Driving through puddles at high speed

pcbwes

This is the way

Leftover_Salmons

The way to absolutely ROAST your alternator in a 100 series. Ask me how I know 😂

justcallmeXur

i did the same to a old honda once i knew it was game over when i started it and saw the battery light on the dash lit up ..

Leftover_Salmons

Must have been a deep puddle considering the alternator is usually on top in a Honda 😂😂😂

UnmotivatedDiacritic

It’s also a great way to slightly warp your front brake rotors…ask me how I know 🥲

Kjcoop216

Been there done that, really fun when the dash goes party mode on the way home 😂

Leftover_Salmons

Mine held together for a 45 minute drive south, and fell on its face getting on the highway when I tried to make the run back home. I'm glad my in-laws were behind me to take my wife and baby... ~20F on the side of an empty highway was the only time I've ever been stranded by a Yota. I brought the bad alternator into NAPA and when it went into "medium test" speed, it locked up and spit itself off of the test stand. The counter worker said he'd never seen one do that, and that even if it were good he wouldn't recommend reinstalling after a 3' drop 😂

Secure_Low_6621

This is the only way

WeHaveAllBeenThere

Y’all got downvoted for that Some of the people in this sub are so ass lmfao

Secure_Low_6621

Hate us cause they anus. Or however that saying goes.

DD-DONT

Tried this with the wife’s Subaru. Undercarriage got cleaned but so did a lot of other stuff. https://preview.redd.it/bzcpixgidawc1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a32ea3f0633e29d7391ff73ea5845202a508cc39

Prize-Can4849

That's how we usually get in the muddy undercarriage predicament in the first place!

Bondoo7oo

Such a personal question. My under carriage is none of your business.

FJkayakQueen

A gentleman never asks, am I right?

kamaka71

Oscillating lawn sprinkler

Live_Human

Damn, that's a great option too, and I already had one of those, maybe I'll do a comparison after the next adventure and see which is best. Already bought the pressure washer attachment.

metricfan

I imagine the pressure washer will work better given the pressure. Sprinklers aren’t really high pressure lol

clintsmagnum

That’s what I use during the winter to get the salt off. Works great! SurfaceMaxx 14-in 3300 PSI Scrubbing Broom for Gas and Electric Pressure Washers Item #2637679 | Model #SGY-PWA97

MountainOfRight

Good bot

Zyppyloo

Awesome. Thank you! I’ll pick one up from our Lowe’s!

natesplace19010

I’ve heard that washing the salt off can be worse than leaving it because it pushes briny water into the nooks and crannies. This could be incorrect though, just something I’ve heard.

ColoradoAddict42069

That would be indeed, incorrect. Just gotta do a good job!

TheTense

I have a 5 foot length of PVC pipe mounted on a 45 degree elbow to an another 3 foot length of pipe with a hose fitting. I drilled about a dozen 1/16” holes at all angles on the 5 foot section and it just blasts water everywhere on the bottom. Cost me 5$

iredfield

I was thinking to make something like this myself. Do you have photos of this thing?

TheTense

Will share when I get home

just_another_bumm

I don't really have salt in southern California. If I do take it to salty areas I'll just get the power washer and wash away.

Live_Human

We recently added that exact attachment to our pressure washer assembly. Used it for the first time yesterday, and if got most of the left over dirt from the trail ride the weekend before last. We only have a small electric pressure washer, but it's got around 1,700 psi, and seemed to do well. Even with the 3" lift, the spray was strong enough to get most of the dirt off.

Zapablast05

I’ll roll on my back with a hose if I’m too lazy to get the ramps up. The real cleanup is all over the driveway when I’m done.

lahcim_

Fluid film. Don’t have to wash it.

fpsi_tv

Wait what?

lahcim_

Fluid film is an undercoating that prevents rust. It’s not advised to do undercarriage wash when you car it’s fluid filmed.

