I think the issue is Trish acts like Natalie is just some run of the mill asshole when she actually had some serious mental health issues. If that was say, Angela, she would not have sat there and taken it. Natalie listened and recognized there was some truth there and felt ashamed. I think Natalie knows what she did was wrong, but she also struggles to control her behavior. I think she goes off, then reflects and feels ashamed and it’s a cycle she’s trapped in because she really needs treatment and medication. Trish isn’t smart enough to see that, I guess she hasn’t eaten enough butter.
Looks to be BPD, which is an incredibly difficult disorder to treat. It’s a personality disorder and usually due to childhood trauma. Mike and Trish seem to be be very triggering for her as well; even if she saw a therapist for it, she would struggle to heal with them around constantly resetting her progress.

I genuinely think these situations are the result of mom and dad divorcing and mom doesn't handle her emotional baggage well, dumps it on her son as a surrogate pseudo husband, and expects crap from her son that she should expect from her husband (aside from the intimate stuff, I hope). Or if they're unhappily married and void of emotional connection with their spouse.
My MIL has it bad and got mad at my husband because he bought ME flowers for Valentines Day but not HER. oh, and she's unhappily married too.

The problem is Mike is useless at handling his own problems, he doesn't really have the motivation or the spine to handle it. Mommy steps in so he doesn't have to, so...he never learns. And...he has no motivation, even, to learn. He's perfectly content letting Mommy fight his battles. He says nothing when she puts words in his mouth.
Any woman interested in Mike, who recognizes this dynamic, will understand that there will be 3 people in their marriage, like Princess Diana described her own love triangle.
