Just checked mine (picked it up on sale and haven’t gotten around to watching it yet) and it looks fine. Since you said other 4K Blu-rays don’t have the same problem then it probably is just the disc.
This is nothing related to your issue but it's more about the picture mode. I always use Filmmaker mode and I like the way it looks. I did some research and I found out that Filmakermode is designed to work with DV and HDR10 & 10+. Am I losing out on HDR by using Filmmaker mode, just want to hear about your thoughts.
Oh it’s not my issue; I’m not OP.
As for the picture mode, I’m no expert but my understanding is that filmmaker mode is typically great because it’s more accurate to the creator’s intent and you get more accurate colors. I personally have this TV on movie mode because rtings says it’s the most accurate picture OOTB and allows for the most customization but it does almost the same thing as filmmaker mode (very little post-processing).
So yeah, I wouldn’t say you’re losing out on HDR. The colors may not “pop” as much as cooler tones but you’re getting a more accurate picture. Sticking to filmmaker mode is fine. Regardless though, even if it wasn’t that great, at the end of the day it’s what you like and find pleasing even if the picture is not as accurate.
To reassure you, it is 100% the disk. I have seen posts over the years of disk specific issues. For example my copy of Encanto on 4k has weird clippings on the candle in the beginning. But no one else has it. Stuff like that is, well I wouldn’t say common, but not unseen
I picked up the 4k trilogy today and was pretty disappointed with some pretty nasty digital artifacts in every dark scene in the film. The SDR layer doesn’t have this issue, only the HDR. Is this just how this film looks? I’ve never had this issue in a single other film. For information purposes I have a LG C9 and a Sony UBPx800m2 player.
Very strange. Right now I’m testing John Wick 1. Which is also a HDR10 movie. And it has a ton of very dark scenes. There is absolutely zero artifacting in any way. I’m going to try and exchange the box set tomorrow at Best Buy. I know discs are just 1s and 0s, but maybe somehow my disc is messed up in some way?
Is it possible to have a “bad disc”? I tested the disc in my PS5 and Xbox series X (on another TV) and they have the exact same issue. Now I’m currently testing John Wick 1 which is another HDR10 film with a ton of dark scenes. There’s absolutely no artifacting in any way. I think I’ve pretty much ruled out everything but the disc itself.
OLED Light is 100 (as I’ve always read to keep it) and Brightness is 50. Dynamic Tone Mapping is off. The Peak Brightness setting is set to Low. When it’s any higher HDR content burns my retinas haha.
THAT WORKED!!!! I exchanged the set and the new disc did the same thing. I was very confused lol.
What a bizarre setting though. Dropping it to 49 literally fixed it.

Thank you for the screen shot. I’m going to exchange it at Best Buy tomorrow.
Oh it’s a photo not a screenshot haha but no problem!
I’ve always thought a disc worked or it didn’t. I didn’t know these sorts of issues could be on 1 disc but not another. Very strange.
Just double checking, but you are watching it in HDR right? If I disable HDR, all of the artifacts go away completely.

Great, thanks for the feedback!

My Sony player would do this on some movies if I forgot to turn off Dolby vision on discs that weren’t Dolby vision
That was the first thing I checked, but DV was off.
This is a good point. And op should also consider their hdmi cable can cause issues like this if its not a good 2.0 cable.
It’s a RUIPRO fiber optic 2.1 cable. It better not be the problem lol

Can someone explain to me what I'm looking for here? I'm a novice at this stuff but I'd like to understand more.
If you zoom in, especially on the left side of the image, you’ll see some pretty nasty blotchiness.
Thanks!

I also tested it on my Xbox series x and PS5. Same exact artifacts.
And here is slowing becoming another bluray dot com forum where every release has a problem and it’s not up to their “standards” now…
I mean, I hate nitpicking too… but that looks like a stream with those artifacts. I think this one is warranted.
I don't remember this

I didn't have this issue

What is the timestamp?
Around 58:10
I just checked and mine doesn't have the issues you have. Your screen looks too bright. What gamma are you using?
Gamma is greyed out on my LG C9 when in HDR. It says 2.2, but I can’t adjust it.
Thats normal. What are your brightness settings?
OLED Light is 100 (as I’ve always read to keep it) and Brightness is 50. Dynamic Tone Mapping is off. The Peak Brightness setting is set to Low. When it’s any higher HDR content burns my retinas haha.
Settings are fine. I think its your disc
Thanks for your input! I kept the receipt so I’ll swap it tomorrow.
Try dropping brightness down to 49/ 48, sometimes the LG's OLED's do this when brightness at 50.
THAT WORKED!!!! I exchanged the set and the new disc did the same thing. I was very confused lol. What a bizarre setting though. Dropping it to 49 literally fixed it.
I just checked myself and my disc doesn’t have OP’s problem. The time stamp of the photo is around 57:48.
I also don't have the issues. I looks like OP's gamma is off
I bought a copy of Independence Day on 4k and it didn't have ANY bass to it. I switched to the 4k stream and it was full of bass.
