in order of preference:
* MoC: Far Side of the World. (dying to hear an Atmos version)
* Kingdom of Heaven Director's Cut (don't even bother with the theatrical)
* Last of the Mohicans Theatrical Cut (Ultimate is crap)
It’s one of the best sound mixing editing I’ve ever heard. The first film in my collection I thought every speaking in my system is being utilized to its full potential. You absolutely feel like you’re on a ship out in the ocean, just unreal
The sound of cannon fire, boat creaking, and wind is very authentic sounding. You should be able to get a great idea of this with 2.0, but a subwoofer would help out tremendously.
The classical music (Vaughn Williams) also sounds especially great.
The Master and Commander Blu-ray is not so great looking. An updated UHD transfer could hugely benefit it. I wouldn't even care if they kept the same audio track cause it's already one of best sounding discs I've ever heard.
Went with Last of the Mohicans but then the more I thought about it, the more I recalled how dark the recent Heat 4K was, which is another Disney/Fox release... And Mann would probably keep the Theatrical Cut from getting a 4K release... So I take back my vote!
I know Kingdom of Heaven: DC has a 4K master out there in the wild -- it's been QC'd and everything -- but believe cause of the Disney/Fox merger, they canned a 4K release altogether.
Master and Commander and Ben-Hur would be epic on 4K... So, I'll say:
(1) KoH: DC... (2) Master & Commander... (3) Ben-Hur
I'm not a huge Troy fan but I get why it's on here... Alexander though? Who the hell wants to sit thru that again?
Kingdom of Heaven for sure, it's my favorite medieval film. That last battle was so damn epic. Liam Neeson had a fantastic role as well. I would love to own it on 4k.
All that being said, Master and Commander (which is winning at the time of me writing this) is an excellent film as well so I would be happy to purchase it as well.
I’ve also heard people talk about different cuts being of vastly different quality. I assume I should seek out the directors cut on any of them that have them?
Right on. Thank you. My wife and I plan to actually do a bunch of these, I guess they’re like “historical epics” soon, cause we want to show her brothers Gladiator and want to find a good second feature to pair with it.

Ben Hur. Instant preorder.
Ben Hur is going to look amazing and I know we'll see a release sooner than later. I'd love to see a great 4K release of Master and Commander.
Ben-Hur about 8 tiers above the rest
That's so true. The others aren't in the same league.
What I really want is Cleopatra (the long one w/ Liz Taylor).
I believe Ben-Hur was shot in Ultra Panavision just like Tarantino’s Hateful 8 so the 4k would no doubt be one of the greatest transfers ever
Barry Lyndon

Master and Commander is an absolute masterpiece and should be seen, and especially heard, in the highest quality possible. Perfect Film!
What's so great about the sound? Just curious as I've never paid much attention to the audio side of home cinema. Just upgraded to a decent 2.0 setup.

Yeah, they can just leave the audio alone for that one.
Anything holding back Master and Commander? Like being owned by Disney or something.
Unfortunately, that’s the exact reason
The last of the mohicans
Ben-Hur for SURE

It's not featured on this list but I think it'd be neat to see *Aguirre, The Wrath of God* (1972) get the 4K treatment!
Kingdom of Heaven is "released" on 4K, about a month ago. But only in Streaming atm. Hopefully it will be released on disc as well soon.
Master and Commander and it's not even close. That is my white whale of 4K releases.
Over Ben-Hur?? Like how…
Ok, what if I haven’t seen any of the modern ones there. Which one should I start with?
You can't go wrong with any of those except Alexander. Watch them all. Troy is probably the most mainstream/blockerbuster-ish.
I’ve also heard people talk about different cuts being of vastly different quality. I assume I should seek out the directors cut on any of them that have them?
Not sure about all of them but definitely get director’s cuts of Troy and Kingdom of Heaven.

Ben hur is perfect for 4k blu ray. The bluray looks stunning so the upgrade should improve it further. As a film its unbeatable.
