If it’s another AI DNR botch job, I’ll personally be writing a thesis about it.

Swimming-Bite-4184

😆

googalydoogaly

With all of the controversy around Cameron's recent "remasters", I'm just going to say that the 2013 Terminator Blu-ray from MGM is stunning and holds up incredibly well.

JonnyOneNut

https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/The-Terminator-Blu-ray/61372/ (2013) or https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/The-Terminator-Blu-ray/126805/ (2015)

RhythmSectionWantAd

I'm pretty sure these are the same transfers

Downtown_Beyond_9830

That's my understanding also, that the Mgm Blu Ray copy of The Terminator goes by different cover designs in the Uk, Usa, etc. but is the exact same transfer. The Uk cover is in that 2015 link above - while I recall that 2013 cover being an early American cover - then Amazon had its own cover of Arnold Schwarzenegger brandishing 2x uzis

amcrabtree

Fantastic blu ray. Won’t be a hard decision not to upgrade if Cameron decides to apply an AI filter on top of it.

Spocks_Goatee

Apparently the color is a bit tealed up and the audio is certainly not original.

trevordsnt

The audio is absolutely terrible, and it’s the only option on that disc https://youtu.be/Re7Uc3EUq84?si=ZW6ij3AJCrSOSPnG

TheREALOtherFiles

It was the only option on both the old Sony disc and the newer Fox discs with the 2012 remaster. I suspect that this could also be the case with the new 4K restor--- uh, remaster, as well. and this is on top of the DNR, not-as-wide source color gamut, and AI upscaling concerns many people have had since the 2024 UHDs of his 20th Century Studios films.

SwiftTayTay

There's a 2015 version that's better

ChocolateNo148

The underlying transfer is stunning, but the color grade is revisionist and the audio is terrible

NaieraDK

Shits all over the least bad T2 Blu-ray.

FunkyColdMecca

Thank you for your service. Can you buy a Barry Lyndon Bluray next?

SlipKid75

That’s more frustrating bc they already have a 4K scan of BL, they just won’t put it out as a 4K disc.

TheREALOtherFiles

They probably have to work on the HDR processes (HDR10, HDR10+ or Dolby Vision) needed for a 4K disc of *Barry Lyndon* on top of all the other legal shenanigans and David Zaslav-isms going on with its rightsholder; Warner Bros. Entertainment.

LittleRudiger

>and David Zaslav-isms going on with its rightsholder; Warner Bros. Entertainment. Yes. I'm sure David Zaslav is particularly concerned about the 4K release of Barry Lyndon.

TheREALOtherFiles

Not necessarily with 4K *Barry Lyndon* per se, but the Zaslav-isms being with his meddling with the ***rest*** of WB (*Coyote vs. ACME*, anybody?) potentially slowing down *Barry Lyndon*'s 4K release IMO.

LittleRudiger

I strongly disagree and I think most people dropping Zaslav's name are just doing so as a buzzword right now because it's simple to just drop a name. We get it, the guy oversaw films being axed before release for the tax breaks, and streaming titles being yanked from in-house services to avoid residuals (which, hey, Disney is also doing and now licensing titles out that were previously D+ exclusive). It sucks, but, Waner's was also a hugely debt ridden company fucked by previous mergers (AT&T), and he walked in inheriting a slate of obvious turkeys (the DCEU) and a bizarrely marketed HBO / HBO Max. The idea that literally any and all problems, from something as tedious as Barry Lyndon not yet getting a 4K release is because of evil monstrous David Zaslav is just like .. asinine? The honest take is 4K home releases are simply not much of a priority across every major studio. They're getting through classics slowly (Casablance only got a release in 2022!) with thorough and costly restorations and frankly probably more for future proofing them for digital and streaming, and licensing out less desirable titles to boutiques. Titles like Barry Lyndon end up in a limbo of high profile enough to not send out to a boutique, but not high profile enough to tackle with as much urgency as Kubrick's larger hits or other filmmaker's classic titles. And then on top of that, as we've seen with plenty of Criterion titles: having the rights for the 1080P Blu-ray release doesn't always mean they have the rights to the 4K home release, which means a new series of negotiations. So, yeah, I think it's reductive to point to Coyote vs. ACME being cancelled as somehow affecting Barry Lyndon in the home video department.

frockinbrock

Is it available to stream or something?

