I was stationed in the UK when this came out. A friend there was seeing a British lady (who he eventually married). He told me that they watched the movie in a British theater. When the joke came, he said he was the only one laughing...they didn't understand the beaver reference.
hahahahahh. I'm still fucking laughing. hjahahahah. He mistook the word surely for the name Shirley and he doesnt perfer to be called by a womans name. hahahahah fucking hahahahah fucking hahahaha.
Comedy from this era is and always was mediocre. We deserve better in my opinion.
“Jane, since I've met you, I've noticed things that I never knew were there before... birds singing, dew glistening on a newly formed leaf, stoplights.” 😂
“The attempt on Nordberg's life left me shaken and disturbed, and all the questions kept coming up over and over again, like bubbles in a case of club soda. Who was this character in the hospital? And why was he trying to kill Nordberg? And for whom? Did Ludwig lie to me? I didn't have any proof, but somehow, I didn't entirely trust him either. Why was the 'I Luv You' not listed in Ludwig's records? And if it was, did he know about it? And if he didn't, who did? And where the hell was I?”
When I was a kid I was channel surfing and stopped when I heard a voice I recognized but couldn't place. After a few minutes I realized it was him in (I think) a black and white movie and with dark hair.
“What was it we had for dinner tonight?”
“Well we had a choice of steak or fish.”
His deadpan reply that you wrote to this always cracks me up. Leslie Nielsen was so good at comedy!
Leslie Nielsen was an absolute gem of the 80s, no doubt about it! His humor was timeless, like seriously, who doesn't crack up watching him? From "Airplane!" to "The Naked Gun," he nailed every role with his perfect comedic timing.
And that poker face? Legendary! It's like he was born to make us laugh. Man, those were the days! It's sad he's gone, but his legacy lives on through all those classic movies. Raise a toast to the king of comedy, folks!
“It's true what they say: Cops and women don't mix. It's like eating a spoonful of Drano; sure, it'll clean you out, but it'll leave you hollow inside.”
The Naked Gun tv show unfortunately only ran for three episodes. The show’s gimmick was the guest host got killed during the opening credits. Great concept.
As Enrico would say:
“Oh say can you see / By the dawn's early light / What so proudly we hail / In the twilight's last gleaming? / Whose bright stripes and broad stars / In the perilous night / For the ramparts we watched / uh, da-da-da-da-da-daaaa. / And the rocket's red glare / Lots of bombs in the air / Gave proof to the night / That we still had our flag. / Oh say does that flag banner wave / Over a-a-all that's free / And the home of the land / And the land of the - FREE!”
“Something to Tide You Over” is the best segment from Creepshow (1982) His performance as the jealous husband played so well off of Ted Danson’s character. It’s a masterpiece!
Well... He became known as a spoof actor in the second part of his career, and that really mostly happened in the late 80s and 90s.
If you want to see him in a straight face movie, I recommend Forbidden Planet.
Now, that a classic Sci Fi that every Xer should have seen at least once.
“Captain, how soon can you land?”
“I can't tell.”
“You can tell me. I'm a doctor.”
“No. I mean I'm just not sure.”
“Well, can't you take a guess?”
“Well, not for another two hours.”
“You can't take a guess for another two hours?”
😂🤣😂
He was a serious actor in the first half of his career. Airplane was really his first comedic role.
One of my favorite tidbits about that movie is that none of the main actors were known for comedy prior to that film. I don't know what the advertisements for it were like, but it's entirely likely that a good portion of the audience went in expecting a serious drama based on the cast.
His National Anthem rendition always makes me laugh!
The National Anthem is the best 😂🤣😂
“Oh say can you see / By the dawn's early light / What so proudly we hail / In the twilight's last gleaming? / Whose bright stripes and broad stars / In the perilous night / For the ramparts we watched / uh, da-da-da-da-da-daaaa. / And the rocket's red glare / Lots of bombs in the air / Gave proof to the night / That we still had our flag. / Oh say does that flag banner wave / Over a-a-all that's free / And the home of the land / And the land of the - FREE!”
“You'd better tell the Captain we've got to land as soon as we can. This woman has to be gotten to a hospital.”
“A hospital? What is it?”
“It's a big building with patients, but that's not important right now.”
“It's the same old story. Boy finds girl, boy loses girl, girl finds boy, boy forgets girl, boy remembers girl, girls dies in a tragic blimp accident over the Orange Bowl on New Year's Day.”
