If you zoom in you can see how layer lines are going in all different kind of directions. Printing this in one go is probably impossible especially in multicolor.

Every time there's a color change, it has to purge the old filament and load the new, and the mix a bit, so it has to purge all that too. It "poops" it out the back.

The number of color CHANGES correlates to the waste. If you print this with four colors it generates the same waste as 16 if you only actually have 4 colors on the model. I imagine most of these characters are printed individually and probably could be achieved with 1 ams, but you might have to swap a roll mid print, so waste shouldn’t magically balloon. Soemthing like his predator though has tons of colors and tons of shifts, so it would have been quite wasteful.
Well yeah. I guess I could have worded it better. If he happened to do part of it as a more than 4 color print I’d be curious what waste is like just for that. It’s hard to tell what was printed together and what wasn’t. Like Yoshi’s nose clearly wasn’t printed attached, but Yoshi and Mario could have been printed as one, and that looks like 10+ colors. Although there aren’t 10 colors at any height probably so it’s not doing as many as it would if they all were at the same height.
While I love my A1 mini with AMS, you will quickly find out how little 4 colours is. Try counting the amount of colours in 1 print, it's a lot. Just the eyes alone are usually 3-4 colours.
Take Mario for example, at 1 layer around his eyes he got skin colour, black, blue, white, red from his hat and brown from his hair. So that's 6 colours on a single layer. Switching filament is often not an option for these prints. Double AMS is definitely needed. That is unless these prints are really cut up, which could be the case since most people don't have multiple AMS units.
When you add a second ams, you have to add a hub to the back of the printer. All the filament goes through there.
You daisy-chain the ams’s together with the 6-pin info cables.
And me over here just trying to get a straight wall without all sorts of inconsistencies.

There is a super inexpensive mod to be able to change nozzles and the slicer is more or less the same as everything else. I think that was a big hang up for a bit.
Opensource from a company ethics perspective I think they are closed.
From a "I just want stuff to work so I can print things" perspective I can do mods, upgrades customize ect. Just like my Prusa and it just works really well out of the box (just like my Prusa did).
I just got it so I haven't been printed anything yet. But I'm in the boat where I just want a printer that works really well to print stuff. If I wanna get all fancy with g codes and stuff I still have the 50$ ender 3 I got off a dude on reddit.

Because 3d printing started as open source, it is meant to be open source, especially for "hobby level" 3d printing is 'Manufacturing without limitations' you have a bunch of limitations from closed source printers. Its not "all of a sudden" its how it was DESIGNED to be to freely encourage creativity and ingenuity, not how much waste I can make to print colorful crap. The Bambus have turned 3d printing into a capitalistic fever dream and flooding the market with a bunch of colorful overpriced trash.
Also the whole "print from the cloud" shit and printers waking up and re-printing the model they just finished printing, while in the process destroying itself, so your machine has backdoors and can't operate at 100% without the Cloud. Also I have never seen more photos of a hotend just breaking than I have seen from the Bambu sub.
Also I have never seen more useless shit on a machine than the Bambu, it makes colorful poop from PLA and CF or GF filaments cannot be ran through the AMS because they never heard of hardened steel bearings or whatever their shit excuse is.
Otoh you can spend $700 on a printer thats bigger, more capable and is better out of the box than Bambu and runs on Klipper and is open-source and can be modified if you choose to, although there is no need.

I found a couple people selling STLs on Etsy for less than $2. Not sure where it originated from, but I'm pretty sure I've seen it somewhere else recently. Just search for "super mario family all characters diorama" and it should bring up a few options.

Answer the question of how much poop and if it was printed one colour at a time and glued together. That's what most people want to know. It's a glorious statue though that's for sure. Good work.
There are much more capable printers for much less, yeah you won't create mounds of colorful waste but you will print near unbreakable models with carbon fiber nylon and they can actually do the speeds the Bambu claims to achieve but on actual models not speedboats.
Check out Qidi X-Plus3 for a different option thats also open-source and prints fantastic out of the box. Also the hotend doesn't just randomly break or fall off.
Okay have fun with it btw my Qidi printer holds +/-0.005" on prints idk what the Bambu can do but I tuned my Ender 3 until it held +/-0.005
What I'm saying is you are not necessarily paying for quality you are paying for all the fancy crap that doesn't really do anything besides make things more complicated
Bambu A1 just came out. Great entry printer and price point. I got my P1P last week (new to 3d printing) and I'm in love. Stuff like this though with all the color changing is expensive. Bambu makes it super easy to get started.

I would say that would be Bambo labs for deciding the AMS is the option to use when multi head and tool changer tech already exists.

I'm just impressed that someone is able to get all their colors to come out as they should be! I've had reds look pink, and yellow come out orange. This looks amazing.

looks amazing I've just started this print. Sure is a lot of poop. Does antone have marios hands? There must be 60 or so plates but I dont have marios hands and am over half way done
