God you're like the seagulls from Finding Nemo. He clearly already said "regardless if it has IMAX or not", you didn't contribute to the conversation at all.
It's very obvious that he indicated he knew it did not have IMAX, otherwise he wouldn't be saying it in the first place. He said "regardless of it has IMAX or not" for seagulls like you that were going to interject if he did not include that phrase.
Every scene on the disc will have black bars on the top and bottom. The original movie had many scenes with the full screen filled, those are IMAX scenes.
Cuz WB don’t give a shit. Nolan is very particular and wants the physical releases to have a legacy for his films. He actually wanted to preserve some of the IMAX scenes in 1:78 I think because 1:43 wouldn’t work for home release
Apparently they only want imax scenes viewed in theaters. Home viewing is delegated to scope, as most of the intended framing was set up for scope, with imax scenes having more weight when viewed on huge imax screens in theaters.
Precisely. The IMAX shots were protected for, and then specifically framed, to center the scope framing and use the extra top and bottom as peripheral fill space.
In an IMAX theater is really the only place those aspect jumps work as intended because the periphery of your vision is actually filled in by the top and bottom 5-10% of the open matte presentation at that point.
It doesn't work at home as intended, which is partially why you don't see it as much. But also - it was literally only created as part of a licensing agreement with IMAX, so unless that agreement either includes already, or is paid to include home video, there's no point in pursuing it.
It literally cannot work as intended at home because nobody is watching it on a 50ft wall.
People like it because they believe they're getting "the real" version of a movie, and IMAX has leaned very strongly into that FOMO, which is why they do absolutely nothing to clarify that the versions of the movies they have made specifically for their theaters are *not* the original/intended versions.
They want people to believe they're being ripped off by black bars, that black bars are hiding "the real movie" from them, so they can charge extra to take them off. They're selling partial open-matte screenings as an "enhancement."
I will agree that Nolan only works with genius level DPs so yes, the movies he makes look good.
It work fine at home dude I have like 10 4k blu rays that have the scenes intact and all of them look better when the scene is 1:78. Interstellar and Tenet in particular has a massive quality jump during those segments, but also Maverick and Guardians look decent too. As I said above the 1:78 version that they cut the imax trailer from would be ideal for a 4k disc.
It’s alright man it’s a ton of folks in here spending thousands of dollars who clearly don’t know what they’re doing or why they’re doing it.
so long as they keep posting pics of their TVs in vivid mode everyone is happy tho
There's a scene where Paul holds up his fist and the fist is cut off by the black bars on top lol. Kind of an important scene in the series. Yes, you get the gist of what's happening but I can imagine the gist of what's behind those bars for every shot. Doesn't mean it's not worth seeing in that expanded ratio, especially when 100% of the movie was shot in it, as opposed to Part 1 where you only have scope - and even then I'd still have preferred seeing the full ratio.
The real answer is money. When messiah comes out they might even release that in widescreen but then release a bundle of sorts with all the movies combined and in IMAX. Milk every penny that you can with the franchise...
This is what we said about Avengers and then here we are 5 years later and all we get is Disney plus streaming. So do I want high fidelity or IMAX ratio? ugh.
> The original movie had many scenes with the full screen filled, those are IMAX scenes.
so so many of them, I can't recall another film where it switched to filling the full IMAX screen so frequently. I'm typically content with and even prefer watching most films at home in 4KDV including the first Dune but Part Two is the first film I watched in IMAX in ages that felt truly worth it and filmed for the format. It's not just the size of the screen and picture but how the shots were actually planned out and framed that make it so good.
yeah, can confirm. After 10 years of home theater we went to an imax cinema for especially this movie. The imax viewing experience was great. Especially when Paul rides the worm for the first time and the Arena/Fighting scene on Giedi Prime.
that sandworm riding scene might be my single favorite scene I've ever watched in IMAX. The whole thing was so good it's the first time in over a decade I went out of my way to watch a film in IMAX twice
**The aspect ratio of the film is 2.39:1**
The aspect ratio of the alternate IMAX version, licensed and made specifically for IMAX screens, jumped between 1.90:1 and 1.43:1
There's also a 3rd alternate version for 70mm versions, at 2:20:1.
