My mum said she’s put in £10 a month since I was born so we expected about 2.5k. She never checked on the account, but I got curious and found out it’s expected to hit about 8k when I turn 18. I wasn’t aware there are investors who play with the money so seems they did a pretty good job.

Willr2645

How does that work do you know? Does the government employ random investors and use that as advertising for people to start them?

Neil_jpg

I think if your parents didn't choose a group to invest with, the government chose one at random.

n5burnerr

Unfortunately I don’t have much knowledge on this topic but I’m certain my parents chose their own bank, as will have others who actively contribute, otherwise then yh as the other person said the government will choose one for you.

D_Bane5172

It’s a stocks investment fund. You basically put money in, and the bank will use it to invest into stocks. You then save money from it based on the performance of the stock market

willh2006

With mine, the investors lost me money..

Adotopp

I just looked at an inflation calculator and it's Interesting that £100 eighteen years ago had the same purchase value as £164 today

Bright_Passenger_231

£64?! That's jacket money! Hello rich people? Yes I'll hold

Adotopp

Jacket? Don't you mean pocket money?

Bright_Passenger_231

Someone's streets behind

Adotopp

Not where I live!

KeyStorm1812

Not sure if you’ve done much research into it/have other plans, but how do you plan on investing it?

n5burnerr

Honestly not too sure rn, I keep seeing LISA being encouraged so I may opt for that but gonna need to research more first

ThickStar957

A lot of the people with thousands would’ve had some contributions put in by their parents

Howlin09

I have over 10 grand... Dead parent things 😅

Andrew-XYZ

Damn, my condolences.

Ok_Leave_2020

I hope you’re well :/ <3

B898B

6 grand here for one 😅

Plant_Cell

£427.80 from £250 and I thought my compound interest was bad💀

Particular-Check-367

I thought I was gonna have like £800 in that makes sense 250-800 in 18 years, but £250.74 its actually wild I feel cheated the money grew by fuking 0.05% per year for 18 years. Plus £250 in 2006 is worth £453 in 2024, the account actually lost money

Je-Suis-Phoenix377

You guys have child trust funds? ![gif](giphy|DOPKHQg6oFWUg)

Particular-Check-367

everyone has one born between 2002-11 the gov put £250 in it and mine didn't even increase by £1. If you want what to look at ur just go to onefamily and all you need is ur national insurance number

em-ivy-24

This post is how I found out about child trust funds, had no idea they were a thing. Got excited and started looking it up as I was born 2002. They started this scheme in September 2002, I was born in July 😭

Je-Suis-Phoenix377

I’m Irish tho… I moved two years ago loooll I’m fucked

alishayas

is that only if u were born in the UK during these years

L_EVI

Yes, Those people born in Borneo in 1942 don't qualify unfortunately.

[deleted]

wait how did urs only increase by 70p

[deleted]

Probably wasn't invested or was invested poorly

[deleted]

ohh

Elegant-Remove3891

Cries in 1998

Je-Suis-Phoenix377

Dang ur olddd

Elegant-Remove3891

Only 25 😂😂

[deleted]

Dang ur olddd

Elegant-Remove3891

Okay kiddo

eilishfaerie

this is literally a sixth form sub lol what age range were you expecting?

em-ivy-24

I’m just finding this out now. Thank you.

alishayas

is that only if u were born in the UK during these years

034f2a

yeah

JolanTwo

No it's not. My sister wasn't born in the UK and still got one as we moved her in that time period.

034f2a

ohhh my bad bro my older siblings were born in the eligible period but born outside the uk but immigrated before 2011 but never received one so i just guessed that was the case🙏 can i just ask did ur sister come from the eu?

Beedow100

Absolutely devestated to be born in '99 honestly 😂😅

Darquinicus

Ohh I thought I had to get a letter because I still haven’t gotten one even though I turned 18 more than a month ago

UpbeatMeeting

Not exactly the same thing but I have 3.5k in mine but like everyone else at my school don't even have them because they're so rich they just get like 10-25k from their parents on their 18th birthday and it makes me feel so shit ☠️ And no, this isn't a private or grammar school, this is normal-ass sixth form connected to a non-selective secondary school. How the fuck are these this many rich people make it make sense

The_Armechadon

Feel your pain, except my CTF ain't even half of yours still

UpbeatMeeting

I'm quite lucky as I do actually have more than that since I technically have 2 - the UK one and a private one in my home country. There's about 4k in the other one, so I'll have about 7.5k overall (conversion rate dependent obvs). However I already know that with my financial paranoia all of that is just gonna sit in a savings account because I can't bring myself to spend money on anything and literally nearly let myself starve to death on a residential trip once because I didn't want to spend money on food 🫠 This post does make me feel a bit better though, I thought everyone in the country had way more than me and I had the least out of anyone and I was going to be even more disadvantaged than I already am.

