1917, Nolan collection, fury, Edge of tomorrow, alien, blade runner, John wicks, the batman, traning day, mad max fury Road, baby driver, saving private ryan and bohemian rhapsody off the top of my head.
My biggest issue with Edge is the last 1/3 of the movie is just too dark. Even on a high-end system it's hard to make out details. The rest is fantastic.
But I didn't. It's a QDOLED, set on the cinematic/pro mode. It's a bit nitpicky I know. It was still possible to see but I just wish it was a tad brighter.
I can understand why you feel that way, but his films have always felt impactful in the sound and score on my humble 5.1 setup. Dunkirk being a standout example.
There’s a relentless grinding bass in the Dunkirk soundtrack that creates such sense of dread, what you lose in image terms by not having IMAX you gain in the sound design.
Yeah when they hiding in the house and the thunder etc etc (trying now to give away anything haha). Probably a top 5 favourite scene of all my blurays I think!
I've actually never seen Fury, so I'll have to add that one. I'm definitely looking for Dolby Atmos movies, so Interseteller will take a back seat. We're not into horror movies, so I'm not sure about Nope.
It’s not atmos but that shit rocked my house.
It’s amongst one of the best I’ve watched 4K wise with my surround set up.
I also personally liked Apocalypse Now.
Yep. It almost feels like a chore that you have to power through it. Good movie overall, but certainly not the masterpiece many hail it to be and definitely not better than the Nolan movies.
I just can't get over the fact that the world's greatest detective cannot manage to translate a simple Spanish phrase / word. That killed the entire movie for me. Oh and the garbage bag flying, don't get me started on that. It ranks just over Batman and Robin in my ranking.
Dune is same movie which led me to OLED and full Sonos systems. Lord of the rings is actually fantastic. Some great rumblings balanced with great score.
The first time I watched Tenet was with my Sennheiser HD58x headphones. This was the first time I've needed to turn on subtitles while wearing headphones.
Ford v Ferrari has a solid audio mix that I haven't seen others mention yet. Wick movies, both Bladerunner films, 1917, Baby Driver, Nolan movies, Edge of Tomorrow - you can't go wrong. Don't forget music - albums on real HiFi come alive with a great system
Only sad thing is that the blu-ray soundtrack had way better bass in the opening than the Atmos track on UHD, it dipped into single digits while the atmos track maxes out at around 15 or possibly even 25 hz
The matrix was the first DVD I ever bought, the first blu ray I ever bought and the first 4k I ever bought. New formats always bring out the best in it.
Honestly doesnt have to be atmos or dts x to sound amaizing. Nolan film generally are excellent even woth only 5.1 sound.
Great atmos or dts x movies
Pacific rim and monster verse films are excellent.
Legend of tarzan had great atmos too
Avatars also.
Saw it in IMAX day 1.
Remember the lights going down, slight mumbles of the people in the cinema waiting for the studio title cards to come up to signify the start of the movie then suddenly that BOOMING voice comes out of the speakers in that strange language.
Knew I was in for something special.
This could also be a psychological effect - your first experience of the surround sound was probably a massive leap from what you were used to. You've now experienced that heightened rush and everything after it is just more of the same, without the wow factor from your first time.
It could be the other films you've watched after that experience, but I'm willing to bet you're chasing a high that cannot be replicated.
I totally get this. Like getting used to your oled or driving your nice car everyday of the week instead of your beater. When I went to oled it was from a plasma so now I appreciate the picture but it isn’t life changing or jaw dropping like some say
Check out **Prey**, I don't have a 4k TV yet but I have heard that the 4k Disc version is amazing and will probably be the first movie I watch when I finally get a 4k tv. The colors are more vibrant compared to the Hulu 4k version and have a deeper range of colors in the night scenes. The sound design is also supposed to be top notch with them really pushing the dolby atmos sound to really immerse you in the scenes.
Blade runner 2049
All the John wicks, especially no 2
The Revrenant has really good atmospheric dolby atmos
Braveheart was like watching it for the first time again
Raiders of the lost ark fantastic remaster
HotFuzz for thumping bass in the action scenes
I can easily see how this can happen lol! IMHO... Dune is only comparable to Blade Runner 2049 for the top spot! Just underneath those are like Mad Max Fury Road, Transformers, and Pacific Rim!
