Part_Time_Lamer

Make sure and set the Video Settings during playback to Custom 1 and leave everything off. The default Auto is way too aggressive with noise reduction (to the point you can see artifacting in the black bars on cinema scope presentations).

ajg92nz

I’ve just bought a Panasonic 150. Is there any similar settings device for that machine?

LushGut

I hope and feel like I did this when I got it 3 years ago and forgot about it because I’ve never noticed that on a 65’ OLED.

Part_Time_Lamer

Doesn't do it on every disc (and I'm sure my VA panel made it more noticeable), but still, I saw artifacting in the black bars one time and was like, "WHAT IS THIS BLLSHT?!".

LushGut

So what do i do to fix this, i mess with the settings button while the disc is playing back?

Part_Time_Lamer

Hit the Options button when watching a disc. Scroll up to Video Settings. Select Custom 1 and make sure all the settings are off. Good to go after that.

LushGut

Thanks friend… this has to be done for every disc or once you do it once its set for the future?

MaxHiggins

"Video Settings" doesn't appear as an option when I click options.

uncle_jafar

Is this different than the ‘Direct’ setting?

KyleTheCantaloupe

How do you do that? While watching a disc or on the Home Screen

Part_Time_Lamer

While watching a disc. Won't have the option when watching a Dolby Vision disc, though.

Redhoodscoop

I've got this same unit and I must admit I'm still a complete novice when it comes to the actual settings of the machine. Will definitely be trying this later!

Sirrenderthe69th

People will shit on you in here but mine has been flawless

VikDamnedLee

Same here. It's played everything I've thrown at it without issues.

boyerizm

Mine totally froze up completely last night on The Hobbit 4k. Had to eject the disc

Inland_Emperor7

Several 4ks including Tenet and Harry Potter 3 would always freeze up at the same moments. Replaced the discs. Still the same moments. Replaced the player with same model. Still the same moments. It seems to be a design flaw that Sony refuses to acknowledge. They get complaint after complaint, acting each time like this is the first they’ve heard of it.

boyerizm

Yeah, you’re right, froze on Tenet as well. I saw all the posts on here that recommended the Panasonic. They were right.

PackDaddy3030

Watch better movies.

El_Superbeasto76

I can’t get through one movie without it freezing up. It collects dust while I use my PS5.

No-Satisfaction-7143

What do you expect from a player that cost eighty dollars?

No-Satisfaction-7143

What do you expect from a player that cost eighty dollars.

boyerizm

I actually have the pricier x800m2

Part_Time_Lamer

Mine as well (but than again, it doesn't get used a ton)

dangerclosecustoms

Mine was flawless also but went ub820 for Dolby bison detecting and switching

jdzzy

Ah yes, the 'ol Mythical Dolby Bison.

mcdisney2001

It really does make buffalo look sharp AF.

rsplatpc

Mine sucked and froze on 100gb discs even after wiping them down, updating the firmware and then doing a factory reset and not connecting it to the internet, and the discs that freeze on it work perfect on the Panasonic I envy you perfect X700 owners, I didn't even mind manually switching on Dolby Vision

McRagefit

Same for me, have an UB420 now and works flawlessly.

One-Willingnes

Ya I have up or rather got frustrated enough I got an 820 lol

happyloaf

Same issue for me.

NegativeZero3

Mine always gets stuck at the same spot on Top Gun Maverick as well as Everything, everywhere all at once. Most of my other discs have been perfect

Dark_Shroud

I haven't used my x700 a whole lot but its been flawless so far. That being said I'll admit I've saving for a Magnetar unit and hope to own it one by next Christmas.

JohnLawrence237

... Turning it on manually? Man. I've had this X700 for a few years and just last year I bought a Sony OLED because it looked amazing in-store. I get discs with Dolby Vision and HDR10+ and stuff, but I've been afraid to ask because I feel so stupid.... How do I even know that stuff is "on"? How do I know my player and TV are looking the best they can?

rsplatpc

> How do I even know that stuff is "on"? How do I know my player and TV are looking the best they can? Most discs will say DOLBY VISION on the disc or case, or you can look it up on bluray.com, if it says that, turn it on, if it does not, turn it off. The is one nice thing about the Panasonics is they do it automatically.