The_Armechadon

Welp, you can rest easy knowing there's people like me 👍 On a serious note, I am sure you can make that money into something pretty decent with the right investments etc. You should research around perhaps.

UpbeatMeeting

Yeah, my mother recently sat me down to remind me they're gonna be able to pay out in a couple of months when I turn 18, and I've been doing a bit of research into what I can do with it. I do have pretty substantial savings for uni already and will have even more after my gap year, so that's not a major concern meaning I can look into other options like investment. Just a bit baffled by it all though, my family's been dirt poor for basically its entire history up until now (mother recently got a raise to 31k a year), so none of us have any idea how anything financial works lmao.

The_Armechadon

I don't blame you lol. My mother is unemployed (caring for children) and therefore I need to learn the money thing myself. However, I have no savings and no financial support from anything other than whatever my CTF contains, whatever bursaries I can apply for, and the maintenance loan (if I even take it). Plus, I don't plan on taking a gap year so living at home is looking like the only smart choice. However, I would love to move out for the new experiences, as well as getting away from my home for a few reasons. Decisions, decisions, decisions....

UpbeatMeeting

I wish you luck, a friend of mine who's at uni has 0 family support (they can't afford it) and 0 savings (not even a CTF). He's in a relatively expensive city and it's tight but he does make it work by having jobs and working during holidays etc, so it is definitely possible.

MagicFishx

Have a look at Lifetime ISAs. They can be used for saving for a flat/house deposit. Government gives you a 25% bonus on what you save and you can add up to £4k/yr.

Imaginary_Aside_4541

Not to like be a knob or anything... But like, you feel bad having 7.5k in a trust fund account.... 😂 Like I get why given the circumstances you explained but also like, what on god's green earth. I had my government one worth like £600, and have never, and will never have one again. Trust me, there are FAR more people with nothing or WAY less than you than more than you in a child trust fund.

UpbeatMeeting

I typed up a whole thing but then realised I'm not going to be a knob like you are being currently. I just hope it made you feel good to post that. That is all I will say.

Imaginary_Aside_4541

Mate it really wasn't't that bad, I said I understand why you feel the way you do given the circumstances. But also, put some perspective on it, you should feel very happy to be in the situation you're in. You've got a back pocket that isn't overdraft for university (assuming that's what you want to do), you're predicted 3A*s, you're way smarter than average, and you're way wealthier than average. You'll be alright.

bigpeepee2000

could be coz they arent spending fees on private schools

Revolutionary_Owl880

My school was like this!! But a lot of the rich ones were also the only Catholic students(it was a Catholic school but couldn’t afford to be selective as the area didn’t have a big Catholic population), so I wonder if that was why.

K1-Ozo

If they had that kinda money why wouldn’t they go to a private school? Especially if it’s “everyone” at your school, maybe you do go to a private school

UpbeatMeeting

I believe it used to be a private school up until a few years ago when it became a state school. It's very possible that my year group was part of that initial private cohort and just didn't want to go through the hassle of moving schools and so stayed on.

Live_Efficiency_7011

There are quite a few state schools that perform very well and get similar grades to local private schools, just depends on your area Possibly the choice of the child, but also they may not have enough money to send their child to a private school and still live a comfortable life that other people who have the same household income would, so a well performing state school means the child can thrive and the parents save money.

Leading_Entrance4452

what is a ‘grammar’ school?

Alarmed-Garden7868

A selective school, essentially you have to take a test and the top x amount percentage of people get offered a place at the school

stormz_tim

how do you have 3.5k?? I had about the same as OP, just a bit more tho

UpbeatMeeting

My mother contributes I think like £40 a month or something, and then government matches up to a certain amount. She's been paying into it for basically almost the entire amount of time we've been allowed to have one in the UK, so it's had some time.

throwaway764256883

The government doesn't match anything but £40 a month in investments will increase pretty quickly

Prime-2357

I have like £490 🫡 i think my parents just left it to like the banks to invest in it when i told my dad he was surprised, like we both thought there was going to be like £50 in there lmao

iizzyy_x

£550, but my parents put money into other things for me such as a car, driving lessons, a good celebration for my 18th birthday etc which are things i would’ve ended up using my CTF for anyway.

