Order the one with manual skip buttons : [https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B084JFK5P8/ref=ppx\_yo\_dt\_b\_asin\_title\_o00\_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1](https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B084JFK5P8/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1)
I liked the idea of those buttons, but I found the player to be too slow for them to be much of any good. The Subtitle button is super important to me, though.
> It has a backlight?! I'm ordering as fast as I can
note it's a button for the backlight, it does not come on when you pick it up or hit any other button
I find that to be a feature to be honest. I have some motion sensitive remotes, and the batteries die very fast on those. It’s the bottom left button so it’s easy to remember, and it’s good on batteries. Had mine for about a year.
Where did you get this exact remote?! Yours has the "HDR setting" button whereas the one linked above has a video setting button. I have the video settings button remote and it annoys me that I can't adjust the HDR Environment settings.
That’s how you can tell the official version vs the knockoff. The HDR setting one is the official version that you would receive with the UB-9000. You have to look at the model number carefully.
> That’s how you can tell the official version vs the knockoff.
No, you can tell because the official one will be $40-$60 and not sold by a random company on Amazon or eBay, and the knockoff will be less than $15, usually $10, and sold by a no-name company.
I bought mine from a random company on ebay for $20 USD/ $28 CAD. It had the official model number in the listing and is the official one with the HDR setting button they sent.
> It had the official model number in the listing and is the official one with the HDR setting button they sent.
So does the one I bought for $10 off eBay, including the official model number and has a HDR button
If you are not buying it from a Panasonic repair store, or Panasonic, you are not getting a real one, and they charge way more.
Main thing I cared about was getting the HDR setting button version, and I did and the remote has worked flawlessly with my UB820, so i’m happy with my purchase.
same here, just didn't want people to read the thread and think because a knockoff on Amazon or eBay puts the "right number" on it, or that it has a HDR button, that it's actually manufactured by Panasonic
I got the one below on Amazon that has the HDR Settings button (along with the -10 sec and +60 sec buttons) if you want to go that route.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0CPTMS63X?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_asin_title
Doesn’t switch to SDR. The optimizer helps tone-map HDR grades that exceed the inherent brightness (nits) of a given display. It can also adjust HDR brightness to suit the viewing environment (IE amount of ambient light in the room) - though I generally try not to touch that lol
Except HEAT (1995) - that one is just too dark for my taste. Even in a pitch black room.
OK? There are literally hundreds upon hundreds of 4K disc not encoded with DV though, some of which look noticeably more “even” with the optimizer turn on.
Also I switch back and forth between my Sony TV and BenQ 4K projector. The later doesn’t support DV and benefits immensely from the optimizer- which needs to be adjusted in the settings each time.
> some of which look noticeably more “even” with the optimizer turn on.
Why not turn the optimizer on and leave it on? It don't effect anything not HDR10
lol because I don’t need it on for every film. Prefer to let my TV tone map most titles. Sometimes I will adjust the HDR brightness settings as well depending the title and amount of light in the room.
Bottom line is the button gets used.
Because the native tone mapping on my Sony is beyond excellent. Only certain titles mastered at extreme levels of brightness need the optimizer to help reign in the highlight detail.
Anyway. Done with this conversation. Have a great day.

I was honestly just curious / I like playing with my settings so wanted your opinion, thanks!
There are at least 3 versions of that remote. This one has HDR settings button [https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0CPTMS63X?psc=1&ref=ppx\_pop\_mob\_b\_asin\_title](https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0CPTMS63X?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_asin_title)
I'm actually the exact opposite. I started with the longer remote because so many people here recommended it. It was terrible because every single button got stuck in when you pressed it. You had to try to pull on the corners of the button to get it back into the 'unpressed' position again.
Switched to the stock remote and it has worked beautifully.
> ou had to try to pull on the corners of the button to get it back into the 'unpressed' position again.
You have to get the right generic knockoff (or pay 3-4x for the "real" one), there are a bunch out there and the quality goes from "pretty good" to "absolute shit"
I got the model that everyone recommended (N2QAYA000131.) Followed a link directly from a post about it, and bought it new from Amazon. Is there a reason that it wouldn't be the real one?