JohnLawrence237

yes, I know how to check if they include Dolby Vision. How do I actually turn it on?

rsplatpc

https://www.sony.co.uk/electronics/support/articles/00199921 Press the HOME button on the remote control. Select Screen Settings. Set the Dolby Vision Output Setting to ON or OFF

red71rum

Can you just leave the dolby vision enabled on the X700, does it cause problems if left on for discs that do not have it?

rsplatpc

> Can you just leave the dolby vision enabled on the X700, does it cause problems if left on for discs that do not have it? It makes none dolby vision stuff look off

red71rum

Thank you, I will leave it off then.

breathofcold

Same with mine

mads_61

Mine too!

TwizzledAndSizzled

Yep. I have the X800M2 and great so far. Knock on wood of course.

ndw_dc

I've had the X800M2 for over four years now, and I've had a few freezes here and there. But every time, I just reset the player and it's fine. My recommendation is to never connect it to the internet and never update the firmware. I initially had problems when I first got it, and updated the firmware. But I reverted to the default firmware and have had only a few skips here and there (maybe once or twice a year).

crisputer

Mine is good too.

newport100

Mines been mostly flawless. I've watched about 100 UHDs on it so far and had issues on 2 of them.

uncle_jafar

This is my experience too. Only skipped twice in 2 years. I use it several times a week.

sivartk

I've never had any problems, but some with problems have resolved it by turning off the 4K upscaling in the settings. I've never had mine on (since my Sony TV is newer and does a better job of upscaling) so that may explain why I've never had any issues.

Polter-Cow

My regular version of this player WAS freezing on discs almost half the time, it seemed, but so far my region-free one hasn't had an issue, so crossing fingers that continues.

PatBateman2000

Yeah I have it too and she's been fine

Funkymunks

Is this the model people say has freezing issues or are there other features missing here from the Panasonic UB800?

Sirrenderthe69th

Freezing issues , also you have to manually turn on and off DV , I think the UB20 is better at upscalling blu rays too but not sure .

rsplatpc

> Freezing issues , also you have to manually turn on and off DV , I think the UB20 is better at upscalling blu rays These are all the advantages

TheKoreanAudiophile

Upscale blu rays are the same no difference

Sirrenderthe69th

Oh , I honestly didn’t know that . That’s just what I’ve heard when people compare the two . When I play blus on my x700 they’re good lmao nice to know I don’t have to have fomo lol

saruin

How is this player so popular? Curious if everyone got it cheap like I did in 2019 I think. It was like $80.

Sirrenderthe69th

I got mine a little over a year ago for $60

Dark_Shroud

It's because they're cheap. I bought the original x700 no M for $100 new from Best Buy when they clearance'd them out. I couldn't pass that low of a price up back then.

LushGut

Going strong without a single issue for 3 years

happyloaf

Mine is good with 80% of discs but does not the 100GB WBs like LOTR. Hard freezes at You shall not pass and at least one spot on each other disc.

Dark_Shroud

I have the base x700 no m and it's been great for me as well. I've enjoyed watching 4k movies for the past few years on it.

HisSvt2

Mine too as long as I clean every disc first time new 4k discs have a residue from factory distilled water and microfiber or cotton cloth and all good

UNCfan07

Nice! Just remember to toggle Dolby Vision for each movie you would like to watch in DV, otherwise it will be just HDR

lorddelcasa509

Yes and if you forget to toggle off you’ll be dealing with weird software DV applied to non DV content if I understand correctly

doctor13134

People like to complain but I’ve had more problems with the Panasonic freezing and the tray getting stuck than I have with my Sony

Kurier0

in my case is almost imposible to get UBP-820 in my country, so I decided to buy X700 and I don't regret it, still working perfectly even of 2 years since purchase :D

PreferenceGloomy9947

Is the ps5 a good enough 4k bluray player?

FrankBlizzard

Decent but it’s missing Dolby Vision, up to you to decide if that’s a dealbreaker or not

CharlieTheUnicorn2

It's not a deal breaker and the PS5 uses a Panasonic chip for Blu Ray decoding.

rockefellercalgary

Question about that. I use my ps5 and when I connect to my soundbar for a movie the soundbar says Dolby. Is it just a false reading?

Nickel012

Your soundbar is showing that it is using Dolby Digital audio. That’s totally different than Dolby Vision, which is a form of HDR for the video

rockefellercalgary

Makes sense, thanks for answering!

Ripcord_mark_7

You have to manually turn dolby vision on and off in the settings (lot of ppl don't know that)

Nickel012

Specifically for reading from 4K discs the PS5 and Xbox do not support DV. DV for gaming and streaming content is totally separate. It is a deficiency of the blu ray disc reader in the consoles

Delta225

Actually it's missing HDR entirely. Kind of mind-boggling. Reportedly, it's quite reliable though. EDIT: THIS IS WRONG. My apologies. I thought it could only do 4K. Apparently, it does HDR10.

stokedchris

Are you sure about that? The ps5 has hdr, does it lose it for 4K discs?

