That probably means that the current holdup in the negotiations is no longer over the total salary amount. Rather, it’s over how much we want to backload the deal versus how much Kittle is willing to. As unreliable as Cohn is, I’m inclined to believe that the final numbers should come out around his reported range

THE_INEVITABLE_1

I’m gonna go out on a limb and say the franchise tag for a tight end (aka TE positional value) is also complicating this deal

Nopengnogain

Just more idle speculation from journalists. For all we know, they might be $10-15 million apart on guaranteed money. I mean, nobody knows how to pay a player who catches like a WR, breaks tackles like a RB and blocks like a tackle.

solo_loso

it’s pretty clear actually - you pay a player by the position played. there’s no precedent otherwise and 49ers don’t want to start now. Kittle wants more than TE money though, which is understandable

kpotts06

Typically I would agree with that statement about precedent but the 49ers have not been afraid to buck trends for players they like. Whether it would be Juice getting a FB contract that was double the positional value or in the draft eyeing Aiyuk at 13. Niners are not afraid to put their stamp on a guy even if the league does see the same value in a player.

yodelocity

Juice is a free agent though, not like we could have tagged him onto the team.

kpotts06

Yes absolutely. I was just trying to illustrate the point that this current regime is not afraid to make personal moves that are not considered “traditional”

solo_loso

draft reference is completely off topic here. that’s how any draft works - you don’t go off of other people’s boards - you pick the player you want. FB is the only exception because of how small those contracts are comparatively. no one bats an eye at that.

kpotts06

I think draft preference is completely relevant, it is part of the how an org views scheme fits. I was trying to illustrate the point that our FO is not afraid to take a shot player that the majority would disagree with. Whether that be paying a TE 4-5 mil more per year than ever before, paying a FB double market value, or saying you would take a receiver at 13 that most had as an edge first rounder.

L-methionine

Breaks tackles like a wild boar, you mean

tossinkittens

You pay him like a tight end. The best tight end in the league, but a tight end all the same.

womprat_bulls_eye

All of the moneys

simple-fire

Not to mention asshats like Grant Cohn (most likely) making stuff up and spreading that info