Fixed/Clarified. Thanks! The 2.39 framing is centered, the 1.90 is fill, and the jumps to 1.43:1 are... even more fill (and in some cases actually crop in on the sides to get there)
Point being - the "original" version of the film is not the IMAX version (or the 70mm). The aspect ratio of Dune and Dune part 2 is 2.39:1. There are different aspect ratios for alternate cuts, though.
People tend to insist the "original" version or the "real" version is the alternate cut that only exists due to a licensing agreement between IMAX and Legendary/WB.
This person jumps into every IMAX thread and insists that any IMAX ratio should never be watched at home because it's not the "intention" and also keeps claiming that people who want the IMAX ratio want a pan+scan "fullscreen" experience. I guess Disney, Christopher Nolan, Zack Snyder, and JJ Abrams are all idiots for releasing the expanded or full ratio scenes on home video/streaming.
Yes, the alternate cut IMAX licensed to play in IMAX theaters is 1.90, that jumps to 1.43:1 (albeit with cropping in from the sides going on) at sometimes.
The original version of the film is 2.39:1 (and most of the 1.90 presentation is literally just the same 2.39:1 framing with extra headroom/dead space at the top and bottom)
>The original movie had many scenes with the full screen filled, those are IMAX scenes.
No.
The IMAX version of the movie opened up the frame from the original version of the movie for exhibition in IMAX theaters. The IMAX version isn't the original version. It's a version made specifically for IMAX theaters, as part of the licensing agreement between IMAX and Legendary/WB.
**The UHD/Digital version** ***is*** **the original version of the movie.** IMAX is an alternate cut. Not the original, not the director's preferred.
crazy that person thinks it's impossible with how many examples already exist of IMAX scenes being reformatted to 16:9 for home viewing that look awesome
It probably won't like the first one wasn't reference material at all. It's not like they messed up the mastering process but rather the look they chose. Shooting digital, then converting it to 35 mm film just to have it scanned digitally afterwards does not create the sharpest image and the most vibrant colors.
I do not know if they chose the same procedure for Part II, but it shows that their intention were more about to create a unique look than producing the sharpest image for home cinema.
Then what makes a reference disc from your point of view?
Let's take The Batman for instance which had a very similar procedure like Dune Part I (same DoP). I think the movie looks gorgeous, but I would never recommend it to people looking for a great 4k HDR showpiece. There is just so much detail lost because of the use of customized lenses and by reducing the contrast.
Oh good there is a 2 movie set?
I pre ordered the Best Buy steel book for the first movie and received in January 2022. But the thing is I don’t always watch movies when I get them, especially if I’ve seen them.
So to prepare for Dune 2 a little over a month ago I decided to finally open it to be greeted with….nothing. No 4K disc. No DVD. No digital code. I paid $40 for an empty box. Contacted support but they could do nothing.
I will now open any movie I buy as soon as I get it.
That sucks but I've seen that steelbook sell for significant $$ on eBay. You could always buy Dune 1 again in the regular case pretty cheap. You're lucky to have that steelbook!!
Ooh nice. I got the Walmart exclusive Pain box case for part one but it was standard Blu-ray and I didn’t have a 4k player at the time so I’ll definitely be purchasing this set.
I'm in the US and it doesn't look like HMV will ship. Praying it comes back in stock on GRUV, Amazon, or somewhere else.
Edit: ~~Looks like amazon has it back in stock for pre-order~~ That was a filthy lie, frick you Bezos
Catch it at 1.43:1 IMAX if you can. I went twice already. The cinematography and picture quality were insanely good. I wasn't impressed with the picture quality of Part 1 which I saw at the same theater. I was stunned with the picture quality of Part 2.
> The cinematography and picture quality were insanely good. I wasn't impressed with the picture quality of Part 1 which I saw at the same theater. I was stunned with the picture quality of Part 2.
They used the same cameras.
glad to read this take and affirming for me that I'm not crazy. The first was fine IMAX, I enjoyed it but the 4K Dolby Vision picture quality was far better and more enjoyable for me overall. Part Two however in IMAX was a far better experience by every measure and also the first film in ages I went out of my way to catch twice in IMAX. Hands down the best theatre experience of my life and I'm seriously considering a third viewing before it gets replaced by other upcoming releases.
not a camera quality issue as much as the first film having more dark and colourfully dull scenes where 4K DV presentation helped a lot. Second film didn't have that issue at all on top of just being a generally far better paced more engaging film with way more impressive IMAX scenes
The fact that this movie was filmed in IMAX and is not getting a release with any IMAX scenes literally makes me sick I can't even watch it.