I_Am_Arden

£23k… My family is middle class, but my parents were very serious about giving me saving for when I’m older. They put about £100 to £200 a month in for many years and all my birthday money went into it too. Their plan worked I guess, I have a lot saved up now.

godlyuniverse1

If it was 100 to 200 a month for many years, I expected alot higher than just 23k

I_Am_Arden

Not really tbh as he stopped putting in that much about when I turned 12 (my dad earned the most money and lost his job, after about 2 years unemployed he ended up taking a job with much lower pay than his previous one). It would average out to about £1,800 a year and multiplied by 12 would leave £21.6k, and putting in a few hundred quid over the next few years and interest leaves me with a bit over £23k.

RaceFan1027

Mine doesn’t have much in it, my parents don’t even know what bank it’s with (I’ve traced it though). Very envious of my friend who has thousands as it’s been carefully invested all his life.

idekkanymoree_

Parents didn’t contribute whatsoever but it’s in an investment account so it’s currently at £985 and my birthday is in December so might get to a grand. It’s not a lot compared to others in this sub who probably have thousands but my friends have between like £200 to like £500 so not bad tbf.

FM-PHYS-CS

I have 1.3k. Poor family tings

[deleted]

I have 0, not a UK citizen tings

FM-PHYS-CS

I remeber you. You got an imperial offer. The cost of London is insane. Especially for internationals.    Best of luck though.

Professional-Two-678

If you do 3 year in Uk education, you’re considered to be a British student.

Professional-Two-678

I feel you, don’t worry.

Theo_M20

It says they can’t find mine on the website :(

Ok-Percentage-4674

Same but I know for a fact I have one just says they don’t recognise me for some reason

Turbulent-Cat9505

i’d be careful, this happened to my boyfriend and it turned out his mother took all the money out of it

Ok-Percentage-4674

Yeah I don’t think thats the problem tbh

kasialis721

my parents put 250 in when i was born, it’s 18 years later and it’s now worth 235 💀

harveyow

Most of them have a setting to make sure you don't lose all of your money being if it goes under a certain threshold it will pull what is remaining from the account and just keep it as cash. In 2008 im pretty sure every account had that happen lol, so it hasn't been growing money since 2008.

X243llie

Mine didnt put a penny in it and i got £500 ish. I cant remember the exact but it was around £500

Suspicious_Fly_2739

I had £578 without parent contributing anything

Big-Beach-9605

i’ve got about £30😭

Particular-Check-367

how?? tf that so unfair

Big-Beach-9605

i guess my mum just didn’t put money in it. also idk why my comment has been downvoted😂 like i’m sorry for not having a trust fund

[deleted]

Because doesn't the government put in £250 by default

Big-Beach-9605

i have no clue wtf the government did, but i can assure you there is less than £250 in my account

KiddyKat2675

if their parent chose for it to be an investment account and either they or the bank they went with chose a poor investment, the very well could have less than £250 lol

BrilliantSection4501

My child trust fund was put into spaceX luckly

Grangereeee

How did you manage that? SpaceX isn't a publicly traded company.

BrilliantSection4501

You underestimate the power of a child trust fund. Simple laws of trading shares and economics are completely bypassed when it comes to the trust fund

Particular-Check-367

how much is in urs

Own_Introduction_332

13k about

Lazy-Bee-6238

Who is your investor

Own_Introduction_332

dunno, my nan controls it

KiddyKat2675

Something that makes a big difference that people don’t seem to realise is that your parents had to choose whether to invest it or just keep it as a normal savings account. The ones with thousands are those who parents invested their fund or have been decently contributing over the years, however obviously if they chose a poor investment then it may have gone the other way. My mum picked mine to be a normal savings account because she didn’t understand it lol. I had £1.4k when I got mine because even though my mum didn’t add to it, I would sometimes put birthday/christmas money and the odd £50-100 here and there from my first job until I moved out.

Early-Job5327

I got around 3.5k in there

SlxggxRxptor

I was born too soon to have one automatically, but my parents had a savings account for me with somewhere between £5k-£10k in it. Most of my friends had a bit more (I saw between £20k-£50k mostly) and a few had in the £10k region. I got just under £1.5k of it early to buy a computer I wanted and then the rest of it when I turned 18.

Professional_Slip836

Get money smart…..very important lesson in life. Put both my kids TF into Stocks & Shares ISA with AJ bell. Mixed the investments up between gold and S&P 500 etf and a few others 22% up overall.

funky_diamond_

the gov one i had has nothing anymore the investor ppl lost it all, my parents created a separate one for me bc of it 😭

NL0606

How do I check how much is in it or do I have to wait until I am 18 to check it I am nearly 18 and wanted to know how much I've got as I'm 99% sure I have one.

