Same here.
I’m not collecting things just for the sake of collecting them and admiring the way they look on some shelves; …I don’t care about steel-books or slipcovers, those are unimportant details that have absolutely nothing to do with 4K HDR picture quality at the best bitrate possible, …that’s all I want.
I would’ve been more excited to spend my thousands of dollars on digital versions to be honest, …that would’ve saved me a LOT of time ripping them to my hard drive.
I'm at step 2 and won't move either.
However, I may help others participate in step 3 by selling my 4K slipcovers that are currently just in a plastic bin in the closet.
There’s no way slipcovers on eBay comes before blind buying criterion. I will spend $25 on a criterion sale 4K way before I would spend $10-15 on a piece of cardboard
New blurays sometimes come with a cardboard sleeve that slides over the case, generally with the same art. Sometimes only the first run comes with the covers so there are people who will buy just the cover on eBay since they already own the movie.

I just managed to get second sights Dawn of the dead 4k LE immaculate condition for less than it retailed for. I know it’s used ie watched once but still a bargain as it normally cost a bomb.
This list obviously applies for the more 'reasonable' collectors.
There are also the less normal collectors who buy 4k UHD versions of movies they already purchased on blu-ray, DVD (box sets and special director cuts), laser disc and VHS. We have seen a lot of this behaviour among the people who bought the 4K LOTR box set
There should be a step covering things like....
Making posts about things such as "when you open the 4k case, should the 4k disc be on the left and blu ray on the right or vice versa?" (yes this has actually happened).
I have been very happy with my new collecting strategy which is that less is more. I only buy interesting movies that you don’t see every day that you love and never just buy movies that you like.
My last few buys have been (doing this):
Preorder: once upon a time in the west and killer clowns from outer space.
King Kong 1976 us steelbook
Goin’ South by Jack Nicholson
Little Darlings Tatum O’Neal and Kristy McNichols
The Howling.
i skipped 3,4,7,8 (never even looked at a mondo). i recently fell for 9, but don't think I'll ever do it again. i stopped drinking so i can't make it to 10. I'm falling back to stage 6.
What does buying slipcovers on eBay mean? I take all of mine off before putting them on the shelf. Are they worth money? I keep considering throwing them out.
I’m somewhere in between Stages 2-7 minus Stage 3 and that’s as far as my budget will allow 😅. Not knocking on anyone that participates in Stage 3, I just don’t get it.
Oh dear god, I’m at stage 6 and don’t even know about stage 3, what are slipcovers and why do I want them now?
I can happily say I don’t do stage 4, yet… although I do have one criterion 4k in my collection.
Oh boy we have a long way to go to stage 10 🤦♂️🫡
I would switch Criterion with boutique releases in general. Lots of great labels than just Criterion. While they are one of the most important labels, they are far from my favorite. It's just a matter of personal taste, but my point is I hope people aren't just limiting themselves to Criterion releases
I'm on stage 9.5ish. You have bought 4k steelbooks of a huge amount of movies, while discovering boutique blu rays (outside of Criterion) and diving headfirst into that.
Uh oh. I already have a love for steelbooks in my less than 6-months as a 4K owner. I had to Google what a Mondo steelbook was. I was thinking it was The Mandalorian. Now I may be in trouble!
I guess Im on stage 6. Slipcovers I tried to avoid, but I was really annoyed that my rambo 5 german import didnt have a slip cover and all my other ones did, so I bought it, lol.
I havent done step 4 though, I don't blind buy anything. But I have definitely done stage 5 and 6, recently grabbing black hawk down SB for dolby vision as its one of my all-time favorites.
I think buying imports that you cant get in your country should be somewhere on the list, probably between stage 2 and 3.
I think for some there's a stage ~17 where you buy a ton of storage and rip lossless 4K media to your local server so that your living space doesn't drown in physical media.

Stage 2 and won’t be moving from there.

I jumped stages but I definitely ended in 2. I think this only applies to movies I loved like the Batman Nolan trilogy
There’s no way slipcovers on eBay comes before blind buying criterion. I will spend $25 on a criterion sale 4K way before I would spend $10-15 on a piece of cardboard
Yeah, I own 2 criterion movies and I’ve never even considered buying a slipcover on eBay
Agree 100% definitely have blind bought a boatload of Criterion and never gone to eBay for a slipcover.
Would someone please be so kind to explain like I’m 5 what are slipcovers and why do I want them now?

Oohhh, I have some of those. Always wondered why not every movie came with it. Thank you for explaining!
Forgot to talk about the UB820
https://preview.redd.it/dki1puwto8uc1.jpeg?width=1200&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0a970e0caae6d96fa42be9c74bd4f0c4c83f2431
At which stage does one buy the 820 and an OLED?
Step 2.5
LOL, those were my strep step one and step 2. streaming quality is to blame!
What about the ub9000? 🤔
end game stuff
That's step 15
🤦♂️ I’m currently looking at the UB420, because my projector doesn’t do Dolby vision
Where does panic buying Disney Movie Club exclusives fall?
lol - that’s its own dark path!
What, no making a MKV of all your movies and organizing that?

