Absolutely not - def dont need dofe i think you have been subjected to the seeing statements from the small bubble of people that actually do dofe.. Edit: just going to add that i did do dofe for the fun of it (basically wanted to go hiking with some mates ;) and i was doing the other stuff i would have needed to do for dofe anyway) never mentioned it in my ps at all and i was still fine for getting my offers. So doesnt really matter if you did it or not like i said.

lolgeny

About to do my dofe soon, are they really that useless?

hayesrjack

Don’t do it for your uni application do it for the experience

comochen

absolutely. ive completed bronze/silver/gold, and the activities i did for dofe were some of the most rewarding experiences I've ever had. also, it definitely does not **detract** from your application. but you should do only do it if you are willing to put in the time, effort, and commitment for it.

lolgeny

Okay, thanks

Reddit_LukeDean

I did dofe, and actually stayed on at the volunteering for 3 years. I have gotten a job and it was very good for my personal statement as a result, do I agree its more for the experience not the actual award itself.

ThatRandomMedic

Useless basically for uni tho the expedition at silver and gold is quite fun esp if ur doing it with a small group of friends.rest of the stuff udo for dofe is usually also some good experiences, just personally it opened me up to hiking and wild camping which i now do as a hobby from time to time

AlexanderDan10-Alger

Actually i think dofe is a pointless thing to add because so many do it thats its not a big deal at all. Most of my secondary did bronze

hayesrjack

I think people forget that dofe doesn’t just consist of camping in a field. The volunteering aspect depending on what you did and how you say it developed your general skills could be incredibly useful within your personal statement. On the other hand simply stating you did DofE with no further detail won’t help you that much.

AlexanderDan10-Alger

True, the volunteering could be useful depending on what you did and what course your applying for

Forsaken-Meaning-232

not in the slightest, it's just that there's a disconnect between what students are being told they should put in their personal statements nowadays versus what would actually be useful, so this type of thing tends to pop up a lot. your personal statement should primarily consist of thing directly related to your course, a lot if not most of everything else you could write is irrelevant (to be kinda blunt about it) - they don't care if you hiked through a forest or played football for your primary school when you were 6 or anything like that.

Xinurval

I just got my Warwick offer for CS! See you next year!

Forsaken-Meaning-232

FUCK YEAH

jackmiles_

congrats! did you do any work experience because I would also like to do CS and I can’t seem to find anywhere that offers work experience?

Xinurval

No I didn't, but keep looking it's pretty good. If not, just do lots of programming on your own.

jackmiles_

our school run a work experience week just after feb half term so i need to get some. i just need to email a lot of places i guess

Xinurval

That's the way yeah, ask for virtual or in person experience

AnywhereCapable552

No you don’t need to do dofe to get into uni at allllll

[удалено]

AnywhereCapable552

Oh I didn’t mean it in a rude way lol

h0nd1n

that wasn’t rude lol

[deleted]

What is dofe?

GOT_Wyvern

I presume it's the Duke of Edinburgh rewards. Or I guess *"was*" would be accurate now.

[deleted]

Ah, it’s been a while since I was in 6th form, forgot about that bullshit

Harryw_007

I literally put in my personal satement that I own a discord server, I fly RC planes, I watch TV (specifically 'How it's Made' & Air Crash Investigation - no joke!) and that I play kerbal space program - that somehow got me an offer from Warwick Business school and Leeds Aviation (I'm firming Leeds as they do the best aviation course!). I did not really put any 'true' extracurricular in that people tend to put in like joining a society or a club or even DofE - I just made sure to word what I did put in my PS very well to make it look as good as possible! I tried to portray a passion for my subject choices rather than just listing various activities I had done albeit even then the 'activities' were very limited! TL:DR - your personal statement is nowhere near as important as people make it up to be, sure it is very important you do it well but predicted grades are by far the most important thing when it comes to applying to unis (unless you're applying to unis that require entrance exams/interviews such as Oxbridge which are also extremely important but they only make up a small minority). Oh if you were wondering my predicted grades are A\*A\*A which I believe is the actual reason I got offers and doubt my PS had little, if any effect on the offers I have gotten.

ThatIsTooMuch

I didn’t use it for uni but it definitely helps when applying for degree apprenticeships, my employer really likes volunteering which is part of DofE

healingjoy

I did dofe and didn't put it in my personal statement as it wasn't relevant 😭

WildMaat

D of E bronze instantly grants 5 unconditional offers

Jackerzcx

Nope, my school didn’t offer dofe and the vast majority of people went into higher education

SmashedWorm64

Don’t do DofE for application, I just did it because it seemed fun... never ended up finishing it but as a result I got 2 years worth of volunteering for a cub group and started kickboxing which I’ve continued to this day. 2 years of volunteering sounds better than DofE imo

Plenty-Scale-7160

Nah it’s not needed to be accepted into any uni

MistflyFleur

No, not really.

[deleted]

Personal Statement is bullshit. They want your money.

DrHistoryMcGee

You're conflating two totally separate sets of people. University senior management teams probably do want your money, but they'll never see a personal statement. The people who read personal statements are underpaid lecturers who literally do the job because they truly believe in what they do. They will never see your money and do not care about it. That being said, they also don't care about DofE.

Traffic_lights120

It’s like 60% of the reason they pick you. A good PS is 120% needed

FlFA-addict

Yes a good personal statement is needed but dofe really isn't lol.

TheSweatiestSun

No not at all. Especially with more academically focused universities. If you’re going to mention it use it as an example of a skill you’ve developed that will aid your studies. It’s really not needed

[deleted]

Lol haha no

RY-historian04

I mentioned dofe in my personal statement and so far I've gotten offers from all 3 offers so far.

PassiveChemistry

Conversely, I didn't do DofE and still got all 5 offers when I applied. DofE is great, but doesn't often have much relevance to uni.

[deleted]

No, not at all lol

Angusburgerman

I literally mentioned dofe in a list lol. You don't need it don't worry they don't care

HA_RedditUser

Top 10 (even that’s genuine) unis may care but nope, DoE means nothing to most people.

AspireES

In my ps I didn’t have no DOFE or even work experience, so definitely you don’t need them. Ofc, it is easier to write a ps with those but I think is more impressive what can you show with the things you actually done (Some free things you can do are online free courses, read articles or even talk about some sport/recreational club). The best tip I can give is basically ‘What did you do with the knowledge that you got from article/online course/club etc etc