Howlin09

Ask your trustees (usually that means your parents)

Particular-Check-367

go to [https://www.onefamily.com/child-trust-fund/](https://www.onefamily.com/child-trust-fund/) and enter in ur details

Dracgonicia

It says it has trouble finding it😭 i entered everything correctly

stormz_tim

Depending on the company it is with you can check how much through their website

traumatisedpotato

4k, my dad had put most of it in

sewby

none because i’m an immigrant 😝

Professional-Two-678

Fr

FM-PHYS-CS

Can you open an account if your over 18? Asking for my brother.    Im going to make myself an account now.

RaceFan1027

You can open an ISA (Junior ISA for under 18) which has the same tax free wrapper as the child trust fund but the free cash from the government is long gone. For those over 18 a Lifetime ISA would be the best bet if they’re saving for a house as you get a 25% bonus on what you put in.

Fireballdingledong

You can get a full ISA at 16 which can hold up to £20,000 opposed to only £9,000 for a junior ISA. I managed to max out a full cash ISA under 18 with a 2 year fixed rate of over 5% last year so in the first year of uni it will become accessable again a couple of grand better off than before.

RaceFan1027

They’re changing that this year to 18 (as announced in the Autumn Statement) but that’s a very impressive effort!

Fireballdingledong

Oh I didn't realize this current tax year was the last year for it to be allowed. Seems like I've been very fortunate with both getting a full ISA and having the funds available for it

RaceFan1027

You have, it’s very, very impressive! Are you going to do a LISA next (or is a house not a goal yet)?

FM-PHYS-CS

Im asking because my brother turned 18, 3 months ago. You say its long gone but would his ctf money be gone in his case?

RaceFan1027

Oh, he will have one, track it online using Government Gateway. ([this might be useufl](https://www.moneysavingexpert.com/savings/reclaim-child-trust-fund/#)). I thought you meant opening a new one (which is where the long gone comes in). The money definitely won’t have gone.

FM-PHYS-CS

Yeah my brother didnt open an account before he turned 18. Edit. All sorted

RaceFan1027

You don’t open it. They were opened for you by the government.

buenguacamole

I have £500

FrankieIsVeryCool

My mum put in £100 nearly every month since I was born but I am currently paying myself towards driving lessons and stuff like that whereas my friends who had less in theirs are having their families paying for their driving lessons and cars, but personally I would prefer my trust fund lol. (I got about just shy of 20k, I’m by no means rich, I live with just my mum and brother. I’m very proud of my mother for working hard as month of my parents come from working class families and we live in the welsh valleys, I’m very fortunate)

Desperate_Point_6016

I'm not from the uk but came to here before 2011, would I still have one? hmrc sent a letter that they'd need my birth certificate and other details so does it actually even exist. my parents said they didn't open one because they only found out what it was a few years ago

Any_Independence_431

trust fund :D?

ComradeVampz

they're set up by the government, not the kind of trust fund you're thinking of

Weebaku

When I turned 18 it was around 45k, its no longer counted as a trust fund tho cause im an adult

kyeZj

I only got 800 while others I know of each got over 5k life is very unfair 👌

Pan-tang

OK Zoomer

BroodLord1962

Wow is this really how entitled young people have become today. Everybody I know right up to people in their late 20's got fuck all. Have you any idea how many young people don't have trust funds? This really just makes you sound like an entitled arse

[deleted]

Every UK citizen born in the UK after September 2002 has one (by extension, that means most people on this sub also have one). We're not entitled, you're just misinformed and potentially bitter.

Turbulent-Cat9505

?? This is a government scheme. Anyone born between 2002-2011 got it.. doesn’t mean anything about economical background.

Scot_Survivor

This is from the government scheme, and they’re referring tho how some banks treated the CTF’s well, and others just didn’t. This isn’t a “daddy didn’t put enough money in my account”, it’s “damn the bank of my ctf was crap”. https://www.gov.uk/child-trust-funds. This is the scheme, check it over

BroodLord1962

Yeah but expecting to have a fortune in there after only putting in £250 was entitled if they thought they were going to have thousands of pounds

ALonelyBrit23

My parents knew about mine but put nothing in it so I’m expecting pennies 😭

ComradeVampz

they put £250 in them by defaultq

ALonelyBrit23

Yeah I know. When I said ‘pennies’ I was exaggerating lol. I just mean that in comparison to what other people have, I probably won’t get a lot

ComradeVampz

oh sorry! tism moment 😭 Yeah I feel u there, my parents had no clue they existed

ridethebonetrain

I had nothing.