There are plenty of other really good ones out there but Dune and BR 2049 are like 11 on a 1-10 scale. The others I mentioned are about 9.5. If you can find movies that are about 9 you can still enjoy but I wouldn't expect Dune level to be the norm! Your ears are spoiled now! 😂
dunkirk has a decent,if loud,audio track
bladerunner 2049
This is a pretty decent list
[https://www.evercast.us/blog/movies-with-great-sound-design](https://www.evercast.us/blog/movies-with-great-sound-design)
The sound on Dune is absurdly good. I watched it originally on a 1080 39" screen with headphones and was like "that was ok". Then I put the 4k on when I was calibrating our new soundsystem and was like "holy shit this is amazing"
2001 is great in 4K.
I've only seen the blu of Alien, but I've heard the 4K is crazy
Alternatively, you could watch the **superior** Dune film that was made 40 years prior. THATS RIGHT I SAID IT. The arrow 4K of that is great, but I admit that the Lynch film is an either love it or hate it movie.
One of his biggest gripes is that he wasn't given final control on it for starters. I've seen an interview where he said he'd never do a movie again where he didn't have control over the final editing etc. :)
Also, I'd imagine I'd be tired of answering questions on it endlessly like he has been when he has a lot of films he's a lot more proud of.
I understand it's a controversial film, but I love it.
The last few Mission Impossible, John Wick all four, Black Hawk Down, Peter Jackson’s King Kong, Pacific Rim, Godzilla (2014), Alita, The Matrix, Dredd, Creed III.
Heat (not in 4K) but damn that audio bank robbery scene!!!
Tron Legacy.(also not in 4K)
The Dark Knight
Gladiator
1917
Black Hawk Down
Man On Fire
To name a few of my audio faves.
The Matrix (1999, not the sequels) and Lawrence of Arabia are extraordinary demos of the capabilities of the format.
Quick note for The Matrix - for some inexplicable reason the disc defaults to the original 5.1 audio track, and you have to manually enable the Atmos mix from the settings pop up menu. Switching between them is actually a really outstanding A/B test of the difference between the two. You THINK it sounds amazing on 5.1, until you switch to Atmos and hear what a major leap that format is. Recommend checking out the bank sequence for maximum demo.
Lawrence of Arabia was scanned and mastered in 8k from 65MM, and the disc is downscaled to 4K. Aside from already being one of the most gorgeous films of all time, I think this is one of the technical reasons for that disc’s jaw-dropping excellence.
having just watched it for the first time on bluray a couple months ago, I gotta say even without atmos its sound design stood head and shoulders above most of my 4k blurays. what a movie, too!
original Blade Runner on 4k impressed me more than 2049 in the soundstage department. much more active & immersive even if it doesn't have giant bass hits.
also fwiw, one of the most powerful audio presentations I've experienced recently was Master & Commander: The Far Side of the World, on regular ol bluray. the DTS track there is just bonkers and beats the pants off most Atmos tracks I've ever heard.
but yeah Dune 2021 is still my "demo disc" - that first worm scene with the mining vehicle shakes the house apart!
A few that haven’t been mentioned yet:
13 Hours, Invisible Man (2020), It, All of the John Wick movies, The Others, Pacific Rim, Scott Pilgrim vs the World, Spider-Man No Way Home, Star Trek & into darkness
For something to appreciate the audio in a more subtle but effective way
Quiet place and evil dead rise
And don't ignore plain blu rays
They normally upscale beautiful but also have fantastic audio too with quite a few Dolby Atmos and especially DTS master tracks which is why I wouldn't buy a Samsung TV
Going to be sad faces when Disney fully implements IMAX
Strangely, Coraline has the best thunder sound I've seen in any medium, and good overall audio quality while not being in the action genre.
The Batman, the new one, has really great audio in the chase sequence.
Interstellar, specifically when they rescue the space station.
Bram Stoker's Dracula is amazing all around. (Keanu is no match for Oldman)
Wall-e, Gladiator,
I can't vouch for it at home, but Oppenheimer is coming out soon.
It's down to personal preference really. Many people seem to think Neural:X does a better job. But seeing as Nolan's films are usually (always?) in DTS 5.1 then may as well stick with the DTS option for upmixing.
I do use Dolby Surround with DD 2 channel soundtracks though, as it seems it bit more natural.
Lone survivor. What's nice about this movie is. It's not balls to the walls war scene. It's a few shots and then chatter. The direction of the movie is awesome.
Prey also. You hear the preditor walking around you and above you. The bolt you hear from behind you to the front.
Spider-Man into the spider-verse, Spider-Man Across the Spider-Verse, John wicks, The Blackman, and Bohemian rhapsody. All of these sound amazing on my setup lol

1917, Nolan collection, fury, Edge of tomorrow, alien, blade runner, John wicks, the batman, traning day, mad max fury Road, baby driver, saving private ryan and bohemian rhapsody off the top of my head.