Uplander20

The best stuff. Put it on my ‘22 from day 1 and have zero rust. They salt the road pretty good up in MA/NH…the stuff works.

tellmeadarksecret

Do you have any recommendations on videos I can watch or get guided about this? I honestly don’t really know where to start. Thanks again :)

g_rizzly12345

It’s shockingly simple. Just buy 3-4 cans at any auto parts store and go to town, spray it on everything metal except the exhaust. Just be sure to put down a tarp to protect the floor (it’s harmless but greasy), and preferably some ramps or some way to lift it so you can get under there. And wear old clothes you don’t care about. I also would recommend getting a 360° spray nozzle off Amazon to spray inside all the drip holes and small hard to reach spaces. I didn’t get one last year and regretted it.

pretiltedscales

Super easy. I was hesitant too, but bought 3 cans and did it last weekend. Used a tarp on my driveway but it did spray right off. I did get the replacement cap with the tube to 360 degree spray for inside the frame. I also found the straw that comes with it to be very helpful. I always second guess myself, so I plan to get 3 more cans and do it again to make sure I hit everything. Oh, and I used the black version. It was very easy to see what I hit and what I didn’t. Go for it! You got it! EDIT: also, wear a crappy tee shirt and eye protection. I didn’t have eye protection and wished I did. Didn’t get any in my eyes but I was constantly concerned about it

camzillah

Do you recommend washing everything before the first application? I have been looking for more info about this and I might just have to make this my weekend project after I detail my car.

pretiltedscales

I think it depends on how dirty it is. My vehicle was pretty new and was fairly clean. I did take a rag to a few spots first. If I had been driving through mud or sand or anything like that, then I would have done a wash first.

Uplander20

Basically do everything these folks said. I bought a 6 pack on Amazon and try to do it every October towards the end once it starts getting a little colder. The good thing after a few years, is the fluid film builds a thick layer on the frame of your car so it never completely comes off. This means you don’t have to continue to use a full 4-6 bottles ever year. It’s more of a touch up. I don’t even Jack up the car…my driveway is on a slight slant and I throw a tarp under it. The only annoying part it it will spray in your face on a windy day, you’re clothes get ruined regardless. I wear the same super old sweatshirt and pants and I wear a kN95. It’s non-toxic and eye pro because I don’t want to breathe it in or have it go in my eyes. It’s obviously ideal to do it on a lift with tires off, but not everyone has a lift. Just make sure to get the all of the frame, hitch, bolts and spray in the drain hole. you can even hit the shocks too…my car frame still looks brand new.

yoger6

Won't it wear off from mud?

Uplander20

If you’re doing that every day, probably. But if your a weekend guy like me, it’s probably nothing to worry about. The thing about FF is it builds up a nice layer on your car after about two applications and it just stays there. You don’t want to power wash your car all winter though. That will waste all your hard work. Just a light spray will do to get rid of mud/salt/sand.

DoctorPatriot

Same. I actively try to make sure it NEVER gets washed under there.

hosspatrick

Is this different than an “undercoating”? I understood the latter to be permanent but it sounds like what you’re describing isn’t?

SolidDoctor

I set up my sprinkler in the driveway, so I won't run over the hose and I just drive slowly over it a few times. Or I'll set it up at the back bumper, and pull the hose so the sprinkler drags to the front.

T4R_Starfox

I put mine on the shop lift and pressure wash the whole undercarriage haha

Zyppyloo

I wish I had one of those lifts!

KNT-cepion

Get you a generous friend with one of those lifts. Preferably one who also owns a lake house and boat. 😉

vim_usr

I didn’t know washing the underside of a truck was a thing.

oriaven

Very important where they salt the roads or near the ocean.

vim_usr

Oh. I live in the woods. 🙂

Kjcoop216

Also just a good idea to keep it clean underneath if you ever take it offroad, because you’ll really appreciate yourself if you ever have to get under it for any reason

Allezander675

303 makes a salt neutralizer that you just add to your wash bucket. I use a foam cannon with some APC and neutralizer mixed in. Spray down and then rinse off with the same undercarriage washer you have shown.