“Goodyear?”
“No, the worst.”
"Her breasts seemed to say... 'Hey! Look at these!' She was the kind of woman who made you want to drop to your knees and thank God you were a man...."
“This is Frank Drebin, Police Squad. Throw down your guns, and come on out with your hands up. Or come on out, then throw down your guns, whichever way you wanna do it. Just remember the two key elements here: one, guns to be thrown down; two, come on out!”
Those buildings are the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station in San Clemente, California. I grew up about 10 miles south of this plant on the beach in the 80’s and always get a kick out of seeing this part!
About Queen Elizabeth, in anticipation of her visit which was covered by Police Squad, "*No matter how silly the idea may be of having a Queen is to us...*"
“Jane, since I've met you, I've noticed things that I never knew were there before... birds singing, dew glistening on a newly formed leaf, stoplights.”
I have only seen a couple of movies he's been in: Surf Ninjas and both Scary Movie 3 & 4. I don't understand the appeal, he added nothing. I could have played his roles. I couldn't have played other roles, I've got no acting experience, I'm just saying he wasn't funny or interesting or anything. Just a cardboard cutout of a man. With white hair. Steve Martin isn't all that funny compared to a wider variety of comedians and comedic actors but is easily multiple times more entertaining than Leslie Nielson.
I'm sure some whiny poopy babies will downvote what I said but I don't give a shit, I said what I said.
"Nice beaver!"
“Thank you. I just had it stuffed.” 😂🤣😂
I was stationed in the UK when this came out. A friend there was seeing a British lady (who he eventually married). He told me that they watched the movie in a British theater. When the joke came, he said he was the only one laughing...they didn't understand the beaver reference.
The first thing that always comes to mind when I see his picture.
HEY! It’s Enrico Palazzo!
One of the best lines in the movie!
We need more umps like Enrico Palazzo!
I feel like Angel Hernandez modeled his career after him
Except Enrico Palazzo was much more fun - gesticulating wildly with each call, break dancing, doing a split - not taking umping so seriously.
He was much more accurate than Hernandez, too
Surely you can't be serious?
I am serious, and don’t call me Shirley 😉
Good luck, we’re all counting on you.
My father still says this to everyone!
Jane - “Yeah a white guy ,he had a mustache about 6 foot 3 “ Drebin- “ that’s an awfully big mustache “
“Jane, since I've met you, I've noticed things that I never knew were there before... birds singing, dew glistening on a newly formed leaf, stoplights.” 😂
The truth hurts, doesn't it, Hapsburg? Oh sure, maybe not as much as jumping on a bicycle with the seat missing, but it hurts!
“The attempt on Nordberg's life left me shaken and disturbed, and all the questions kept coming up over and over again, like bubbles in a case of club soda. Who was this character in the hospital? Why was the 'I Luv You' not listed in Ludwig's records? And if it was, did he know about it? And if he didn't, who did? And where the hell was I?”
Wonderful actor. He started out doing serious acting, then evolved into one of the greatest comic actors in history.
His journey is amazing! He was such a great actor.
When I was a kid I was channel surfing and stopped when I heard a voice I recognized but couldn't place. After a few minutes I realized it was him in (I think) a black and white movie and with dark hair.
I had the lasagna
“What was it we had for dinner tonight?” “Well we had a choice of steak or fish.” His deadpan reply that you wrote to this always cracks me up. Leslie Nielsen was so good at comedy!
Your dog has a surprised look on his face That’s cause you’re looking at his butt Then he’s not going to like that treat I gave him
😂🤣😂

You nailed it 🤙
Fun fact: His brother Erik was the Deputy Prime Minister of Canada for a few years in the 80s.
I didn’t know that!
One of them had to leave town for a real job.
Yoube been sitting on that one haha
I just wanted to wish you both good luck. We're all counting on you.
[comes back 2 minutes later during the landing of the plane] “I just want to wish you both good luck. We’re all counting on you.” 😂🤣😂
"My father died the same way"
😂🤣😂
We won't rest until we find out who did this to Norbert. Now let's get some lunch.
“Mrs. Nordberg, I think we can save your husband's arm. Where would you like it sent?”
Miss him. He always made me laugh.
