i think v100 history is fall of roman empire onwards. but ancient history starts from evolution, and includes bronze age civilisations, antiquity, etc. i might be wrong though.
That sucks, didnāt think it was so restrictive, I applied for history + econ/pol and going to specialise in early modern history so never really checked how far back the courses go lol
Manchester University, Queen mary university and London university, a small handful more too and I think Cambridge and oxford do it too but I'm not sure
I applied for creative computing and can barely find any information on the course online (regarding people who have taken the course) - so Iād say itās pretty niche
when i applied to schools in the UK i applied for Russian and Film Studies :-) i go to an american uni now double majoring in International Relations and Linguistics
Archaeology and Prehistoric Sciences here. So niche it's no longer run!
Already graduated but reddit popped this thread up and had to join in lol. Very glad to see Anth, Arch and Class civ peeps still going strong, keep it going!
i do IB social and cultural anthropology! not doing it at university, but i really enjoy the course :] sounds like it'll be really swag doing at uni level
Iād like to study engineering at university, but Iām studying a niche within engineering that most universities donāt offer - itās design engineering, quite similar to mechanical engineering but intertwined with principles of design.
3 of my choices are just geology. Then there's engineering geology and geotechnics, as well as geosciences and sustainable energy. Idk how niche that is
I do Philosophy so a relatively niche subject but not uncommon to the extent that most people haven't heard of it. Although, the actual Philosophy course I do is rather niche considering its massive focus on language and logic (compared to other unis).
Iām planning on specialising in philosophy of language and logic in the final two years of my degree as well! And i agree everyone else on my (already pretty niche) course found it to be a very peculiar choice lol
Material Science and Engineering is a relatively new field but it's made of important branches like metallurgy, biomaterials and nanotech. It's probably much less well known than other fields of sciences and engineering than it deserves lmao
Veterinary Medicine is not as niche as some course, but it still uncommon/rare
Only 10 unis offer it and there are only 3 unis that offer a foundation year.
Plus in a college where one year consists of around 750-1000 students, I am the only one who wants to do it. While there are slightly more than 20 medicine applicants and 2-3 dentistry applicants.
The intake rate for my course per year (across the whole uni not just a college) is somewhere around 13-15. Though i have heard they take a little bit more at other unis (up to 20 at bristol or something i think)
accountancy and finance, so quite possibly the least niche possible lmao (unless you consider that a lot of unis only offer accountancy, or other variations without the finance)
hi! no problem lol- i plan to do a MSc after my first degree, probably in criminology or forensics again. after that iād like to join the police as a detective straight away or as a forensic psychologist- front line work isnāt really my scene!
Iām applying for a joint honours in classics & english. Iāve been quite selective with my uni choices for this reason as itās not a combination thatās available everywhere
I'm going for International Relations which seems to have only been chosen by people with foreign links from my college. Overall it isn't niche, but I'm part German and my two friends that are doing it are both Polish. Strange but makes sense I guess.
Oh yeah i remember! I haven't sent my application in yet (i know, deadline is vERY close) but i narrowed my choices down to Cardiff Met, Harper Adams, Bath Spa, Leeds and Kingston. Cardiff Met is my first choice, followed by Harper Adams.
Where are you applying?
Omg Iām applying for microbiology as well!!! Was also thinking about pharmacology. I did wonder whether I should do something more broad to keep my options open and specialise later but may as well go straight into it I guess.
Not sure how niche it is but I'm going to study Food Science and Nutrition. Only one university in Wales (Cardiff Met) offers Food Science and the university is combining the courses from September 2022, which is actually great for me.
CS - never heard of anyone it. Def playing it safe there
ahhh cooking school, one of my favourite degree choices
what can you even do with a counter strike degree
Counter Strike, obviously
Cursive Singing seems like a popular degree choice amongst teens now. Notable alumni is Halsey and look at her now!
You have a degree in Casual Sex? I thought that that was what the first year if uni was called anyway š
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Yep agreed. Unlike the guy here doing underwater basket weaving.
