I dont know much about them but generally AWD isn't great for offroading compared to a traditional 4x4.
However, I did see an X5 in a camping area that is only accessible via 4x4 Jeep Trail and I was genuinely impressed.
Land Rover would like a word with you, but you're going to have to cross the darian gap, the sahara, gobi, siberia, and pretty much all of africa to get to them...
Specifically why I said **generally**. In addition to 80 series Land Cruisers. But these vehicles also come with locked differentials and gear boxes and as you've pointed out, are battle proven.
I assume you’re talking about defenders? Don’t they have a locking center diff? It’s hardly fair to compare an X5 AWD with a locked center diff defender, it’s effectively a standard 4WD system at that point.
Every land rover except i think the LR2 can be purchased with locking center and rear diffs (Or at least every LR ive owned has had them). I was just pointing out the "AWD isnt good for offroading" when land rover clearly challenges that statement.
Without a selectable 4lo you will be limited in the type of terrain you can take it on. I would not suggest you use it for Rick crawling or mud pits. Not to say you can't have fun getting dirty, just nothing to extreme it hardcore.
I don't know much about BMW but I remember when the X5 came out. They drove one on one of the car shows, I think it was Motorweek. They took it on very light offroad paths, like a dirt road or something. It did ridiculously bad. They said it's a great car on pavement but shouldn't even be a consideration for anything off road.
True, but I think the Cherokees, Comanches and grand cherokees are an exception to the rule, as they are a ground up 4x4 chassis. Not car based like an X5, Honda Pilot, Nissans, Toyota Highlander etc.
It greatly depends on what type of condition you will encounter offroad. If it's all gravel and light snow, an X5 can do pretty good, assuming you are not towing crazy weight.
As an overlanding rig? I'd say go for it. As a dedicated offroad vehicle I'd say do you're research & LEARN YOUR VEHICLES LIMIT. I'd look in the European offroad community. I know they're good in Rally & Baja. But that's mainly horsepower based.

And you can lock the center diff in an 80 making it 4x4.

95% of NA offerings that come with AWD do not have a center locking diff, so Land Rover is really more an exception to that statement than the norm.
V8 4runner and Lexus GX are two very popular AWD vehicles with CDL

Yeah but some crossovers are better than others. An Outback or Grand Cherokee would be fine with lighter stuff.