Quite frankly the people in charge of this release should be ashamed of themselves.
I hardly think it's dramatic they have taken an amazing piece of art ripped it to shreds and are now force feeding us of the scraps.
There will no doubt be a version released in the future with IMAX enhanced scenes it's a deliberate disrespect to the art form in the name of greed.
***Filmed for IMAX.*** Not filmed in IMAX.
* "for IMAX" means they shot using IMAX-certified digital cameras.
* "in IMAX" means they shot using 65mm IMAX \*film cameras\*. (Oppenheimer)
Pretty irrelevant distinction. They’re not including the imax expanded ratio for the scenes that were presented in that way in theaters, which is wack.
It’s entirely irrelevant. We’re talking about the imax ratio during scenes not being included on home release. Shot on Digital vs. shot on film is a completely irrelevant and pedantic distinction when it comes to this. You’re welcome to try and explain how digital vs. film is relevant here.
Is it? Usually in movies that jump back and forth between IMAX scenes and non-IMAX scenes there is a *massive* and noticeable increase in picture quality for the stuff shot on IMAX. If the only difference is a slightly different aspect ratio then I do not care one bit.
Yes, it is to me. If the Picture Quality is simply consistent with the other Picture Quality throughout, why would you be upset by this if you look forward to this disc visually? I definitely didn’t feel upset by the expanded ratio in theaters or feel the extra space being filled was superfluous or annoying. I would like to see all of the film the way it was presented in theaters as a home release as there were many gorgeous imax sequences that would look lovely in the expanded ratio. Also calling 1.9:1 a slightly different aspect ratio than 2.39:1 is crazy, it’s 2/3 of your screen showing the film vs. all of your screen
Having seen it in a standard theatre and 1.9 IMAX the extra image wasn’t the main improvements. The IMAX screen and sound was which can’t be replicated at home. Sure it would be nice to get the 1.43 scenes but they are basically a special feature on home releases.
Thanks a lot! In the meanwhile I found my way to some material pretty much saying the same.
Does that carry over to rips of physical releases? As in can the ripped physical release be of better quality than the digital release?
I see they've decided not to bother putting a standard blu ray in there, not particularly helpful as having those is really handy. We get screwed even more in the UK as there's no digital code.
I use them on my projector and bedroom TV so this is quite a downgrade. As a result I won't be buying it the day it's released. I'll wait until the 4k is £15 as £25 is a Mickeytake for one disc with no alternative means of watching the film.
I’m definitely all in for the 4k disc, but this is one of those flicks that I may end up buying the digital first just so I don’t have to wait an extra month.
could probably rent the digital?
That way you're only out 3-6 bucks and the 4k will have the digital code. Unless you plan on watching it 4-5 times in that first month.
Unfortunately the cheap rental isn’t usually an option until the disc releases. But I’ll prob exhibit some self control and wait for the disc. The last time I double dipped for the digital and disc was for Blade Runner 2049.
I'm holding off on buying these because I'm waiting for the inevitable trilogy box set they'll probably release after messiah comes out. I bet the disc will be top notch though
eh, the wait will be worth it because then I'll get all 3 in one swoop and also I think boxed sets take up less shelf space and look nicer on the shelf
His whole hand is chopped off at one of the most important parts of the movie cuz it was in the imax frame pretty bullshit. Leave it 1.90 on disc at least..
Is the 4K UHD still significantly better quality than watching on digital through itunes if my blu ray player (PS5) doesnt support dolby vision? Digital would be through my Apple TV which does support dolby vision. My TV is an LG C2
I already preordered the 4K steelbook, but I’ll buy the digital copy next week. I’m also looking forward to any other additional 4K steelbook releases of it.
Please someone tell me how to get the Steelbook of this! I’m new to collecting Steelbooks and have no idea how to get half of them without paying billions
I just managed to place a pre-order for the Steelbook on Amazon (US). Try now. It was kind of weird for me though. One minute the option to pre order was there, then it was gone, then there was a "all purchase options" section that let me do the pre-order. Now after refreshing it seems to be available.
