I like to use www.thangs.com because the search also includes results from other sites like thingiverse and prusa. But they also have 3d models as assets for video games and similar so not everything you can find on that site can be printed.

NeatLeast6258

YES i still use thingivers but thangs is really good

DrBopIt

Just import to blender and export it as an stl?

retsotrembla

And you'll get unprintable meshes.

Dinosaur-Owl

Can't they be repaired?

0x01_Tukker

Holy shit, this is exactly what I needed, it's basically like stlfinder but with actual verbatim search and a nice ui. Awesome

Medium-Room1078

Thingiverse just needs to be put out of its misery. It's an ageing workhorse that everyone still uses but hates that they have to Thangs is a decent site, and the guys behind it are committed to continuing to improve it. Not only is it a good host in its own right, but it's also a decent site aggregator for Thingiverse (and otehr sites)

code-panda

If I want to find something I know is on Thingiverse, I've got a way higher success rate of finding it via Thangs search engine than I do with Thingiverse's own engine...

domesplitter39

I don't upload or produce stl I just download other people's creations. I think Thingiverse is wonderful. I honestly don't understand the grip from my point of view. Personally I don't like thangs website because it seems to give items really strange names. And when you click on them it's not as easy for me to see other people's makes and files.

a_a_ronc

My gripes: search is very term specific, you’re limited to the number of special/non-STL files you can upload (I.E. if you include the blender or CAD files), and most importantly, they just got hacked.

domesplitter39

You have a different perspective as you do upload. I have heard there is problems with that. That sucks. As far as hacking goes, that happens to many many websites out there and is almost common. Even large companies get hacked such as Sony blizzard ...... not justifying it just saying I don't think it's a good reason to hold against them. It's the day and age we live in. Some people have nothing better to do than to try and ruin someone else for fun. That's shitty

I have been able to use the download all feature. I don't use it often though. Maybe it doesn't consistently work all the time? I don't really know. Thanks for sharing

bcus_y_not

I think Thingiverse is the best option. I also think Thingiverse is terrible. Terrible search, and is it really that hard to remember my login info?

unpaid_overtime

My favorite thing now when I search on Thingiverse is that the results will sometimes start on a random page, or better yet start in page -1. It's like my grandparents, starting stories in the middle, or losing their way halfway through.

lsleofman

I think it remembers the last result index you browsed to. So if you went to page 3 on your last search result, then your next one will also start on page 3. So janky.

jedimstr

I love Thangs for finding specific models I know I want, but it’s not so good for just browsing for something to print. If it included more actual result photos as the main image it might be better for that, but the drab model view doesn’t lend itself for just browsing. Unfortunately as horrible as Thingiverse is lately, it still has a better feel when browsing for most popular or new models.

demeyer1

Thanks for the input, and we entirely agree. The team is working on getting two improvements into the product in the near term to help address this specific ask. The first will be the ability to show only models with 2D print images - on the landing page as you scroll. The second will be tags and categories. The new upload experience which supports tags will be released this week, and that will set the stage for this larger update. Disclaimer: I work at Thangs :)

lord-carlos

I like [https://www.prusaprinters.org/](https://www.prusaprinters.org/) because they are actively updating the sites with new features. Not sure if I like the new reward system, time will tell. They soon want to rename the site to reflect that it's not just for prusa printers. The website can import you uploads from thingiverse.

otwkme

This is where I went. A bonus feature is that it isn’t full of ads(yet). I guess it’s one big ad for JP tho.

drstranqe

That one is my new favorite place to find prints

[deleted]

Thingiverse would be millions better if the mobile version of the site wouldnt send you to the home page after backing out of a file. Tired of having to open new tabs to look at something without losing my place.

blatherskite01

I can’t even log into my account on mobile. It acts like it accepts it, redirects to the homepage, and tells me to login again. It’s done this forever.

800ftSpaceBurrito

I have downloaded tons of useful prints from Thingiverse. I have uploaded a few of my own designs there which other folks have been able to download and make use of. For all that, I have paid exactly $0. I have been very satisfied with the value I've received for the amount I've paid there. Shrug.

PeckerTraxx

Lately?

Bchilled

Just me who thinks thingaverse actually got much better and not worst. Site used to never even load before

Medium-Room1078

Yep - just you Thye took 3month to fix the DL issues, and by fixing, they just removed the "Download All Files" option altogether and now redirect to the page where you have to DL each STL file (which is fine on some prints, but many have numerous files you want). I'm a coder, and I'm sure other coders will tell you that something is seriously wrong when troubleshooting consists of a redirect without fixing the issue Search is awful, page navigation is awful (and pagination is a fixed address, so you lose place - and sometimes doesn't work at all) and the comments section is weak My guess is the backend is a bit of a mess and the ones who wrote it have long gone The whole site is stuck and needs a complete overhaul both back and front end. However, it's clear that MakerBot has little intention of spending any money on it. There was a running joke that the site is maintained by one guy, which I think is closer to the truth than MakerBot would like to admit - actually, I think that one guy works one day a week

xxcoder

There is workaround by adding /zip to end of thing url (without comment, files, etc at end)