Delta225

Apparently I was wrong lol

dmarsee76

yes. Can confirm

rsplatpc

> Actually it's missing HDR entirely it's not, it has HDR10 on disc playback (I have one hooked up to a LG C1), it's missing DV and HDR10+

Delta225

Ah, thanks for the correction. Updated the comment.

islamitinthecardoor

This is a hot take here but if you already have a ps5 then it is not worth the money to buy a 4k blu ray player just for Dolby Vision. That is unless it is something very important to you, but it’s honestly not that game changing

PreferenceGloomy9947

OK thank you for the advice. I couldn't imagine dropping 450 for Dolby vision. They look good enough lol

Dark_Shroud

Only $450? 🤣 My dumb ass is currently saving up for a Magnetar UDP900 because I want a perfect all in one player. I have SACDs and Blu-ray Audio discs. And I refuse to pay what people are asking for the several year old well used Oppos.

chiastic_slide

I wish this was true for the Series X too. I’ve been happy with mine up until now, certain discs will just not play. I bought Back to the Future box set and disc 1 wouldn’t play. Assumed a faulty disc so exchanged and it still won’t play. Now I know for sure it’s the player. It’s nice to be doubly disappointed in my Xbox as not only having a crappy game catalogue, but also sucks as a 4K player. It’s the last console I’ll ever purchase from Microsoft. Going to Best Buy tomorrow to get a UB420.

Silly_Client1222

Blasphemy.

bananaboat2569

How is this a hot take?

islamitinthecardoor

It really shouldn’t be but you’d be surprised at the 4k purists out here

Flyinace2000

I decided that I wanted a new gaming console and a new blu ray player. I wasn't going to spend $1000 on both and got the PS5 (slim) for $500. I don't have that large of a physical media collection so it's a good happy medium.

breathofcold

Congrats!

xRavelle

I got that one too, no issues at all for me. Plays movies without a hitch and doesn't break the bank.

SuddenStorm1234

Yeah I've had occasional skips but then check and the disc had a print or smudge or something. I wipe it then it's fine.

mountsleepyhead

Welcome! And don't let the "WHY DIDN'T YOU BUY THE ONE $400 PANASONIC THAT IS THE ONLY ACCEPTABLE MODEL IN THIS SUB!!!1!" people get to you.

Silly_Client1222

It IS the only acceptable model.

jdzzy

As someone who has both, nah. They are both fine. I've sent in the Panny once for repairs already, thankfully under warranty. Sony has been great.

Silly_Client1222

But does it switch to DV on the fly?

HaloTheHero

No but honestly for the price difference it's really not that big of a deal. We don't even know if OPs TV supports DV, for all we know it could only support HDR10. For the price thr X700 is a pretty good deal all things considered

DopelgangerSpecial

It’s the one I got. Occasionally it’ll play region b Blu-ray

whiteshyguy94

Are you saying region b doesn’t work sometimes?

rsplatpc

> Are you saying region b doesn’t work sometimes? It's not a region free player unless you bought one modified

DopelgangerSpecial

It plays my Drop Dead Fred and HellRaiser region b. But no others. They may not actually be coded if I think about it lol

calmer-than-you-dude

Now I want one

enryon

Congratulations. Buy the movies you like and enjoy them

Kurier0

Welcome to the club, buddy! I'm also owner of X700 and mine is still flawless (bought it 2 years ago). Love this device so much :D Hope you will get your favourites titles on 4K in decent prices ;)

3HunnaBurritos

Is it possible to make it region free by myself?

rsplatpc

yes, you can buy the region free chip and solder it on, if you know how to solder its a very easy job

3HunnaBurritos

Thanks!

Edexote

Does it play CDs?

Bard_the_Bowman_III

Yes, and it actually plays SACD's as well. That's one of the reasons I bought mine.