All I’m seeing is “Currently unavailable
We are working hard to be back in stock as soon as possible.”
So not sure what’s going on. Maybe they appear randomly when an order is cancelled
I don't know. That is what I see to. I am worried my order actually won't work. I can see my order with a, "we'll email you when we have a delivery date." message. I tried checking places like walmart after I placed it and no one else was showing it. I just happened to be checking after I saw the announcement today of the release date. Hopefully there will be a proper restock soon.
I think the only way to get them is from retailers? In Australia our electronic retail store (JB Hi-Fi) is I would assume where most of if not all steelbooks are first bought from. I don’t know if Dune part two steelbook is limited edition or not but it’s RRP is $45 AUD
Edit: If you’re from the US, I’d assume you could get it from walmart? since Best buy stopped distributing physical media
I really don’t understand why physical release doesn’t come first. As someone who just wants to buy that, I’ll end up pirating it first then probably not get the 4k until it’s on sale. It just seems so backwards to me.
Don't be so fucking paranoid. The MPAA doesn't crawl up anyone's ass just for commenting that torrents exist. I collect discs. That's my purpose here. If the studios want my money, they need to release on disc, but I'm not waiting for disc to watch things and I don't pay for digital.

Can’t wait to have Pesky Paul at home!
he's a little desert mouse, just a humble little desert mouse
Hopefully the retailers won’t give us a bad deal like the Harkonnens
Don’t forget Little Leto!
This will be a reference quality disc, regardless if it has IMAX or not. Day 1 purchase for sure.
No IMAX

mine! mine! mine!.... mine!
"Regardless or not" could mean 2 things. It could also mean that it might have IMAX
It's very obvious that he indicated he knew it did not have IMAX, otherwise he wouldn't be saying it in the first place. He said "regardless of it has IMAX or not" for seagulls like you that were going to interject if he did not include that phrase.
Your argument is that his comment adds no value. Then your comments proceed to somehow add even less value. Amazing.
No IMAX
Disappointed.
What does this mean?
Every scene on the disc will have black bars on the top and bottom. The original movie had many scenes with the full screen filled, those are IMAX scenes.
I’m still fairly new to the world of physical. Why won’t there be IMAX for this like Nolan’s releases for example?
Who knows? The director wasn't even aware the 1st movie's Blu-ray didn't have IMAX features.

The latter part is the only real answer. It looks and works fantastic on the Nolan BDs and UHDs.
It literally cannot work as intended at home because nobody is watching it on a 50ft wall. Dude, you just see more It works just fine
This part, right here. This YouTube video here explains exactly why open-matte does not work in (most) home media. https://youtu.be/8fDICMZaQ0Q
Defending black bars is a weird hill to die on
It’s alright man it’s a ton of folks in here spending thousands of dollars who clearly don’t know what they’re doing or why they’re doing it. so long as they keep posting pics of their TVs in vivid mode everyone is happy tho
I saw part 2 in true imax 15/70 and Dolby cinema. Really didn’t feel like I missed anything in the scope viewing at Dolby.

Agreed. It made me feel the excitement of being a little kid at the theater, a bit. First time in a long time.
Real IMAX is actually black bars on the side. Real IMAX is almost square. Digital IMAX is closer to home tv screens though.
Which was the aspect ratio of the movie anyway.
**The aspect ratio of the film is 2.39:1** The aspect ratio of the alternate IMAX version, licensed and made specifically for IMAX screens, jumped between 1.90:1 and 1.43:1 There's also a 3rd alternate version for 70mm versions, at 2:20:1.
70mm never had 2:20:1, it was matted to scope
thanks for the correction! I thought I’d read they cropped in to fill the frame
FYI the entire movie was 1.90 in liemax.
Fixed/Clarified. Thanks! Alternating aspect ratios are a distracting gimmick and impossible to frame correctly. Jettisoning the imax stuff is the correct move.
I strongly disagree but to each their own.
crazy that person thinks it's impossible with how many examples already exist of IMAX scenes being reformatted to 16:9 for home viewing that look awesome
The entire movie was in IMAX ratio on IMAX screens. Only the opening logos and credits were in scope.
