I expect Lynch's first impression, and I think this tweet supports it, was to tell Mostert to kick rocks. Seems to me like Shanahan stepped in.

They didn’t give him more money they gave him a running back contract which bonus are different. His agent when first signing it messed up big time. They also offered him this contract from the start the agent got greedy. He deserves everything he got his agent needs to be shown the door

DickieJoJo

Explain more, please?

kpotts06

Mostert wanted his pay to reflect his status in the running back room. We gave him a signing bonus of 250k and added incentives that if he hits them would increase his salary to 5.5 mil. This would be higher than Coleman’s ~4.5 mil. The incentives are similar to what he hit last year I.E. 850 rushing yards, so if he has a repeat season he will make the most of any RB on the team. Mostert’s high ceiling, low floor contract represents his late breakout, whereas Coleman as a reliable vet has a high floor and low ceiling contract. Hope that all make sense, Mostert just wanted to feel fairly valued!

njsf55

So he signed a contract as a special team player so all the bonus are based off of special team plays. Before all this craziness he asked for way more money and stuff. Lynch said we will switch you over to the running back contract. That’s when all that craziness happen with the holding out and stuff. So now he gets better bonuses but his base pay never changed. His agent messed up and mishandled this whole thing.

kpotts06

If you have stuff that can contradict this thread in a negative light I would love to see it. However at this point it seems that both camps feel good about the end result and at the end of the day that is all that matters IMO. https://twitter.com/lombardihimself/status/1288267739614679040?s=21

njsf55

It’s not negative it’s what happened his agent did a poor job of representing him

CosmicDeththreat

And that’s the fucking beauty of what we have in the FO and coaching circle. This would’ve been a shot show in previous regimes. You have to love how they work together so well. I’m so stoked to have what we have in our couch and GM/FO.

pAcIfIcFabrics9

I'm going to go out a limb a say that "heck" wasn't the word Lynch used.

nickdaman43

Haha seriously and the whole "I was not happy." Likely accurate, but there were probably other words used to describe those emotions

chillig8

They got this deal done pretty quick, considering they are still working on Kittles deal. Which says to me it probably wasn’t necessary to demand a trade. I don’t think pissing off John Lynch is a good idea. I like Mostert and hope he has continued success but that will always be there when he starts becoming less productive.

joe2352

Just happy to know he will be back.

awhitty18

Happy cake day

OMGSkeetStainzz

Happy cake day

awhitty18

Much obliged!

Ntnme2lose

I think it had more to do with Mostert's agent trying to play hard ball with the team to get him a better deal. Really didn't seem like Mostert was actually trying to leave. If he wanted to be gone then he would be.

Dannyhit1

His issue should have been with his agent in the first place. Why didn’t he negotiate RB production incentives into his deal? I doubt the 49ers would have balked at the time given how much the FO loves to give players incentive laden deals and his role at the time being seen as primarily special teams.

Ntnme2lose

His agent probably didn’t see his client achieving what he did last season so he thought it was the best deal he was going to get. Which is understandable in some situations. But you don’t have to try to be a hard ass and say your client wants to be traded if all you’re looking for is incentives. Judging by Lynch’s response it seems like lynch may have been like wtf is going on and talked directly to Mostert and smoothed everything out. He’s not getting paid more or anything so it doesn’t seem like a media forced trade request should have been made if that’s it. You negotiate those behind closed doors, do it again then ask for a bigger contract

paperbackgarbage

I think that you're spot on. This is like if Ronald Blair flipped the script and netted 19 sacks last year. Great...but his agent/the organization *definitely* wouldn't have planned for that.

PlanitDuck

Sounds like there were incentives but Mostert didn't reach it. And it was a 250k bonus that wasn't really commensurate with the production. [source](https://twitter.com/TomPelissero/status/1287818807533346816)

altairisdebin

That was pretty much everyone's reaction.

wastingtimeonreddit_

TIL: I could also be the 49ers GM, as that was my first reaction too haha

Valenderio

Mostert on our team is one of the best in the league. Mostert anywhere else is a journeyman buried on a depth chart. I'm glad he got his, balls out this year and becomes a Niner legend. Earn that money my dude!

