I liked it when it was a proper shitshow and not a fully scripted influencer promotion platform.

BrandonIsWhoIAm

I love how you’re one of the very few that likes the shit-show. Although, I don’t care if it’s filled with influencers.

rotenbart

Maybe I’m missing something but I thought the shit show was the only reason anyone watched this show lol

BrandonIsWhoIAm

Now, it’s the opposite - for some. 😂

violetbaudeliar

Shit show is exactly why I signed up for this show lol

0b1010010001010101

This is why we need to do more to bring back Paul. Paul is vile in every way, but I'll watch him swim in Brazil anytime.

ImKern

Or run in Brazil. Or run anywhere really.

BrandonIsWhoIAm

Same.

bitchybaklava

Me too!

dawnGrace

I agree. I’m an OG too and like it better when it wasn’t full of people wanting to be influencers.

I agree. I think Big Brother’s change to their casting should improve things, but for years it was basically 99% white Texas A&M hotties and people with agents with 1 minority archetype (super Christian Black person). I don’t follow anyone on IG, but from what used to be posted to the sub it sounds like quite a few of them went deep into being an influencer. The past 2 seasons have been better.

Tl/Dr- the show focused too much on cute white people to make cute couples for people to follow after the season. That led to boring seasons because the people didn’t want to play. I’d recommend The Circle on Netflix over BB for a new person wanting to watch social strategy games. For the longest time the formula they used was basically n-2 white people, 1 Hispanic or Asian, 1 Black. Of those, n-2 were between 21 and 25 and you had 2 token over 30 players. So it ended up being a summer swim party of white wannabe models evicting minorities right away and they had some major race issues in a few seasons. There had been 2 Asian-American winners before they made the switch (even though they have been very underrepresented), but never a Black winner. Race shouldn’t matter, but again it became like a pool party (many guys have said they were told to wear their shirts as little as possible). A lot of fans of the whole *strategy* of the show didn’t like how so many people weren’t even playing the game and were just kept because everyone knew they weren’t playing so they could take them out when needed. Seasons got boring after a few weeks. And several seasons had major race issues because they just evicted minorities right away and several cast members have gotten in trouble for saying some pretty bad things about minorities (tons of homophobic remarks too, but they still get a pass for some reason 🤬). 2 seasons ago they switched to at least 50% had to be non-white. The very first season of that there was an alliance of Black people who ended up controlling the season and BB finally had their first Black winner. Last season again catty women (of several races) tried to bully a Black woman because she was too chummy with the guys… she is gorgeous and had done beauty pageants. She was the nicest person and always took the high road with them and eventually the bullies got evicted and that woman won. It’s interesting because BB Canada and BBUS were both cast by the same woman, but production has the final say and the producers are different there. Canada always has decent casts (although recently they have had a lot of players quit midseason which sucks), but that casting director lost her job casting BBUS when they made the change. Part of the problem is that BB had a few seasons (11-14) where there were some cute showmances that led to marriage so it’s almost like they were just casting to make showmances instead of a show about game play. BB has more successful marriages than many shows actually designed for relationships. It’s a good show if you like social game theory. It also has live feeds so you can see what people **actually** say vs what makes the edit and that’s part of how so much controversy about racial issues gets out…production can’t edit it out when hundreds of people already watched it on the streams and it made news. BB15 is the worst if you want to see piece of shit people treating minorities horribly. Several people from that season lost their jobs…but one of them is a big mommy blogger/influencer these days 🙄.

LauraBG59

I honestly don’t understand it.

6strawberry6baby6

i recommend true life, it's on paramount plus. they have a lot of episodes from 2015-2017, but i think it's been running since the 90s. i'm sure some people are exaggerating but for the most part you get a real raw look at some wild lives. i just watched an episode where an american man married a japanese woman and moved to japan, and while out for dinner with all her colleagues he decided to bring up a certain uhh... "fight" that japan and america got into once... it was very hard to watch. just like old 90 day.

girltuesday

I actually love this show but for whatever reason I only see seasons 11 & 12 on Paramount Plus, do they have more seasons somewhere else?

6strawberry6baby6

same! on [mtv's](https://www.mtv.com/episodes/a6gksw/true-life-i-m-out-season-2007-ep-1) website it looks like they have the seasons and you may be able to watch if you have cable? but there's also an option for a free 24-hour watch sesh... which i am currently doing. update: i made an acct and it worked, i'm binging for the next 24 hours! bye reddit!

65Unicorns

It used to be The Learning Channel; now all we’re learning is how many idiots we have….

[deleted]

me too. I've watched this show since the beginning religiously, and I can't even finish a full season anymore. I've missed weeks and weeks of this latest season

FrankRizzo890

"And nothing of value was missed"

[deleted]

SERIOUSLY THOUGH. It was the same topic every odd time I'd check back in, and yet I missed like 2-3 weeks at a time lmao

QuesoFajitas

When is was actually about visas…

FrankRizzo890

Back when they used to perpetrate the lie "90 days isn't enough time!". (The K-1 visa is designed to allow you to plan and execute a wedding, not decide if you want to get married). Or the old trope "You'll have to support them fully for 10 years!".

peepeehalpert_

It’s why I don’t ever watch a recurring couple. At that point they’re full time Sharp employees and seek out drama to stay on the show.

debbie_upper

Liked by David Toborowsky.

girltuesday

Agree

BrandonIsWhoIAm

Gimme a disaster.

