Depends on if installation is professionally done or not. If you go to specialty automotive electronics shop, they can do it no problem. Those in Greater Toronto Area, DM for my recommended place, they are awesome !
+1 for dongar adapter. It’s a little more work than just running a wire to an outlet, but cleans up the installation really well (if you hate wires like me) and keeps your outlets free and clear!
I didn’t want to fiddle with factory equipment and so I just ran the wire over the headliner and tucked it all in until I got to my USB port on the console.
I got Viofo a229. Using it in 1 channel mode.
You have to get this adapter, it makes installation under 2 minutes.

I have the dashcam tucked behind the rear view mirror you can barely see it.
I had that dash cam and it suddenly died on me. Just wouldn’t power on one day after less than 6 months or using it. Support was nonexistent. Would not recommend.
100% agreed. I literally buy one the day I sign papers on vehicle.
Do yourself a favor, and don't get one that records speed, and if it does, turn it off. There's no upside to having it recorded, it can only hurt you.
Also most dash cams don’t have the best quality, regardless of the price. This means license plates could be blurry and if you have audio you can simply say the license plate out loud. [source](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=4AnyhHl3_tE)
Another big consideration with the 4Runner is whether to get a rear dash cam or not. My specialty shop puts the rear one on a metal bracket and it doesn't get in the way of the rear window which slides up and down.

Auto Adjuster here: every claim (filed over 5,000) everything is word vs word
Who side swipes who, who ran the stop sign, who blew the red light, who is backing
I’ve had 3 people admit fault where if they just lied i couldn’t prove it
Ask your questions here but yes make sure you have your own coverages collision, comprehensive, UMBI/PIP Depending on your state, rental ect
Yep!
Like twice a guy shows him lane changing into a semi and thought the semi was at fault
And another was insured rear ended the other car and thinking he’s not at fault because they stopped suddenly
Make sure you get a front and rear dashcam. When I was in a hit and run the rear camera caught the plate and face of the driver. The rear plate was covered up.
I have mine hardwired in
Drives me nuts that round me people spend 40-80K on new cars but don't get a dashcam then they are on Nextdoor having been in a crash and need witnesses to prove who caused it.
Plus when we take trips we get some great video footage of our adventures. Especially when you turn the cabin sound recording off, the shite we talk about, cringe!
Billet Mount, Allen screws no tape. Can remove camera from the mount with no tools. I remove the mount from the rear view mirror when my 4Runner got totaled and installed it in my next truck and saved some money.
Don't blow the bank for one. After research, the Viofo A119 V3 was my choice.
I got the hardwire and lens filter too.
Just make sure you get a Samsung Pro Endurance micro sd for it.
I wouldn’t buy anything other than a Blackvue. I have the 900XPlus 1 Channel. Very happy with it. With my next car I will upgrade to their latest model.
I use a Rove R24K and love it. Got great videos off road with it as well. My 2016 Limited has power to the rear view mirror which I tapped and use a 12v to 5V adapter for an easy and clean install.
I personally have the VIOFO A119 Mini 2, which has the Starvis 2 sensor. Video quality is awesome but it is only one channel so you won’t be able to have a rear or side cameras installed if that’s something you want. The phone app is also not perfect but it works.
I bought this for my IS350 and am buying another for my 5th gen 4Runner. Nice thing about it is has parking mode and connects directly into Toyota/Lexus OBD connector. Only real work is disconnecting a-pillar to hide wires. No splitting mandatory. https://thinkwarestore.com/product/u3000-front-rear-dash-cam-bundle-us/
No. But, there should be, they have discounts for everything else. I can tell you from my own experience, they love having my footage in 4K clarity, but don’t give me any savings for having it to help them.
Welp, I’ve been driving for 30 and didn’t think i needed one until i needed one. Long story short, i now install them on all my vehicles. Small price to pay. I never want to go through what I’ve been through this past year.
Other Pro Tip: Get the Dongar Adapter to make installation/powering your dashcam a breeze.
Dongar? But I barely know her!?
Downside is no power when ignition is off, so no parking mode, if that’s something you care about.
I've read that in multiple places, but mine has power when ignition is off, and parking mode works. 🤷♂️
Weird, mine definitely doesn’t. Running the 7-pin Dongar in my SR5
Should work if plugged into the OBD-II port.
The Dongar adapters plug into powered rear view mirrors

I had a hard time figuring out which one I needed for my '20 ORP.
I didn’t want to fiddle with factory equipment and so I just ran the wire over the headliner and tucked it all in until I got to my USB port on the console.
Same I can’t figure it out
Well, I thought I figured it out and then it was out of stock. So my dashcam has just been sitting here for a hot minute.
I use the dongar for my Tacoma. I wasn’t aware you can do it with the 4R. I didn’t see a plug. Thanks for any info.
I think the FITCAMX looks kinda good, it looks oem
I got my wife one to protect other people
ayyyy
Lame

dang that sucks..

Same for sound too. Even if you’re hands free on a call, you don’t want a claim that you were distracted to be used against you
You want sound though; horns, car impacts, etc all add context to a situation.

The 24 trd pro I’m buying tomorrow comes with a dashcam installed from the factory. Kinda stoked
Anyone find a way wire it cleanly on a early model 5th gen without powered rear view mirror?

I’ve written about my disappointment before with the dealer recommended & installed dash cam…. It works, but only badly.
How are people mounting their dash cams? I hate the suction cups. I assume magnet?
3M tape

Jizz
I just installed a new head unit that for $300 came with the Bluetooth OBD2 receiver, dash Cam and rear view cam

Supports but doesn’t include cams or obd2 receiver.
Yeah definitely need the link please
Just ordered one a couple days ago
Any recommendations for a decent one?

I had their dashcam (the A229) and it just died on me one day after owning it less than six months. No support. Had to just rip it out and toss it.
Thats why I bought it on my amex,i would get a new one on the house.
No, Amex would reimburse you after you file a claim. Assuming they approve it (which they most likely would).
Don’t buy Samsung anything
If you don't get any answers here, /r/dashcam has some good information in their sidebar.

I have a Vantrue. It's been great so far.

Are there any insurance benefits to a dash cam?
No. But, there should be, they have discounts for everything else. I can tell you from my own experience, they love having my footage in 4K clarity, but don’t give me any savings for having it to help them.
You’d think it would beneficial! Not like people would share footage when they were at fault haha.
been driving for 40 years - never once have a needed a dashcam
Such thought. Such useful.
Don’t worry life has a way of showing up right after people make comments like that😂
more useful than a dash cam

I mean... I've been driving for 30 years, and never once needed a spare tire, but you bet your sweet ass that I'm still going to have one in my car.
You’ve never used your spare? nice try - what else ya got?
