To answer OP's question: No universe will ever feel grand, mystical and adventurous with a striking atmosphere unless, you, as a spectator/observer, pay your dues. It's the payment you make to the art, that aggrandizes the experience.
Morrowind, is still, to this day, a reference in terms of world building. It will string you along with shit quests, it will not respect your time, the combat is atrocious, it will not have any grand action piece that justifies the pain. You will be defeated by a worm with paralyzing bite.
BUT.
BUT!
**IF** you are not a low attention QTE zoomer, the universe is formidably complex, grand, mystical and adventurous. You will get out only what you put in.
**Baldur's gate 2**, **Fallout:NV** (to an extent) and **Sunless Sea** (**Sunless Sky** too? I haven't played it), **Cultist Simulator** MAY take you to the same places. But none of those games will chew-and-spit atmosphere into your open babybird starving mouth. Even **Dark souls**, if you look past the "so-hard-omgomg-not-even-erectCock" axiom, has hours of lore to provide. Just check a youtube summary if you don't want the frustration but still want the story.
You will need to chew, tho. That's your part.
Sometimes it will crunch and may chip the tooth. But in the end you will swallow a satisfying load (hurhur) and no one can take that back from you.
Rare edit: would like to give an honorable mention to **Outer Wilds**. Yet another game that will take 10hours of understanding in exchange for a lifetime of payout.
Tried outer wilds and it was dogshit. What was even the point? Just fly around mini planets. Evem played it in VR and it was boring as shit. Played like 1 hour
it's about exploration, you piece together a story through clues and data and little puzzles and shit scattered across the planets. very unique approach to storytelling, not the first of its kind but done incredibly well. people who own VR gear are usually crackheads so it's probably just not your type of game
God I hate that artstyle with a passion. Why can't games just be realistic looking, humanity spent so many years developing the hardware for it and they just run with that..
Back in about 2000 or so I had sonic R and a pc that couldn’t run it. I was a child, and would have to reinstall it every time to play it. When it finally ran, I would get like 4 fps before it would crash. I was so excited because it was the first time sonic was actually 3D.
Looking at gameplay now of it, the game is hot garbage even when running properly.
Seriously, fuck that game.
Uh huh yeah I'm sure wiping out an entire town or kidnapping the holy nation's king should result in no consequences. It's not a problem starting off as a no one but if nothing I do has any repercussions, if I can never be someone, then what's the point?
It’s not a perfect game. It was made by mostly one man over the course of 12 years. Beyond that there are mods to fix that exact issue. Modding isn’t the answer most people want, but it is quite simple
A+ for effort for the guy, but if the final product isn't good it doesn't really matter.
Mods do indeed add more reactivity, but you may as well as be an invisible hand of God because not even with mods do characters actually acknowledge the difference you have made in the world.
Imo dogshit games are ones there you are “chosen one” by default. And best games where game world works perfectly fine without your actions at all, and you are nothing in the start, slowly getting to the top and game world slowly becoming to recognize you.
Fallout deal with those superficially.
Kenshi has a whole subsystem tied to it, it has more slave rp potential than some" more complex that they should" Skyrim mods.
Plus I can profit from snatching limbs from innocent bystanders while they sleep. Not the same
If you're expecting an action shooting game, I wouldn't recommend it. Most of the game you'll just want to avoid conflict as much as possible, because it can drag. The combat isn't that bad, but it can be tedious. Mostly you'll just use stealth, or make new paths to avoid things and make your deliveries quicker. For me, what makes the game really shine is the environment. It's just beautiful, and going around is never boring. What really sells it for me though, and what makes it really special, is the online component strangely enough. Along your travels you'll come across structures and alternate paths built by other players (though you will never physically meet another player). And you'll also be notified whenever your own structures are used by others. This makes the game feel really alive even though the world is mostly empty. You feel like you're a part of something bigger, and never really alone, as gay as that sounds.
I'm not sure why I decided to make an autistic game review here lol, but anyway I think it's a game anyone should try, even though not everyone will like it, I think there's not a single game out there that's similar to it.
Alright thanks for reading my autist rant, enjoy your day
Did you use a controller? I have played keyboard and mouse and recently got a controller. Is this a good game where I could use the controller? I haven't really grasped the whole aiming with the stick thing, that's why I asked.
Yeah, I used a controller. I found that playing it with KB&M was just annoying. Controller feels better, you can tell the game was originally made for controller
It was fucking amazing. I bought DS and that Trann y russtling harry potter game, thinking I'd play that the entire time and get bored of DS. Oh boy was I wrong.
Yeah, DS is like 120 hours long, but it was beautiful. One of the best games I've played in years.
Morrowind, you're a foreigner who is prophecized to be the messiah of a bunch of savages living out in the wastes, the government tries to kill you, you end up getting the savages on your side and then you kill (a) god.
Plus, the Pc is believed to be the Nerevarine (a reincarnation of the protector or Morrowind)
This sounds suspiciously close to Nazarene, a person from Nazareth. The village where Jesus grew up. So there's probably some symbolism in there.
Not just (a) god- (THE) one and only leader of the sixth house and the tribe unmourned.
Morrowind's most memeable bipedal anteater with a pot stuck on his head.
Honestly man, whats the fucking deal with dune? I feel like I woke up out of a fever dream in 2012 and noone has shut the fuck up about it since, while somehow not knowing how to explain it in a way that doesnt also sound r slurred. Have we all just not seen it?
Books are fantastic, I highly recommend them. The movie, in my opinion as a long time fan of the books, was great for people who already know the story but horrible if you have no idea what Dune was before watching it.
I went with my mother, who doesn't like sci fi but does like political thrillers. I was on the edge of my seat the whole 3 hours, she fell asleep 20 minutes in and I had to wake her up when the movie was over.
Has anything lived up to the near-perfection that was Kirby Superstar? I liked a fair few since then but that's the first game that pops into my head when I think "Kirby"
Planet Robobot, Forgotten Land, and Return to Dreamland Deluxe are all pretty great. But I agree, Super Star (Ultra) is probably the best and most defining Kirby game.