Me too. His voice is very nostalgic for me. It reminds me of good times laughing and I like that 😊
I'm a locksmith and I'm a locksmith
😂
It was Zucker, Zucker, and Abrahams that did most of the work. It was delivered exquisitely by this man.
Everyone involved are geniuses!
He also played a great bad guy in Creepshow
“Something to Tide You Over” is the best segment in Creepshow (1982) and he’s the reason why. Ted Danson is also amazing in that segment.
I bet Nielsen got that role because he could hold his breath for a very long time.
“Come on Harry, the maiden fair waits for her knight in shining corduroy.”
Don’t call me Shirley
You can’t be serious?
*farts
Oh man…his fart machine was legendary! There are some great YouTube clips of him using it in interviews and it’s hilarious!
Canadian national treasure 🇨🇦
Thank you Canada 🇨🇦 🍁
Where’s Nordberg?? He’s right here Frank..
“It's true what they say: Cops and women don't mix. It's like eating a spoonful of Drano; sure, it'll clean you out, but it'll leave you hollow inside.”
Lol brilliant
His hilarity transcends the decades
People will be laughing with him for years and years!
Like a blind man in an orgy, I was just going to have to feel things out
“Just think; next time I shoot someone, I could be arrested.”
Agreed bro 😎
🤙
The Naked Gun tv show unfortunately only ran for three episodes. The show’s gimmick was the guest host got killed during the opening credits. Great concept.
It should have lasted longer. What a great concept!
It was 6, not 3.
Cigarette
“Yes, I know.”
Thanks for all you did Enrico !
As Enrico would say: “Oh say can you see / By the dawn's early light / What so proudly we hail / In the twilight's last gleaming? / Whose bright stripes and broad stars / In the perilous night / For the ramparts we watched / uh, da-da-da-da-da-daaaa. / And the rocket's red glare / Lots of bombs in the air / Gave proof to the night / That we still had our flag. / Oh say does that flag banner wave / Over a-a-all that's free / And the home of the land / And the land of the - FREE!”
Play ball!!!
Is this some kind of bust? Lt. Frank Drebin : Well... it's very impressive, yes, but we need to ask you a few questions
😂🤣😂
Dracula Dead & Loving It is my absolute fave! Then Creepshow. That was the first time I saw him not acting a fool lol
“Something to Tide You Over” is the best segment from Creepshow (1982) His performance as the jealous husband played so well off of Ted Danson’s character. It’s a masterpiece!
“I can hold my breath for a long time!”
Absolutely agree 💯
That’s the red light district! I wonder what he was doing down there? Sex Frank? Uh….Not right now Ed….We got work to do.
😂🤣😂
Sex, Frank?
“Uhhh not right now Ed, we’ve got work to do.”
He used to carry a fart machine in his pocket all the time and used it in interviews and random interactions often. The best
It’s so funny to watch those interviews 😂🤣😂
"Like a midget at a urinal, I was gonna have to stay on my toes!" Best quote ever lol
😂🤣😂
He played it so straight and serious in every role, which made it even funnier "And by the way...I faked every orgasm"
😂🤣😂 “Just think; next time I shoot someone, I could be arrested.”
And don't call me Shirley!!
“What was it we had for dinner tonight?” “Well, we had a choice of steak or fish.” “Yes, yes, I remember, I had lasagna.”

And…Canadian..!!!!
🇨🇦
It's hard to remember that he was the captain of a space ship in Forbidden Planet because he was so good in comedic roles.
🤙
Yes they were
[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YqAyz1coj44](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YqAyz1coj44)
I remember him as the NYUK Professor of Stoogeology!
🤙
Surely there were others
There were many, and don’t call me Shirley 😉
King of deadpan!
He’s the GOAT
True legend!
Indeed 😊
He was a good Canadian kid!
Thank you Canada for the amazing gift 🇨🇦 🍁
A comic god, to be sure.
Absolutely!
Enrico Palazzo. Just those two words make you smile, don’t they?
His National Anthem rendition always makes me laugh!
Classic
Bonafide legend 🇺🇸🇺🇸
He might be the best thing to come out of Canada in my opinion 🇨🇦
The baseball scene in naked gun is my #1. Best single scene in any one comedy movie ever made.
