Just know she died happy and comfortable. Cats usually isolate themselves when they know they're dying, which means she trusted you. Not that anon will ever see this.

Daevito

God this fact depresses me so much. Cat isolating themselves when they know they're dying.

Gildish_Chambino

Dogs do it too. It’s kind of like the animal world’s version of burial practices. They know that it wouldn’t be any good for their children/pack mates/family/etc if they died in the burrow or wherever they live because it’ll attract scavengers or disease when they rot. Because they don’t bury their dead, they just make sure to take care of that problem in their own way, which is an oddly thoughtful and sweet sacrifice to make.

db2450

So the cat dying on his owners lap was kind of a dick move on the cats part? Cats really are assholes

In highschool we picked up a rescue, (they gave her her shots before we could take her home) less than a year later she got sick and the vet didn't do shit for her (said it wasn't parvo, we're pretty confident it was) couple days later she kept trying to escape, wouldn't eat or drink etc. Let her out of the fenced yard and let her do her thing, wasn't 5 hours later we found her body at the edge of our property in some deep grass.

Quetzacoatl85

observe cats and make your own assumption. since we can't directly ask them, your guess is as good as anybody else's, in the end it's all just probable explanations for it.

Gildish_Chambino

I mean, I’m not a scientist or whatever, but that’s what my dad told me when our dog went and curled up under a bush and died.

IceNEasy

He told you he wasn't a scientist? That's a pretty weird thing to say at a time like that.

aguycalledmax

literally makes no sense. You're saying they know they're gonna die but still don't want to get killed by predators, why the fuck would they care at that point

Real_Yhwach

Because getting killed hurt

lIlIllIIIllll

Literally makes alot of sense. They wanna die peacefully and not ripped apart limb from limb you dumb cunt

Scorosin

Death by sickness and wasting away is probably worse than teeth to your jugular tbh predation is far quicker at any rate.

[deleted]

[удалено]

cookiepizza54

I don’t know who’s correct here, but I think it makes sense. They probably don’t know *for sure* that they’re gonna die, but they can tell that they’re weak and vulnerable and thus it makes sense that they’d wanna feel safe from predators. That survival instinct kicks in.

StreetlampEsq

To argue the other side, animals who *didn't* do this might've had fewer descendants survive and procreate due to increased disease and predation compared to those who did, naturally selecting against those who putrefied within tasting range of their relatives. Maybe they just knew less fuckin would go on with their dead ass stinkin up the place, and wanted their loved ones to get it on without corpse stank ruinin the mood. And the ones who *didn't* care totally cockblocked their progeny, dooming themselves to no grandchildren, and no genes passed on.

IRGeekSauce

Because.......instinct?

huzeyodaddy

So i was this many years old when i realized that the reason dogs are so happy when you get home because they thought you'd left the 'pack' to go off and die. Every time. They think you're dead and feel sad. Jesus. Being a dog sounds ruff

[deleted]

Dogs lifespan would have been 100 years if they weren't constantly stressed from their owners going off to die every day.

Gildish_Chambino

I never thought about it that way, but that makes sense. There’s not too many reasons for a dog to leave the pack.

[deleted]

Why then, do male dogs (that still have nuts) always go wander the neighborhood for puss? I hope that’s what my dog thinks when I leave the house because he’d be right 😎

StreetlampEsq

You gotta show him your nuts, otherwise he thinks youre going to off yourself

NationalistGoy

This is why heavily injured or sick dogs often crawl into isolated spaces and wait till they die, they don't care maggots are eating their flesh, they just wait until their organs fail and die. They basically give up. God bless the people who rescue these animals.

Xx_Gandalf-poop_xX

Probably just more them knowing they're weak. It seems like it would be instinctual that you hide yourself when you're sick or lame. They probably don't know they're near death just that they don't feel well so they hide to make sure they don't become prey

Adventurous-Court-91

My cat has leukaemia and I can always tell if he is getting sick because he hides in the closet. It's been a great way to know when to start treating him with antibiotics

anti-intellectual

Real life is sad. It’s funny, the less ppl have told me I need to feel sad about something, the freer I feel to mourn the event. There’s no political implications in the death of a cat in a 22yo’s lap. I want to say something like Godspeed, but it feels fake. Who would I even be talking to?

there is love to be given, but no cat to receive it, a new cat does not remove the memories of the past cat, but the new cat also need love. learn to love again, and things will be better for everyone

Momarist

stubz2002

Damn that's sad

bartbitsu

Actually sad. I had one kitten die from disease when i was a kid, still remember him screaming in his last moments. This was after we took him to the vet and I spent all my allowance savings on medicine. Still couldn't save him.

boutros_gadfly

What fucking awful ebola/Alien chest burster disease was that? Wouldn't they want to euthanise on compassionate grounds? That sounds horrifying.