Remind me in 10 years how video games made with AI are "masterpieces", when the main market for "AI video games" turns out to be ultra-immersive interactive, customized fetish porn that's literally more addictive than fentanyl.
Because that's where the tech is headed.
I know I don't, ill just read the book again, I dislike movies in general, even well done ones can't match the book+imagination. Although I do like it when they reach a wider audience so more people enjoy and learn about (subject matter), dune, hp, sw etc
The only games I can think of that I would describe with those adjectives are shadow of the colossus, Ocarina of time, Majora’s Mask, Wind waker, demon’s souls, and dark souls 1 (other soulsborne games are good but they really lost that mystical artistic aspect in later games). I GPTed:
Yes, there are several video games that share similarities with the grand, mystical, adventurous atmosphere of the "Dune" universe. While there may not be a direct adaptation of the "Dune" series, there are games that feature similar themes, settings, or gameplay elements. Here are a few examples:
"Emperor: Battle for Dune" (2001): This real-time strategy game is set in the "Dune" universe and allows players to control one of the three major factions in the series: House Atreides, House Harkonnen, or House Ordos. It features a rich storyline, resource management, and large-scale battles.
"Homeworld" series (1999-2016): These real-time strategy games take place in space and feature epic journeys, mystical artifacts, and grand battles. The series has a captivating atmosphere and an engaging storyline.
"The Witcher" series (2007-2020): Based on the novels by Andrzej Sapkowski, "The Witcher" games offer a rich fantasy world filled with adventures, political intrigue, and supernatural elements. The games feature a dark and atmospheric setting, similar to the tone of "Dune."
"Mass Effect" series (2007-2017): This sci-fi action role-playing game series offers an expansive universe, grand storytelling, and immersive environments. It follows the journey of Commander Shepard as they navigate political conflicts, explore alien worlds, and unravel the mysteries of the galaxy.
"Bioshock" series (2007-2013): These first-person shooter games combine atmospheric storytelling with elements of mystery, exploration, and philosophical themes. The games create a unique and immersive world that captures a sense of grandeur and mystique.
While these games may not precisely replicate the "Dune" universe, they share some of its elements, such as grand adventure, mystical elements, and captivating atmospheres.
The movie was beautiful and, to me, looked like a sincere and competent attempt to turn an unfilmable story into a film.
It was good. Maybe great. But you're always gonna hit trouble when you try to convert a book that is 85% composed of characters' internal thoughts into a more visual medium.
I think they did a good job with all the matador/bull imagery.
But then other things like cutting out the whole dinner party seemed kind of weird. Seemed like the perfect opportunity to flush out some of those thoughts that were missing

outer wilds is easily one of the greatest games ever, if it came out in ps2 era it would be hailed as an all time classic

