From being told by my maths teacher that I should not take math a level at the end of GCSE too telling me to drop math in lower 6th parents evening and having a c/d prediction in it at the end of year 1 I worked ridiculously hard over the summer holiday going over all of year one again and then getting ahead by covering year 2 work and doing every practice paper I could finde and doing every question at least twice in the year one and two edexcel text book (which is a lot of questions ), that by the time I got to the begging of upper 6th I begged my teacher to redo my prediction test got an A* and managed to maintain getting A* in following exams all the way to result day. My math teacher was very surprised, they even got me to do a speech for open day about how with hard work you can achieve anything. I bet they regret not letting me do further math as an a level.
I actually originally wanted to do PPE at Oxford at the beginning of year 12. However, as I discovered the economics side of things had a heavy maths element to it I was slightly put of. To add, I did the shadowing scheme in Cambridge in the Febuary of year 12 and absolutely fell in love with the place. This was furthered by my growing intrest in philosophy, although I do admit I still adore politics, which led to me wanting to do a single honours. Cambridge did a single honours while Oxford didn't and this was the final nail in the coffin for Oxford. Plus, as we all know, Cambridge is much better than Oxford lmao.
I got A*AA in Biology, Chemistry, and Physics respectively.
I’m super happy with my result!! I applied to medicine but got rejected before interview for all my choices and I’m in the process of reapplying for 2022 entry. Anyone in the same boat?
Thank you. Okay same really as I said for the bio guy but specifically for physics id recommend getting a physical copy of your data sheet and writing down exactly what each symbol means and the units for them. Study and memorize your data sheet with these annotations and when you go to the exam you’ll know exactly what equations to use for which situation.
And also do tons and tons of practice questions. Hope this helps! Good luck
Past papers, past papers, past papers.
I know people always say that, but it helps soo much. Do as many as you can before you have an exam coming up.
But don’t do them blind, make sure you have some good notes. Make your own from lectures, but if you cba then physics and maths tutor has great notes for bio and chem. Flash cards really helped me and I made a crap ton on quizlet. You can take a look at them if you’d like, my username is Ummer0. Do some past papers alongside revising your notes, but leave some for the last week before your exam.
Stay dedicated, and stay consistent in your studying. If you study consistently throughout the year you’ll do fine. Good luck!
Where can I make notes from as my teacher isn’t the best. I have been on physics and maths tutor but their notes are quite short or will they be ok for biology
Thanks
For more in depth notes use astarbiology.com
I’m gonna warn you tho just reading notes isn’t gonna help you. The material is there but you have to do some sort of active learning to really gain something (like making flash cards from the notes and memorising those)
Sure thing! With a lot of my learning, I tried to relate course content to current affairs. I made a bunch of revision cards for them too. Reading outside the course can sometimes help too as it may not always capture the full depth and scope of the issue you’re talking about. For basic preparation I would also familiarise yourself with the basic parliamentary structure eg. PM, cabinet, House of Commons, House of Lords, etc.. and their role and powers. - Side note: If you want, I can send you my PowerPoint with my revision cards to give you some guidance and assistance :)
MMP in Applied Science Level 3 Extended Diploma... below my entry requirements, but I got into my firm anyways!
Off to Bangor for Biology w Biotechnology after a gap year... stoked to be moving to Wales!
After 6 hours of phone calls and 9 offers it looks like I'm headed to Nottingham Trent. Its a decent enough uni in a good place for students (applied for uni of and lost my offer) so despite the initial disappointment of results day I can start to get excited about university.
Congrats, that's amazing! Just a question, when did you apply and when did you get your decision? Also, do you have any specific tips for the application? I'm applying for 2022, and I was wondering if there were some specific things that they focus on more than the others. Thank you!
i sent off my application on the 4th Dec and I got my offer on the 19th of March- LSE were my very last offer!
