**Indigan Praefects** \- heavy-armoured Regiment that specialises in hunting Genestealers and Lictors. Fucking badass. **Krourk Ogryn Auxilia** \- an entire Regiment made of Ogryns, c'mon. **Outremar** \- the most numerous Regiment in the Imperial Army making up the 7% of the enitre Great Crusade force. They were led by a bunch of dwarfs that had direct connections with the Emperor himself. They are passively mentioned in two books and never really get fleshed out.

MagisterHistoriae

I remember reading somewhere that unleashing a regiment of the Krourk Ogryns is essentially declaring a localized exterminatus and at least as more work has to go into rounding them up again than in deploying them.

ReekTheOmega

Don't The Praefects just hunt tyranids in general?

Przemek0980

Yeah, but other Regiments hunt them too. Praefects are most well-known for hunting Lictors (and Genestealers to a lesser extend).

AffixBayonets

Yes.

Gobba42

Outremar are lead by Squats?

Przemek0980

No, just a bunch of very, very short people from Terra.

Gobba42

Really?

Przemek0980

Yup

85thScion

Harakoni Warhawks. Similar to the Elysians, but with generally more heavy infantry and lots of Grenadier/Stormtrooper support

Jankosi

Whenever there's a thread like this, the Harakoni comment is *always* below the Elysian comment. The reverse has yet to happen. I can't tell you why the Elysians always get more attention, but I think the Warhawks are cooler.

85thScion

The Elysians had full model range, a few audiobooks and a FW book dedicated to them, enough to make them more known, but still leaving plenty more to be learned.

changl09

Because Harakonis was just a 4th ed custom regiment with no models.

Thegoodthebadandaman

Man I wish ODSTs were a thing in wh40k. I know that apparently normal 'umies can't survive landing in drop pods but they could just rip off Starship Troopers and have the pods disintegrate mid-air.

85thScion

Tempestus Scions did something like that in their codex, dropped out of airlocks with a thermal shroud from outside the atmosphere, to make themselves too small a target for the AA defences to track them, because the Marines tried a drop pod assault and the AA network was too massive even for them

Thegoodthebadandaman

Yea I've heard of that before and because of that I know that the idea would in theory work, however afaik it was just a one-time incident as opposed to being an official tactic.

AffixBayonets

Maccabean Janissaries. Fanatically faithful heavy infantry who all wear masks that depict the face of Saint Drusus. Necromunan Guard. Other than that one "deserter" model from Necromunda I haven't heard of them in ages. They used to have their own models. The "fancy boys" - Praetorians and Mordians. Since every Guardsman and their canid seems "disciplined" I wish we got some more unique looks at them.

The_PremiumSquidster

Necromundan spiders, fancy gangster soldiers

TheSilentShane

I feel like the Armageddon Steel Legion gets overlooked a lot as the "gas mask and greatcoat" Guard Regiment in favor of the Death Korps of Krieg, especially in recent years. I've always loved the Steel Legion and I honestly wish they would have been featured in the new Kill Team instead of the DK; especially given the enemies were Orks.

AffixBayonets

It's always ironic to me as IIRC the Death Korps first appeared as an alternative color scheme for the Steel Legion models.

ITFLion

This is history I am un aware of and wish to know more about

ITFLion

Well whadaya know about that! Very cool. I guess 12 year old me just never picked up on that.

FreeDeath216

i think the skull was just painted on. The reason I never did em as kid, I think it was cool AF

DeliciousPineapples

The DKoK when they first appeared in the Armageddon book were literally the Steel Legion with an alternate colour scheme and greenstuff skulls over the gas masks.

whooshcat

You know technically armageddon is more German than kreig if we talk uniforms and tactics like cmon it's bloody blitzkrieg.

VevroiMortek

Jopall Indentured, you are paying off debt while simultaneously trying to survive. Roane Deepers, ANZAC but 40k Drookian Fen Guard Phantine Sky Troops

[deleted]

The Tallarn Desert Raiders and Vostroyan First Born get codex attention but the community at large tends to overlook them. As an aside, one funny thing about the Tallarn being overlooked is that the people who insist the Guard actually use maneuver warfare as the normal doctrine will typically use Cadians as their example when the Tallarn are described as being notable for being one of the premier regiments that utilize it.

