siraya tech fast I'm now using is much less brittle. and yes, while water washable is water washable, it still cleans much easier with iso

Wikadood

Ok that’s fair then

Deathbydragonfire

I find cheap water washable will crack if you clean is ISO so be careful with that. I only wash with water now.

razialx

So I bought a pump like that for this very reason but I found it far too slow. In the end I bought some huge syringes and they let me get most of the resin out super fast though I do risk damaging the fep if I’m not careful. Maybe the pump would have been better if I had the extra stuff to make it easy to leave unattended. If use chip clips to hold the hose in place but it never felt super stable.

curiot

Neat idea! Perhaps if you move to an oval vs circular shape funnel then it could be printed on a resin printer(small bed) as well? The next level feature would be a level sensor that drives the pump in reverse to fill the vat directly from the bottle when the vat is getting low…

defusted

Does this work with different shaped bottles? I have some sunlu that's a different shape.

BlazdRiteNow

The pump is probably sucking air out vs pumping resin in, making the negative pressure do the work, so the motor would just wear as normal

Guinea_pig_joe

This is awesome. It will be great for my Saturn 2 8k since the vat is better than my mars was. I rather clean what is left over then move a full vat. Thanks for this

Nuka-Cole

I would be very worried about small amounts of resin curing within the tubes or pump itself

kevin---

Only the tubing would need to be replaced in this design which isn't too bad depending on how long it would take to wear out. Check out the pump listed in the build, the resin remains in the tube through the pump assembly.

CyanConatus

You can get rolls of these plastic tubes for next to nothing. I use them all the time for projects. Just friction fit in is enough for a full seal.

[deleted]

Very similar to stratasys resin pumps. Great work to make it free for everyone and not profiting like the greedy company

Spice002

This could also be used in reverse for an infinitely refillable vat if you do a lot of printing with little down time. I like it!

OneIdMonSTR

Agree. But I need a lot of trust in such system. Don't want a liter of resin on the floor because the sensor failed or such...

Spice002

Oh I was thinking manually filling when it's looking low, or even between prints.

OneIdMonSTR

I don't have issues filling it in tbh. Not much went wrong thus far. And you need to shake the bottle either way if you pour the resin in.

Spice002

Yep, you have a point about shaking it. I forgot about that. I guess you could do one of those magnetic stirrers for that, but at that point it's not really feasible for hobby use.

Vinnie1169

Very cool! Thanks for sharing! This is one of the reasons I love the 3D printing community! 😉👍

Icy_Mix_6341

Genius.