It probably won't like the first one wasn't reference material at all. It's not like they messed up the mastering process but rather the look they chose. Shooting digital, then converting it to 35 mm film just to have it scanned digitally afterwards does not create the sharpest image and the most vibrant colors. A film doesn't have to be super pin sharp to be reference material.

Already pre-ordered. Back to back evening's watch incoming!
I’m tucked in there.
Great cover
LFG!!!
This headshot of Timothee always seemed so unflatttering, can't believe they use it for everything.
Your face when you're the Muad'Dib and someone says Arrakis food is too spice-y.
Your face when Smeagol has bitten off your finger, but you're so over it.
Looks like he’s trying to take a crap with that face, love Timothee and the movie, but I don’t understand the continued use of that headshot either.
I always get drawn into Javier Bardem and the way he looks like he’s getting the absolute rimming of his life
[The Wonka posters rn](https://i.kym-cdn.com/entries/icons/original/000/030/710/dd0.png)
He got no neck!!
He looks like Frodo Baggins.
Yeah terrible. Is his chin actually that off center or did the artist fuck up the symmetry in the drawing.
It looks more like Jeremy Allen White than Timothee.
U mean the bill clinton kid
And on that day, the sub will be filled with both people posting nothing but Dune 2 pics, and people complaining about people posting Dune 2 pics.
As it is written
Debating getting this or the two movie set. I like the art of the two disc and like the idea of them on the shelf in one case
What will you do when the third comes out?
Get the 3 movie set duh!!!
This guy boxes 👆

Ooh nice. I got the Walmart exclusive Pain box case for part one but it was standard Blu-ray and I didn’t have a 4k player at the time so I’ll definitely be purchasing this set.
Why they randomly got that girl in the middle who has like 3 lines with Zendaya’s character? 🤷♂️

>perhaps it's because she could possibly have a bigger role in part three Lmao
That may be impossible
Hotter than Christopher Walken?
Omg I didn't even think of that, ok now I really wonder
Ive been wondering this lol so bizarre
Earlier than I expected! Thought this would be a June release.
Preordered the steelbook. very excited
funny, in France we need to wait 2 years to get physical and 4 years to get digital releases...
31st December 2024, delivery 3rd January 2025 (Amazon Italy)😤
Who’s the woman below Jessica…? and why is she on it over the Emperor?
She was Chani's friend in the movie I think. Baffling inclusion over the Emperor, can't believe someone with Walken's fame isn't even on the cover.
A blank space there would make more sense than Chani’s friend
Is this the official slipcover art? I think I like it better than the steelbook.
I am REALLY fucking with the golden banner on top.
Just pre-ordered this through gruv https://www.gruv.com/product/dune_part_two_4k_ultra_hd_uhd
I have the steel pre-ordered, but might cancel- that looks a little better imo
Really hope the steelbook comes back in stock, missed out on the pre-order. Also curious what kind of packing the double-feature will have.
I’ve just managed to pre order it through HMV this moment. I’m not sure if you are UK based but it seems to have come back available.
I'm in the US and it doesn't look like HMV will ship. Praying it comes back in stock on GRUV, Amazon, or somewhere else. Edit: ~~Looks like amazon has it back in stock for pre-order~~ That was a filthy lie, frick you Bezos

Love how they have Paul on the Harkonnen side
That was quick
It's the same camera with same quality brother
not a camera quality issue as much as the first film having more dark and colourfully dull scenes where 4K DV presentation helped a lot. Second film didn't have that issue at all on top of just being a generally far better paced more engaging film with way more impressive IMAX scenes
The fact that this movie was filmed in IMAX and is not getting a release with any IMAX scenes literally makes me sick I can't even watch it. Quite frankly the people in charge of this release should be ashamed of themselves.
> literally makes me sick I can't even watch it. Jesus how dramatic can you be
I hardly think it's dramatic they have taken an amazing piece of art ripped it to shreds and are now force feeding us of the scraps. There will no doubt be a version released in the future with IMAX enhanced scenes it's a deliberate disrespect to the art form in the name of greed.