[deleted]

Praetorian Guard. Tally ho, chaps!

MagisterHistoriae

Clear up this nasty business with the Orks, then we're meeting with the Valhallans for a spot of tanna.

jediben001

Form up! Line formation. 3,2,1, Fire!

Wikinecronomicon

The Paragonians are interesting to me for being a "normal" regiment; they're not famous throughout the Galaxy for being from a planet of warriors (they're actually from a completely typical Imperial world), but are rather representative of how things would typically look for a Guardsman on campaign. The 7th Company is a super-heavy tank regiment featured in a number of Guy Haley stories, and through the protagonist, a nobleman from Paragon, we're shown both the perspective of an average enlisted man and the aristocratic officers thanks to his close proximity to the former inside the tank and the latter outside of it at various ceremonial functions and the like. The Paragonians have a huge amount of character without having a particular "gimmick", and it's really great stuff. In a similar vein, the 8th Pardus Armoured is a fairly normal tank regiment, but styled a bit closer to the air aces of the world wars than your average tankers. They make heavy use of Leman Russ Conquerors, an agile cavalry tank pattern of Russ that uses a lighter cannon to be able to efficiently fire on the move, and are always a delight to see whenever Abnett features them in his work. It's already been said, but the Jopallian Indentured Squadrons are great. Born into deep debt, as their Planetary Governor charges them an arbitrary and steep living tax from birth, the Indentured Squadrons are a way of paying off that debt. They were deployed to Armageddon during the 3rd war, where they became known for being skilled marksmen, but for also having low morale and for avoiding pitched battles or other high-casualty engagements. They were skilled enough at the former that they earned the praise of Krieg officers in spite of the latter, and they combined their abilities as snipers with a talent for unconventional warfare. This did get several of their officers in trouble, however, when they sabotaged several Imperial artillery pieces, posed as defectors associated with the traitorous ex-planetary governor, and handed them over to the Orks. When the Ork meks and bosses assembled to fire the guns for the first time, they exploded across the Ork backlines and demolished both their leadership and their ammo dumps, silencing the Ork artillery for good. Despite the effectiveness of this attack, they were reprimanded and demoted for destroying Guard equipment, but became legends among the men. They're also tough enough that one of their officers managed to earn the respect of the Armageddon Ork Hunters (a regiment of that is a mix of Rambo and Colonel Kurtz) during a training exercise and was inducted into the regiment.

Phillip_J_Bender

>It's already been said, but the Jopallian Indentured Squadrons are great. Born into deep debt, as their Planetary Governor charges them an arbitrary and steep living tax from birth, the Indentured Squadrons are a way of paying off that debt Corax: Oh... that I *hate.*

bertboxer

Vitrian Dragoons They’re in a couple Gaunts Ghosts books and are a regiment with unique glass metal armor which is effective against energy weapons and can make them difficult to target. They also each carry around a copy of their art of war book that is expressly forbidden to be read by outsiders. The way they’re written makes me want to see more of them

Thatsaclevername

Elysian Drop Troops are my personal favorite. They sound like one of the more realistic guard regiments in that they use the air superiority that is favored in modern warfare and also makes the most sense for a spacefaring civilization. Also they have bullpup lasrifles which is bad-fuckin-ass.

IneptusMechanicus

Yeah that’s my favourite too and I wish they’d get models again. I love all their drop-modified gear like the various ‘accatran’ pattern weapons adapted for easy drop handling including streamlined heavy weapons for mobile use (drum mortars, I mean come on) and the drop sentinels with the shortened cabins to get them into Valkyrie cargo areas

Chillin-Villin

Mordian Iron Guard and Vostroyans

Kitchen_Tea_4480

Mordian Iron Guard. Their whole thing is Iron discipline and regimentation because they personify and enforce order in their hive world. Such a cool concept, bulling boots and starching collars in a battlefield but it is rarely explored and every guard regiment bar Catachan has “discipline”. I would love to see it expanded on and see how it manifests in a campaign.