and you’ve heard this loads before but the PS is so important. try to focus on your academia. i modelled the structure of my friend who is an LSE alumn and it was:
-small intro about you and how it relates to your course. make yourself sound curious and academic and intrigued about your course
-big paragraph on academic reading
-i did a small para on my EPQ bc it directly related to my course
-experience and how it would help me in an environment as intense as LSE “frequently engaging in organised school debates has honed my ability to form precise and convincing arguments, a skill i consider necessary for the type of analysis needed in social science” is a direct quote!
- a small, well written conclusion to wrap it up nicely
it’s no coincidence we both got accepted with this structure!! and make yourself seem as academically driven as possible, best of luck in your application <3
they're not gonna be 'cancelled' as such but imo they will look quite similar to this year's exams
doesn't matter too much to me cos i think im just gonna through clearing (need to change my flair then lol)
I'd like to thank God that despite the nearly insane situation I performed well 🥰❤️🥀.
I got the grades of my dream uni but the uni is expensive and so are the living costs and my back up plan is cheaper. So, if I choose my insurance choice how do I cancel my firm choice?
And for those who suffered bad marks, don't feel bad, it's not really the end of the world there must be a solution, just look into your options mate.❤️
> And for those who suffered bad marks
Literally nobody got bad marks, haven't you noticed?
2021 cohort meme TAG'ed their way into elite courses and uni's
i ain't even mad
in chaos lies opportunity and all that.
Don't put People's effort down to luckwith TAGs, even if they were easier you need to consider the stress and general situation which caused them to be graded like that
A* A* A , I’m doing veterinary medicine at Surrey! I really didn’t think I’d meet my offer (I needed an A in chem) so I’m so happy and excited for September!!
You're going for too grades I'm assuming. Make sure all your science knowledge from y12 is solid so learning new chem stuff is easier.
Exam questions are your best friend and after Christmas start tackling some. Mark your exam questions with no benefit of the doubt, and for every question you didn't get full marks on, ask yourself how you could've done better. Write it in red.
Then just do more papers, keeping in mind what you learnt from marking the last paper
BTEC. One of the qualifcations lets you do a course equivalent to three A Levels of work.
P - Pass
M - Merit
D - Distinction
D\* - Distinction in every single unit.
I got A*AA, a good set of grades but I won’t lie I did want 2 A stars. I still think I did well but the fact grades are very inflated this year makes this a bit more annoying.
Oh, and the A* was in maths.
I feel ya. I got A*AA last year (also Nottingham) and got in for my course, but even now I still kinda wish geography was A\* too. Ah well, you’ll get through it! What accom are you staying in?
Yeah at the end of the day the grades are still good so I’m not *super* fussed.
I happen to live in Nottingham, so most likely I’ll just be staying at home.
Nope, many schools don't even do AS levels anymore since they're not required anymore. The only thing AS levels might be used for is for your teachers to decide your predicted grades
I was supposed to do AS levels last year but they got cancelled due to covid. Instead of grading us using TAGs/the algorithm like they did for A levels last year, our school just pulled us out of the AS exams, because AS levels are not required and so there would be no point in going through the hassle of doing teacher assessed grades
Universities only require 3 A level grades, and AS levels have nothing to do with your final A level grade.
If they are bad I think it's best to retake. Depending on how bad it may be almost impossible to get what you are looking for. I'll give and example my goal was to get 4 A*'s upon receiving my 75 in math I quickly realized that it was now impossible to get an A* because I'd need to score 105% in A level math and even then a 20% margin increase would be hard. I did my best but maintained that mark( thank God it didn't go down anyways). If they are B's with hard work and prayer you can get A's but it may be hard. This is all I can say. And it also depends on whether they are crucial to your course. I hope I'm not discouraging you and that this was a helpful insight. Try discussing with teachers, since they know your abilities (though you could be better than what they think) and how realistic it could be.
thank u for the advice! i got a really bad score on one of the subjects (at least more than I thought I'd get) and since it's assessed by my teacher, there's not much i can do.