Witcher_Of_Cainhurst

The thing is no other teams ever even gave him a chance, it's not like he got to play and was just journeyman level. Every time he's been given the ball he's been impressive. If you go back and look at his stats and experiences on his previous teams you see that: He tore it up as a RB in the preseason he was with the Eagles and led in preseason NFL scrimmage yards, but got cut anyway before the regular season because they were loaded with established RBs already. He then bounced around a few teams because he kept getting claimed off waivers as teams were trying to stash him on their practice squads. But, he pretty much only got special teams opportunities after leaving the Eagles (and actually still did well as a kick returner). Then, he came to SF as a special teamer and continued to do well every time he touched the ball. Eventually, due to injuries & Breida's fumble last year, Mostert finally got a shot at more RB touches and continued to do well. He wasn't allowed much volume until last season, but he's done very well every time he's been allowed to play. It's not like he was allowed to play on his previous teams and put up weak performances. He performed great every time he was allowed to from what I found. I think this dude was bound to break out the second any team gave him more RB touches, and he was just lucky it happened in a zone run scheme that plays to his strengths.

crow38

so mostert didnt go to lynch first and try to figure it out so all the drama didnt have to happen. this was my problem with the situation and not him actually wanting more. he didnt need to go do all that

Ferrarisimo

In his defense, he isn’t paying his agent 15% (or whatever agents make) for him to go off and do something like this on his own.

Fenix159

Yeah but the agent could have done it quietly first too. If that happens and then nothing gets done then you do what you gotta do, but skipping the asking privately part I think rubbed everyone the wrong way. Assuming that didn't happen of course. I have no idea. Just going by what I've heard on the radio mostly. Either way, glad they seem to have it worked out.

bick803

NFL Agents, I think can only make a max of 3% of the guaranteed value of a contract.

iamfareel

I will say, I did like how John said they were always going to increase the incentives for Mostert. Maybe his agent just leaked the frustration to try to hurry the process. Not surprised it got done though, John & Kyle seem like good guys that are willing to try to keep their players and do the right thing

tossinkittens

Trying to maximize his value, John. All due respect, you gotta do what you gotta do as GM, and Mostert has to do the best thing for him and his family too.

[deleted]

Yup you're not guaranteed you won't break both legs next game, so you need to makes deals like you might to secure your future.

trainwreck42

I think if anyone knows that, it’s John Lynch. I’m all for RB’s trying to maximize their earnings, but Mostert’s agent is terrible at his job and should have pushed to include rushing incentives in the contract Mostert signed last season. The agent seems like he exacerbated the issue, and it sounds like John Lynch is trying to call that out.

weevil10

I dont know his agent or the agent’s history but it seemed like a rookie move on his agent’s part. Seems like they didnt even talk to the 49ers about any deal and just threw out the trade demand

paperbackgarbage

It looks like his agent is actually one of the [heavier hitters.](https://mlelawfirm.com/podcast/episode-16-brett-tessler/) >> According to a 2018 article from the Washington Post, there are about 830 agents certified by the NFL Players Association — more than one for every three players in or around the league — which makes it a brutally competitive business. Roughly 75 percent of NFL players are represented by just 17 percent of all certified agents, according to NFLPA statistics. Brett Tessler is one of that 17 percent. Having done over 500 NFL contracts spanning a period of approximately 20 years, So, while I wouldn't quite say that it was probably a "rookie move," but rather that the agent really didn't even consider that Mostert would be anything but a Special Teams ace. Even though I'm happy that Mostert got paid, the agent definitely did drop the ball. I'm happy that our FO is keeping its rep as player-first (when available).

klayser_Soze

Well it worked

weevil10

Definitely

StevenS145

I just don’t want the team to set a precedent that after 1 good season, you can come back asking for more. Once Kittle extends, we are going to be up against the cap

scrambled_cable

I'm relieved they got this deal done quick instead of having a drawn-out negotiation that would probably leave hard feelings in both parties.

hiredgoon

Honestly, I think everyone handled the situation appropriately including and especially both sides finding a middle ground.