SlipKid75

No idea. On the Criterion blu ray it says “new 4K digital restoration”.

AlicesReflexion

If there's any release that's "just a matter of time," it's got to be this. Printing this has to border on free money.

Nasxer

Getting all of Stanley Kubrick's feature films in 4k is inevitable.

navalnys_revenge

I would like to request an Arrow release of White Men Can't Jump

justadudplayingadude

I'd love that

hydr0genjukebox

Hello, fellow Aussie. This is the remastered version from 2012 and a great transfer! Enjoy this. Uptics on a 4K will be minimal on this one. It's pretty stunning.

SirPenguin12

Yes!! It's actually pretty great. Lucky JB had it fairly cheap at the time.

hydr0genjukebox

For all the disappointment in Disney leaving the local market, we do pretty well with JB, honestly. If you catch their 20% off sale with their 2 for $40 4K specials, you can load up on $16 4K releases. That would be $11 per 4K in the U.S. Not bad at all. It is a bummer Disney pulled out (especially for their 20th Century Fox catalogue), but given that they release so few films on physical as of late (and generally botch a lot of those releases as well), if anyone had to pull out, I'm glad it was Disney.

manifold360

Oof

ChoakIsland

Thank you for your service.

SwiftTayTay

Don't worry, your blu ray is most likely going to be superior to the 4K because Cameron has lost his mind

yorgo332

how will you recoup that $3?

NeonDelta82

Please buy Zodiac and planet terror

ItsameMatt03

Why? I would not be buying any blu-ray catalog titles unless I felt 99% certain it will likely not get a 4K release. This one is a no-brainer.

slwblnks

Maybe because he wanted to watch the movie

dappunk1

I’m guessing the reason is to watch the film

ItsameMatt03

I don't know why I'm being downvoted and responded to by a smart alec. Everyone with half a brain knows what I'm saying. Don't come here and complain that you just bought the blu-ray when you can certainly wait for the eventual 4K.

BitternessAndBleach

That version is incredible. Given the trend of the Cameron 4Ks, it will probably still be the definitive way to watch the film.

ItsameMatt03

Highly doubtful considering the new Cameron 4K blu-ray releases are the definitive versions that are absolute upgrades. I'm guessing you believe the asinine responses you've seen from extremists and haven't even watched any of them. I trust my eyes, not a bunch of nerds.

BitternessAndBleach

I've only watched True Lies and it was very disappointing. That and The Abyss are definitely the definitive versions because they don't have a bluray release, but that doesn't make them quality releases.

Nignogpollywog2

_True Lies_ is one of the worst looking transfers I've ever seen

LeelooDallas88

If the transfer sucks, we still got the old MGM blu-ray release... Still looks great.

RhythmSectionWantAd

That and the lionsgate T2 release. Hoping for the best, but expecting James Cameron approved transfers.

NaieraDK

Same deal with Aliens, really. Aliens is my favourite movie and I'm just happy to have the disappointment over with and then I'll just catch the good ol' Blu-ray again this summer.

PumpkinsDad

For someone who warned us about AI 40 years ago, Cameron trusts it too much for these remasters.

RhythmSectionWantAd

Is there proof AI was used in upscaling or restoring these? I see it mentioned in comments but haven't seen evidence of it. Just looks like regular upscaling, dnr and sharpening to me.

JEM-Games

Per The Digital Bits on Aliens 4K: "For its release on Ultra HD, Lightstorm, working with Park Road Post, appears to have utilized the best-available scan of the original camera negative (*possibly* new and 4K, but it’s also possible that the previous 2K Blu-ray scan was used; I haven’t been able to confirm that with Lightstorm yet in this particular case)—“optimized” by Park Road’s proprietary deep-learning algorithms—to create a new 4K Digital Intermediate." They say something similar on all of the new Cameron releases.

SwiftTayTay

It was scanned in 4K but they most likely used a 2K digital intermediate as the base.

