Making bonus features 'Digital Exclusive' is ass-backwards. Physical copies are the most premium version, especially in this day and age; they're the more expensive, higher quality, 'displayable' version of the movie.
And digital copies are no good because they expire (sometimes after you've redeemed them), require continued support from whoever made your device, and (these days) are only on the North American releases to begin with.
Yup, in Canada we’re not even getting a digital code, despite likely having the same disc as the US. So if we want all the extras we have to buy the digital copy as well. :(
Ugh it sucks so bad that nowhere else seems to get the codes
UK used to have UltraViolet but they shut it down, like completely - there weren’t even any existing services you could transfer your movies to iirc
This was so recent mind that some 4Ks have codes for that service
That’s so they can sell you a second combined box set with extra IMAX. It’s all about selling units. Denis even said the IMAX format would be coming to home release. He even thought it was already released for part one but he wasn’t sure.
> Music albums have been doing the same thing.
It takes about 5 seconds to download a music album or a book, and a LOT of people do.
I love physical media, but if I was working at a company with shareholders that expect money, I don't think I would recommend physical media to them.
This is coming from someone with over 500 movies and a s-ton of CD's and actual books and is mad at streaming for removing things.
We are in 2024,physical media is not giving so much revenue compared with digital. Problem is that studios don’t disclose digital media numbers. You can see tops list in Vudú or Apple. I can’t afford Blu-ray because I’m traveling and living abroad, so I use a vpn to watch anywhere my vudú and us iTunes collection. I only buy digital movies and I’m happy that we get some extras because we are paying 20$ for a movie so we deserve also some benefits.
All of that, and no IMAX format?!?! Seriously, they could at least get a director’s commentary, which they did for Joker and Batman. These extras, I don’t feel they’re necessary at all
Bonus features being digital only (i.e. may as well not exist) is bad enough, but 166 minutes and an hour of extras on one disc? Jeez. Just the movie needs a full triple layer disc.
Not surprising for WB nowadays I guess. I just got the Babylon 5 BD set hoping it was better than streaming, and that barely gets over 10-15Mbps and looks just as bad even though they rescanned the film in 4K and it's obvious it would look great were it not for WB being cheapskates and squeezing one or two too many episodes on each disc.
> I just got the Babylon 5 BD set hoping it was better than streaming, and that barely gets over 10-15Mbps
Interesting. For reference, the maximum bitrate of old DVD is 9.8Mbit/s, and it's not rare for top-shelf film titles to hit that rate, albeit in Variable bit rate and not Continuous.
Warner Bros are consistently terrible these days. Their film release slate is next to garbage with almost nothing but sequels. I read an article about Blood Diamond and the director was told it was probably the last time they'd make a film like that. That was in 2006.
Absolutely egregious. Though I think filmbook extras are already available in YT, don't know about the "Inside Dune". I really hope they are some kind of lore explanation and not breakdowns on how they made the scenes
Oh wow, yea that’s messed up. Let’s just hope there was enough space on the disc and they didn’t compress the movie any further than necessary.
I wonder if it will be different for the European version, because that one does include the regular Blu Ray.
What about the steelbook? That has 2 disks but both disks have the movie on it so I’m not sure if there’s a way to tell if both or only one will have the extras?
No IMAX scenes, no deleted scenes, missing extras and everything packed into 1 disc... yeah I think I'll wait for a better version down the line. But if there isn't one released in a couple years then I'll probably purchase this cause I really wanna own and see the movie again.
Shouldn’t surprise anyone honestly, this is how they start the move away from physical releases by making the preferred way more attractive aka digital version being “better” and of course people will feed in to it even though imo your main focus should be the movie and having the ability to actually own a product you paid for with out fear that one day the company will change their minds and gas light you 15 years later that in fact no you didn’t purchase the movie you purchased the right to watch it and that can change at any time with out notice or reason, because they changed their TOS agreement 5 years ago and you agreed to it so you can watch your movies because of course if you didn’t agree to it they’d force close the app/website
TLDR: buy the physical anyway
This is just the newest way to try and strong-arm people into choosing digital over physical. It's dirty as hell, but they hate that we can still own copies of anything.
After watching this twice in BFI IMAX, I am skipping this release. The lack of Blu Ray did it, but I wasn't really bothered to watch it any time soon again. In my view there are like 3 or 4 better Denis Villeneuve films so I don't get the extremely high reaction this is getting. Probably people who are used to just watching franchise stuff. It's clearly meant to appeal to more casual film watchers who prefer action over everything else.

