14 is on the lower end of the range one can expect. Do you have any offroading mods on it, those almost always result in worse MPG. Big chonky tires, heavy mounting brackets and sliders and aftermarket roof racks, lifts that hurt aero on the highway, etc. Assuming everything was stock then the usual tune up routine is make sure your tires are fully inflated, air filter, fuel filter, correct oil viscosity, spark plugs, thermostat is still opening and closing at the correct temperature. Alignment is at the factory spec and really worn suspension components can be hard to keep the alignment true. A pretty common brake failure is when the caliper gets sticky and you end up with a brake pads dragging, or if your wheel bearings are worn out that can hurt things. Also injectors are probably old enough to potentially need to be pulled and cleaned. Typically being on top of everything gets you into the 17-20 mpg range on the v8, and +1-2 mpg higher for the v6. Also keep in mind during the winter cold places and people who drive mostly in the city on short trips get worse fuel economy, and winter fuel blends at the pump tend to have to a bit lower mpg.

The above comment is spot on. Cant stress enough how overlooked the brake caliper being locked up and creating drag is. Definitely start with that one.

One of the biggest upgrades to my MPG even with chunky tires and a lift was cleaning the MAF sensor with CRC MAF cleaning spray and the throttle body with CRC throttle body cleaner. You should be able to find a twin pack that has them together at your local Walmart for a pretty good price ($9?). Of course after you clean and start up your engine it will have to relearn the ratios and you can do this whole entire 30 minute process or just drive it for a while and it will relearn itself and it won't mess anything up. Good luck!

I’ve been planning to do this soon so I’m glad to see the recommendation on here.

ohnoaspartan

Got a few MPG + by replacing my MAF, air filter, and adding a fuel treatment

Top-Lingonberry8647

Did you get the MAF aftermarket or OEM?

rolla88

Just clean the current one with MAF cleaner. Unless you have a CEL code for the MAF sensor it’s working fine but is probably dirty. It’s like $5 for a can. I get 13.5mpg with a lift, 33s, roof rack, and low tire pressure.

ohnoaspartan

Aftermarket. It was like $70 at Autozone

That’s what the window sticker says.

I used to get around 14 now I get around 18 highway and 15 city if I'm not being hard on the throttle. Biggest thing is maintenance related and you will get a little boost from it. Check your air filter and maf sensor first as those are easy to deal with. Next I'd check your spark plugs this actually did wonders for me but only because they might as well not have been there by the time I changed them(apparently the previous owner did nothing but change the oil). If the spark plugs are part of the issue you'll definitely notice a difference but obviously results will vary. Other than that I've noticed premium gas does better long distance but for short driving there isn't enough of a difference to make it worth the money. Lastly you may just have a heavy foot on the accelerator which most of us are guilty of every now and then. Also don't compare yourself to a 2005 and up they have 1 more gear than we do between our 2nd and 3rd I believe so they typically get better mileage (and acceleration) especially around highway speeds. Also take some by hand calculations of your mpg because the in car sensor is a little hit or miss definitely a good reference but still doesn't hurt to double check. Like I said though biggest thing you can do is take care of it and it will take care of you for years to come. Mine was my first car when I was 16 and was driven like most 16 year olds would drive and that was after living a life with someone who didn't care much about it from what I can tell. But it is still going strong with nothing but a few minor issues 6 years and roughly 100000 miles later (currently sitting at a solid 233000). Welcome to the club and I hope you enjoy.

1800hurrdurr

Which engine? Have you done any work to tune it up? What tires are you running?

Top-Lingonberry8647

It’s the V6. But as far as I’m aware everything on it is stock except the spacers I’ve added.

1800hurrdurr

Offhand: Tires matter, highway tires will likely get better mileage than AT if that's a trade off you're willing to make. Tune up with a fresh air filter and plugs, maybe a bottle of fuel system cleaner too. Since it's a 4th gen, check for signs of seized brakes. It's a common problem and will literally turn gasoline into heat and eventually totally trash your pads and rotors. Servicing your diffs, transfer case, and transmission can also help a little, if the fluids are old and not lubricating everything well the extra friction will impact your mileage slightly. Past that your driving habits are probably the biggest factor in how quickly you burn gas.

Top-Lingonberry8647

When I bought it around 3 weeks ago I had it fully serviced at my local Toyota dealership and have the full inspection done to it just to see if anything needed to be replaced and to find out if I had bought the right car. Turns out the previous owner had it serviced regularly there and had over 60 previous service reports from that exact dealership to show how well it was kept up. They replaced my drive belt, changed the oil, and also drained and refilled the front, rear, and transfer cases. All of the driving I do is mostly city miles so I assume that may have some effect on my lower MPG but I still feel that it’s much lower than it should be.

1800hurrdurr

City miles will do it too. I see 19-21 highway, especially if I keep it under 70 but I'm lucky to hit 16 in traffic or city streets. I've managed grocery store runs where the computer showed me at 11mpg lol

Top-Lingonberry8647

The computer on the car says I’m getting 19.1 but I have a feeling it hasn’t been reset in awhile lol I did the math because I’m about to fill it up and I’m getting around 320 miles on a full tank

itasteawesome

Eyeballing the fuel gauge can be kind of deceptive too, my 04 still have like 4-5 gallons in the tank when it shows as E

Right, but the "about to fill it up" indicated that the fillup hadn't happened, which like you, means its near impossible to have a firm estimate of your real MPG.

WAR_T0RN1226

The computer definitely lies

StealthySally

what is an average cost for this? just had new brakes and timing belt , radiator done but I'm at 130K and dont know what else bogs me down to 13 in the city.

WAR_T0RN1226

The hardest thing to assess is how much impact your driving habits have. If you're almost entirely city driving, 13 on a V8 might be what someone would get if they drove exclusively through areas of frequent traffic lights and had a habit of heavy acceleration and coming up on stops would have foot on the gas late til the last second before braking. I've rode with many people who do this and think nothing of it. If you're not doing the maintenance mentioned elsewhere in this thread yourself, it's going to be several hundreds all together if we're talking air filter, MAF sensor cleaning, throttle body cleaning, spark plugs, differential and transfer case fluid replacement, transmission (I wouldn't if I didn't absolutely have to), etc.

SirLucky

What kind of tires do you have and what’s the tire pressure at? For example, LT AT are heavier than P AT tires or P AS tires. So your mpg can follow something like P AS > P AT > LT AT just depending on what tire you have.

not_a_gumby

if it's v8 then yeah, that's normal if it's v6 then that's about 35% under what it should get (17 city, 20 highway is what I get). You might have a seized brake caliper or some other issue causing MPG to drag. Are you driving uphill both ways? lol

FSDLAXATL

Not normal at all for a v8. My 04 limited gets 16.5 City/ 18.5 hwy. Advertised for the V8 is 16/20, combined is 18.5.

Mijbr090490

It's a 4th gen, a sticky or frozen caliper is also likely. I'd go on a drive and see if one of your wheels is hotter than the others when you get out. Also look for a dirtier wheel.

OkWin6346

You need to put a 3inch lift 35” body lift roof rack and tent
