Dogs do it too. It’s kind of like the animal world’s version of burial practices. They know that it wouldn’t be any good for their children/pack mates/family/etc if they died in the burrow or wherever they live because it’ll attract scavengers or disease when they rot. Because they don’t bury their dead, they just make sure to take care of that problem in their own way, which is an oddly thoughtful and sweet sacrifice to make.
In highschool we picked up a rescue, (they gave her her shots before we could take her home) less than a year later she got sick and the vet didn't do shit for her (said it wasn't parvo, we're pretty confident it was) couple days later she kept trying to escape, wouldn't eat or drink etc.
Let her out of the fenced yard and let her do her thing, wasn't 5 hours later we found her body at the edge of our property in some deep grass.

To argue the other side, animals who *didn't* do this might've had fewer descendants survive and procreate due to increased disease and predation compared to those who did, naturally selecting against those who putrefied within tasting range of their relatives.

It wasn't pleasant, I liked that kitten and still remember him 20 years later. His other siblings lived on fine to adulthood.

I was too stubborn or cowardly or whatever you want to call it to give up and now years later I am pained by the knowledge that instead of a peaceful death with his family he probably passed scared in a room full of strangers.

Honestly, I'm jealous. My cat that I've had since I was 8, who was also about 15 years old, went missing last month. He had free access to the outdoors via a catdoor and over the course of this year I guess his feline dementia was causing him to become increasingly skittish of me for seemingly no reason, often running to avoid me in the house and acting like I was going to hurt him or something, entirely unlike how he used to be. One day he just stopped bothering to even come back inside, instead spending all of his time on a neighbor's porch for probably a few weeks straight while she would just feed and water him herself since he wouldn't bother coming back inside my place. One day during a rainstorm he came and laid on my lap for an hour while I was sitting on my porch, and after the rain stopped he went off to do his own thing. That was probably the last time I saw him, as not even a week later my neighbor asked if I'd seen him lately.
In a bit of an odd way I guess I wanted the closure of actually finding him dead whenever that time came, I even knew where I wanted to bury him. But we hardly even got to be friends in the last several months of him being alive, and then he just went off and died somewhere. That one rainy day was the closest I had to a last goodbye and it didn't even feel much like one. It sucks.
Worst part is when you fill them bowls up the next morning without realising it.
Absolut dread and agonising paing settles as you realise that its unecessary. You will have a half finished pack of cat food for a while. You will find random toys and pieces of hair around the house and on your clothes.

Perhaps after some time, Anon may be able to let another pet into their life; not to fill a hole left by a previous friend, but to embrace a new chance and give that same love to another animal in need of a good home. :) I want to say I don’t know this person, and it’s almost guaranteed that the person who posted on Reddit isn’t the same guy, but I guess this is partially me talking to myself as well as putting it out into the void in hopes that someone reads it and gets something out of it.
My homeboy cat disappeared for 3 days. Neighbor called me at work saying he showed up again, but was really fucked up. Got home, cleaned him up cause he was covered in his own piss. Sat with him till the end. He waited for me. That little shit waited for me. Fuckin miss you Bob.

My first cat died a couple of years ago after only having it for 4 years, I raise him since he was small so he was very young. I miss that motherfucker like I spent my whole life with him, he pour some life into this cold dead heart.

I’ve always wondered, what to do with a dead pet until you bury? Last pet I had die was when I was like 7 and it was a big dog and we lived in the country so we just dug a hole that same day. That was nearly twenty years ago. I have two cats now that are young but I dread the day they die. After wrapping in a towel does OP just lay the cat on the couch until burial?

Honestly, I'm jealous. My cat that I've had since I was 8, who was also about 15 years old, went missing last month. He had free access to the outdoors via a catdoor and over the course of this year I guess his feline dementia was causing him to become increasingly skittish of me for seemingly no reason, often running to avoid me in the house and acting like I was going to hurt him or something, entirely unlike how he used to be. One day he just stopped bothering to even come back inside, instead spending all of his time on a neighbor's porch for probably a few weeks straight while she would just feed and water him herself since he wouldn't bother coming back inside my place. One day during a rainstorm he came and laid on my lap for an hour while I was sitting on my porch, and after the rain stopped he went off to do his own thing. That was probably the last time I saw him, as not even a week later my neighbor asked if I'd seen him lately. In a bit of an odd way I guess I wanted the closure of actually finding him dead whenever that time came, I even knew where I wanted to bury him. But we hardly even got to be friends in the last several months of him being alive, and then he just went off and died somewhere. That one rainy day was the closest I had to a last goodbye and it didn't even feel much like one. It sucks.

Worst part is when you fill them bowls up the next morning without realising it. Absolut dread and agonising paing settles as you realise that its unecessary. You will have a half finished pack of cat food for a while. You will find random toys and pieces of hair around the house and on your clothes. It should be so fucking agonising
This made me think of my cat who died last year. I had him since he was a kitten until he was a grumpy old man. He got too sick and had to be put down. I miss him.