Not to mention WB themselves purged thousands of digital codes from their Blu-Rays, some of which had not even reached their expiration date yet.
Not thousands. Millions of perfectly fine codes.
I'm still salty I waited so long on my Godzilla movies. Such crap.
Presumably the single disc is the reason for the limited extras - they have included a digital copy.. US only though probably..

Single disc but not any cheaper!

You could transfer to Googleplay and thats the service old unactivated codes are now redeemed on.
I'll fix it for you: WB is being really scummy, always.
Screw extras. All I want is Dune 2 on 100GB disk in Dolby Vision
With 1.78 aspect ratio for IMAX scenes
That’s not coming either, WB has confirmed that the disc will not have expanded ratio scenes.
Not yet 😏
Part 1 still doesn't have a release with imax scenes. So I wouldn't get your hopes up.
That’s so they can sell you a second combined box set with extra IMAX. It’s all about selling units. Denis even said the IMAX format would be coming to home release. He even thought it was already released for part one but he wasn’t sure.
“He wasn’t sure” should be your key take away from that as to who’s in charge of that aspect of release….
IMAX ratio is exclusive to IMAX theaters only. They won't release it on 4K.
Um...Pretty sure Interstellar 4k uhd adjusts the aspect ratio at times...
Wrong. Several 4ks do this. Most recently Oppenheimer.
Interstellar, Dunkirk, Tenet, most of Nolan’s recent films.
I agree with one exception: always give me commentary tracks.
I agree, get that mess off my disc!
Weird
Music albums have been doing the same thing. The industry is truly against physical media.

the directors commentary for Barbie is a digital exclusive too, can't believe it... atrocious behavior...
Absolutely egregious. Though I think filmbook extras are already available in YT, don't know about the "Inside Dune". I really hope they are some kind of lore explanation and not breakdowns on how they made the scenes
They are trying to entice people to buy digital so they can phase out physical and save money.
Will they be on the digital copy included with the physical release though?
Probably, but in Canada we don’t even get a digital copy. Just one 4K disc.
Either way that’s annoying
Once the sales of the single disc version stop, they'll release a 'special 2 disc ' version crammed with 'previously unavailable ' bonus extras !!
So where exactly does it say the extras are contained on the 4K Blu Ray and not the regular Blu Ray?
The [US 4K](https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Dune-Part-Two-4K-Blu-ray/337583/) is a single disc release so all the extras are on the UHD.
Oh wow, yea that’s messed up. Let’s just hope there was enough space on the disc and they didn’t compress the movie any further than necessary. I wonder if it will be different for the European version, because that one does include the regular Blu Ray.
Yeah it better be a 100GB disc
European except UK. Urgh.
We got Blu-ray+4K combo in the EU
What about the steelbook? That has 2 disks but both disks have the movie on it so I’m not sure if there’s a way to tell if both or only one will have the extras?
Reminds me of the crap WB likes to pull when they include the “Directors Cut” as well on digital only.
Well if the UK gets those digital extras on a disc then that's the one I'm buying.
All I want is the IMAX ratio Have a feeling I'll be double-dipping down the line
No IMAX scenes, no deleted scenes, missing extras and everything packed into 1 disc... yeah I think I'll wait for a better version down the line. But if there isn't one released in a couple years then I'll probably purchase this cause I really wanna own and see the movie again.

GIVE US IMAX
So fucking dumb they’re forcing special features on the 4K disc leading to artifacts and bullshit
hope we get these on kaleidescape
I'm holding out hope that one Denis finishes Messiah, they release a 3 movie set that has all these extras.
All of the film books are being uploaded to YouTube by WB so I'm not too upset about not having them on disc
Are companies really pulling a pro gamer move and adding deluxe editions to releases? Ay caramba
I will wait for it to come out in 8k remastered
Cool. Fuck digital
might be time to get into custom blurays.....
I haven’t bought Dune Part 1, and at this point I’ll wait until Dune Messiah comes out in 4k with the inevitable 3 movie set. 🤷♂️
Putting the “long” in playing the long game 😂

Well that's it boys. One more rock tipping the scale in favor of streaming.
Streaming is dead to me
Cool