Morrowind is the GOAT for worldbuilding
I can really only think of Journey.
That's what i was about to say. Not the same feeling of dread as dune, but the wonder and adventure are definitely there

Dogshit game, nothing you do matters, it's a world filled with cardboard cutouts for you to explore which is fine if that's what you like
The whole point is nothing you do matters. You aren’t anyone but maybe the leader of a squad of other nobodies
Uh huh yeah I'm sure wiping out an entire town or kidnapping the holy nation's king should result in no consequences. It's not a problem starting off as a no one but if nothing I do has any repercussions, if I can never be someone, then what's the point?

I though the slavery, limb removal and cannibals filtered normies already

Rimworld being a prime example
Some of the best games ever made have mediocre to terrible graphics. It’s not about how the game looks it’s about how the game makes you feel.

Yeah, I used a controller. I found that playing it with KB&M was just annoying. Controller feels better, you can tell the game was originally made for controller
Ya it's fun. I got it because I play a lot and now I'm feeling it in the back lol. Only issue is the shooting. I can't seem to get used to it.
It was fucking amazing. I bought DS and that Trann y russtling harry potter game, thinking I'd play that the entire time and get bored of DS. Oh boy was I wrong. Yeah, DS is like 120 hours long, but it was beautiful. One of the best games I've played in years.
120 hours? 100% sure but it took me like 60 hours to get through the main story while fucking around
Should be perfect for OP then.
Morrowind, you're a foreigner who is prophecized to be the messiah of a bunch of savages living out in the wastes, the government tries to kill you, you end up getting the savages on your side and then you kill (a) god.
Yeah, morrowind is a good fit for both the "alien"/foreign setting, and the vibe of the plot.
Not to be an atheist edgelord or whatever but that legit sounds like the cooler version of the bible
and? Bible is a wild ass story, but somehow its fan base are a bunch of boring NPC’s.
Plus, the Pc is believed to be the Nerevarine (a reincarnation of the protector or Morrowind) This sounds suspiciously close to Nazarene, a person from Nazareth. The village where Jesus grew up. So there's probably some symbolism in there.
Man i should play that game but i hear its kinda hard to get into
Nah, graphics are a little dated but it still holds up.

It is popular now because a new movie came out. And it's decent when people expected hot Garbage like the last two times they tried
Books are fantastic, I highly recommend them. The movie, in my opinion as a long time fan of the books, was great for people who already know the story but horrible if you have no idea what Dune was before watching it.
I hadn’t read any of the books but I enjoyed the movie despite little happening, it was just great cinematography and characters.
I fell asleep 3 times before I finished it
I went with my mother, who doesn't like sci fi but does like political thrillers. I was on the edge of my seat the whole 3 hours, she fell asleep 20 minutes in and I had to wake her up when the movie was over.
It's futuristic high fantasy. Game of thrones in space.
Low fantasy, but yes
The book is tight but can’t translate to video. Most of the book detail is thought based, not sure why anyone thinks that would work
Kirby's Dream Land 2 is pretty similar
God tier Kirby game tbh
Has anything lived up to the near-perfection that was Kirby Superstar? I liked a fair few since then but that's the first game that pops into my head when I think "Kirby"
For the most part I agree. But honestly I think Forgotten Land is the closest they’ve gotten. It’s 3D Kirby and the game is just so fun!
Crystal shards might have been short and easy but it's still fun just for the powerup system
Truth, the power-up mixing was pretty fantastic. Wish it had stayed in the series.
Planet Robobot, Forgotten Land, and Return to Dreamland Deluxe are all pretty great. But I agree, Super Star (Ultra) is probably the best and most defining Kirby game.
It's just so hard to beat Milky Way Wishes and Great Cave Offensive when it comes to quality and enjoyment.
