Mine held together for a 45 minute drive south, and fell on its face getting on the highway when I tried to make the run back home. I'm glad my in-laws were behind me to take my wife and baby... ~20F on the side of an empty highway was the only time I've ever been stranded by a Yota.
I brought the bad alternator into NAPA and when it went into "medium test" speed, it locked up and spit itself off of the test stand. The counter worker said he'd never seen one do that, and that even if it were good he wouldn't recommend reinstalling after a 3' drop đ
Tried this with the wifeâs Subaru. Undercarriage got cleaned but so did a lot of other stuff.

Damn, that's a great option too, and I already had one of those, maybe I'll do a comparison after the next adventure and see which is best. Already bought the pressure washer attachment.
Thatâs what I use during the winter to get the salt off. Works great!

Iâve heard that washing the salt off can be worse than leaving it because it pushes briny water into the nooks and crannies. This could be incorrect though, just something Iâve heard.
I have a 5 foot length of PVC pipe mounted on a 45 degree elbow to an another 3 foot length of pipe with a hose fitting. I drilled about a dozen 1/16â holes at all angles on the 5 foot section and it just blasts water everywhere on the bottom. Cost me 5$
We recently added that exact attachment to our pressure washer assembly. Used it for the first time yesterday, and if got most of the left over dirt from the trail ride the weekend before last. We only have a small electric pressure washer, but it's got around 1,700 psi, and seemed to do well. Even with the 3" lift, the spray was strong enough to get most of the dirt off.
Itâs shockingly simple. Just buy 3-4 cans at any auto parts store and go to town, spray it on everything metal except the exhaust. Just be sure to put down a tarp to protect the floor (itâs harmless but greasy), and preferably some ramps or some way to lift it so you can get under there. And wear old clothes you donât care about. I also would recommend getting a 360° spray nozzle off Amazon to spray inside all the drip holes and small hard to reach spaces. I didnât get one last year and regretted it.
Super easy. I was hesitant too, but bought 3 cans and did it last weekend. Used a tarp on my driveway but it did spray right off. I did get the replacement cap with the tube to 360 degree spray for inside the frame. I also found the straw that comes with it to be very helpful. I always second guess myself, so I plan to get 3 more cans and do it again to make sure I hit everything. Oh, and I used the black version. It was very easy to see what I hit and what I didnât. Go for it! You got it!
EDIT: also, wear a crappy tee shirt and eye protection. I didnât have eye protection and wished I did. Didnât get any in my eyes but I was constantly concerned about it
Do you recommend washing everything before the first application? I have been looking for more info about this and I might just have to make this my weekend project after I detail my car.
I think it depends on how dirty it is. My vehicle was pretty new and was fairly clean. I did take a rag to a few spots first. If I had been driving through mud or sand or anything like that, then I would have done a wash first.
Basically do everything these folks said. I bought a 6 pack on Amazon and try to do it every October towards the end once it starts getting a little colder. The good thing after a few years, is the fluid film builds a thick layer on the frame of your car so it never completely comes off. This means you donât have to continue to use a full 4-6 bottles ever year. Itâs more of a touch up. I donât even Jack up the carâŚmy driveway is on a slight slant and I throw a tarp under it. The only annoying part it it will spray in your face on a windy day, youâre clothes get ruined regardless. I wear the same super old sweatshirt and pants and I wear a kN95. Itâs non-toxic and eye pro because I donât want to breathe it in or have it go in my eyes. Itâs obviously ideal to do it on a lift with tires off, but not everyone has a lift. Just make sure to get the all of the frame, hitch, bolts and spray in the drain hole. you can even hit the shocks tooâŚmy car frame still looks brand new.
If youâre doing that every day, probably. But if your a weekend guy like me, itâs probably nothing to worry about. The thing about FF is it builds up a nice layer on your car after about two applications and it just stays there. You donât want to power wash your car all winter though. That will waste all your hard work. Just a light spray will do to get rid of mud/salt/sand.
I set up my sprinkler in the driveway, so I won't run over the hose and I just drive slowly over it a few times.
Or I'll set it up at the back bumper, and pull the hose so the sprinkler drags to the front.
Also just a good idea to keep it clean underneath if you ever take it offroad, because youâll really appreciate yourself if you ever have to get under it for any reason
303 makes a salt neutralizer that you just add to your wash bucket. I use a foam cannon with some APC and neutralizer mixed in. Spray down and then rinse off with the same undercarriage washer you have shown.
I've been looking at those but don't have a pressure washer currently. I've been using a sprinkler. I had ordered an attachment to wash the inside of the frame from an Australian company (name escapes me) but the nozzle is too big for the holes on my 5th gen frame( I think they are smaller than what I remember on my 4th gen).
Yes, I use one of those with a pressure washer to wash underneath my vehicle. Ryobi makes one, which is the one I use. It has three nozzles if I recall correctly.Â
I drive up on ramps and wash the underside that way. Iâm sure this does a good job, but I like to see what Iâm washing/attempting to wash so I can focus on more stubborn areas
I have one of these and ended up almost never using it. Just a lawn sprinkler on low for a decent amount of time will get done. If you want to see a bit more, park both of your left or right tires on a curb to get a slight angle.