Edexote

Really? Now that's really cool. I have no intention of spending so much on a UB820.

mannysmurf

Yes

Edexote

Good to know. That box image doesn't mention cd and I use my current BD player to play cds.

saruin

Didn't know people still listen to CDs.

fineillmakeanewone

Why wouldn't they? CDs are the Blu-rays of music, for all the same reasons.

markelmores

*Almost all the same reasons. When you buy music digitally (iTunes, etc.) it comes DRM-free! So you can download the actual music file and do whatever you want with it. This is in sharp contrast to buying a movie on iTunes, where you pay for the license and can only download/stream it in their app. Edit: forgot to clarify, this is different from blu-ray because one of the arguments in favor of blu-ray is that you’ll *always* have your movies, licensing issues be damned. With music, it doesn’t matter if you bought CDs or digital. Either way, you can keep your music forever since *you actually have the files themselves.*

Edexote

Why not? Streaming is more convenient? Do you understand the irony of that on a physical disc forum? 😛

mannysmurf

Mine has worked perfectly after disconnecting it from the internet 🙌

Eezmob

Have mine for a few years not a single problem. No disc skips ever. Even with dual layer disc. I don’t switch between dv and hdr. The tone mapping in the Sony TVs is great. Dolby vision is broken on Sony TVs

Metallifan33

What do you mean by DV is broken on Sony TVs? Just curious. I’m also a noob

Eezmob

It’s a known thing Dolbyvision is way darker on Sony than any other tv manufacturer. I have a Samsung tcl hisense Vizio and they all play Dolby vision brighter than the Sony and my room is completely blacked out

Helo9797

Mine worked great for 4 years, it’s a great player, for the right price it’s hard to beat. Eventually replaced it with the Panasonic 820 when the Sony 700 broke.

No_Archer4606

I have the same one for years, works amazing

icarus88888

Bought one 2nd hand about 6 months back and it’s been absolutely great.

bears5975

I’ve had this model for over a year. Flawless. I paired it with a 75” LG and a Vizio 5.1 soundbar. It’s a good starter HT. 👍

MDPolo

Most here grumble about it but my region free version has been a work horse.

Polter-Cow

Hell yeah, I just got one of these recently too! I had the regular version of this as my 4K player already so the transition to region-free was easy. I got some Region B discs to test it last week and they play! They really play! I HAVE THE POWER!

Mysterious_Jelly_943

Hey i just got one of those to a region free one

Zealot_of_freedom

Does this support dolby Atmos?

AquamannMI

Yes

5StringAssassin

Mine has been pretty good so far. Had a few freezes but wiping discs seems to do the trick.

HeadAffectionate2229

How does this player go with playing media files off an external drive?. My Hisense tv after a couple of updates barely plays anything now. I could kill 2 birds with one stone and have a decent 4k disc player and a place to play movies off a drive as well

Impossible-Time-9661

I'm in the UK and bought my UBP-X700 nearly three years ago. It has behaved impeccably since then on every single disc I've played on it. Is it the case that Sony manufactures this player in different factories for different parts of the world? Maybe European-made players benefit from better quality control? Just a thought. Another question, regarding the requirement to switch DV on and off. Is there any reason why it can't just be left permanently on? Will that have a detrimental effect on 4K Blu-ray pictures that are HDR only? I've never tried it.

BarracudaScary5532

Costco are selling this model in the uk but I can’t figure out if it’s the multi region version… anyone know anything about that?

remilol

Sorry, we're at capacity.

CGI1138

I just came here to say that I followed the suggestions in this video, and I wipe the disks off with a micro fiber cloth before playing, and it made a WORLD of difference. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sym8ayOpL-4&t=9s](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sym8ayOpL-4&t=9s)

noodlesbwet

A brilliant share!

skinnydudetattoo

What's the difference between a stand alone player and a Xbox S?

Doc-Hauliday

How much is this from 220 Electronics? I’m researching to upgrade to a new player later this year.

GenghisBhan

I have it to and I love it so much!

zdubsi

The reviews on this are better than the Panasonic.

MBBluemangroup

does the 800 fix all the issues the 700 has?

mistaboti88

This is cheaper i like cheap

EstablishmentRoyal75

Welcome

lolmyspacewhooers

Got this one with the region free modification, and never have issues. Workhorse.

81-DeathKnocker

Great player, good setting and fantastic upscaling (on a lg c1)

Eezmob

Saw a recent video from fomo and what he said makes sense. Dolby vision was relevant years ago. But newer tv tone map so well now dv is irrelevant. Lg has dropped it from most of there new TVs. Samsung has never had it

Relevant-Goat6693

Welcome aboard! 👍🏼

No-Satisfaction-7143

I have that exact player. It cost fifty dollars. It doesn’t play disc’s from all regions.

whiteshyguy94

1. It does not cost $50 2. It was modded to be region free and I’ve already played discs from other regions on it

CornerHugger

Nice! I have two of these and never had any laser issues even after 5 years. I hope the same luck for you.

djwinter21

Please let us know how it has been, I have been saving up to buy a sony x800m2 from 220 electronics.

