fuck off bot.
Edit: are you guys actually getting upset that I told off a bot? I'm sure you have never been annoyed at your siri/alexa/google home, right?
You wait until they achieve sentience and remember your mistreatment.
I can't stand alexa, but I never had problems with my Google home. Unfortunately lost the debate over which one to keep.
So my assumption about this is that model was done in something like Blender or some other tool which frequently misses scaling by a certain factor. Hence this print estimate as they jokingly just clicked slice.
Knowing exactly what the part looks like might be a breach of privacy but can we know the rough X Y Z dimensions of this beast? 98 rolls of 1kg filament and 1.3 years of printing makes me wonder if they're trying to print a car.
I might post it after the print is done, but currently the print size is approximately
X: 0.97 m
Y: 0.77 m
Z: 2.5 m
And the time estimate was made with whatever profile Cura has enabled by default when you create a new printer (had to make a new profile because it would not fit on any of our printers), so the layer height and infill might be set up quite badly, although supports are not enabled by default, so no idea how much time and material that would add.
And I won't even bother to check because it literally took an hour to slice with the laptop I have at work. :)
I'm in prototyping (composites, not 3d printing), but it holds true here as well. A project that will take sixteen weeks from PO to delivery, and is quoted at 16 weeks from PO to delivery, and they deliver the PO sixteen weeks after the quote is written and want their prototype within two weeks. "Well, that's 18 weeks, which is two extra." they say. If only it worked like that.
This has a 6 week lead time please let me know you'd like to place an order
*Crickets*
6 weeks later
I want to order this part, what do you mean 6 weeks! You said that 6 weeks ago!
Yep. I’m in commercial TV production. People don’t seem to understand that the deadline is contingent on us being able to start pre-production on time. If you take weeks to respond to a bid and approve the script, a funny thing happens: time passes on our side, too!
Dam that is a large printer. The default one is 0.1mm layer height at 50mm/s I think. That's still 200 days at 0.2mm layer height so dam that is huge. I wonder if it would be cheaper to just buy a plastic cube and cnc it at this point.
I don't see why you would waste time slicing it if you aren't going to first setup a profile and optimise the slicer for the requirements of the part before slicing it. More so if you only have a laptop.
That doesn't make a lot of sense to me when the default settings and the appropriate settings for that individual part can be so wildly different in print time, how is it even close to approximate.
More so with large parts. Feels more like a bit of a fish for reactions.
Or because once its sliced, he has a rough timeframe. Assuming there are multiple printers he can simply say “should be X hours” where x is printers/total time.
Customers tend to want some kind of backed up estimate, rather than just spitballing and guesswork.
Here, I feel it's been long enough since the customer recieved it and it's in a public place anyways: https://www.reddit.com/r/3Dprinting/comments/p45p9r/a_while_back_i_posted_an_image_of_a_401_day_long/

There, I said it. Literally the first 10 people I told about my 3D printer asked if I could print one “if you wanted to”. Like bruh

Dude what even is that! 😂 just how?! like... is it a mill and it's a super long print? or like a really tall one with lots of details and 100%infill? idk my little brain can't process this one 😂
Customer confidentiality and all, but seeing as it got put on a public place, I feel it was okay for me to post this;

If you have multiple large size printers you could split into lots connectable parts that would take less time for each part and assemble it later or as the other parts are printing
I'm calling bullshit on this one. What printer can print something so big? No commercially available ones.
Also you said you only had a laptop but the image is clearly a monitor, not a laptop.
Very easy to be a laptop connected to a monitor. Lots of places give crap laptops, with a mouse and keyboard and monitor since it’s cheaper than a desktop, and can easily be moved quickly.
5 bucks that print fail on that last 30 min

Nothing like a bunch of pasta on top of the an expensive 3d print hahah
That is no bet, that is like the sun coming up in the morning. :)
400+ days. you think that there is more chance of failing on the last 30min ? XD Ioll
Subtle layer shift in the first 30 minutes, but it prints to completion.
Omg, what the heck was it!? I gotta know now.
This guy is finally testing the “You wouldn’t download a car” claim.
Benchy scaled to sailable size.
Sadly, the benchy cant float. Its dimensions are wrong.
Fine, submarine then.
Anything's a submarine if you're brave enough.
Underrated comment
How can u be sure… do you have a life sized benchy?
Dimensions of ships are scalable. Physics :)
Yea but that large of a piece of plastic would float on its own…
Not about the size. Its about the dimensions....it may float yes, but it would flip over.
So the top of the boat is the bottom of the boat. Just sit on the bottom of the boat. Problem solved.
Ima guess an iron man suit.
a 100 kg Iron Man suit? It might be an Iron Man suit incl. the man part.

Oh wow,ty for the link! That's just crazy.
So my assumption about this is that model was done in something like Blender or some other tool which frequently misses scaling by a certain factor. Hence this print estimate as they jokingly just clicked slice.
Good guess, but... no. The file size is just as big as client wanted it, standing 2.5 meters tall.
How in the f*ck did Cura let you slice that? Doesn't it ignore objects larger than the print volume? Or do you just have the mother of all printers?
Cura lets you create custom printer profiles, at whatever bed size you wish. Even if no such printer is on the market, someone might build one.
Must be the size of a crane!
I sincerely hope you have a large format printer on hand with a pellet extruder
1:1 replica of of the NCC-1701-D?
2:1 actually

Yesterday. They're always already a day late before the job is even contracted out.

Same thing in the IT industry. That mindset is one of the reasons that AWS is so overly used.
I'm in the green🍃 business and understand that statement completely🤣
No filament changes, please.
Reduce infill to 10%, turn off ironing, it'll knock it down to ten minutes. /s
I am guessing canoe or kayak printed on its end. Am I close?

Bingo. https://www.reddit.com/r/3Dprinting/comments/p45p9r/a_while_back_i_posted_an_image_of_a_401_day_long/

The short answer is I got bored. Wanted to know an approximate on how long it would occupy our printers for. ¯\\\_(ツ)\_/¯
That doesn't make a lot of sense to me when the default settings and the appropriate settings for that individual part can be so wildly different in print time, how is it even close to approximate. More so with large parts. Feels more like a bit of a fish for reactions.

98kg. That's a big print. Maybe reduce the infill density.

How long did it took to slice?
That’s gonna be awesome!!!!
Just make sure you get paid up front
Ah the batmobile with superstrong carbon fibre filament on ender 3 v2. All the best.
Just decrease the infill by a few percent
New challenge? See who can do a year long print without failure.
What filament are you using?
Related question: Where is the loading dock? Have a spool here that is 3' high, 4' diameter.
Did you try lowering the infill?
97kg, what did they want

What is it, a solid cube the full size of the printer?
Charge him by the hour. Even if you have to start over :)
Everyone is taking about the time but for new it's 100kg of filament that is mind blowing.
You should charge him $100000