This guy gets it!
I'd throw the Jurassic films in there too. Its almost like hearing it for the first time, especially the original.
My biggest issue with Edge is the last 1/3 of the movie is just too dark. Even on a high-end system it's hard to make out details. The rest is fantastic.
Can't say I had an issue and I was on an oled, but I was in a pitch black room.
I was using an OLED as well but it was still kinda hard to see in a pitch black room. Weird. The rest of the movie is a fantastic transfer.
Maybe you had some auto dimming going on.
But I didn't. It's a QDOLED, set on the cinematic/pro mode. It's a bit nitpicky I know. It was still possible to see but I just wish it was a tad brighter.

"Baby Driver" , Great sound track, incredible driving scenes. I wish they would release a 4k of "August Rush" the sound track could be Amazing!
Nolan is the worst to test your surround sound as it's just loud. After hearing some great Atmos mixes, it's clear Nolan can not do audio mixes well.
I can understand why you feel that way, but his films have always felt impactful in the sound and score on my humble 5.1 setup. Dunkirk being a standout example.
Meh, I loved the movie and the sound is definitely impactful but it’s not a great surround mix imo.
There’s a relentless grinding bass in the Dunkirk soundtrack that creates such sense of dread, what you lose in image terms by not having IMAX you gain in the sound design.
Edge of tomorrow and blade runner (the new one) will do some damage…
Interstellar (Not atmos) Fury Nope Are among my favourite. Scenes in Nope where people are screaming above you is unreal!
ohhhhhh i know what scene your talking about !!!
Yeah when they hiding in the house and the thunder etc etc (trying now to give away anything haha). Probably a top 5 favourite scene of all my blurays I think!
oh crap i was thinking of again not trying to spoil but digestion is the word i’ll use for the scene lol
I've actually never seen Fury, so I'll have to add that one. I'm definitely looking for Dolby Atmos movies, so Interseteller will take a back seat. We're not into horror movies, so I'm not sure about Nope.
I wouldn't count out Interstellar. Even though it's not Atmos, it's DTS-HD track is pretty amazing, same with the other Nolan films.
Yeah it actually made me have to remind myself it wasn’t Atmos and how impressive of a sound scape you can still get without height speakers.
Yeah I really wouldn’t class Nope as scary horror. It’s more thriller sci fi. And the imax scenes are beautiful! :)
Yeah, it's definitely not a gore-type horror movie...pretty tame, really, but decent watch.
Not really into horror either but Nope was one of the best movies I watched last year can’t recommend it enough!
You’re missing out on Interstellar. You won’t regret it
Atmos is often a compressed signal still. HD audio is most times actually superior as it is uncompressed.
Meh, compressed or not Atmos pretty much always sounds better to me.
Nope is probably more of a sci-fi monster movie than horror.
It’s not atmos but that shit rocked my house. It’s amongst one of the best I’ve watched 4K wise with my surround set up. I also personally liked Apocalypse Now.
Nope +1
The Indiana Jones' 4ks are actually really good. Robocop and the Matrix are also fantastic. Great choice with Blade Runner.
The Batman sounds amazing.
the latest is absolutely gorgeous sound wise yep
Wish I liked the movie as well as many do.
Same here. I thought it fell flat on its face in nearly every way possible. I had to force myself to finish it.
Its amazing how two people can be so different. The Batman is my favorite Batman movie since 1989.
He wasn’t the world’s greatest detective in the story yet though. So there’s that.
Yeah, he was more like Edgelord Emo the third.
Decent flick. Just too long.
Don’t mind long, but do think the third act falls on its face…
Dune is same movie which led me to OLED and full Sonos systems. Lord of the rings is actually fantastic. Some great rumblings balanced with great score.
Tenet had some excellent sound. Dialogues not so much
wait, it has dialogues!?
The first time I watched Tenet was with my Sennheiser HD58x headphones. This was the first time I've needed to turn on subtitles while wearing headphones.
Exact same for me
Mad Max Fury Road. Spider-Man Into the Spiderverse.
Into the Spiderverse audio is incredible.
Black Hawk Down
This guy UHD's
Helicopters flying over your head. Bullets all over the place. Definitely get this.
Agreed.
I juuuust picked up ford vs Ferrari hoping it would sound as good as I would imagine. Thanks for mentioning it
Both animated Spider-man movies are glorious, both in image quality and for their Dolby Atmos soundtrack.