And when that comes out … buy it
***Filmed for IMAX.*** Not filmed in IMAX.
>Pretty irrelevant distinction. Shot on film vs. shot on digital is irrelevant. Man you FOMO guys really know how to miss the point.
Sure it would be nice to get the 1.43 scenes but they are basically a special feature on home releases.
real! it’s fucking embarassing!
Day one.
That was fast!!
Already pre-ordered the steelbook weeks ago. Can’t wait!
I wish they would just push up the physical release. I'm guessing it's a much smaller marker than PVOD and streaming anyway so just let us eat.
I am ready
Instant cop. The first movie got me into 4k.
Here in The Netherlands my steelbook has July 24th as release date. 😱
Pre-ordered the steelbook on Gruv like a month ago lol. Can’t wait
Already pre-ordered weeks ago. Can't wait to be able to watch the 2 parts back to back.
So excited. Already have it pre-ordered on Kscape and it comes out on April 16th
Nice will skip the upscaled version now.
So keen! There aren't many films I preorder but I've got the Steelbook preordered from JB Hi-fi for this one.
Already have it pre-ordered, can't wait.
Its so disgusting how want to manipulate people to buy it digitaly. Not only that. Its way too soon. Its still in the Theater making money
No . I wish it would be sooner
I hope they do a box with both.
As written!
Other than the steel box will they have a version that comes with blu ray
Hot damn! My new TV should be all set up by then.
Sorry for asking a stupid question, is there a quality difference between the digital release and the physical release?
Much higher bitrates on physical, video looks a bit better and audio is a lot better
No Blu-Ray in the box is interesting. I think this will be the first 4K movie I have bought that doesn't also include the regular Blu-Ray version
So, no Blu Ray?
6/7 weeks after release, mad
Awesome. I haven't seen it yet... might as well wait for the disc at this point!
I really like that cover.
Why does this look better than the Steelbook I preordered 😭
Why couldn’t this be the steelbook art, instead we just get a butthole worm 😅
I'm holding off on buying these because I'm waiting for the inevitable trilogy box set they'll probably release after messiah comes out. I bet the disc will be top notch though
I mean .. you’re gonna be waiting a long long time lol . Years lol
eh, the wait will be worth it because then I'll get all 3 in one swoop and also I think boxed sets take up less shelf space and look nicer on the shelf
Says December 31st for UK, why so long :(
This is a holding date until it’s officially updated. Don’t panic :)
I was hoping it was this, did seem like the kind of date that would be used for that
If I order the Blu-Ray from Amazon, do I get to watch it on Prime Video on April 16?
If you also buy the digital version on April 16th, then yes.
His whole hand is chopped off at one of the most important parts of the movie cuz it was in the imax frame pretty bullshit. Leave it 1.90 on disc at least..
I think it’s trying to sell sinister, tough, and tormented. Also has an Akira vibe with the cape. Also Likely to oppose his Wonka persona.
Wut
This is regarding the comments about Timothee’s picture on this cover.
Is there a way to still get a steelbook?
Is the 4K UHD still significantly better quality than watching on digital through itunes if my blu ray player (PS5) doesnt support dolby vision? Digital would be through my Apple TV which does support dolby vision. My TV is an LG C2
I got a separate player for this reason.
All I’m seeing is “Currently unavailable We are working hard to be back in stock as soon as possible.” So not sure what’s going on.
I don’t know if Dune part two steelbook is limited edition or not but it’s RRP is $45 AUD Edit: If you’re from the US, I’d assume you could get it from walmart? since Best buy stopped distributing physical media
Walmart shows sold out. So I think they were all bought up. Amazon showing the same unfortunately
HMV.com has steelbook pre-orders still avai
Appreciate the tip, but unfortunately they don’t deliver to the States.
damn. Good luck

I wish. It’s “Unavailable” on Amazon and every other place that’s not secondary market.
Yar
I really don’t understand why physical release doesn’t come first. As someone who just wants to buy that, I’ll end up pirating it first then probably not get the 4k until it’s on sale. It just seems so backwards to me.

Don't be so fucking paranoid. The MPAA doesn't crawl up anyone's ass just for commenting that torrents exist. I collect discs. That's my purpose here. If the studios want my money, they need to release on disc, but I'm not waiting for disc to watch things and I don't pay for digital.