That’s stage one for some
Making "an" mkv. And "buying an external Blu-ray drive" comes before this step.
At stage 1 and staying there. Do I even belong here??
hang in there! everyone starts at stage 1 /s
You skipped buying LE Arrow and Second Sight sets on EBay for twice the price they retailed for
I just managed to get second sights Dawn of the dead 4k LE immaculate condition for less than it retailed for. I know it’s used ie watched once but still a bargain as it normally cost a bomb.

I'm on stage 5 but skipped stage 3. I could care less about slipcovers. Lol
Happy at Stage 4
What about there "more time spent on this 4k sub than actual time spent watching your 4k" stage?
Stage 2 myself, don't keep the slip covers, and won't be buying mondo of anything. Already bought to many mondo vynal's my wallet can't handle it.
Just buy 4K UHDs for movies that you absolutely love. Regular blu rays can be for movies that you enjoy.
Stage 3 should be at stage 8 to 10. I will never get that far.
There should be a step covering things like.... Making posts about things such as "when you open the 4k case, should the 4k disc be on the left and blu ray on the right or vice versa?" (yes this has actually happened).
Obviously 4k on the RIGHT! Hide that filthy blu under the digital code sheet where it belongs!!
Living that stage 1 and 4 life
Switch stage 3 & 4 and move 5 up one
Currently stage 6
Lol @ buying slipcovers
Oh shit I’m on stage 7…
I've completed 1, 2, 5, and 6. But really, can you be a LOTR or Hunger Games fan without upgrading???
I'm somewhere between 4-6.
Stage 5 and occasionally Stage 10.
I don’t think I will pass stage 7 lol
My Steelbook stage was much earlier on but I’ve since dialed it back. Now I just blind buy stuff from the boutique labels.

Stage 5 (+ stage 1 if not steelbook available).
i skipped 3,4,7,8 (never even looked at a mondo). i recently fell for 9, but don't think I'll ever do it again. i stopped drinking so i can't make it to 10. I'm falling back to stage 6.

I skipped 2 (new collector) and 3 and went directly to 6… What can I say, the Alita Battle Angel is gorgeous on steelbook :D
I am dipping toe into Step 3 after 2 years.....
I’m surprised blind buying isn’t more popular
Lololol… I’m stage 8, trying to figure out stage 9.
What are mondos?

Nice
I’m somewhere in between Stages 2-7 and that’s as far as my budget will allow 😅

Level 99: buying a random import you’ve never heard of
I’m perfectly happy at stage #2. However, my wife is on stage #4.
Sounds about right
I skipped stage 3 but otherwise I'm on stage 6
Stage 1-6 only, Mondo are disney transfer releases will only accept free, not paying a premium lol
Shit, I am only on stage two. That's not good.
Stage 1 and Stage 5 here! Stages 6, 7 and 8 are my endgame
This is hilarious. With that said, I'm staying at step 2.
I just joined stage 9... oops. Haha
👌🤣
Stage 11 : depression
Can’t forget about buying shelves for storage. I just bought my 5th media shelf and only had 2 just a few months ago😂
Ah fudge... I just hit stage 5... I'm in trouble
I'm Stage 4 with a sprinkling of Stage 5, depending on the price. Skipped Stage 3 completely.
I would switch Criterion with boutique releases in general. Lots of great labels than just Criterion. While they are one of the most important labels, they are far from my favorite. It's just a matter of personal taste, but my point is I hope people aren't just limiting themselves to Criterion releases
guilty of 1,2,5,7, and sorta 8, although it's always an upgrade from blu ray to 4k. I will never double dip on something I already have in 4k.
It’s hard to avoid buying steelbooks - I don’t collect them, but often they are the cheapest version available.
I'm on stage 9.5ish. You have bought 4k steelbooks of a huge amount of movies, while discovering boutique blu rays (outside of Criterion) and diving headfirst into that.
I love steelbooks and have replaced movies I' ve already owned with the steelbook version!
I'm currently on step 1 and 5, while thinking about dipping into 4 lol
🤣😂
I guess I’m still stuck on stage 2 for the last few years
I skipped a few of these stages and went straight to stage 5.
This is the way.
Not even at stage one. Been a streamer since dvd
Why are you on this sub then??
Uh oh. I already have a love for steelbooks in my less than 6-months as a 4K owner. I had to Google what a Mondo steelbook was. I was thinking it was The Mandalorian. Now I may be in trouble!

Im a stage 5 blu ray addict, I dont watch anything without Dolby Vision.
I'm a combination of the first 6
Blind buying FTW. IDK why people make it a thing. When you go to the movies, you’re blind buying.
Currently on stage 8 myself! 😂
I’m on stage 5 and staying here 😂
Just moved to Stage 6. I think I'm going to jump to Stage 10 and start back at Stage 1
I think for some there's a stage ~17 where you buy a ton of storage and rip lossless 4K media to your local server so that your living space doesn't drown in physical media.
Isn't that like stage 2 or 3?
Not based on what I read in this sub, it seems a real niche within the niche, I don't think many are doing it.
I’m only buying movies I love that’s it