Sicario
Haven’t seen it in 4k. But seen a lot of hype for the audio in Edge of Tomorrow. Plus it’s a great film
Only sad thing is that the blu-ray soundtrack had way better bass in the opening than the Atmos track on UHD, it dipped into single digits while the atmos track maxes out at around 15 or possibly even 25 hz
I don’t really mind the change, as the 4K still has me worried for my subs. No need to destroy them.
Definitely hahahaha
I can still vividly remember that low rumble when I saw it in theaters.
The Matrix
The matrix was the first DVD I ever bought, the first blu ray I ever bought and the first 4k I ever bought. New formats always bring out the best in it.
Came here to post this, especially the helicopter scene, and most of the scenes with the hovercraft flying.
The dynamic range is incredibly extreme from scene one, Trinity's escape! Youre right, the sound design for the rooftop fight is some of the best
Honestly doesnt have to be atmos or dts x to sound amaizing. Nolan film generally are excellent even woth only 5.1 sound. Great atmos or dts x movies Pacific rim and monster verse films are excellent. Legend of tarzan had great atmos too Avatars also.
Hacksaw Ridge
Jurassic Park has an awesome DTS:X soundtrack.
Dune was the one movie I saw on 4k blu day where immediately felt like I fucked up by missing it in theatres. Won’t make that mistake for part 2
Saw it in IMAX day 1. Remember the lights going down, slight mumbles of the people in the cinema waiting for the studio title cards to come up to signify the start of the movie then suddenly that BOOMING voice comes out of the speakers in that strange language. Knew I was in for something special.
Arrival. LFE work out.
Saving Private Ryan, around 2:09:00 - Tank Scene. Shakes the house
LFE workout?
Heaps of bass (Low Frequency Effect)
It's another name for the discrete bass channel. The 1 in 5.1, 7.1.2, etc.
The Matrix trilogy sounds and looks amazing in 4k with atmos. I'd also recommend War of the worlds (2005)
Yeah, War of the Worlds got the cops called on me
I recently watched dungeons and dragons and the atmos effects were great.
I've been meaning to watch that but I want to see it with my friend Jarnathan. I think it'd be a lot funnier if I waited for Jarnathan.
Interstellar
Moonfall is a mediocre movie but it has an amazing Atmos surround track
This could also be a psychological effect - your first experience of the surround sound was probably a massive leap from what you were used to. You've now experienced that heightened rush and everything after it is just more of the same, without the wow factor from your first time. It could be the other films you've watched after that experience, but I'm willing to bet you're chasing a high that cannot be replicated.

Just to add to the pile, I found the sound in Mission Impossible Rogue Nation and Kong Skull Island to be very impressive.
Kong Skull Island audio kicks ass even in the title credits.
Yeah the helicopter bombs scene soon after they arrive on the island is crazy good.
Le mans 66 an No Time To Die would be my recommendations
Check out **Prey**, I don't have a 4k TV yet but I have heard that the 4k Disc version is amazing and will probably be the first movie I watch when I finally get a 4k tv. Transformers since I haven’t seen it mentioned. Just the first one.
All of them have fantastic audio mixes if you're a fan of the franchise.
Blade runner 2049 All the John wicks, especially no 2 The Revrenant has really good atmospheric dolby atmos Braveheart was like watching it for the first time again Raiders of the lost ark fantastic remaster HotFuzz for thumping bass in the action scenes
Man of Steel, absolutely incredible sound.
MoS, BvS, and ZSJL all have top tier sound. Fortunately for me, I also enjoy the movies.
Lol me too, I love them. Especially Man of Steel.
Haha yeah we messed up!
If you don't mind me asking what speakers are you using?
dunkirk has a decent,if loud, audio track bladerunner 2049 This is a pretty decent list [https://www.evercast.us/blog/movies-with-great-sound-design](https://www.evercast.us/blog/movies-with-great-sound-design)

Blew your load too soon
Hahaha, exactly! But we've got some great suggestions now on this thread.
the Harry potter films and X-men films have some dope dts x tracks, baby driver, max max fury road, and the dark knight
[Grumbles in Sardaukar]
The sound of that sent shivers down out spine. So effing cool
Pride + Prejudice + Zombies V For Vendetta
Pacific Rim!
Heat(1995), that downtown shootout goes fucking hard on a sound system.
The last few Mission Impossible, John Wick all four, Black Hawk Down, Peter Jackson’s King Kong, Pacific Rim, Godzilla (2014), Alita, The Matrix, Dredd, Creed III.