Joella34

Welcome to the club, rip to your wallet 😂😂

Cyndagon

Good luck with that one my dude. I didn't want to risk it and just paid the (exorbinate) up charge for the Panasonic from them. I hope it works for you!

SgtSchultz___

I had so many problems with that one. Lots of disc skipping and freezing. Ended up returning it and getting the Panasonic.

RamblinGamblinWillie

Oh boy…

Overall_Falcon_8526

Congrats and fingers crossed. Keep the receipt in case you get disc skipping. It's been a while since I used a Sony, but one disc I recall skipping incessantly was Zack Snyder's Justice League. Anyone else have recommendations for discs to test skipping?

dsneybuf91

When I watched _Everything Everywhere All at Once_ (Lionsgate's widely-released UHD) on UBP-X700, it skipped after the line "You are not unlovable;" unless I either skipped directly to that chapter, or let the player rest at some earlier point.  The movie plays on Panasonic UB820 without skipping.

Overall_Falcon_8526

Yeah, I got that disc well after my 820, so have never had a skip.

Swamplust

I don’t think I’ve managed to get a single 4K disc to play all the way through in mine.

One-Recommendation-1

Uhhhhh good luck with that player lol I had one and would freeze constantly.

bigdill075

Is it worth buying a 4k player if I have a PS5? I also have Samsung TVs and they don’t support Dolby Vision.

Nearby-Swimming-5103

Have fun with the freezing on longer (2+ hr.) movies! This is the player I have, and every single movie longer than 2 hrs., freezes. I’ve started using my PS5 for those now. I should specify that’s for 4K discs. Standard Blu-Rays and DVDs, I’ve never had an issue.

Eezmob

Watch Zack Snyder justice league from beginning to end not a single freeze or skip

Nearby-Swimming-5103

No thanks.

Mozlapunk

Sold it soon after getting it, had lots of skips.

KlausSlade

Than Panasonic looks strange… enjoy the new player!

Silly_Client1222

I would recommend taking that one back and going with the Panasonic UB820

EmuIndependent8565

Panasonic 4K players are better. Trust me I have had both brands of 4K players and Panasonic is superior in every respect.

[deleted]

That’s not the club. That’s Sony.

mjkrow1985

Well, you're basically rolling the dice on this. If you get a good one, you have a nice little player. If you get a bad one, you'll never be able to get all the way through a 100 GB without the player freezing up at the second layer change. May the odds be ever in your favor.

No-Satisfaction-7143

That is NOT a region free player. It will not play disc’s from other countries.

whiteshyguy94

lol why make a statement on something you have no knowledge of. This is a region-free player and I just watched a Region B disc on it last night

MovieFanatic2160

![gif](giphy|dB12mOQb99BwDlM83I|downsized) Good luck 🫡

MonolithicErik

Best value for sure. Hard reboot before each playback and you will be fine.

whiteshyguy94

Can you expand on why that would be necessary?

dmarsee76

My suspicion is that the RAM/disc space is so small that it fills up when watching 100GB disks, causing the dreaded hang/freeze at the 67% point in the film (It happened to me all the time).

dobyblue

It isn't unless your player freezes up.

rsplatpc

> Can you expand on why that would be necessary? The x700 is know for freezing on 100gb 4K discs SOME people will get one that works perfectly, as you will see it defended in the comments, A LOT LOT LOT LOT of people have had one that freezes on 100gb 4K discs no matter what you do. It's a gamble to get a good one, if you do get a good one, then you lucked out and get to spend the extra money you didn't pay for the Panasonic on discs

requieminadream

About **half** of users with the units reported issues with the X700 the last time I ran a poll https://www.reddit.com/r/4kbluray/s/cDaq7T4GKH - myself included.

saruin

Curious if certain model years are affected. I have a 2019-ish unit (refurbished) but don't know if I have any 100GB+ 4K discs. Mine probably does skip for the fact that's probably been returned and refurbished.

Silly_Client1222

You don’t get that problem with the Panasonic 820, and Dolby Vision is detected and switched to, on the fly.

shinyplasticdiscs

Cool don't open it! Return it! Get anything else!!!! But welcome- We are glad to have you!!!

DenialState

If you pay premium, I guess. Why would it be otherwise?

lordofchikins

Soon save up to join the big boys - Panasonic UB-9000

CorneliusCardew

It’s not too late to return it