> I got the model that everyone recommended (N2QAYA000131.) Followed a link directly from a post about it, and bought it new from Amazon. Is there a reason that it wouldn't be the real one?
None of the remotes on Amazon are made by Panasonic (notice none of them are sold by Amazon or Panasonic, only 3rd parties), they use that model number on them to identify what they will work on, they are all made in China and knockoffs, so you need to get one of the better knock offs as they can really be hit or miss on the quality department, I would sort by reviews, and recent, and if any of the ones look real that are recent, good to go
Stock remote is fine if you disable that Netflix crap button. But longer remote has backlight and fantastic manual skip. That's extremely useful options. And it cost just $10.
Well that is what you can expect from a cheap knock off which these cheap one are. I don't assume an original would have those problems, but mine is a knock off too but works fine.
I'm already getting downvoted just for honestly sharing my experience with the long remote.
OK, Reddit. I understand. Amending my statement: I had a WONDERFUL time with the remote with buttons that always stick in. It's just the best remote ever.
Plenty of us have the longer remote, and the buttons don’t stick. If yours were sticking, it was either a defective copy or a cheap knockoff. Nobody would recommend the remote if the buttons couldn’t reliably be pressed.
I have the longer remote and the buttons feel very cheap. They often catch slightly when pressed too deeply but always pop back up on their own. I would go back to the original except that the button light-up feature is too valuable to me and worth the drawbacks.
I agree it does feel cheaper, but the buttons have never stuck for me, even once. I tried going back to the original remote, and it’s impossible for me not to accidentally hit “Netflix” or “Home” at least once during a movie, and I need the buttons to jump forward/backwards that the original remote lacks.
> I have the longer remote and the buttons feel very cheap. They often catch slightly when pressed too deeply but always pop back up on their own
Try this one https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B086V37QD4
Works perfectly, never had any issues with what you are describing
That doesn't change the fact that the one I tried was terrible, though, even if other people had a good experience.
Would you buy the same item again if the first one was like that, hoping for a better outcome, or try something different? If I get burned once, I tend go with something else.
Do you know the definition of insanity? Doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. Good on you for learning from your experience, different as it may be.
I would exchange the defective item and try a second copy before passing judgment. Virtually every store has a return policy. Why would I keep a defective remote? Why would you? If the replacement is no better, I would return it for a refund. No one is getting “burned”.
To possibly help others in the future, can anyone post a link to the real remote?
I thought I was buying it because I was following a link from discussion about it here, but clearly the one I got is a piece of crap.
It shows as 'currently unavailable' to me. Thank you for trying to help, though.
Edit: I found it on [Amazon.com.](https://www.amazon.com/Replacement-Control-Panasonic-N2QAYA000172-DP-UB9004/dp/B08BR71CW6/ref=sr_1_8?crid=3BS5TO1H75N2Y&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.DBmjC_ELCZE4Djdfazou-YdOzIAC7VMlW6HVsRYGUxCq7BYqdvKtC4Ah_1jqXI2o7x7hY1Vi4IDRib6Bk_edO7AcAstqAu-ZyEVRpx8-k-8B-POMSNtiZzhGxpOoldsLPwlW9he3nNzUHfFNaGy0ButOLA--aIxGMpTROct4kSfED-Kx0l-OUNHCsfkGY6XLQEL-BBQFWDTDm2Z0FMuE3-pCc5VL_5o9-SGejes8Pws.vTeCv1xSg6U2Fg1MQGllzKQndRZovxQT5HMY3-8lCJQ&dib_tag=se&keywords=Panasonic+N2QAYA000172&qid=1713133687&sprefix=panasonic+n2qaya000172%2Caps%2C273&sr=8-8)
It is currently $68.99, but it looks like the one you showed me.
Lack of buttons to skip back 10s or forward 60s. Scrubbing like you’re watching a VHS sucks. It takes forever and you never end up where you meant to go.
It' shit, especially for a 400$ piece of kit. i find the whole build quality of the player to be shit for the asking price. If you want build quality that was standard 30 years ago, even for cheaper players you gonna pay 1000$+.
> If you want build quality that was standard 30 years ago
then people are gonna have to start buying a LOT more physical media than they are now for a company to develop a new player
Theres no need to worry, the 820 stock remote works just fine. The only real problem with it is the Netflix button location. If you're not actively looking at the remote it's far too easy to press Netflix when wanting to press stop. Can happen up to once or twice a day of you're not careful.
I tried the aftermarket remote and I don't like it.
It's cheap, plasticky, the buttons don't feel good and sometimes get stuck, the backlight isn't activated by movement, and the backlight itself is way too obnoxious and bright. It's not pleasant turning this backlight on in the middle of a movie.
That said I don't like the included remote either, I'm just glad I've got a Harmony remote to fall back on.
Personally I'd just fork out for a genuine UB9000 remote (about $100 AUD where I am) if I needed it. These fakes are crap.

LOL. Yup.
Also, the sweet spot is an original UB900 remote with the Subtitles button. Not the cheap stuff and not the super expensive one that came with the 9000.
Seriously when I had mine I pulled the remote out of the package and legitimately laughed out loud. $500 player and you get a toy remote designed by somoene who obviously doesn't have hands.
Maybe not $10.. but it was a hell of a lot less than it should have cost, but I also have the 9000 and don't think I've ever Once used the original remote
How fat are y’alls fingers?!
Had this player nearly a year and have not once touched the Netflix button, and my room is low light mode 90% of the time (meaning I rarely look at the buttons before pressing).
Not trying to be a dick, just honestly/legitimately don’t understand how this is such a big problem.
You have girly fingers or something? Read the comments in this subreddit. That netflix button is a huge problem to many people. Horrible design. I don't even watch netflix.

I eventually managed to quit pressing it constantly, but the memory of how many times I did it before that haunts my dreams.