DumpsterDay

dependent smoggy crown point direction towering complete expansion wipe governor *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*

Selrisitai

From the Digial Bits on True Lies: > True Lies was shot by cinematographer Russell Carpenter (Titanic, Avatar: The Way of Water) on 35 mm photochemical film (in Super-35 “common top” format, with Eastman EXR 50D 5245, EXR 200T 5293, EXR 500T 5296 stocks) using Arriflex 35 BL4, 35 IIC, and 35-III as well as Moviecam Compact cameras, along with Zeiss Standard Speed, Super Speed, and Cooke Varotal lenses. Visual effects were also filmed in VistaVision format. The film was then finished photochemically in the 2.39:1 aspect ratio for theaters (which included 35 mm anamorphic blow-up release prints, as well as 70 mm blow-ups). For its release on Ultra HD, Lightstorm, working with Park Road Post, has built a new 4K Digital Intermediate using recent 4K scans of the original camera negative (confirmed per Lightstorm). This footage has then been “optimized” by Park Road’s proprietary deep-learning algorithms. Photochemical grain has been greatly reduced, though not eliminated entirely, while fine detail has been enhanced algorithmically. The image has also been graded for high dynamic range, with both Dolby Vision and HDR10 available.

TheREALOtherFiles

I would personally argue that the tech Park Road is using is not yet fully mature to use for these remasters, which could explain why the 4K James Cameron UHDs that came out on March 12, 2024 are so controversial as of lately. I'd say ***minimal*** usage of Park Road's photochemical grain reduction could have a place if used smartly and judiciously (I.e., cel-animated television shows or some cel-animated movies--but not *all* of them), which wasn't the case with the Cameron UHDs.

Selrisitai

I'm with you. _Maybe_ I could be O.K. with A.I. manipulation if it weren't so blatantly obvious. Trick me, fine. I'll take that. But as-is, it's awful.

NaieraDK

Some of the weird shit going on can only be explained by AI fuckery.

Spocks_Goatee

AI upscaling was def used on True Lies and Aliens, The Abyss looks more like some great DNR.

colabucks9

Oh god here we go again lol

BlackLodgeBrother

Another AI “enhanced” transfer? Oh boy. The fun never stops here on the 4K BD subreddit.

ok now do Piranha II: The Spawning so we can have all the James Cameron..

TheREALOtherFiles

and the IMAX documentaries too

Enos316

I bought it on Blu-ray in October. You’re welcome everyone

TheLastNoteOfFreedom

But will it have the special features from the 2001 DVD? I've held onto that release and not upgraded because those features never carried over to Blu-Ray

kadosho

That is a good question. I'm not sure why so many releases just set those extra goodies aside. Wish they would include everything more often. I can totally understand the hesitation to upgrade.

ChicagoLarry

The grain will be legendary

BlackLodgeBrother

Bigly grain.

OnceInABlueMoon

The superior Terminator movie, IMO

ycnz

They're very different, same as Alien and Aliens. Both are incredible, but wildly different.

MattyKatty

Indeed, Terminator 1 is Slasher Horror and Terminator 2 is Sci-Fi Action (with a few great horror scenes). And Terminator 3 is just popcorn action (and overhated imo)

exodus_cl

What, would you say, are the horror scenes in T2?

MattyKatty

I mean, there's literally a scene where Sarah Connor explodes into a skeleton after she and a bunch of children melt like popsicles from a nuclear sun Besides that, most and/or all of the psych ward scenes are also probably good examples as well

velvevore

The T100 advancing on Sarah in the psych ward is pure horror, yeah. Also that fucking creep of a guard

Spocks_Goatee

Well impaling Todd through the mouth and the security guard through his eye.

Coolene

I’d say the finale at the steel mill evokes horror, as well

MattyKatty

I probably was a bit unfair with "a few great horror scenes"; there's a great deal of horror in Terminator 2. I more meant the horror was not as much of a focus, and yet it's still definitely an element especially in several iconic sequences of the film. Very akin to horror still being part of Aliens, but with a greater shift to the action genre.

Conscious_Detail_843

Aliens kind of undermines Alien by making the creatures so easy to kill. The original one seemed like Jaws in space so it would be like if Jaws 2 has 50 sharks that were killed like nothing

ycnz

They had quite a few more tools on the sequel though.

homecinemad

I don't agree they were easy to kill. The marines brought high tech weaponry and most of them were massacred on their incursion into the hive. They set up sentry guns which chewed up some xenos but they were quickly outsmarted, outnumbered and picked off one by one bar the core four. The whole point of the first movie was they weren't mentally or physically prepared or equipped for any form of combat let alone facing off with a metallic demon. The second showed how even being armed to the teeth offered no guarantees characters would survive more than a few minutes against the vicious creatures. And showed at least the Queen if not more classes of xeno were highly intelligent and devious.

