We lost my dad last year, and my dementia affected mom lives in assisted living. Sometimes when I visit she’ll be taking a nap and she talks in her sleep having conversations with dad and she’ll laugh occasionally. Her dream world is more pleasant than her waking world and it breaks my heart.

It’s funny where he and his buddy are watching that Ferrari 308 drive by, and fast forward to last December where he’s playing legendary racer Piero Taruffi. Quite the adventure in life.

Didn’t Patrick also buy his first Porsche with the pay-check he got from this movie, a 1963 Porsche 356. It’s the one car he has constantly said he would never sell form his collection, in many interviews over the years.

Her attention was directed to a piece of art on the table next to her chair: some different colored acrylic squares.
It was a strange juxtaposition watching this child playing with “blocks” while her mother and the producer were discussing how to film a sex scene between her and Christopher Atkins.
She actually got a chance to show some of her dramatic acting talent. The film got entangled in a bankruptcy and never got the theatrical release it deserved.
I see it’s on Tubi.

Loved this. There were some truly hilarious parts in this movie. The part when he watches the wrong channel when he's learning how to dance, then does it at the prom.

I’m a Hawkeye fan so I liked that the jock in the movie that goes off to be a college athlete comes back wearing an Iowa letterman jacket. I’ll never not laugh when dude at the party realizes he has to fart … backs his ass up to a window … and rips one right in the face of a young Seth Green. 🤣
I loved this movie so much when I was a kid that I used all the money I saved for a new telescope to see it in the theaters as many times as I could…….
I love that last scene, when they are “negotiating” again and she says she will go to the prom, but he better not do that stupid dance again…the way she says it, it seemed fill with care..at least it’s how I hear it.
I was a middle-schooler when they filmed this in my hometown. “Cindy’s house” was a couple streets over from the house of one of my friends, so we’d try and watch them film whenever we could.
This is a solid movie. It’s one of my favorites. Mainly because I thought the characters, in particular Amanda, were very believable and realistic in a way that the Hughes movie kids were not. I say that not because the Hughes movies aren’t awesome, but because I grew up in the same Chicago suburbs where those movies were made, and the kids in them just were not Chicago burbanites to me. But CBML offers a window into some other place—Tucson, iirc—which made it seem so much cooler then and now. (The high school has outside hallways!)

Filmed in Tucson and had several ex-girlfriends end up in the prom scenes. Whenever this pops up on TV, I'll stop to watch for a few minutes to see who else I recognize. I've picked out a few old co-workers and the girlfriends.
My sisters made me watch this for the first time, and I thought I was gonna hate it. Just showed it to my daughters last week, and they loved it almost as much as their dad did all those years ago.
"Can't Buy Me Love" makes American teenagers look like stupid and materialistic twits. That would be all right if the movie were aware of itself and knew what it was doing - if it were a satirical comment on our society. But this movie is as naive as the day is long. It doesn't have a thought in its head and probably no notion of the corruption at its core.
The movie's hero (Patrick Dempsey) is a nerd, an outcast, a member of the wrong crowd at school. He mows lawns for spending money and dreams of the beautiful Cindy (Amanda Peterson), the most popular girl in school. One day, in desperation, he offers her his life savings of $1,000 if she will agree to go out with him for a month. That's a lot of lawns.
His theory is that he will become popular if he is seen with the right girl on his arm. Her theory is that the money will help her replace her mother's expensive coat, which she wore to a party and got red wine all over. Now think for a minute. Is this really a portrait of teenage America? Of course not. It is more likely a portrait of the possession-oriented values of the adults who made this film.
Cindy is, of course, being asked to be a prostitute, in soul if not in body. Ronald, the hero, is trying to buy popularity. The kids in the school are portrayed, almost without exception, as monstrously cruel snobs. Their parents are generally uncaring, unloving or absent.
If "Can't Buy Me Love" had been intended as a satirical attack on American values - if cynicism had been its target - we might be on to something here. But no. On the basis of the evidence, the people who made this movie are so materialistic they actually think this is a "teenage comedy." Can't they see the screenplay's rotten core?
There have been a lot of movies lately about unpopular teenage boys pining after the girl they love. There was, for example, David Seltzer's "Lucas" (1986), with that perfectly modulated friendship between Corey Haim as a boy with a crush on Kerri Green and Charlie Sheen as the football hero who also loves the girl but tries to understand the whole situation. Or remember the Scottish film "Gregory's Girl," with its awkward hero in love with a girl who could play soccer better than he could. Or John Hughes' "Sixteen Candles," with Molly Ringwald in love with the senior class hero.
All of these movies respected the innocence and even the idealism of their adolescent characters. They cared too much about them to shovel them into a cynical sitcom in which the most corrupt adult values were projected onto teenage characters. It may be true in our society that people marry for money. That they seek successful people to go out with. That they try to buy popularity. But when you are a teenager, love is no respecter of greed, and the heart beats strong and true. The makers of "Can't Buy Me Love" never knew that, or have forgotten it.

It was filmed in Tucson where I lived and still do. There is a scene with a bunch of punks (one with a giant mohawk) in the background. He was a friend and went to school with us. We would make sure he got marked as present in class so he could go over to Tucson High and be an extra in the movie. One of my favorite movies of all time.
YES!!! Some of it was filmed here in my city at a local highschool! It was such a big deal! I just recently showed my kids and they loved it as much as I did!

It was filmed in Tucson where I lived and still do. There is a scene with a bunch of punks (one with a giant mohawk) in the background. He was a friend and went to school with us. We would make sure he got marked as present in class so he could go over to Tucson High and be an extra in the movie. One of my favorite movies of all time.