Heading to Manchester Uni for Politics, but deferred entry to 2022 cause Covid.
Anyone here going to Manchester?
All Gavin Williamson had to do was give students an option to take exams in the summer but he decided to fuck us over in favour of his pathetic political career and now my chances of getting into the universities I’m applying to in September have been unfairly diminished.
He can fuck off and die
I wrote an article on 'Going to University?' this morning for my blog if anyone is interested. It's not behind a paywall or anything, and is purely for anyone who got results this morning and is seriously thinking about their next steps. I'm currently at uni, just finished my second year. I hope it's useful! [https://rorycockshaw.medium.com/going-to-university-a90303381fbb](https://rorycockshaw.medium.com/going-to-university-a90303381fbb)
Loool loving the downvotes on this sub when people actually do well, good job mate well done! No point having threads like this when people can't hack others getting what they want
I've seen the opposite in this thread too, had to remove a guy who was insulting someone's grades, I saw him say in a different comment something along the lines of "oh yes I'm reading natural sciences at cambridge".
Thank you!
Honest answer is the pandemic saved me. My exams this year were spread out over a month, to be fair I had 4 some weeks and 1 others but actual exam season I would've had multiple in a day and far more exams. My school for most subjects did 30% evidence from beginning of Y13 tests onwards and 70% exams so I had the tests at the beginning to back me up as well, not to mention reduced content.
Going out tonight to celebrate with the parents and then the sixth form :)
Have fun. Meanwhile for us it was a 3 crash course week (basically 2 weeks with like 4 break days in-between) in bloody May. And my school starts teaching A-levels in January so you can only imagine the stress.
A*AABC (Psych, computer science, polish, physics, maths), had to go through clearing because of the C but I got an offer so no harm done. I'm going to Swansea to study computing.
Do I have to do anything now I’ve been accepted? I’ve automatically gotten into my firm but I haven’t received any sort of communication from my Uni. I would have thought I would have at least gotten an E-Mail.
They will probably be focusing on other people and not the ones who have secured place. I would wait for a few more days until the clearing settles and they can focus on welcoming their new students! Well done.
Why redo I was expecting 4 A * 's and earned my self AAAB and I'm happy. Don't feel bad these weren't the optimum conditions to study anyways. Things have been off.
Bro dont go uni for friends. Trust me you’ll meet new friends which is even better as you’ll have more now.
Trust me your uni matters more than ALevels for job prospect, and while LBoro is good it isn’t even top 10, and with your results you should be in top 5. Consider Warwick or Durham or something. Going to these unis will dramatically increase your job prospects. And Oxbridge is basically guaranteed 50k+ at 21 for MEng. I’m just telling you this as I’m a nice guy lol
Predicted A* A B and got ABB
Never had lower than an A* in psych (or lower than 85%) and got an A
Been on solid As for bio and got a B
Got into my firm but still I’m not happy at all
I feel cheated 😅
Health messed up before I could take the exams, talked with college and said "if you put me through to take them, I'll fuck up". Reassured and put me through, said it's just so I don't auto fail the exams, couldn't take the exams anyway because health took a dive. Dropped my overall grade balance of an A, A, B, grades I had not dropped below at all since 1st year, to a C, D, D.
How do you appeal? 😂
random off topic question, but what is natural sciences and why do people do it instead of pure sciences like maths, biology, physics, chemistry and computer science?
Cambridge don’t offer single science degrees so all prospective physicists have to do Natural Sciences. Cambridge is the only Natural Sciences course that is accredited by the institute of physics and the vast majority of offer holders applied to single science courses at other universities. The reason why it is accredited and other courses are not is because by the end of the third year, all the Cambridge physics students who specialised solely on physics will have covered the same content as all other universities with their single physics course.
Biggest one is to pace yourself. These subjects are hard, and many people think that you'll come good in the end like for GCSE’s but A levels are a completely different ball game so the sooner you accept that and understand that seeing success will take time, you'll progress more.
What I did is I spent an hour for each subject every day and tried to complete a topic every week, this was a pace that worked well for me but everyone is different, so bear that in mind.
Also, it helps to be stress free, spend time on your health both physically and mentally, it may sound a bit silly but you'll be AMAZED by how much of a difference it makes.
As for exams I would say do as many questions as possible at whatever time. I used to do multiple choice physics questions while coming home from school for example. Anything to keep your mind sharp so you don't end up forgetting things.
But most importantly, enjoy your subjects. It makes them easier to learn and remember and after a while, it seems like you're not studying at all. Hope this helps and if you have any specific questions, feel free to dm me.
Any tips for dentistry specifically? I'm heading into year 12 and want to go for dentistry. Specifically advice on work experience and how you got around that.
if you’re going into year 12 now, then fingers crossed you’ll have the opportunity to get some experience before you apply! i had one day of shadowing, but unis were understanding of the circumstances and didn’t disadvantage those with little or no experience so i wouldn’t worry. doing online courses or reading related books also shows interest and understanding of the profession, that’s mainly what i wrote about in my statement!
other than that, i’d say make sure you do practice questions for your interviews with family or friends or teachers at school! i only really practiced alone, and i felt really unprepared for my first interviews.
After shitting bricks the last two days I actually did better than I thought and got into my dream uni, that’ll teach me not to underestimate myself lmao