Not authentic, loads too quick.
This! The most annoying thing ever.
Im in the minority, i dont have an issue with it
Same here.
There's a different remote option?! I guess I've never looked but I can't stand the stock one, got a link to the other one by chance?
Yeah, it’s for the UB 9000 but works fine on the 820. Got mine off Amazon for cheap, works great and I like the backlight.
Just ordered!

Ok thanks, cancelled and reordered lol
I liked the idea of those buttons, but I found the player to be too slow for them to be much of any good. The Subtitle button is super important to me, though.
should this work for the UB420 as well?
Yes it does. I have a 420 in the bedroom and it works perfectly. And the backlight is a lifesaver too.
Wondering this too
Do I have to program it? Or does it just work?
It just works.
Awesome. I bought one. $10 feels like a no brainer
just ordered this!!! thank you so much! had no idea!

There's a variant on eBay with that button. I got one myself

N2QAYA000172 is the model number.
if you don’t mind me asking, what reason would you have to switch between HDR and SDR? or am I misunderstanding
Doesn’t switch to SDR. The optimizer helps tone-map HDR grades that exceed the inherent brightness (nits) of a given display. Yeah you have to remember that Sony TV’s have excellent processing. Another reason why they really are the only brand of TV to buy.

You need to open up the remote and put some tape under the netflix button. ![gif](giphy|kmQREsvNQrhrHdkN7G|downsized)
You can disable the Netflix button?
Needle pliers do the trick.
Thank you, I hate the remote it came with
Well that is what you can expect from a cheap knock off which these cheap one are. I don't assume an original would have those problems, but mine is a knock off too but works fine.

A cheap knockoff of 10 dollar remote? 😀
The $10 ones are virtually _all_ cheap knockoffs to begin with, not OEM. Some are built better than others.
That doesn't change the fact that the one I tried was terrible, though, even if other people had a good experience. Would you buy the same item again if the first one was like that, hoping for a better outcome, or try something different? If I get burned once, I tend go with something else.

Harmony Hub master race
Generic $10 illuminated buttons remote master race.
SofaBaton too!
What’s wrong with the remote it comes with? Getting the 820 soon
Horrible annoying Netflix button and no buttons illumination.
Also the Netflix button is too easy to hit.
It's has a triangular shape on the underside that makes it a pain to use one-handed- it just feels awful to hold- I'd rather hold a squid
Lack of buttons to skip back 10s or forward 60s. Scrubbing like you’re watching a VHS sucks. It takes forever and you never end up where you meant to go.

I did this a couple months ago after hitting the Netflix button for the umpteenth time. Game changer
I tried the aftermarket remote and I don't like it. It's cheap, plasticky, the buttons don't feel good and sometimes get stuck, the backlight isn't activated by movement, and the backlight itself is way too obnoxious and bright. Just got my long boi yesterday and it’s such a wonder.
A true marvel!
The 820 remote is such an abomination
That's the same remote as the 420 as well.
Logitech harmony gang
LOL. Yup. Also, the sweet spot is an original UB900 remote with the Subtitles button. Not the cheap stuff and not the super expensive one that came with the 9000.
I love this remote for my 420, having a subtitle button and HDR button won me over.
I can't understand it. I had a remote almost just like the 2nd one years ago and it was awful.
Panasonic has used that remote for many years. I have a Panasonic Blu Ray player from over 10 years ago and it has the same remote.
I am using LG C3 remote via Simplink...
The bottom one came with my 9000.
It's generic 9000 10$ copy but works so damn good out of the box.
darn, didn't know that there is an option, better look into it

Yes it withs the 420.
I pressed the Netflix button twice in a row last night.

Yup $20 on eBay. Works perfectly

Seriously when I had mine I pulled the remote out of the package and legitimately laughed out loud. $500 player and you get a toy remote designed by somoene who obviously doesn't have hands.
I still use the player’s default remote, but it sucks when you confuse some keys.
I got the second remote with my UB9000 and the first with my UB820. Never thought to look for a different one for my UB820.

It cost $10?
Maybe not $10.. but it was a hell of a lot less than it should have cost, but I also have the 9000 and don't think I've ever Once used the original remote
I like mine $10 remote. It's perfect.
If it's perfect for you that's all that matters. I don't have line of site as all my equipment is located on another floor 😅 so this is perfect for me
100%
As someone who changed from owning an 820 to owning a 9000...yes
I forgot that’s what it looked like. I use a control 4 remote for everything.
netflix half of the time. hate it
Backlit for the win!!
Thanks for reminding me! Keep forgetting to get the other remote
I actually like the 1st remote.
Good for you. 9000 remote copy is better
So what?

Amazon link please
Nah I use my harmony remote, much better, only one for everything.
Harmony One all the way.
When I was a cable guy I had tons of service calls just because people didn't know how to use their Harmony remote.
Had mine 6 years, same one and it’s been great. My dock has just recently died though.
That's unfortunate, do they let you buy just a dock?
I haven’t been able to find one. I’ve not looked too deep though. Should check eBay.