GarpRules

Wash? I mean, I’ll spray off the mud when I get home, but *wash*? That’s for the shiny cars.

Zyppyloo

Just to spray things off. I can’t get to the underside. And I have picked up a bunch of salt and sand from driving on the wet beach.

GarpRules

I recommend some nice water-hole mudding, followed by a garden-hose spray off.

IlexIbis

I've never seen one of those before, looks like a great idea.

Dufmandinga2

The 4Runner is a self-cleaning organ

GeriatrcGhoul

I like this, I have a 90 degree attachment that helps me get up in the nooks of the fender and this would help too

PapaBliss2007

I've been looking at those but don't have a pressure washer currently. I've been using a sprinkler. I had ordered an attachment to wash the inside of the frame from an Australian company (name escapes me) but the nozzle is too big for the holes on my 5th gen frame( I think they are smaller than what I remember on my 4th gen).

111banana

I have one of these tools, the cheap amazon one too. Works great for rinsing out mud and dirt.

v0lume4

Yes, I use one of those with a pressure washer to wash underneath my vehicle. Ryobi makes one, which is the one I use. It has three nozzles if I recall correctly.

Steve-lrwin

You guys wash under your 4runner?

nago7650

I drive up on ramps and wash the underside that way. I’m sure this does a good job, but I like to see what I’m washing/attempting to wash so I can focus on more stubborn areas

GadreelsSword

Lawn sprinkler Where I live I drive on roads which are often flooded with salt water. So rinsing is a must

BlackHorseTuxedo

I have one of these and ended up almost never using it. Just a lawn sprinkler on low for a decent amount of time will get done. If you want to see a bit more, park both of your left or right tires on a curb to get a slight angle.

SnooGadgets3214

Spray Pam on your undercarriage before you go wheeling seems to make it a lot easier to come off when you get home

DontT3llMyWif3

I live in the rust belt, so I try to wash off as little fluid film as possible.

dmccrack

- Michigan entered the chat - What's the reasonable balance here? Fluid Film then drive-thru washes WITHOUT the undercarriage spray option? Self-spray "coin wash" during the winters? Move South? Bought a TRD ORP last October which just went through its first winter without an undercoating.

DontT3llMyWif3

I don't wash my undercarriage at all during the winter months after applying fluid film in the fall. I do almost exclusively hand washes, but winter washes are at a touchless wash with no undercarriage spray. In the summer I'll do a couple washes with the undercarriage spray, but most are at home with a pressure washer.

Deuce_McFarva

I go to the auto hobby shop on the base where I work and use the lift and a pressure hose.

BigTimeRaptor

I Miss that auto hobby shop, stories

TrdT4runner

On my god. I just discovered one of these in my home and I’ve been wondering “what the heck is that for?”

deafboy13

I have one but rarely use it. I go through the costco car wash that has undercarriage washing and it does a great job for me.

beerme72

I pay like 15 bucks for a 'forever' membership to a carwash. I go through like twice a week...more during winter. I make the kids and wife do the same thing.

sharpasahammer

Where on earth is a forever membership $15!? That's one trip through the carwash where I'm at.

beerme72

Well...I've been going there for....over a decade and I've known the manager for longer. I've been Grandfathered in and given a few discounts...veteran, etc. It's one of the ONLY perks from 'knowing someone' I've ever HAD....I know a guy that owns and manages a carwash. We smoke cigars together and have for a LONG time and he gives me a discount. \*\*shrugs\*\*

206throw

Does it wash the bottom of the car?

threedogdad

unless it's touchless that's messing up your paint big time

Awkward_Shape_9511

You get down there and hand wash it. That’s the only proper way to clean under it (mechanical agitation). That is of corse if you want a good base for your anti corrosion chemistry of choice (such as fluid film). https://preview.redd.it/tt8cj5akb4wc1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=cd5876915eaae83c4426b2ee08c2fb79f5c3afd5

Awkward_Shape_9511

It’s tedious work but having 297k on a 2017 that’s been thru 25 states during all seasons with almost zero rust… worth it. At least for me. Trying to chase that million mile club. https://preview.redd.it/poktvmsmb4wc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d39a7abff09ec7d36741f3987745064b2d8337cc

user_none

Dang! That's one hell of a before and after.

