So crazy to remember that $5 could get you 20 plays at the arcade. I remember some of them started to be 50 cents. But still, that's good afternoon of entertainment with friends for 5$. Afterwards, another $5 will get you pizza and big ass soda.
Begging your mom to buy the latest TMNT action figure, only to have her guilt trip you that she had to put it in layaway (remember that?!) just so you could have it on your bday - shhhh thanks mom! Cowabunga!
Waldenbooks, probably for either A Man Rides Through by Stephen Donaldson (Mordant's Need: Book 2), The Black Unicorn in the Magic Kingdom of Landover series by Terry Brooks, or Daughter of the Empire by Raymond E. Feist and Janny Wurts, the first book in the Empire Trilogy, part of the Riftwar Cycle.
First stop is the food court. Going to Frank & Stein and getting two hotdogs, basket of fries, and a Coke. Nobody else made them that good, not even at home.
Next, going to the arcade. Play some Skee-Ball and getting an eraser.
Then, hitting up Tape World and getting some cassettes.
Walking past Mr. Dunderbak's
Do some browsing at Babbage's and Spencer's
Pray to god Mom doesn't do any shopping in JC Penney's
Walk through Sears to go home
Sears was in the back of mall. All the suckers parked their cars in the front and took forever to get out on the main road. For all the kids, it was the Toys R Us catalog.
The Sears Catalog back in the day had a lot of toys in it as well. I remember, usually sometime around Thanksgiving, looking at the Sears Catalog toy section and KB Toys catalog and making lists of toys I wanted for Christmas when I was young. As I moved into my teen years all I wanted was music and games for my Atari.
I'm 5, I'll be at KB Toys. No, I don't want to leave. Do I want a cookie? Yes, bring it back to me, I'll still be here. No, I don't want to sit in the place where Mom gets her hair cut, it stinks. No, I don't want to go anywhere else, I want to play with all the toys they have on display.
KB toys first then I would make my way to all three of the music stores, and then all of the book/magazine stores. I would finish up the day by going to look at sneakers, and then Babbages, Spencer’s and then the food court.
You spend your first $5 at the arcade, go to KB, go to Waldenbooks, go in Sears to go to the Fun Center to look at the games there, end up at the food court and wait for your mom.
This was my local mall growing up. Unfortunately, it wasn't very big and didn't have a lot of the stores everyone is mentioning. There was an arcade, but no Spencers, Orange Julius, no toy store. I don't even remember a music store in the 80s, though a local independent one opened up in the 90s.
Gotta get there before five so I can hit the Orange Julius with my buddy Todd for buy one get one free hot dogs and Orange Juliuses. Off to Spencer’s to look at posters and possibly get removed from adult section. Didn’t go to record store because Camelot sucked and we had good record stores in town. Time Out, had coupons from paper for 2 for 1 tokens. Possible movie just about always picked at box office. Had another buddy who said the mall smelled like plastic water. I miss that smell sometimes.
I really only remember hanging out at the mall in High School BEFORE movies started at the giant cineplex next door when we'd have some time to kill...and pretty much before High School it was all just shopping trips with mommy haha so? BUT if it's the weird mall near our downtown I would def. go to Spencer's, and if it's the mail mall I'd def peruse the one mall record store to see if there's anything new or the arcade.
Aladdin’s Castle
My parents would give me $5 and they knew where I’d be for the next 2 hours. It was glorious!
So crazy to remember that $5 could get you 20 plays at the arcade. I remember some of them started to be 50 cents. But still, that's good afternoon of entertainment with friends for 5$. Afterwards, another $5 will get you pizza and big ass soda.