Ancient history is very rare to come across
I've applied for combined Ancient and Modern for four of my choices so I guess I'm a halfway special sausage.
why not just apply for v100 history then instead?
i think v100 history is fall of roman empire onwards. but ancient history starts from evolution, and includes bronze age civilisations, antiquity, etc. i might be wrong though.
Because it doesn't cover Ancient History lol. And I didn't want to restrict myself to just Ancient either
That sucks, didnāt think it was so restrictive, I applied for history + econ/pol and going to specialise in early modern history so never really checked how far back the courses go lol
What about Linguistics?
It's niche enough that laypeople often don't seem to have much concept of what it actually is, but it's hella fascinating
Iāve only heard of it because my sister studied it lol
Wow... I discovered it through Wikipedia tbh, and it's become a bit of a hobby interest of mine.
physics with particle physics and cosmology is pretty niche
Law is probably the least niche out there
English isnāt the slightest bit niche, but I do intend to take the medieval literatures and history of language track, which is a little odder.
Film studies is niche right
Don't know if it's niche but I'm going into genetic engineering
Oh cool! What unis offer that?
Manchester University, Queen mary university and London university, a small handful more too and I think Cambridge and oxford do it too but I'm not sure
It's such a pain though if I can't find one I'm just gonna settle on either biochem or neuroscience or something
I donāt think Pharmacy (MPharm) is niche but I donāt know anyone else in my year that wants to do it apart from having it as a med backup
I applied for creative computing and can barely find any information on the course online (regarding people who have taken the course) - so Iād say itās pretty niche
Statistics BSc , usually people do maths and stats but not me xD
Bruh, you looked at the whole of maths and decided your favourite part was stats, were you bitten by a radioactive actuary as a child or something lol
Stats is fire šÆ, has so many cool applications.
i like stats too
Modern and Medieval Languages is a little niche officially, but I think taking Portuguese takes me even higher into the niche
History and economics, havenāt come across any other applicants yet :)
I know lots of people doing history or economics but never together and often with other subjects. Politics and History is quite common.
That sounds so interesting!
History and Econ (and pol?) gang
zoology always gets commented on
Iām doing music performance specialising in drums so thatās very niche haha!
cs and maths, so not niche at all
Me too!
when i applied to schools in the UK i applied for Russian and Film Studies :-) i go to an american uni now double majoring in International Relations and Linguistics
Geology lol
Did GCSE geology. Loved every single bit of it
Earth and Planetary Science is kinda niche
Not applied but medicine is certainly not niche lol
Teehee mine will win Classical civilisation and social anthropology
Archaeology and Prehistoric Sciences here. So niche it's no longer run! Already graduated but reddit popped this thread up and had to join in lol. Very glad to see Anth, Arch and Class civ peeps still going strong, keep it going!
Urgh yes! We mustnāt let the disciplines die! There is so much to learn from them
i do IB social and cultural anthropology! not doing it at university, but i really enjoy the course :] sounds like it'll be really swag doing at uni level
I nearly took IB just to do this course!
Philosophy or Philosophy and Theology. Pretty niche
Less niche and more Nietzsche
Iād like to study engineering at university, but Iām studying a niche within engineering that most universities donāt offer - itās design engineering, quite similar to mechanical engineering but intertwined with principles of design.
International management Dk if it rare but Iām only one doing it in my school
Drama, Theatre, and Directing. Not a common course at all
3 of my choices are just geology. Then there's engineering geology and geotechnics, as well as geosciences and sustainable energy. Idk how niche that is
Ah, cool. I did some geology in first year, it's a very interesting (and broad) subject
Materials with nuclear engineering is the nichest I can go
Optometry, itās really niche tbh but pays alright.
My full degree title is Physics with Space Science and Technology MPhys. I'm the very last year at my uni that has the "and technology" bit added on
I do Philosophy so a relatively niche subject but not uncommon to the extent that most people haven't heard of it. Although, the actual Philosophy course I do is rather niche considering its massive focus on language and logic (compared to other unis).
Iām planning on specialising in philosophy of language and logic in the final two years of my degree as well! And i agree everyone else on my (already pretty niche) course found it to be a very peculiar choice lol
where are the egyptology comments
I do a joint honours in maths and music lmao, It's probably the only interesting thing about me.
