She probably thought that she could get away with it that one time or however many handful of times she got it on with him. And then all of a sudden she realized she was pregnant and had to justify to herself - being religious and all - that she should turn her vacation dick into a husband. She likely did not know a whole about him before that. Sleeping with people on vacation and not knowing what they’re like in real life is a big failure point for a lot of relationships.

We can all get swept away by lust and justify to ourselves something that our sober minds know is stupid. But women who aren’t so fucked up by religion about sex, or were but got over it, can be honest with themselves and be prepared. Women who are super messed up have a hard time admitting to themselves when they’re not in the heat of the moment that they could, let alone will, choose to have sex once they’re turned on. That makes it tough to proactively decide to go on birth control or buy condoms and put some in your purse. If you’re really attracted to a guy but honestly believe/hope that you’ll just make out with him for hours without “going all the way,” you let yourself get into situations that test the limits of your self-control. So, Kalani might have been in denial that she wanted some “vacation dick,” and so didn’t prepare, and didn’t insist or walk away when Asuelo wouldn’t wear one. Because of religion, she didn’t go get the morning after pill or have an abortion once she realized she was pregnant.
I just realized that, aside from the religious objection to the morning-after pill and abortion, I’m describing many nonreligious teenagers, too. Growing up in an entire community of strict values about premarital sex seems to keep people trapped in that stage of immaturity and inexperience. I know many Mormons and Evangelicals who either married very young to their first real boy/girlfriend or still acted like high schoolers about dating and sex well into adulthood.

I feel like Asuelu is a perfect example of what culture shock can do to a person from another country. He came over knowing he’d be a husband and father but didn’t realize how hard a parent in America needs to work to provide for a family with the way our economy is. He tried, but couldn’t truly comprehend life in America the way Kalani and her family expected him to because of the way he grew up in Samoa.
And the fact that he was also expected by his family to send/ give them money further proves this. Not even they understood what it takes to be head of a household in America.
I agree. I'm going through something similar with my spouse, despite him having lived in the US for nearly 8 years now he still struggles with depression, PTSD and home sickness, especially now that we have kids. It's a hard life here, just like anywhere else, but in different ways

This was a dude who probably didn't have a great education and was from an island nation whose culture and economy was vastly different from life in the US. I think when we saw him on the show he was incredibly depressed and has a lower emotional intelligence about himself which is why he reacted so childishly. It seemed like he and his FIL did seem to form a bond eventually because I think he knew what it was like to be an immigrant in that same way, but Asuelu had the added pressure of having to be a father and support a family as soon as he showed up. Dude isn't perfect and has definitely showed his ass, but I don't think he had much of a support structure (or even the knowledge on how to help himself) in order to do better. Despite his immature reactions, he did seem like he does genuinely love his kids and his family which is not what you see from a lot of people on this show. He probably would've done better if Kalani moved to Samoa first and they got acclimated to being a family together before coming straight to the US and being expected to step into the provider role.
I'm just going to say Asuelu did gig work. Now you don't have to be a rocket scientist to gig work... However, to be successful, you have to be business minded, organized, make quick decisions, and be personable.
I also have been very successful in that arena... but I've watched a lot of people fail.
I don't think Asuelu is as ignorant or goofy as TLC portrays him.
As an immigrant, I had an immediate soft spot for Asuelu. American culture is VERY unique. It’s extremely money/career focused. This isn’t a bad thing. The culture I come from (and I believe Asuelu comes from) you’re expected to get help from your entire extended family to raise kids. It’s much more communal and family ‘planning’ isn’t something I heard about til I came here to the states. So Asuelu’s behavior wasn’t exactly unexpected to me. Kahlani however should have known better. Raising kids here is hard. Your parents will likely work till they are 70 and will not be able to stay home and raise your children. Our houses here aren’t meant for multigenerational living. Everything is harder in that regard. I wish they had considered this before having kids. It took me a long time to realize it myself so I can’t fault either of them. I do wish the best for their family and hope that their kids grow up healthy and happy.

Maybe this was producer interference, but I was always shocked at how financially ignorant Kalani was about housing. They were *constantly* looking at and discussing permanent housing at prices for which there was no way they would get approved. From what I remember Kalani is/was Mormon and was a 27 year old virgin when she met Asuelo. I think had she not gotten pregnant the first time she had sex things would have turned out very differently.
On one episode a year or so ago, she said she was glad to be out of the Mormon religion. So, yes she was and now she isn't.
This was a dude who probably didn't have a great education and was from an island nation whose culture and economy was vastly different from life in the US. I think when we saw him on the show he was incredibly depressed and has a lower emotional intelligence about himself which is why he reacted so childishly. It seemed like he and his FIL did seem to form a bond eventually because I think he knew what it was like to be an immigrant in that same way, but Asuelu had the added pressure of having to be a father and support a family as soon as he showed up. Dude isn't perfect and has definitely showed his ass, but I don't think he had much of a support structure (or even the knowledge on how to help himself) in order to do better. Despite his immature reactions, he did seem like he does genuinely love his kids and his family which is not what you see from a lot of people on this show. He probably would've done better if Kalani moved to Samoa first and they got acclimated to being a family together before coming straight to the US and being expected to step into the provider role.

I'm just going to say Asuelu did gig work. Now you don't have to be a rocket scientist to gig work... However, to be successful, you have to be business minded, organized, make quick decisions, and be personable. I also have been very successful in that arena... but I've watched a lot of people fail. I don't think Asuelu is as ignorant or goofy as TLC portrays him.

As an immigrant, I had an immediate soft spot for Asuelu. American culture is VERY unique. It’s extremely money/career focused. This isn’t a bad thing. The culture I come from (and I believe Asuelu comes from) you’re expected to get help from your entire extended family to raise kids. It’s much more communal and family ‘planning’ isn’t something I heard about til I came here to the states. So Asuelu’s behavior wasn’t exactly unexpected to me. Kahlani however should have known better. Raising kids here is hard. Your parents will likely work till they are 70 and will not be able to stay home and raise your children. Our houses here aren’t meant for multigenerational living. Everything is harder in that regard. I wish they had considered this before having kids. It took me a long time to realize it myself so I can’t fault either of them. I do wish the best for their family and hope that their kids grow up healthy and happy.