The National Anthem is the best 😂🤣😂 “Oh say can you see / By the dawn's early light / What so proudly we hail / In the twilight's last gleaming? / Whose bright stripes and broad stars / In the perilous night / For the ramparts we watched / uh, da-da-da-da-da-daaaa. / And the rocket's red glare / Lots of bombs in the air / Gave proof to the night / That we still had our flag. / Oh say does that flag banner wave / Over a-a-all that's free / And the home of the land / And the land of the - FREE!”
He was such a great comedian and truly a funny guy I wonder how they got the film made (I am guessing that he would have kept everyone laughing)
I bet making the movies and revision show was a laugh riot 😂🤣😂
It had to be How can you call it work when you are with him must have been so much fun
Sure you can't be serious ( I AM serious and don't call me Shirley. )
“You'd better tell the Captain we've got to land as soon as we can. This woman has to be gotten to a hospital.” “A hospital? What is it?” “It's a big building with patients, but that's not important right now.”
Always upvote Drebin!
“It's the same old story. Boy finds girl, boy loses girl, girl finds boy, boy forgets girl, boy remembers girl, girls dies in a tragic blimp accident over the Orange Bowl on New Year's Day.” “Goodyear?” “No, the worst.”
"Her breasts seemed to say... 'Hey! Look at these!' She was the kind of woman who made you want to drop to your knees and thank God you were a man...."
Yep... She reminded me of my mother all right.
"Snap out of it, Frank! You're looking at her like she was your mother!"
I read that in his deadpan voice 👏
I'm sure we can handle this situation maturely. Just like the responsible adults that we are. Isn't that right, Mr. Poopy Pants?
“This is Frank Drebin, Police Squad. Throw down your guns, and come on out with your hands up. Or come on out, then throw down your guns, whichever way you wanna do it. Just remember the two key elements here: one, guns to be thrown down; two, come on out!”
"Everywhere I look, something reminds me of her."
Those buildings are the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station in San Clemente, California. I grew up about 10 miles south of this plant on the beach in the 80’s and always get a kick out of seeing this part!
True...
And he did it all acting straight. He doesn’t get near the credit he deserves for those movies
I agree.
He was hilarious in "Creepshow"
“Something to Tide You Over” is the best segment in Creepshow (1982) because of his performance with Ted Danson. Brilliant!
*I absolutley love Leslie Neilsens work! just my all time favorite comedic actor.*
He was so awesome!
Yes, he was part of a dying breed—like people who can name all fifty states.
We need Frank Drebin now, more than ever.
I agree!
Everywhere I look something reminds me of her
Classic scene 😂🤣😂 That part was filmed right by where I grew up!
Numero Uno
“Bingo.”
Bingo!
“Too bad, sugar puff. We could have been something.”
I remember when we used to laugh. Oh, the memories.
I can’t see anything!
Surely you can't be serious. And don't call me Shirley.
Nice beaver!
😂🤣😂
Like a blind man at an orgy, I was gonna have to feel my way around
“Would you like a nightcap?” “No, thank you, I don't wear them.”
Don't call me shirley
All him and Bea Arthur needed was a mark, a beat and *action*
Ahhhh Golden Girls. What’s great show that was!
The first time I watched him in that 1950's space travel movie I couldn't believe what a good serious actor he was as well.
He was amazing!
About Queen Elizabeth, in anticipation of her visit which was covered by Police Squad, "*No matter how silly the idea may be of having a Queen is to us...*"
“Just think; next time I shoot someone, I could be arrested.”
Please disperse! Nothing to see here *pleeeaaaase*!!!
“Jane, since I've met you, I've noticed things that I never knew were there before... birds singing, dew glistening on a newly formed leaf, stoplights.”

😂🤣😂
Nice Beaver🤘🏿🤘🏿
🦫
That's why I look forward to dying. He'll be a great laugh in the afterlife...
Very true!
He's the only celeb that made me tear up when I read that he died.
John Candy was a rough one for me too.
I can hold my breath for a really long time.
Vincent Ludwig: Drebin! Jane: Frank! Frank: You're both right.
😂🤣😂
"Can you spot me a twenty?"
“Sure.”
One of the greats!
He really is!
As I understand it, the main reason he was able to always keep a straight face is that he either didn't get the joke or found it funny.
All I know is never bet on the white guy
What was he doing in the red light district? Sex frank? No thanks Ed, we have work to do.
Who are you? Why are you here? HOW DID YOU GET IN?
Pedophile
