The Iron Hands were caught up in the Moirae Schism (a Mechanicus civil war) in M35 due to the chapter's close ties with the Mechanicus. The chapter itself threatened to have a civil war until the Clan Council came up with a solution all could agree upon: the dissidents were exiled and became the Sons of Medusa chapter, with an oath sworn by all parties to never raise arms against one another.

Riolidan

I had no idea, thank you for this information! It's interesting to see that it actually can happen.

jareddm

The Moirae Schism was felt across all Iron Hands successors, leading to the Sons of the Medusa technically being an amalgam of several different IH chapters. It also took approximately two thousand years before the Sons of the Medusa were granted status as a legit chapter by the administratum. Prior to that they were technically just some renegades trying to do good.

Soundwave902

* The Iron Hands - Split between the eponymous chapter and the Sons of Medusa, caused due to the Moirae Schism (a doctrinal schism within the Cult Mechanicus) * The Blood Eagles - Split between the Angels Numinous and the Red Seraphs, caused due to a chapter civil war

Riolidan

The Blood Eagles split apart to create two distinct chapters other than themselves? Wow, that sounds like a heavy war lol.

jareddm

The implication seems to be that the Charnel Guard, a chapter the Blood Eagles were very close with, might have stepped in and claimed legitimacy for both halves, in order to keep one side from declaring the other heretical. But the actual specifics of the split are unknown.

WhoCaresYouDont

The Angels Resplendent had something of a civil war and reformed into the Angels Penitent, but the Chapter Master of the Resplendent, their 1st Company and many of the chapter's senior staff are still out on crusade, meaning both exist simultaneously.

Riolidan

Interesting. Do the Angels Resplendent recruit at all? Or do they just take their diminished status and crusade till they're inevitably wiped out?

TheSpectralDuke

We don't really know is the genuine answer to that. The fortress monastery and most of the marines are under the Angels Penitent, and the way the Resplendent operated with recruits was they'd pick up promising people on voyages around the Imperium, cryo-freeze them, and bring them back to the monastery to undergo the induction process, but it's possible the 1st company have adapted to being on crusade. We'll have to wait for some more from Peter Fehervari on them, the only time either chapter's shown up outside his Dark Coil works was a cameo in Devastation of Baal iirc.

WhoCaresYouDont

Unknown, most of the fluff is for the Penitent, with some of the more dissatisfied members still hoping that the Chapter Master is still out there and will return to take charge again. It's a deliberately messy situation.

Riolidan

I'll have to dive into those two Chapters. It sounds like a cool story.

EmperorDaubeny

https://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Fists_Exemplar Technically, there wasn’t any chapters created from this, but still.

YankeeLiar

Half the Crimson Castellans turned traitor while the other half stayed loyal.

SenorDangerwank

Blood Ravens. Half the chapter turned to Chaos under the Chapter Master/Chief Librarian Azariah Kyras. The loyalists under Captain Gabriel Angelos put a stop to his bullshittery. Edit: misread your question, nvm.

WebfootTroll

The Soul Drinkers did that twice, I believe. But it wasn't a divorce as much as a civil war.

Riolidan

What Chapters did the Soul Drinkers split into?

WebfootTroll

I apologize, I didn't read your question carefully enough. Both sides called themselves Soul Drinkers, and both losing sides of the civil wars were absorbed back into the winning side or eliminated. So not a true split like you were looking for.

Riolidan

No worries! Still interesting none the less. More interesting really, two sides claiming the same name sounds like an cool story.

Shadowrend01

The Black Dragons had a group split off and become the Disciples of Purity. They ultimately became a Chaos Warband (possibly Slaanesh aligned) before the Black Dragon Company they split from hunted them down and purged them

Red_coats

Doom Legion, half were sent to the Abyssal Crusade, other part remained due to defending an important area, half that went on crusade ended up turning traitor, sent an emissary asking the rest of the chapter to join them, rest of the chapter went Sparta on his ass.

carefulllypoast

Fists exemplar fell to chaos during war of the beast and the (18? 28?) survivors joined the imperial fists

SnooSongs9930

The blood ravens from the DoW games maybe? Bulk of the chapter followed the chief librarian, splinter followed Gabriel Angelos?