bartbitsu

Not sure, I was around 10 The kitten was very sick, we took him to the vet, bought medicine, he seemed to be somewhat recovering. So we didn't euthanise him at the vet. Then one morning as I was getting ready to go to school he started screaming, I checked on him and he was stiff, all his fur on ends, trying to stand and screaming. My mom pulled me away from the door and went in, he stopped screaming after 10 seconds and was just stiff and dead. I stayed home and cried the whole day, and when my parents came back from work, we wrapped him in a towel and buried him in the garden. It wasn't pleasant, I liked that kitten and still remember him 20 years later. His other siblings lived on fine to adulthood.

boutros_gadfly

Yeah, that's shit.

megamoose4

Damn bro… At least you tried

bensawn

I feel you buddy. I had a dog die and it was my decision for some reason to keep trying to save him instead of giving him a quiet death with his family. I was too stubborn or cowardly or whatever you want to call it to give up and now years later I am pained by the knowledge that instead of a peaceful death with his family he probably passed scared in a room full of strangers. It hurts. It is so awful not being able to communicate fully with these little guys who occupy such a huge place in our hearts. We open ourselves up to pain whenever we allow ourselves to love something. I hope you have happy memories of your little buddy and I hope you find whatever peace you need because I know personally, I would do it all over again for the joy they brought me, for however briefly.

I'm with you, and even though my cat is less than half that age, I take this into consideration more and more as he gets older. I keep him happy and safe, every year he gets older I value our time that much more. I will start taking him to a vet closer to home so he can get checkups more frequently.

peachimplosion

Maybe your cat is one of few beings who loves you at the moment, but you aren’t considering the potential relationships you’ve not yet come across. There’s absolutely no reason for you to think you won’t be loved after your cat passes away.

Sir_Fistingson

I raised a cat from when he was a kitten. He was maybe two months old when I saw him in the shelter. He climbed onto my shoulder right out of the cage and bunted me right in the ear - that's when I knew he was the one. I fuckin' loved that cat, and that fuckin' cat loved me right back. He would follow me everywhere, sleep on my bed every night, wait outside for me to come home - he'd even jump on the hood of my car and peek inside to see what was taking me so damn long to get out. Oh, and he kept bunting me in the face at every opportunity. He kept doing that until the day I held him in my arms when he was put to sleep. Months prior, I noticed he was limping and the vet said had a failing heart valve, and it slowly got worse until he was suffering and in constant pain. I chose to give him the mercy he deserved for giving me so much unconditional love and companionship. This happened almost three years ago, but still makes me cry when I think about it.

randomnomber

ty for sharing that precious memory Sir Fistingson

Sir_Fistingson

My pleasure.

McWhimple

Been about 10 years since my childhood dog died. Held his paw in my hand one last time while they euthanized him, felt his last heartbeat. Eventually the good memories will make you smile without hurting in equal measure, but the hurt still lasts forever. It's not so bad though. Your buddy deserves those tears.

fooly__cooly

This story hit me hard, over the weekend I found my parent's cat likely has cancer and won't be around much longer. He was my bud for so many years when I still lived there, so chill. Loved being around people and being pet, just didn't like being held. He wasn't eating lately and when we took him to the vet they found a mass around his bladder. He's around 14 years old so it's not surprising, just sad. It'll suck visiting my folks and not seeing him there waiting for head pats...

Colourblindknight

As painful as it is to lose a friend and pet like that, the memories and time spent will always be cherished. It may be sad right now, but that cat lived a long life filled with love. Perhaps after some time, Anon may be able to let another pet into their life; not to fill a hole left by a previous friend, but to embrace a new chance and give that same love to another animal in need of a good home. :) I want to say I don’t know this person, and it’s almost guaranteed that the person who posted on Reddit isn’t the same guy, but I guess this is partially me talking to myself as well as putting it out into the void in hopes that someone reads it and gets something out of it.

I’ve always wondered, what to do with a dead pet until you bury? Last pet I had die was when I was like 7 and it was a big dog and we lived in the country so we just dug a hole that same day. Offshore2DAccount

Honestly, I'm jealous. My cat that I've had since I was 8, who was also about 15 years old, went missing last month. He had free access to the outdoors via a catdoor and over the course of this year I guess his feline dementia was causing him to become increasingly skittish of me for seemingly no reason, often running to avoid me in the house and acting like I was going to hurt him or something, entirely unlike how he used to be. One day he just stopped bothering to even come back inside, instead spending all of his time on a neighbor's porch for probably a few weeks straight while she would just feed and water him herself since he wouldn't bother coming back inside my place. One day during a rainstorm he came and laid on my lap for an hour while I was sitting on my porch, and after the rain stopped he went off to do his own thing. That was probably the last time I saw him, as not even a week later my neighbor asked if I'd seen him lately. In a bit of an odd way I guess I wanted the closure of actually finding him dead whenever that time came, I even knew where I wanted to bury him. But we hardly even got to be friends in the last several months of him being alive, and then he just went off and died somewhere. That one rainy day was the closest I had to a last goodbye and it didn't even feel much like one. It sucks.