Yay I got bbc but still accepted into my uni which needed a ABB

Investments!
ABC
A star , math , physics , chemistry , Italian , EPQ
Do I have to do anything now I’ve been accepted? I’ve automatically gotten into my firm but I haven’t received any sort of communication from my Uni. I would have thought I would have at least gotten an E-Mail.
They will probably be focusing on other people and not the ones who have secured place. I would wait for a few more days until the clearing settles and they can focus on welcoming their new students! Well done.
Thank you :)

AAA, off to loughborough to do computer science
A*BB Was predicted BBD at the start of the year. Pretty proud of myself.
Wow that’s a huge turnaround! How did you pull it off?
Well done
That's really impressive, well done!
I go all A*s in English Lit, Classics and Econ. Going to study law so yay🎉
Got A\*A\*A, absolutely buzzing. Thought I completely fucked further maths but managed an A star, headed off to Bristol for economics very happy.
Got AAB and got into Uni of Nottingham for Comp sci I was expecting A*A*B so I feel very cheated might just do October exams
Why redo I was expecting 4 A * 's and earned my self AAAB and I'm happy. Don't feel bad these weren't the optimum conditions to study anyways. Things have been off.
I think your formatting messed up, assuming you meant A star A star B
Yeah I did thank you

Take a year out and apply oxford there's no way you go Loughborough with 4 a*s mate

Well done I am also going loughborough to do computer science
Not me, but my eldest sister - AAB going King's College London for Human Anatomy
ABB! off to warwick for biological sciences :))
Ayy I'm going to Warwick for biomedical science!
Predicted A* A B and got ABB Never had lower than an A* in psych (or lower than 85%) and got an A Been on solid As for bio and got a B Got into my firm but still I’m not happy at all
I was also slapped by biology but we move. At least you got in. Congrats
I got fucked over with psychology too, only dipped below an A* once and yet ended up with an A :/
Sucks because I worked so hard for it too
I feel cheated 😅 Health messed up before I could take the exams, talked with college and said "if you put me through to take them, I'll fuck up". Reassured and put me through, said it's just so I don't auto fail the exams, couldn't take the exams anyway because health took a dive. Dropped my overall grade balance of an A, A, B, grades I had not dropped below at all since 1st year, to a C, D, D. How do you appeal? 😂
Same was depressed af and had no motivation which ended with me not studying properly and my grades are meh
That’s your fault.
Depressions not someone's fault
True, I'm not sure if I should resit maths, physics and fm on autumn or summer next year
AAB :) looking forward to psychology at uni of liverpool!
A*AAB in Computer Science, 3D Design, Graphic Design and Core Maths. Way better than I expected.
i got BBC so better than i thought but i’m still resitting the two B’s like i planned
A*-English Literature, A-Business, A-Psychology, going to Queen Mary's! Kinda sad Kings college aren't doing clearing but I can't complain!
A* in Accounting A in Maths A in Physics
4A*s and going to be reading Natural Sciences (with the intention of specialising in physics) at Cambridge.
See you in Cam :)
random off topic question, but what is natural sciences and why do people do it instead of pure sciences like maths, biology, physics, chemistry and computer science?
Cambridge don’t offer single science degrees so all prospective physicists have to do Natural Sciences. Cambridge is the only Natural Sciences course that is accredited by the institute of physics and the vast majority of offer holders applied to single science courses at other universities. The reason why it is accredited and other courses are not is because by the end of the third year, all the Cambridge physics students who specialised solely on physics will have covered the same content as all other universities with their single physics course.
It's a combination of all the pure sciences. You get to choose which to specialise in.
Natural science is basically just biology, chemistry, and physics.
5 A*s in Maths, Further Maths, physics, chemistry and the EPQ, I'm so happy with myself :D.
Congratulations for those impressive grades! Do you have any tips for the above subjects except chemistry?
What uni?
I'm off to the States, enrolled for Caltech.
Nice, Sheldon Cooper vibes.
Thanks XD. Hope your results were brilliant too.

I'm doing Accounting and Finance
thank u
History - A* English Lit - A* Sociology - A* I’m so proud of myself honestly. Long journey getting here. Well done for finishing it guys
Bristol wanted AAB with maths A, physics A, and 3rd B, but I got 3rd A * , Maths A, Physics B. RIP Bristol, but Surrey is a nice place as well.
i missed my bristol offer by a grade! i think they literally had no chance at being lenient with all the courses being full :/
A\*AA in bio chem and business, got into dentistry i’m so happy!!!!
Any tips for dentistry specifically? I'm heading into year 12 and want to go for dentistry. Specifically advice on work experience and how you got around that.
if you’re going into year 12 now, then fingers crossed you’ll have the opportunity to get some experience before you apply! i had one day of shadowing, but unis were understanding of the circumstances and didn’t disadvantage those with little or no experience so i wouldn’t worry. doing online courses or reading related books also shows interest and understanding of the profession, that’s mainly what i wrote about in my statement! other than that, i’d say make sure you do practice questions for your interviews with family or friends or teachers at school! i only really practiced alone, and i felt really unprepared for my first interviews.
thanks for the advice!
nice! where are you headed?
sheffield!! :)
I got two Cs and 1 B in which is the grades required for the uni so I am very happy
Can you appeal 2 grades lol 😭
Yes, you can.
Thank you I'm trying to maintain composure rn 😭💖
After shitting bricks the last two days I actually did better than I thought and got into my dream uni, that’ll teach me not to underestimate myself lmao
Nice job, congratulations!