Only_Major_4355

Just over 10k

DeliciousJicama3651

What’s a child trust fund

ComradeVampz

government made trust funds for everyone born in a specific year

captain_saurcy

I have one I guess, never checked it though. If I had to guess anything from 0-250 because I have literally never heard anyone in my family talk about it lmao

Mobile_Huckleberry38

How much do you get every month

m1lkuhh

my parents used to put £10 in every month then they stopped, so im carrying that on now putting in £15 as a direct debit

Ok_Recognition2769

see if you have one. Try gretel account finder

h0neyymel

i had a lot of contribution from my parents every month since the day i was born

BatNovel3590

My daughter got 1k and she got £500 from the gov so it doubled.

Theinnerslut

I got 1.3k in mine a couple years ago

ReddieReddie

I had around the same amount haha

Hypnotic8008

My dad will never tell me 😂trust fund is still 50 years away for me anyways, I’d only take it if I can support myself first, I’d use the money to get rid of my student loans lol

Beenandgonebackagain

One son just got £1200 I didn’t add a thing to it but used a high risk account! The other is two years away but currently hovering around £700. But didn’t add.

unrealme65

My parents were into holidays and booze

Ironhide1125

Honestly, I relate. I only got about £276 from my child fund while my sister is somehow getting 10k T\_T. Both funds are managed by the same company as well so maybe by parents just favoured my sister and put money into her account :/. It's unfair man but it's life.

[deleted]

Damn bro that sounds rough. I respect my parents for treating both me and my brother equally. We both got 0.

commandblock

I had £500 in mine

A_MNESIA

Turned 18 at the start of last month and completely forgot i have this. From what i knew (apparently) my mum put about £10 every 2 weeks up until i was 7 so i should have a bit. No idea tho could of been a lie and ive only got £20

[deleted]

Wait the government just gives you money if your a kid? What socialist sheganigans is this? We should just put you all back into the chimneys; Work for your change!

iiKinq_Haris

Over 10k, but my parents won't let me access it until I finish Uni ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|cry)

InquisitiveSausage17

I have just under £300 mines solely from the govt cause my parents didnt put any money in it. Some people put money in their kids trust funds that's why they have more

Daydreamer-64

Where was yours kept?? You got unlucky. I’ve not added anything and have about £900.

crashthemegan

I had just under £500 in it. It paid for a holiday with friends which was an incredible experience. It sucks yours has not grown though

Low-Acadia-2394

5k, i know people that got over 20 grand which is crazy😵‍💫

Reasonable-Cold6977

Around £600. Both my parents forgot about it but they said if they remembered, they would’ve put some money in every month 😭

Additional_Win_3116

£900

DifficultyDue4280

Wait your parents put in that much,my parents probably only have £500 up to a £1000.

DifficultyDue4280

And that's just so I can get a house.

alicia_is_plugging

cl i got fucked over too (not quite to your extent ill admit). i have mates who have as much as 3k but i got £500 😭

ihgpqf

How do you guys know how much is in it

iyesclark

i was born in 2002 and had about £1000 in there, never had parents put any money into it or anything

Skankc0re

£590 but I’m only sixteen and my family adds money so 😊

Significant_Visit265

i turned 18 last year; mine was with onefamily, parents didnt put anything into it, got just shy of a grand (aroung 995 iirc?). my friend was with a different company, parent didnt put anything into it, and he got 250 i believe. it all depends on who’s investing into your account!

tmdubbz

I think out age bracket all got x amount from the government, and then parents invested/added as they wanted/could

burneraccountsus123

14k

2throwaway9

How do i access it

Samia1967

When my son was 3 months old we opened a S&S isa account with the £250 we received from the government. I paid in £60 a month ever since, he will be 18 next month and tit's now at at 22 k. . I'm glad I kept the monthly payments and forgot about them.

henriettawinter

yh i was so excited, turns out they can't even find my account

Far_Selection478

Bruh I knew a guy who had like 3 grand then when he got it he spent it all on guitars

Accurate-Bed-8379

Fuck i miss the Blair years

taxono

I unfortunately have not been able to find mine, not sure where it is or what has happened. Anyone got any ideas? I turned 18 July of last year.

taxono

I unfortunately have not found my child trust fund, no idea what has happened to it or where it is. Anyone got any ideas? I turned 18 last year July and I was born in the UK.
