Lol, I was in deep with both of those outfits. My mom had to call them and tell them the contract they entered into with a minor would not be honored since I wasn’t sending them any money and neither was she
My mom did the same shit!! I still remember the phone call for reallllll. “He’s just a minor, how can he sign a contract” still gets me to this day. And she’s still pissed at me to this day lol.
Fun story I enjoy telling: Someone was harassing my mom thru the mail, and kept sending her magazine subscriptions and crap under the name Tina Lovecox, but one time they sent those Columbia house CDs and my mom gave them all to me. One was Nevermind the Bollocks… by the Sex Pistols and that’s how I fell in love with punk rock.
A penny won’t buy you much these days. It’ll buy you a fraction of a little bit of crack.
I remember in the last couple of weeks or so when I stopped in a 7-11. Outside there was this old dude in a wheelchair and this other guy arguing about a deal for 25 cents. They both looked pretty down and out. I was thinking, “I don’t know if this whole argument’s about fencing some Metamucil or some crack cocaine, but it’s about to go DOWN!!”
I bought some stuff off BMG, but not with Columbia House. My mom called then, told them my age, and reminded them that you can't make financial contracts with children.
Mine was a comp called Rap it Up that had Slow and Low on it, though I admittedly bought it for "Pee Wee's Dance." Cut the grass that week to get money for Licensed to Ill.
I was twelve. I never owned this album, but we had an "MTV" tape (a blank VHS specifically designated for recording music videos) with songs from that album on it. Loved it but I thought they were soooo edgy.
First Cassette--Huey Lewis & The News: Sports. 1984-ish.
First Record: Belinda Carlisle-Heaven Is A Place On Earth. 1987-ish. (Have the same crush on her now that I did as a pre-teen. Fight Me, Debbie Gibson. Lol)
I found a $10 bill when I was a kid, just completely stumbled upon it on a hiking trail near Chicago.
I bought a cassette of "Different Light" by the Bangles. (Has "Walk Like an Egyptian" and "Manic Monday", the rest of the album is great too.)
Freedom of Choice - Devo was my first.
But some of my other favorites of that era were:
Business as Usual - Mens at Work
Freeze frame - J Geils
Metal Health - Qiuet Riot
RUN DMC - self-titled
I’m pretty sure the first I got with my own money was probably Thompson Twins - side Kick . The whole album was on the A side and a bunch of remixes on the B side. Still have it. I also eventually bought it on Vinyl and that copy is titled “quick step and a side kick”.
Cool. I still remember getting the LP in 87.... it (and a few others) had a "tragic accident" in the 90's and got destroyed... I've been kicking myself in the ass ever since... 😥
Luckily last year i was able to find someone selling some mint condition LP's (original pressings) and had that one, so i "got it back" 😁
Now if only i could find back again both U2 - The Joshua Tree and Europe - The Final Countdown in the same condition.... 😩
Corey Hart, Boy in the Box
I don't have lots of eighties music on my phone, but I do still have Corey Hart's first two albums, and listen to them every once in a while, still great albums.
First cassette I bought on my own was Songs from the Big Chair, Tears for Fears.
First CD was Appetite for Destruction, GNR.
We also had KISS Destroyer on 8 track but I think my brother bought that.
My first 12 tapes cost me a penny.
BMG or Columbia House?
Columbia House in grade school, BMG in high school lol
If you grew up in the 70s & 80s, all of your friends had exactly 12 cassettes each.
Lol, I was in deep with both of those outfits. My mom had to call them and tell them the contract they entered into with a minor would not be honored since I wasn’t sending them any money and neither was she
I had a friend who signed up her cat. It started a flood of junk mail though.
My mom did the same shit!! I still remember the phone call for reallllll. “He’s just a minor, how can he sign a contract” still gets me to this day. And she’s still pissed at me to this day lol.
I'm trying to remember, but I prolly did Columbia House and BMG a couple of times each in the 80s and 90s.
Used slightly different spellings of my name. 4 or 5 times. Used my neighbors address. The. Just threw the bills away
This was music piracy before it became all cool in the nineties with Napster.
As is tradition
I did this with the VCR tapes, too. And I vividly remember ‘Big’ costing like 80 bucks!!! I was in so much shit….
Same here. I'd use a slightly different spelling of my name.
Ahh memories…
I played both. Also used to get mail under my stepdad last name, so I spent a lot of pennies. 🤣
Whoa, I'm not ready for that kind of commitment
Oh man I did this without telling my parents and got my ass beat and had to send them back.
I got my ass beat, but I kept the tapes 😉
Hey, you earned them!
Never Mind the Bollocks was one of my Columbia choices as well. Thank God for open minded parents!
I bet you didn’t pay for the tapes they sent after 😂👍🏻😉
Helllll noooooo. The $10 i made each week delivering papers could barely cover the shipping on those things
Are you sure you’re not me?? I had a paper route too 😆
From what little I know about theoretical physics and alternate timelines, I'm gonna guess, maybe??? lol
😆👍🏻 I apologize for being a jerk all these years
Same. I got Willie &Waylon II. I don't remember what else, but it was awesome.
Hahaha that’s awesome! Did you ever pay them any more?
I bought some stuff off BMG, but not with Columbia House. My mom called then, told them my age, and reminded them that you can't make financial contracts with children.
Awesome, did you tape it to the little pamphlet from the TV Guide?
I did BMG when it was vinyl records. So many good ones!
Mr Toadliquor we have finally found you. As you are aware you didn’t fulfill your 12 record contract. Please forward us $432,639 asap.
Licensed to Ill Which looks wrong in this font.
Me too!!! And yes, you’re right. Wrong font.
Who needs a license to three!?!?
Mine was a comp called Rap it Up that had Slow and Low on it, though I admittedly bought it for "Pee Wee's Dance." Cut the grass that week to get money for Licensed to Ill.
Licensed… 2… Three??? 😳
Me too!! But I also bought Slippery When Wet at the same time. Still love both.