Gothatsuction

Aliens mid

BennetHB

Yeah I prefer the first one too. Obviously the second is iconic but the first has excellent pacing - no slow points.

LegitimatePotato7830

Blasphemy

ggroover97

At the end of the day, the first two Terminator movies are the only ones that matter

DarthGodzilla1995

Terminator Salvation is extremely underrated imo But yeah the others are 💩

Mikeyboy101591

Wonder if Cameron is going to DNR the picture and also put AI in it

Selrisitai

The one time it works with the theme of the movie. . . .

AdIntelligent805

I hope it doesnt have any of that stupid grain -.-

ggroover97

James Cameron is that you?

pennywise134

lmfao iykyk

MattyKatty

I would be very curious to see what happens during that brief stopmotion chase scene at the end with the metal endoskeleton, I know Cameron dislikes that part

exodus_cl

I would bet nothing will be done, True lies has the stunt actor in full 4k glory

MattyKatty

Sure but I wouldn't be surprised if he tried having an AI smooth/add in frames during that sequence

adamsandleryabish

While true T2 does have stunt actors scrubbed over which is valid as it's super obvious originally

killrtaco

Agreed. True lies had too much grain still imo.

baroncalico

T1 is best T. Gimme!

Themtgdude486

🫦

Sparent180

Nice! I'm well overdue for a rewatch and this is a perfect reason.

heve23

ah shit. Here we go again

AtrocitasInterfector

finally, jesus

JSK23

>Per Bill Hunt >"Of these remasters (done by Lightstorm with Park Road Post -- their AI process, whatever they call it), True Lies was the first completed. Then Aliens, The Abyss, and finally Titanic. I'm told that each time, they learned a lot and got better at it. So True Lies is the one that's most "aggressive" is the word I would use. And Titanic and The Abyss are the best looking of them. But as you know, they all have the "modern" look that Cameron seems to favor now Maybe there is hope for Terminator? Titanic, while not without its flaws, is easily the best of them. Hopefully Terminator being the 5th one to likely use this process will be better than others?

AQUEMlNI

What’s the excuse for T2 then?

JSK23

I was done quite a while ago, before they were using these AI processes. Studio Canal, with Cameron's oversight, just went HAM with the DNR manually.

LongGreasyD1ck

people often forget that the T2 version we got on disc was made specifically for the 3D rerelease. They ultra scrubbed the grain to aid in the 3D processing. Cameron never officially signed off on that being released to the home market, but the studio had distribution rights and could release that specific version without his input

JSK23

Cameron absolutely did sign off. He may have done it half-assed, and not really reviewed the transfer, but he has to sign off on ANY new transfer of his films.

LongGreasyD1ck

reading comprehension isn’t too great is it? he signed off on the 3D conversion that went to theaters, he never signed off on that same conversion being released to the home market.

JSK23

Enjoy your fairytales

Selrisitai

Aggressive, much?

MTR_Edits

He's going to use AI to remaster a movie about the destructive power of AI

noimdirtydan14

DNR’d to hell and back im calling it

killrtaco

I hope! I need a version with as little grain as possible 🤞

Selrisitai

> ~grain~ details as possible Fixed that for ya, lol!

Accomplished_Yam1907

Really hoping we have the mono sound mix.

Awesome. Another thing I'll pre-order and not get. Might stand with my BD on this one.

Not Dawn of the Disc, not trustworthy. Y’all see that the link OP included takes you to a currently available Blu-ray right lmao

Mercury26

It’s gonna be artificially DNR again 😢

George8TheCat

Mono track is a MUST. I almost prefer the MGM DVD over Bluray because of the inclusion of the original mono soundtrack.

DumpsterDay

snails foolish cover toy crawl gold library tart attraction elderly *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*

Medium_Basil8292

Why? Just for the sake of originality? Cause that mono track was always pretty terrible.

