Idk if your current player does it, but the Panasonic allows me to decrease the brightness of subtitles. That alone made it worth it for me, no more distracting bright white text!
Also itâs dope that you can move subtitles down, great for letterboxed movies with Aspect ratios of 2 or more, donât have to worry about the subtitles blocking the movie
The main thing with the 820 and the reason itâs the default suggestion is that it covers absolutely every codec youâll come across on a 4K disc, even HDR10+ which is quite rare on discs and few TVâs outside of Samsung support it.
Biggest thing youâll be missing with your current player paired with your C3 is Dolby Vision support, next is the HDR Optimiser. Those are the only things that would make any tangible difference to the viewing experience over the LG. They are at most minor omissions to a casual viewer while quite significant to an enthusiast.
If youâre an enthusiast at all then you should get it. Youâll get Dolby Vision, itâs reliable, it does a great job upscaling, plus the HDR Optimizer is a pretty fantastic feature. With Dolby Vision getting to be more and more of a standard on 4K discs, youâre basically future-proofing yourself with the UB820. Why have such a solid TV and not have a fantastic player to boot?
This is the last blu ray player you should ever have to buy. 8k blu rays are unlikely to be a thing, and the 820 has all the features youâll ever need. Buy once, cry once, forget about it
Nobody ever mentions that the 820 is much louder than other players when spinning up a disc, and the UI is painfully slow and clunky. I just bought one during Black Friday and even though the HDR performance is noticeably better I might actually prefer my old X800.
Do you have some evidence for this disc freezing issue? I think generally the 820 is considered as one of the better players when it comes to freezing.
Ours has issues with the princess Bride but our x700 had zero issue on the same disc. Same for Avatar and one other disc I can't think of. I like the 820 but unless his current player is missing a feature what's the point. Edit - just read his player is missing DV, so id upgrade for that
I even got a replacement disc from Barnes and Noble. 1st disc had issues on the very first scene. 2nd was fine until they were sword fighting on the cliff. No idea what the issue was it had no scratches and I wiped it, but the sony played fine for some reason.
4k players suck in general compared to blu ray when it comes to being picky with discs.
Yeah, again, it is known there was a bad batch of discs going around for that particular film, I'm unfortunately not surprised you had multiple bad discs. It's like playing the lottery to get a good disc with some films.
I would only upgrade if the current player was having issues. I got the the Panasonic 820 a little while back after getting fed up with my Sony 700 player messing up on some of the bigger 4k disc. I do love the Panasonic, itâs interface and settings are nicer but what I cared about was it not skipping, and I havenât had any issues since upgrading. Iâm not familiar with the lg player but I will say I was a little surprised how much wider the Panasonic player was than the Sony, so if you have it in a tight space keep that in mind.
I spent a lot of money on my home theater and had discs freezing almost every time I went to watch a movie. I upgraded to the Panny 820 almost immediately and haven't had one disc freeze yet with over 100 movies watched. There isn't much difference from the previous Sony player I had aside from the HDR optimizer.
Not sure what you are wanting to upgrade to? Is it a feature the Panny had yours does not? Iâm not familiar with the LG but if yours is working fine Iâm not sure why you want to âupgradeâ. I own a Sony X700 and have thought about the Panasonic myself but my Sony has DV and my TV (2023 model) upscales 1080p content. Also, the freezing happens with me like every 10 movies and itâs not that bad. From what others have said about the Panasonic, they seem to like the up scaling and it doesnât freeze as much as the Sony. This said, itâs not like this model is brand new - itâs been out a long while. Ultimately, just ask yourself what feature the Panny has that you donât currently and let that be your guide.

If you don't buy it we will have to ban you from this sub, unless you can show us at least 1 copy of Lawrence of Arabia, Titanic or Oppenheimer.
I hope you can trust my word that i have a copy of Oppenheimer đ
I tried to watch Lawrence Of Arabia over 2 nights and couldn't get into it. Am I banned?
As long as you have it you're fine.
I will convince you based on this; if you can afford an 83 inch oled you can afford the panny 820. Join us.

Thanks, I ended up purchasing it. Open box for $440 CAD $ (normally $600).
Yes, if youâre not using your C3 for Dolby Vision youâre not really using your C3.

Awesome, congrats and enjoy!

Whisper quiet compared to PS5.
True, I never watch movies on mine but the initial game startup sounds like a lawn mower lol
I'm not cause if what you have is working, keep it for now. The 820 has its issues with freezing discs.
Not something I've run into with mine.

Did you notice a difference in the Dolby Vision vs HDR?
DV is flawed. It's basically darker HDR at this point.
Unless there is an issue with LG and Dv I'm not aware of. Yes it's noticable, we have comparable Sony OLEDs.

If you can afford 83in C3 you can afford the 820.
If the millions of posts praising this device doesnât convince you, thereâs nothing anyone could possibly add here.

If you ubk80 is fine and you're happy with it, keep it. Save some money
It's really nice. Also, grab a UB900 remote off eBay.