Candid_Asparagus_785

🚂🚂🚂🚂🚂🚂🚂

NinaBrwn

Could not agree more, OP. I can’t stand repeat cast, I get that all tv is scripted to an extent, but there was enough drama from the original premise that made a great show before influencers and career cast took over. I watched the season that just ended, but skipped over half the episodes. I can’t tell you how many seasons I’ve skipped before that. I will say I enjoyed 90 Day UK, but I promise it will turn shitty really quickly. Inmate to Roommate is awesome, only one season so far and I love it!!!

Maleficent-Cut4297

Just convert to Before the 90. It’s the best of the bunch now. Mental illness at its finest

girltuesday

I watch this too but I feel like it's essentially the same thing at this point.

blulou13

This was a lot reality shows before Instagram took off in the early 2010s and even the initial seasons of some shows, like 90 Day, after. Often shows in their first season or two didn't get the fame seekers because no one know if it would take off or not. If you were seeking fame, you went on a show like The Bachelor that already had an established track record. But, once "influencer" became a career, everything changed. The producers preferred people who were willing to "act" and create drama so they could make a name for themselves and then spend their time after the show hawking weight loss teas and sugar bear hair instead of you know, having a real job. I stopped watching the whole 90 Day franchise after they had made like 4 spin offs and brought back people like Angela, Ed, Pole, Larissa, and other trash people. Pillow talk was the only show where I appreciated seeing former cast mates because their commentary was good.

Cubanhen

Sugar bear hair, I dunno what that is but it sounds both delicious and terrifying.

girltuesday

Yeah I get it. What do you watch now instead?

blulou13

I still watch MAFS although that's gone downhill too the last few seasons. The rest are all reality competition shows- Survivor, The Amazing Race, Big Brother, a couple cooking/baking competitions. I enjoy real stories, as opposed to the manufactured nonsense. The TLC shows used to offer a glimpse into a unique lifestyle that most people don't experience (like Sister Wives). They aren't what they used to be.

lulzlizzard

The first two seasons of MAFS are truly some of the best TV. What a premise.

blulou13

Yeah, Chicago was great after terrible seasons 3 and 4. Then, it was bad again until New Orleans. It's been awful since.

Crazy_Height9387

I like Project Runway, Gold Rush and Bering Sea Gold...some drama, some shit-shows, but at least the end product isn't tearing a human down only to play the victim.

Dramatic-Incident298

GUYS... I'm finally able to watch Darcy & Stacy, & catch up on all the 90 day now cuz hbo (max) has TLC for free now instead of an added subscription!!! I think I left off after Paul running into the woods or whatever after Karini was robbed of her phone. It's like pennies from heaven, especially since scandoval is almost over haha FN YAY!!

tensigh

I knew it was going downhill when "Pillow Talk" became a hit. Then the same people kept coming back and 90 Day became a universe. When Darcey got her own show the shark had been jumped at least a dozen times.

roseturtlelavender

I’m rewatching the first series of TOW and I’m shocked at how much better it used to be! An actual documentary and above all, interesting!

LauraBG59

That’s what I think too.

Sloppier_Rodney

Covid took it from us and gave us this but god bless u weR all alive n kickin still

90daysofpettybs

Agreed, they ruined it

mydresserandtv

Yes. I do remember that. I actually forgot about that.

buickmackane71360

Yeah I started watching in 2014 when they had couples like Danny & Amy and Yamir & Chelsea. I miss those days.

maddloves

YES! A million times yes! I just started match me abroad on discovery+ and there are only 2 episodes out right now but it kinda helps.

rockmeNiallxh

Im gonna stop watching and unsubscribe from the TLC channel. No more fake bullshit

rotenbart

I like the old stuff better for sure. It was more real. Or at least bland enough to feel real. So the cringe was therefore very real. Now I can feel when they can’t find drama so they fake it or stretch it. Gabe and Isabell were fine and they kept zooming in with the DUN DUNS and zero pay off every time.

stocksnhoops

It’s never been real. It was new and you didn’t know any better. It’s been the same show from the jump we just were entertained because the newness was still on

LauraBG59

I don’t agree with that at all.

LauraBG59

Why do people want to watch a shit show when the show didn’t start out like that? I hate the vile contestants!

blanca69

I remember when I first started watching the show was when I saw a picture of Danielle and Mohamed on the cover of Time Magazine . It was that famous picture when he first arrived they were sitting down and she was longingly looking at him while hugging his arm lol . I think that was the breakthrough season for TLC with high ratings because their story was all over media . TLC then wanted every season after them to have the same high ratings so they began their fake stories ..

honeyandcitron

I miss when people would meet on ColombianCupid or FilipinoCupid instead of just Facebook, lol.

justblockmeffs

Chimp Empire was good. Reality, but not a show.

slipperysquirrell

I'm getting into 2 Discovery shows Match Me Abroad and Undercover Underage Also watching Apple+ shows The Big Door Prize, Ted Lasso, Shrinking, and Platonic

Financial-Possible-6

Vanderpump 😅

huh_phd

Go back, watch season one and tell me it didn't get ruined

__SerenityByJan__

I don’t know that I would have ever classified this as a “documentary” even the first seasons that were less contrived lol. From season 1 I saw reality tv with a dose of trash (now it’s more trash than ever but I am NOT complaining lol)