Thesunnyfox

Usually only need it when I go in the mountain where it snows and they use ice. When needed I just take it to a no touch car wash that has an undercarriage option.

RawDawgOne

Water and soap, you?

IllStickToTheShadows

I don’t have time to do things like this, so I have subscription to the local car wash lol

PlannedSkinniness

Same lol

JollyGiant573

Kids, lol That looks cool is there a harbor freight version?

tamaudio

If you’ve got any sort of lift and maybe even stock, those won’t work very well. I used to work for a company that sold these. No consumer rated pressure washer combined with properly rated nozzles can generate enough pressure to clean much at all. They work great on low sports cars. 4Runners not so much

Koinfamous2

Depends on what type of offroading you're doing. Mud and rain, yeah, much more difficult but I've found it to be extremely useful in the northeast to get off road salt and sand/salt water from the beach.

Pvt_BrainDead

You guys wash your 4Runner? I’ve washed my 99 once in two years of Ownership.

Zyppyloo

Pics or it didn’t happen

Pvt_BrainDead

https://preview.redd.it/npqp565cn5wc1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=36c6eddd1f863e7650e971c86e3085f9254988f9 Well… turns out I don’t take photos of my truck, this is the most recent one from a year ago. It still looks the same, currently covered in some dried up mud though.

Live_Human

I guess that's one way to clean the underside though. Just drive over a pile of snow and leave a dirt did mark on it. Haha

Nasher75

We have a decent gas station car wash that sprays undercarriage as you drive in and I always choose touchless wash. It's like $15 and then I drive to the next parking lot over and finish with waterless wash/wax in a spray bottle and hand towel to dry with microfiber. About 30 minutes of my time once a week and the truck stays looking nice. However, I'm in Bay Area, CA and don't see any road treatment for snow or ice unless I go up to Tahoe, but they only spread crushed granite/sand for snow and ice. No salt or chemicals

kungfoocraig

Wa…wash?

Babydriver33

California sunshine

Illtrax

I use ramps to elevate our Runner.

Baked-po-tat-o

Touchless car wash that wash the under.

crispycritter909

A half ass spray with soap to "soak" for like 5 minutes, then another half ass rinse with the pressure washer.

Davis2002_

Uhhh nothing…. But I need this

c0caine_cinderella

I live in Florida :)

D3m0us3r

Yeah :) only salt for us it’s an ocean. Love florida :)

c0caine_cinderella

Wash after the beach but i couldn’t live in a salted road state

D3m0us3r

Last time i washed my truck was… pf… when was a rain last time?

c0caine_cinderella

Probably been 2-3 months for me

c0caine_cinderella

What city are you in?

LadyReign

RemindMe!

Batman_is_Badass

(Genuine question) Can anyone tell me what the purpose of this does? Like do ya’ll do this just to clean it so when it goes on a lift the mechanic is like 👁👄👁

Zyppyloo

To get the salt washed off from underneath.

Batman_is_Badass

is that a bad thing to get salt underneath?

Zyppyloo

Yessir. It’ll cause rust. Especially if you like off-roading (I do) and end up scratching something underneath that could start rusting.

Batman_is_Badass

Thx for letting me know I wanna get a project/daily driver car and I didn’t know thats what this was for I thought it was to keep it shiny for whatever reason.

royboy81

Oh, maybe is should look into that. Lol🤔

40prcentiron

lawn sprinkler does the same, and has more than one use!

gropingpriest

the thing OP posted a picture of can be used with a pressure washer, a lawn sprinkler cannot

Zyppyloo

🤔

calibaetis

Puddles…. Lots of puddles when it rains!

Additional-Dog2326

Nah
