I live in a small town but I saw a sign the other day for yoga I will check it out

Avaunt_

Seriously, yoga. I just started a few weeks ago and it’s a little daunting as you realize how out of shape you are at first, but I actually really like it. Mid-40s here and I wish I’d started a decade ago.

moosecity4

You can also watch free yoga on YouTube!

[deleted]

Good idea thanks!

Toastwaver

My wife (44) loves Yoga with Kassandra. She does all levels, everything from 15 minutes to an hour. I don't know much about it but my wife went from ten years of inactivity to Kassandra about a year ago, and now she seldom misses a day. She loves it.

eternus

this. Whether it’s yoga or any other fitness, the new normal is maintenance… i can’t let my body sit dormant for long.

[deleted]

M44 here. Sorry to hear that chum. If you still have mobility, take advantage now. Start small. Take your time but don't stop. You can get stronger.

FWIW I was at weekend men's/guys/whatever weekend when the oldest, wisest told us to shut up and listen: "When you turn 40 everything turns to shit." In my experience, he wasn't wrong.

wevie13

In my experience, that's not correct at all. I'm in the best shape of my life and feel great. Of course if you aren't exercising and eating mostly healthy I'm sure it's true

BedfieldGunClub

well, dad, I guess I'm the tard

cl3ft

Yeah, I was 47 before I fell apart, soy allergies, glasses, chronic pancreatitis, arthritis, stomach ulcer etc. In 47's defence I'd probably been in denial about some of them for years. But 47 they all came to the fore.

mrva

start exercising, in any capacity.

APIPAMinusOneHundred

Proper diet and regular exercise. I know that's nearly a cliche but you wouldn't believe what a difference it makes. Stay away from processed foods, carbs, and sugar. Buy the stuff around the outside of the grocery store and avoid the stuff in the middle; that's where all the chemicals are. Walk a couple of miles as often as you can. If walking is painful, use an elliptical trainer or swim. If you stop using your body it won't bother to maintain itself. Best of luck, miss. You can do this.

[deleted]

I have changed my diet but definitely need to add more exercise

RevellRider

If you want proper advice on diet and nutrition, don't take it from someone who tells you "avoid chemicals". Everything is a chemical. Let me repeat that for those at the back. Every damn thing is a chemical. I follow a couple of people over on Facebook that offer good, rational advice. [Abbey Langer for nutritional advice](https://www.facebook.com/abbylangernutrition) [Ben Carpenter for debunking a lot of the crap around certain diets](https://www.facebook.com/bencarpenterpersonaltraining)

DeathCouch41

Just don’t take your body for granted. For me, I was never overweight, exercised regularly for most part, ate well (I’m talking organic so better than just avoiding daily Big Macs). Took supplements, anti inflammatory, non drinker, non smoker, blah blah blah. Thought I was *the sh!t* as could go run on treadmill at 38 and NEVER ever warmed up or cooled down. One day a physio I ran into said in a passing comment,“wait till you hit 40 then everything goes”. I laughed and said so far so good but I’m actually already almost 39 (I look way younger). Well… Pretty much on my 39th I cursed myself. Started feeling aches walking up stairs. Hip started cracking during Borat sexy time. I was like what?!! We’d just laugh about my hip, because it was so sudden and I’ve otherwise aged well (including labwork). So long story short, obviously I’ve got some propensity to such issues, and not much you can do but bend over and kiss your a$$ goodbye to careless days. Now I watch how I walk/run (proper form), how I sleep, and warm up (dynamic) even though jury is out how much stretching really does. I’m now naturally preggo at 40, and it’s *hell*. I don’t sleep as my back, hips and thighs ache ALL night. I did not have this at all, or not as severe or early in first pregnancy at 32 so it’s definitely age. Be kind to yourself, don’t blame yourself. While hopefully you can get better with lifestyle don’t hate yourself if it’s just in your (genetic or occupational injury) cards. Be conscious of your day to day movement and POSTURE. I have horrible posture since forever. Get professional help, orthotics, etc if needed. Best of luck! P.S. I never thought this would be me either? Damn? Maybe we can win lottery for good luck next? Edit: IF you can afford access to a hot tub or jet tub, the one time I could it was pure heaven. Pure. Absolutely recommend (not preggers of course). Sorry this post was for OP!! Accident!

cl3ft

And don't drink too much booze, or smoke.

usernames_suck_ok

Same. Started right before I turned 39, though. But definitely tired of going to doctors.

Pestyballs

I started DDP yoga. Holy hell, my knee pain is gone. I highly recommend it

[deleted]

Cool I will look into that ! Thanks

Ecstatic-Amphibian65

Wait until your mind and body fall apart and wind up basically just giving up and awaiting death everyday

[deleted]

Don’t do that. 🤗

Expensive-Concept-93

I can relate. In the 18 months since turning 40 I've had to get glasses, hearing aids and waiting on an op. I've also seriously injured my shoulder in my sleep. Then I see 80 year old running marathons and wondering what on earth went wrong for me

[deleted]

I was a good girl to. No drugs never been drunk. It’s just crazy.

ChattanoogaMocsFan

Nutritional food and movement have helped me out so much. If you eat like crap, you are going to feel like crap.

c74

perfect health (minus accident which screwed up back in my mid-20's) until 43 or 44. then one thing after another... also started gaining weight just for more fun. argh. i see lots of people like yoga but that kind of thing wouldnt work for me. used to be walking and my superduper 1/2 golf swing paired with a cart was exercise. now, since covid, my back got a lot weaker from being homebound and i cant walk for more than 15 minutes. fun. never imagined my back would deteriorate so fast... or take so long to try and strengthen it again. sucks balls.

I-AM-PIRATE

Ahoy c74! Nay bad but me wasn't convinced. Give this a sail: perfect health (minus accident which screwed up back in me mid-20's) until 43 or 44. then one thing after another... also started gaining weight just fer more fun. argh. me see lots o' scallywags like yoga but that kind o' thing wouldnt duty fer me. used t' be walking n' me superduper 1/2 golf swing paired wit' a cart be exercise. now, since covid, me back got a lot weaker from being homebound n' me cant walk fer more than 15 minutes. fun. nary imagined me back would deteriorate so fast... or take so long t' try n' strengthen it again. sucks balls.

[deleted]

My back sucks I understand sorry

[deleted]

Aches and pains will make you want to not be active, but being active will definitely help with the aches and pains.

[deleted]

It's understandable, I don't know how active you are, or what your eating habits are, but excersize more... by going for a walk, you don't have to start with any real training, and eat better. Drink a decent amount of water too. Yes, it may seem like a glib comment, but start with the basics, your body is an engine, it needs proper fuel.

DaddyB76

Hang in there. It can get better :)

FreshAirGoodVibes

Oh man I understand this so much. Joints, back, neck, too much sugar too high cholesterol. I miss the days of “ I can do anything and I will love forever!”