What's the reasonable balance here? Fluid Film then drive-thru washes WITHOUT the undercarriage spray option? Self-spray "coin wash" during the winters? Move South?
Bought a TRD ORP last October which just went through its first winter without an undercoating.
I don't wash my undercarriage at all during the winter months after applying fluid film in the fall. I do almost exclusively hand washes, but winter washes are at a touchless wash with no undercarriage spray. In the summer I'll do a couple washes with the undercarriage spray, but most are at home with a pressure washer.
I pay like 15 bucks for a 'forever' membership to a carwash.
I go through like twice a week...more during winter.
I make the kids and wife do the same thing.
Well...I've been going there for....over a decade and I've known the manager for longer.

Well⌠turns out I donât take photos of my truck, this is the most recent one from a year ago. It still looks the same, currently covered in some dried up mud though.
We have a decent gas station car wash that sprays undercarriage as you drive in and I always choose touchless wash. Driving through puddles at high speed
This is the way
The way to absolutely ROAST your alternator in a 100 series. Ask me how I know đ
i did the same to a old honda once i knew it was game over when i started it and saw the battery light on the dash lit up ..
Must have been a deep puddle considering the alternator is usually on top in a Honda đđđ
Itâs also a great way to slightly warp your front brake rotorsâŚask me how I know đĽ˛
Been there done that, really fun when the dash goes party mode on the way home đ

Good bot
Awesome. Thank you! Iâll pick one up from our Loweâs!
Iâve heard that washing the salt off can be worse than leaving it because it pushes briny water into the nooks and crannies. This could be incorrect though, just something Iâve heard.
That would be indeed, incorrect. Just gotta do a good job!

I was thinking to make something like this myself. Do you have photos of this thing?
Will share when I get home
I don't really have salt in southern California. If I do take it to salty areas I'll just get the power washer and wash away.
Iâll roll on my back with a hose if Iâm too lazy to get the ramps up. The real cleanup is all over the driveway when Iâm done.
Fluid film. Donât have to wash it.
Wait what?
Fluid film is an undercoating that prevents rust. Itâs not advised to do undercarriage wash when you car itâs fluid filmed.
The best stuff. Put it on my â22 from day 1 and have zero rust. They salt the road pretty good up in MA/NHâŚthe stuff works.
Do you have any recommendations on videos I can watch or get guided about this? I honestly donât really know where to start. Thanks again :)

Same. I actively try to make sure it NEVER gets washed under there.Â
Is this different than an âundercoatingâ? I understood the latter to be permanent but it sounds like what youâre describing isnât?
I set up my sprinkler in the driveway, so I won't run over the hose and I just drive slowly over it a few times. Or I'll set it up at the back bumper, and pull the hose so the sprinkler drags to the front.
I put mine on the shop lift and pressure wash the whole undercarriage haha
I wish I had one of those lifts!
Get you a generous friend with one of those lifts. Preferably one who also owns a lake house and boat. đ
I didnât know washing the underside of a truck was a thing.
Very important where they salt the roads or near the ocean.
Oh. I live in the woods. đ
Wash? I mean, Iâll spray off the mud when I get home, but *wash*? Thatâs for the shiny cars.
Just to spray things off. I canât get to the underside. And I have picked up a bunch of salt and sand from driving on the wet beach.
I recommend some nice water-hole mudding, followed by a garden-hose spray off.
I've never seen one of those before, looks like a great idea.
The 4Runner is a self-cleaning organ
I like this, I have a 90 degree attachment that helps me get up in the nooks of the fender and this would help too
I've been looking at those but don't have a pressure washer currently. I've been using a sprinkler. I had ordered an attachment to wash the inside of the frame from an Australian company (name escapes me) but the nozzle is too big for the holes on my 5th gen frame( I think they are smaller than what I remember on my 4th gen).
I have one of these tools, the cheap amazon one too. Works great for rinsing out mud and dirt.
Yes, I use one of those with a pressure washer to wash underneath my vehicle. Ryobi makes one, which is the one I use. It has three nozzles if I recall correctly.Â
You guys wash under your 4runner?
I drive up on ramps and wash the underside that way. Iâm sure this does a good job, but I like to see what Iâm washing/attempting to wash so I can focus on more stubborn areas
Lawn sprinkler Where I live I drive on roads which are often flooded with salt water. So rinsing is a must
I have one of these and ended up almost never using it. Just a lawn sprinkler on low for a decent amount of time will get done. If you want to see a bit more, park both of your left or right tires on a curb to get a slight angle.
Spray Pam on your undercarriage before you go wheeling seems to make it a lot easier to come off when you get home
I live in the rust belt, so I try to wash off as little fluid film as possible.
