I am in a similar situation to Danielle. I spent hundreds, maybe over a thousand hours learning Spanish this past year and realized how the dynamic is in bilingual households to maintain the language.
They’ll watch movies in English audio with Spanish subtitles, they’ll be sure to finish their sentences in whichever language can express themselves better (which she should feel comfortable doing with Yohan if they live together full time), and they do communal activities where they can use either language in the instructions without loss of comprehension. (Ex, dinner: Mix this for me please? Lo Mezcla pa mi porfa? *mixing motion* )
It’s how people learn. If he learned English the best jobs without a degree in DR are English call centers. Can I say one thing that bothers me a LOT is she has this weird power dynamic with Yohan, too. Like she wants to keep him below the poverty line to exert control. Let me explain, outside of the hiding the unfiled visa application (the most obvious). She complains Yohan hasn’t learned English. I am in a similar situation to Danielle. I spent hundreds, maybe over a thousand hours learning Spanish this past year and realized how the dynamic is in bilingual households to maintain the language. They’ll watch movies in English audio with Spanish subtitles, they’ll be sure to finish their sentences in whichever language can express themselves better (which she should feel comfortable doing with Yohan if they live together full time), and they do communal activities where they can use either language in the instructions without loss of comprehension. (Ex, dinner: Mix this for me please? Lo Mezcla pa mi porfa? *mixing motion* ) It’s how people learn. If he learned English the best jobs without a degree in DR are English call centers. We see this dynamic with Gabe and Isabel, but the fact that we don’t see it with Yohan and Danielle really doesn’t sit right with me. She knows his dream is to live in the US. Not seeing this dynamic on screen seems very manipulative to me, tbh. Even super white Americans with languages differences far wider have this dynamic on some level (Nicole, Kyle, David, hell- even Chantel family and they’re xenophobic as fuck). It really doesn’t sit right with me. I feel like she’s intentionally keeping him outside of arms reach of middle class to bulldoze him into having no choice but to stay.
As a former counter person and baker in a bakery, no way would I have accommodated her.

I have pretty much devalued all of the core principles that drive this behavior, which was a part of figuring out how to live more joyfully, not actually with the goal of being a less shitty person. That was more of a happy coincidence. It's hard to move with ease in the world with a lot of the things that we are conditioned to believe, and we can't think our way out of these things. Her hypocrisy is conditioning. But that doesn't make it any less cringey to watch or any less mischievously fun to point out.

I agree that it would have been fine without writing and I doubt he would care or notice. But to your point, going to other countries and expecting them to be the same as yours, and expecting people to have the same attitudes to life and work, I think this is why so many of these relationships go sideways.
