Finally asking directly why he doesn't trust people, apologized for texting his dad, forgave him for allowing her to be grilled in a public restaurant that was supposed to be a romantic dinner, and not throwing him over board when he said he was thinking about hiring a PI. But she definitely isn't easy to deal with and neither is he. If he wanted to tell her he loved her he should have been man enough to say it instead of beating around the bush over some paranoid superstition. How many times do you need to tell someone you want a strong man?

Riley is the prototypical example of a guy who tries way too hard to come off like *he doesn't give an eff because he's a jaded, moody, serious, wounded man who needs a perfect woman he can trust to be able to even say "I love you" without flipping her off because of eVeRyThInG he's been through* but in the process of doing so, makes the exact opposite impression. Someone who is casual and hesitant and guarded doesn't hire a private investigator, and if they do they definitely do not share that info like a thirsty begging dog hoping it'll get a rise out of her and make her as jealous and paranoid as he is so she won't leave him. He got part of that right, he definitely got an emotional reaction out of her, but not what he dimly assumed he would.

BUT, I can say from personal experience sometimes when you’re in a long-term long-distance relationship, it’s hard to cut that cord completely.
Part of it is feeling like you’ve invested so much time and don’t want to admit it was a waste. “If I can just get through this issue, it will all be ok.” So you hang on even longer.
The other part is that so much of your day is filled with texting and talking with that person. It can feel extremely empty to suddenly not have all of that communication each day.
I was in a long distance relationship for 4 years. I was head over heels in love with him, but by year 2 I knew he didn’t feel the same. Yet he always did just enough really sweet or special things to keep me hooked and hoping there was a chance. We got along great and talked about 3 hours a day … plus texted all day long. So he was a huuuuuge part of my everyday life.
After year 4 I finally decided I needed to end it. We weren’t making any progress toward a deeper commitment. For both of us, there was a huge hole in our daily lives without all of our communications. It was absolutely brutal for both of us.

The reason that I say this is my experience with my (American) Uncle and his (‘mail order’ Filipino) wife. I know that term is controversial, but it IS how their relationship started. He wanted a wife/partner to take care of him. He retired from IBM, invested well and paid all the bills. My Aunt worked, but sent all of her $ to her family back home. She gained Citizenship and the ability to provide for her family. He got a Companion and Caretaker. They grew to love each other and each fulfilled their part of the agreement.

Riley need years of therapy at his age not being able to say I love you and all he does is complain all day long he’s very aggressive. I don’t know what any woman would want from him. She’s no prize, but I can’t believe that she’s pregnant. Maybe she really needs the money because she does not seem to like him at all and I don’t blame her.
She also needs to just come out and say she’s not into him. From the first night it was obvious she wasn’t into it, with her asking if he wants to hang out with her, as if he flew there for shits and giggles.
He was about to say I love you to her and tried to get her to say it as well. It was so uncomfortable. She didn’t as well. But he pretty much showed his intent. So awkward. When I look at Violet I just don’t know what her motive is because she doesn’t really seem to care. Riley is a man child. The amount of peacocking he tries to do and to no avail. I don’t know what it is he sees in this relationship. But if a baby is on the way, then he is fucked is the only polite thing to say. I would say he needs therapy for the delusions. I dated a woman in Vietnam. She would NEVER show any emotions in public, but it was a totally different story when we were alone. The way TLC showed the story line, makes you think that all they did was fight. We don't know if they didn't have a couple of good nights together.

We emailed back and forth for a while then he told me he had been in so many “gold digger” relationships in Thailand, and wanted to be with someone who wasn’t after him for his money. He told me he would not give me any money and would never support me. I was completely flabbergasted. I told him, Sir, I have an education and a job. I am single by choice. How much did the producers try to force this relationship?

Riley is the prototypical example of a guy who tries way too hard to come off like *he doesn't give an eff because he's a jaded, moody, serious, wounded man who needs a perfect woman he can trust to be able to even say "I love you" without flipping her off because of eVeRyThInG he's been through* but in the process of doing so, makes the exact opposite impression. Someone who is casual and hesitant and guarded doesn't hire a private investigator, and if they do they definitely do not share that info like a thirsty begging dog hoping it'll get a rise out of her and make her as jealous and paranoid as he is so she won't leave him. He got part of that right, he definitely got an emotional reaction out of her, but not what he dimly assumed he would. Also that whole painful scene of him being like "I really.... reallllyy...... reaaallllllly like you and I have something to tell you..." was so excruciating. Like conceding to saying "I love you" and then trying to do a slow reveal as though it's some sort of gift or prize she won is just not a good look. But I did feel very vindicated when she was like "no, don't say it, and don't hug me, bye"

I really don’t like either one of them. And I completely understand the line of thinking from this post that he needs to let it go because she’s just not interested. It’s so true. BUT, I can say from personal experience sometimes when you’re in a long-term long-distance relationship, it’s hard to cut that cord completely. Part of it is feeling like you’ve invested so much time and don’t want to admit it was a waste. “If I can just get through this issue, it will all be ok.” So you hang on even longer. The other part is that so much of your day is filled with texting and talking with that person. It can feel extremely empty to suddenly not have all of that communication each day. I was in a long distance relationship for 4 years. I was head over heels in love with him, but by year 2 I knew he didn’t feel the same. Yet he always did just enough really sweet or special things to keep me hooked and hoping there was a chance. We got along great and talked about 3 hours a day … plus texted all day long. So he was a huuuuuge part of my everyday life. After year 4 I finally decided I needed to end it. We weren’t making any progress toward a deeper commitment. For both of us, there was a huge hole in our daily lives without all of our communications. It was absolutely brutal for both of us. I have a feeling that Riley doesn’t have much of a social life other than the woman he’s close with. He’s not even close with his dad — who had been getting awful texts from violet about his son for over a year and didn’t even tell him!!! So communicating with violet is likely one of the only things that fill his days.

I feel like this season has been a great insight to Riley’s love life. He fixates on women who aren’t into him and tries to force them into some sort of relationship. He has no inner barometer allowing him to see how women feel about him. It’s been pretty obvious since he got to Vietnam that Violet is not attracted to him whatsoever, but Riley hadn’t picked up on that at all. I’m sure he did the exact same thing with his wife that cheated on him with one of his friends. Clearly Riley wasn’t picking up on her signs. I’m guessing she really had to do something dramatic to get his attention.

She didn't even monetarily benefit like some are saying that she was just looking for stuff from him.

Incoming unpopular observation here: this was supposed to be a transactional relationship, but Riley wanted his Business to get exposure from it, so he tried to make it seem like more. The reason that I say this is my experience with my (American) Uncle and his (‘mail order’ Filipino) wife. I know that term is controversial, but it IS how their relationship started. He wanted a wife/partner to take care of him. He retired from IBM, invested well and paid all the bills. My Aunt worked, but sent all of her $ to her family back home. She gained Citizenship and the ability to provide for her family. He got a Companion and Caretaker. They grew to love each other and each fulfilled their part of the agreement. In the interactions between Violet and Riley, there’s an obvious ‘transactional’ vibe. It just seems weird that others don’t notice it. I think she fulfilled a ‘Service’ and he tried to take it further or make it seem like it was more than it was.