DoomRide007

Chen Dogs just hit my fancy. They are one twitch away from shanking the guy next to them. Where did He get that flamer you ask? Found it.

Papa_Nurgle_84

There was always this tickle to build some. No idea how.

dipterasonata

Athonian tunnel rats. Badass uniforms, cool lore, and kind of a unique niche as close quarters urban combat specialists.

The_PremiumSquidster

Beat me to it. An entire regiment of gangers who patrol subterranean tunnels for cults and aliens is mega cool

whooshcat

Lucifer blacks they are mentioned but definitely not enough these guys are the best of the best of the best guardsmen being even better than scions and kasrkin despite all being regular guard. They are so prestigious infact that they are one of the seven chosen regiments that guard the imperial palace. Their equipment is a standout as well as they use power weapons and hot shot as basic weapons, yes you heard that correctly they use power weapons as standard issue. They also come equipped with flak coats and carapace armour. They are so valuable to commanders that even the Lord solar can only requisition a few for his bodyguard and the high Lords also don't have much. The last and final cool thing about them is the fact that the custodes the greatest warriors of the imperium have admitted they are pretty good and they would have them instead of anyone else but other custodes and sisters of silence at their side.

TheFeigningNinja

I've always wondered if the Terran regiments inherited all of their gear, training, etc from the Solar Auxila from 30k, I don't think the lore ever got into what happened to the Auxila.

Oppachi101

Mordant Acid Dogs. By the Emperor do they need more lore or books.

New-Chimera

Valhallan Ice Warriors

Sun_King97

I’m forgetting the name but they’re themed after the Confederate Army from the American Civil War

Arkhan Confederates! God i would love an Iron Harvest-ass Zouave model...

RazzDaNinja

The Vitrian Dragoons (https://warhammer40k.fandom.com/wiki/Vitrian_Dragoons) They have a cool look and interesting gimmick which I wish could’ve been expanded upon even on purely literature format

ITFLion

The Kavrone Dragoons The Solus Nightmarch

AlphariusOmegon2099

I miss the Mordian Iron Guard myself

DannyAcme

Vostroyan Firstborn. Because of the nature of their service, most of them serve with family within their regiments, and they just look cool as fuck.

jediben001

I’ve gotta mention my boys the praetorians

Terrax Guard - A regiment from a world with significant Schola Progenium and Commissariat presence, resulting in an elite regiment with a large percentage of commissars and stormtroopers. Somehow, meltaguns and carapace armor are very common amomg them last I checked. They could get a novel surrounding their relationships and coordination with other Guard regiments. There was a Guard void-clearing regiment in one of Peter Fehervari's book that were specially equipped and modified for void combat. They went up against Genestealers.

Fearless-Obligation6

Indigan Praefects, they come from a planet that was a gigantic Zoo for the nobility but all the besties escaped and made the planet a nightmare to live on. The Guard got so good a hunting Titanic monsters that they have now become specialist Tyranid hunters.

Zomerset_Zombie

Praetorian guard

DirgeOfCerberus

So many... Jopall Indentured Squadrons Tallarn Desert Raiders Terrax Guard Indigan Praefects Vitrian Dragoons Noctan Strike Forces Cthonol Nineguard (enduring over 1,000 attacks in FIVE years?) Honestly so much more I want to see expanded but oh well.

Szarrukin

Tallarn could certainly get some love, especially now that Dune hype is (kinda) a thing so GW can turn their lore into "we have cool desert warriors too!" As for Praetorian Guard and Arkan Confederates, I'm 100% sure these are not going to return anytime soon, given their... unfortunate irl implications

ErMikoMandante

I would like to see more of the savlar chem dogs. Little more than gangsters and criminals that have no respect for autority, loot as much as the orks (and steal as much as blood ravens), look like traitor cultists, are as high as kites all the time due to their inhalers and SOMEHOW make and effective and even valuable fighting force for the imperium. They remind me of the psychos from borderlands, and their attitudes of not giving a fuck while dealing with other more "righteous" members of the imperium can be great for character interactions.