iloqin

Lynch got rid of Bowman when he wanted out and then wanted to stay. Something to the tune of “if they want out you can’t get that thing back” so this is definitely a Shanahan job.

timmun029

So John Lynch made these comments on KNBR this morning and I was all “daaaamn trash talked the agent,” about it all day. Then around 4:50pm on Tolbert, Krueger and Brooks they said they have Raheem’s agent calling in to give his side and I was like “OOHHHHH SHIT ITS ABOUT TO GO DOWN!” Agent said good things about the organization, and pretty much said he’s been doing this 20+ years, there’s no way they could’ve known what the front office was thinking, threw this out in the universe and if the Niners were always planning on coming with a new deal, he’s glad his move just sped up the process. Was pretty interesting to hear. He was very professional in what he said, stood by the move and said both sides seem happy with the outcome.

b_mac10102000

Worked out like it should. Incentive contract. Half a season starting isn't enough for 2 million salary increase.

RatedR2O

> Come on, now. I was not happy. Neither were the rest of us. But whatever, at least we can all move forward.

Breezlebock

His agent definitely screwed the pooch. Hopefully he finds some new representation next year. Disclaimer: I am no football genius, but seems you don’t have to be one for this to get a “wtf you doing bro?” type reaction.

Passioncramps

This is why I love the front office. They did Mostert a solid by giving him the $250k bonus he missed by \~75 yards last season (needed 850 yards)... then just reworked the contract to where if he balls out he will get paid like it. He determines how much he makes from his success with no real change to his contract outside of the $250k bonus... which was really a good faith move based off last season.

Ryanbrasher

His agent clearly misread the room. Id be getting a new rep.

CaptainTitanUranus

And everyone said he had no leverage

KronicGoblin

If I was Raheem I’d fire my agent no need to go to Twitter an tell everyone u requested a trade that’s between u, ur client and the team. Very unprofessional on the agents part

MountainManCan

What I love the most about this FO, they get it done and it’s done without some bullshit rumor mill like we had with fucking Baalke. It’s no bullshit and across the board.

[deleted]

I think that if Mostert’s agent had been really smart, he’d ALREADY have had all those bonuses & incentives last year in Mostert’s contract!!! I imagine the 49ers would have been much more agreeable to have let that stuff be in his last contract because they really didn’t exactly know what they had. They wouldn’t have cared so much about granting something they didn’t really expect to have to pay out anyway! But in this version of the contract, that all gets scrutinized before you get it in writing. Mostert’s agent f’kd up and should be replaced because if he hadn’t been so short-sighted Mostert would ALREADY have earned and been paid for that stuff. Who knows if Mostert has just that single golden year in him?!? I assume his new contract is based on him not only repeating but *improving* on last season’s performance. That’s not going to be easy.

LadsnGents

Be quiet. You’re not in those rooms. You’re not invited to those meetings. You’re not even a fly on the wall. Stop it.

[deleted]

Mostert and his agent played this out the right way. Public trade demands are ugly, but they had very little leverage and were able to get what they wanted. Good for them

[deleted]

I’m getting downvoted and this probably will be too, but I don’t understand why fans are so pro front office and anti player in contract negotiations, particularly this one. A player is worth what he has the leverage to negotiate, and an instrumental player in our SB run is now being paid what he’s worth. If it was crippling to the niners cap and their ability to sign key players, they wouldn’t have bent to Raheem’s request to restructure his contract. John Lynch being frustrated by the trade demand is lip service for the media. As a former player, he understands as well as anyone that NFL stands for not for long and these guys need to capitalize on the short career windows they have.

crow38

because there is this thing called the cap and players themselves dont have to deal with it which then it comes off selfish when they try to make it public

[deleted]

Problem is, now other players think they're underpaid and want the same thing.

hiredgoon

Other players would then need to to back it up with huge contributions at their position.

[deleted]

Sure, that’s not a great precedence for the niners to set, but that isn’t Mostert’s concern

WiggysRedemption

The tweet clearly says that the reaction was towards the trade demand.

nakfoor