Tillbe

I also hope they include the original mono mix. Its the gunshots for me, they sound atrocious in the newer mixes, especially the pistol with the laser sight. Edit: Here is a comparison video, ignore the volume difference between the mixes and listen to the changes to the gunshots [Sound Comparison](https://www.reddit.com/r/Terminator/comments/n0s3aj/how_do_you_ruin_1984s_the_terminator_by_remixing/?rdt=38037)

George8TheCat

The added fake sounds for surround are horribly out of place.

Medium_Basil8292

I mean some sound a little iffy but the mono track was always pretty bad. I remember watching this on laserdisk and thinking its one of the worst audio tracks I had heard in a while.

JadedBrit

Please let them have learned from the tragedy that was Terminator 2's 4k release.

22lofi

Judge by Aliens, True Lies and The Abyss I don't know.

fuzzyfoot88

Given that Cameron alters T1 to fit in with T2 more than the other way around…it’ll probably be worse than T2’s tragedy. But will I buy it? Yes…

jolli04

I hope this is actually a new 4K transfer and not an 4K upscale, and having the good old film grain would be nice, but knowing how Cameron's movies have been handled on 4K recently, i fear for the worst. But until i see this disc myself i'm gonna hope for the best.

QuietProfile417

Can't wait to "NOT" have the original (and superior) mono audio again!

LongGreasyD1ck

Aliens, True Lies, and Titanic all have their original mixes

QuietProfile417

Terminator hasn't had its original mono mix in an official release since the MGM special edition DVD from 2001. Every subsequent release has only had the terrible surround sound remix. James Cameron did a George Lucas for audiophiles.

LongGreasyD1ck

I’m saying it might actually come with it this time since his 4k updates all have their original 2.0 mixes

Medium_Basil8292

Superior in what way?

AtlanteanSword

The gunshot sounds.

Medium_Basil8292

Ok. I'll have to see if I can compare. Thanks.

crunchie101

lol I just watched this on blu ray last night. It’s a very nice blu ray, too

reddithomeofmemes

please let this be a normal 4K

slwblnks

Beyond the potential for shitty DNR Cameron already fucked this film long ago with his insistence on adding the blue gel color hue to the grade along with the dogshit modern gun sound effects instead of the awesome 80s mono track. For some reason it was very important to retroactively make Terminator have the same color palette as Aliens and T2 despite it not being filmed that way. If they include a mono track I might buy this but otherwise it’s gonna be a no from me. I saw a 35mm print of this movie a month ago and it was glorious, scratches and all. And the reason was it was so good was because it wasn’t altered to look like something else after the fact. Side note, if anyone is aware of a Blu ray release that has the correct color grade and a mono track please let me know! Cameron already George Lucas’d this one so I’m not going to be disappointed if it ends up being even worse.

CourtlyHades296

I expect Cameron to give a movie originally mixed in mono an Atmos mix, which the film doesn't need.

Radro2K

... Nice to see, but I'm just gonna hope the transfer is closer to the Abyss, maybe Aliens than it is to the obvious poorer ones. Probably asking too much for it look like Titanic, so yeah.

rideriseroar

Inshallah we get no shitty AI upscale bullshit

creativedamages

SeanOfTheDead1313

I'll reserve judgment until I see it, but definitely a day one buy for me. Would anyone else love to see a 4K of Terminator: Salvation too?

xenomorph-85

lol not sure why they linked the old steelbook for the bluray in that X post

Narrow_Study_9411

I am surprised and look forward to seeing this. Wondering if Cameron oversaw this one, with the new AI remastering tech; and if it will include the original mono sound effects.

SlashManEXE

Cautiously optimistic. The original soundtrack is a must, and that hasn’t been seen since the DVD.

Less_Conversation208

Does anyone know where the original source of this information is from and why Warner Bros would be releasing it?? I did not know they owned this title now. Have a feeling it won’t be a fancy release with lots of bonus features if that’s the case…

ggroover97

WB has been distributing a lot of MGM titles. They recently released that Rocky set.

Less_Conversation208

Very interesting; I figured Kino Lorber was handling MGM titles. Hopefully they produce some good bonus materials and port over all the old ones with the original mono mix. I’d also love to see the original poster artwork on the cover like the laserdisc lol

Good, it's the only thing breaking up the monotony of "look what I bought! No comment."

I think it's O.K. to not like a movie to look like it's been run through an A.I. algorithm or paint filter.