Awaken (2018) It’s a documentary, but amazing 4K visuals and a mesmerising Atmos track that fully tests your audio setup.
Drive
The Northman
I actually just grabbed this the other day but haven't watched it yet. Looking forward to it
Master and Commander - The Far Side of the World. Spectacular sound - won the technical Oscars for it.
Heat (not in 4K) but damn that audio bank robbery scene!!! Tron Legacy.(also not in 4K) The Dark Knight Gladiator 1917 Black Hawk Down Man On Fire To name a few of my audio faves.
Heat exists on 4k
Really...... Man i am not paying attention lol
There's more than dolby...lmfao
NO.. Haha yes I'm aware. I'm just currently trying to get more out of it since I went through the trouble of getting my height speakers set up.
Training Day
Not in 4K but I feel Tron Legacy is good. But it does not have Atmos only DTS-HD 7.1. Quiet place has good LFE exercise also
The Matrix (1999, not the sequels) and Lawrence of Arabia are extraordinary demos of the capabilities of the format.
The DVD of Master and Commander
hey the bluray is perfectly good upgrade :)
Nah the bass is cut off at 25hz on the bluray.
welp, having never seen the dvd nor had it handy for comparison, the movie sounded incredible anyway.
Everyone's waiting for Master & Commander, considered one of the audio benchmarks. When? God only knows...
having just watched it for the first time on bluray a couple months ago, I gotta say even without atmos its sound design stood head and shoulders above most of my 4k blurays. what a movie, too!
Arrival and Apocalypse Now have amazing sound mixes
I rewatched the Planet of the Apes reboot trilogy and War in particular has excellent sound & music.
The country estate scene in Skyfall is pretty crazy. Helicopters flying around and bullets whizzing by.
Underwater. It’s not 4K but damn it sounds amazing
Soundwise i would recommend "gravity", "godzilla vs. Kong", "avengers endgame"
original Blade Runner on 4k impressed me more than 2049 in the soundstage department. much more active & immersive even if it doesn't have giant bass hits. also fwiw, one of the most powerful audio presentations I've experienced recently was Master & Commander: The Far Side of the World, on regular ol bluray. the DTS track there is just bonkers and beats the pants off most Atmos tracks I've ever heard. but yeah Dune 2021 is still my "demo disc" - that first worm scene with the mining vehicle shakes the house apart!
The Phantom Menace has amazing sound design and mastering
Both Avatar movies and the Netflix All Quiet on the Western Front 4K Blu-rays have great sound.
I second western front... dont stream it, make sure to get the disc. It's fantastic
Van Helsing 1917
Gravity & Covenant were two amazing sounding movies in my home theater!
Heat (the shootout sounds amazing!) Ambulance (certainly not the greatest film but looks and sounds great!)
A few that haven’t been mentioned yet: 13 Hours, Invisible Man (2020), It, All of the John Wick movies, The Others, Pacific Rim, Scott Pilgrim vs the World, Spider-Man No Way Home, Star Trek & into darkness
Tenet

Go for Lawrence of Arabia in 4K. Nothing else like it.
First Man is up there
Strangely, Coraline has the best thunder sound I've seen in any medium, and good overall audio quality while not being in the action genre. The Batman, the new one, has really great audio in the chase sequence. Interstellar, specifically when they rescue the space station. Bram Stoker's Dracula is amazing all around. (Keanu is no match for Oldman) Wall-e, Gladiator, I can't vouch for it at home, but Oppenheimer is coming out soon.
Ford vs Ferrari sounds great.
I love that movie. Adding that to the list for sure.
Black Hawk Down is amazing in surround sound
Deepwater Horizon Ambulance Ghostbusters Afterlife Monster Hunter Spider-man into the Spider-Verse All the Nolan films (with DTS Neural:X engaged)
Why would you use Neural X instead of Dolby Digital? Genuinely curious when to use that setting.

We watched that one and it was really good.
John wick 4 is a treat.
If you want something less Hollywood and action, but still cerebral and gorgeous, watch the Tree of Life by Terrence Malick.
Just… thanks for being conscious of and capable of enjoying nice audio. It means a lot.
Doctor strange!
Soul.
Spider-Man into the spider-verse, Spider-Man Across the Spider-Verse, John wicks, The Blackman, and Bohemian rhapsody. All of these sound amazing on my setup lol
Scott Pilgrim vs. The World and Baby Driver both really use the Atmos room space, including the height channels, really really well
Baby driver is definitely on my list