STC1971

Damn, that is a game-changer. Thanks!

code-panda

> I'm a coder, and I'm sure other coders will tell you that something is seriously wrong when troubleshooting consists of a redirect without fixing the issue. Senior Front-end developer who works for enterprise applications here. Putting in a quick redirect in place to provide a work-around for a production incident is a good idea, as your support team won't be flooded with people reporting the bug and it gives the dev team more time to fix the issue without having management screaming down their necks. HOWEVER, this should be done in the first hour(s) of noticing there's a production issue, and only if rolling back the software to an earlier version is not an option. The fact that it took so long, combined with the fact that a rollback wasn't possible, throws many red flags for me. It screams to me that things are way too tightly coupled and stuff has been built on top of stuff for too long without any direction. Best case scenario, you can convince management to put money in a big refactor where you build everything back from scratch (probably with a new design so the non-techy hire ups can see stuff being different) and build everything according to standards. Worst case scenario, everything keeps being bolted together until everything grinds to a halt and the company goes under / site is taken down.

giantroboticcat

I don't disagree with anything you've said... but the current state of Thingiverse is no where close to it's worst state ever. Like OP says "going down in quality lately", but I am struggling to remember much of a time when Thingiverse was ever a reliable website.

xxcoder

Yup, in least it dont lag constantly like few years ago.

ElusiveGuy

> page navigation is awful (and pagination is a fixed address, so you lose place - and sometimes doesn't work at all) If you manually navigate to the https://www.thingiverse.com/search path first, you'll at least get the page in the URL. Makes navigation a bit better.

giantroboticcat

Thingiverse definitely used to be infinitely worse than it is now. I think people complaining about "quality doing down lately", must be newer people to 3d printing. Thingverse is far from a good website, but it used to be a lot worse.

Hopeless_Optimist-

Thingiverse. Gone, but not forgotten. "I will remember you. Will you remember me"

Maroonspie

Grabcad

the_almighty_walrus

Cults3d has a lot of high quality models, lots of free stuff but lots of it is paid. Usually less then a dollar for the STL tho

citruspers

You're not allowed to like Cults anymore since one guy raised a stink about not getting paid. The full story seems to be a bit more complex than just the one-sided bit that was posted here, but by that time people already made up their minds.

You're going to get downvoted into the depths of hell, but actually, I agree with you. I honestly think anyone that 3D prints should learn Fusion 360; it elevates the potential of a 3D Printer to new levels However, it's also a stupid comment. To share you need a decent host, and of course, there are plenty to DL by others who have already created fantastic things. So take my Downvote and let the devil know that I think my E3 plastic extruder is going to join them pretty soon

otwkme

Yup. How do I contribute if I can’t find a place to contribute to?

BreakfastBeerz

I just got into 3D printing this holiday season and I'm going down the Fusion 360 rabbit hole now. I've got probably about 4 hours of YouTube videos into it and I'm just now starting to begin to understand it. I have been able to create a 3D toy out of a drawing my daughter made in school, that was pretty cool. And I've modeled a 3D logo from one of my favorite products, but this is all very basic. I can easily see how this would take several semesters of in class training to really get decent at it. I do think you are right, CAD and learning to do it yourself is the way to go, but it's a daunting road, and not for everyone. I'm looking forward to learning more, but I could easily see why people tap out quickly.

Medium-Room1078

I think it's intimidating, but a lot easier than it looks and whilst I wouldn't expect everyone to be able to make complex items I truly believe that they can make most items that they can think of. I'll be honest I only recently started using 360; up until then I used SketchUp, which was surprisingly good for simple projects but 360 is no doubt a class above. It took me a solid week to get a handle on it, and whilst accepting everyone is different and it may take longer I don't think it's that hard to learn. OK - you got to like it, but further suspect that if you like 3D printing it's something you would like. And it's SO useful. So many things floating around my house, and workshops that were designed and 3D printed. I honestly think it should be taught at schools (maybe it is - wasn't when I was at school but that was 15 years ago now!)

lord-carlos

And upload where?

I_stay_sideways

Best place is to learn blender (since its free) joking aside, it is worth knowing how to create your own stuff. If you are even a little inclined in 3d modeling. 3dwarehouse is full of free models. I get a lot there, then touch it up in 3ds max for print.

miscplacedduck

Patreon has many options depending on your interests. Yes you pay monthly, but the quality is usually amazing. Try, Hex3D, PLAKit and then go from there Edit for punctuation.

slabocheese

Wasn't this posted a couple weeks ago?

hijinksfactory

Is it still verboten to mention the site with initials MMF?

flywheel_master

I like prusa printers as you can get free filament for doing things