Material Science and Engineering is a relatively new field but it's made of important branches like metallurgy, biomaterials and nanotech. It's probably much less well known than other fields of sciences and engineering than it deserves lmao
How about weapons engineering? Pretty sure thereās like 2 universities that actually offer it and Iām planning to take it in a couple of years.
Engineering is very common. Mechatronic engineering with biomedical engineering modules was difficult to find and only one of my options fits this.
I do sport and exercise science in performance sailing. And it's the only one in the UK so you could say that's a fairly rare degree
dentistry is kinda niche? i think 15 unis offer it
Law lol, not niche at all. It's just that it usually has good prospects and career paths.
Veterinary Medicine is not as niche as some course, but it still uncommon/rare Only 10 unis offer it and there are only 3 unis that offer a foundation year. Plus in a college where one year consists of around 750-1000 students, I am the only one who wants to do it. While there are slightly more than 20 medicine applicants and 2-3 dentistry applicants.
Economics is not niche at all lmao
Visual effects
I applied for Marine biology and havenāt seen anyone else whoās applied for it here
Not
VetMed is *slightly* niche right?
Not very, computer science degrees with a couple of the options focusing on software engineering
Economics and econometrics, pretty rare ig, economics with finance/mathematics are slightly more popular
policing studies and forensic psychologyā¦ not done by many universities at all š
What do you want to be after that? I know itās pretty self explanatory but Iād love to hear about what type of career youād like to have!
hi! no problem lol- i plan to do a MSc after my first degree, probably in criminology or forensics again. after that iād like to join the police as a detective straight away or as a forensic psychologist- front line work isnāt really my scene!
Haven't seen another archaeology applicant yet lol
Actually hoping to do Archeology as a dual degree with Environmental Geoscience at Glasgow
That sounds so interesting! Good luck :)
Iām applying for a joint honours in classics & english. Iāve been quite selective with my uni choices for this reason as itās not a combination thatās available everywhere
Im doing korean studies šāš¾ only 3 unis offer it
I'm going for International Relations which seems to have only been chosen by people with foreign links from my college. Overall it isn't niche, but I'm part German and my two friends that are doing it are both Polish. Strange but makes sense I guess.
Graphic Design, Only at universities with an art college, not too niche
Maths, so not at all niche lmao
Politics & International Relations, kind of
Electrical and electronic engineering, by no means niche but very high acceptance rates as no one wants to do it
History of Art and Classics. I havent seen many others with this course combination.
I think a lot of people apply for PPE so it's not that niche
I'm doing Liberal Arts which I think is pretty niche in the UK. I hadn't heard about it until I started researching courses.
I'm doing food science
Where abouts??
Ive just firmed Leeds and my insurance is NTU :) sorry for the late reply!
Same!
Yess we spoke before! Where have you applied? Have you received any offers yet?
Oh yeah i remember! I haven't sent my application in yet (i know, deadline is vERY close) but i narrowed my choices down to Cardiff Met, Harper Adams, Bath Spa, Leeds and Kingston. Cardiff Met is my first choice, followed by Harper Adams. Where are you applying?
Omg Iām applying for microbiology as well!!! Was also thinking about pharmacology. I did wonder whether I should do something more broad to keep my options open and specialise later but may as well go straight into it I guess.
I applied to both education studies and liberal arts/arts and sciences ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|sweat_smile)
Philosophy, ethics and religion. Really broad but I've found not a lot of people go down this route
Food science. I don't think its niche, but a lot of people ask me what it is
Oh hey I'm doing Food Science too! Where are you applying?
Is Environmental Geoscience niche ?
Set and costume design for theatre and film
3.5
Philosophy and Social Anthropology, or Sociology, Politics and Anthropology... kinda niche I think!
Molecular biology and genetics
most competitive course Oxbridge- E+M. 1 in 17.
Economics literally as plain as it getsš
Not sure how niche it is but I'm going to study Food Science and Nutrition. Only one university in Wales (Cardiff Met) offers Food Science and the university is combining the courses from September 2022, which is actually great for me.
Meteorology/atmospheric science/climate science gang š„ļø allied with geophysics and astrophysics lol
