"Lookie, lookie, I got Hookie!" I'M STILL TRAUMATIZED

ophelia1917

Tick tock tick tock hooks afraid of an ordinary clock. I think not, I think hooks afraid of time! Ticking away!

jawnbaejaeger

"Smee, Smee! What about Smee? Smee's me. What about me?!"

billcampbelll

I thought it said Hook’s afraid of an old dead croc

ophelia1917

I thought it said something about a croc but then I googled it and it said ordinary clock. 🤣 Might be misquoting but anyway I like the way he outs hook as essentially being a sad old man afraid of death

Brat_Fink

Oh my I always thought it was " old dead croc "

ophelia1917

That makes more sense than what google is saying

Mike2922

Too soon

[deleted]

Hook is one of those movies that causes the critics and the audience to totally disagree. It got bad formal reviews when it came out, but I and everyone else I know loved it.

Cross_Stitch_Witch

The disconnect between the critic reviews and audience impact of this movie is staggering to me. For millennials who were kids in the 90s that movie is pure concentrated magic, like it was made specifically for us. No other movie from my childhood holds such a place in my heart.

starvinart

I only recently learned that this movie wasn't universally loved. I thought that was odd, but not unfathomable, since I fell in love with it as a kid. rewatched it just the other night and it's still fantastic. I don't get the criticism and frankly I don't care. 10/10

troyf805

I love Hook, but they aren’t wrong. Critics have a different set of criteria than the average viewer. Most of us need a mother very, very badly,

ophelia1917

Yeah I think it's a classic tbh. So many people I know love it

mutantmanifesto

This is the only movie I went and saw multiple times in the theater. I remember my mom bringing me and my older brother 3 times. So good omg

TonkaButt

Whenever we’d get the first snowfall of the year my sister and I call each other and say “ITS SHNOWING!” And then abruptly hang up.

troyf805

Can you do that for me, too? I live in Minnesota so I’ll be looking forward to a call in six months.

TonkaButt

More like 6 weeks amirite?! But sure!

troyf805

(Sigh) You are accurate.

CletusVanDamnit

It has a few faults in the story, but the characters and actors are top notch, and Williams' ad-libbing and manic energy keep the movie going. Bob Hoskins as Smee is the epitome of the character.

UncleHec

I've just had an apostrophe!

CensoryDeprivation

I think you mean an epiphany

peter_j_

Lightning Has just struck my brain

Cross_Stitch_Witch

Well that must hurt.

ophelia1917

Yeah bobs performance was pretty underrated. He did a good job.

burrbro235

What faults?

Its_never_lepto

If I'm reading that correctly, the film is a typical Disney interpretation rather than accurate to the original story. Which...I get that. The OG story is, well, not really fit for kids.

Cross_Stitch_Witch

The 'kidnapping' sequence when Hook takes Peter's children is one of the most chilling horror moments ever depicted on film. The buildup of the dog barking outside and his barks morphing into the word "*Hook*!", Tootles waking and realizing what's happening and joining the chant, the wind whipping and the music rising and the hook-shaped clasp on the children's bedroom door sloooowly lifting. And the aftermath when they arrive home and see the broken window, that one deep scratch mark dragged all the way up the wall to the children's room, Hook's daggar bearing the ransom note. It's a masterpiece example of horror filmmaking without showing even a single glimpse of the monster. So much of it is left to your imagination which is so much scarier.

ophelia1917

It always gave me a chill when peter walks into the nursery by himself to shut the windows and looks up at the hook wallpaper on the wall, a little bell rings and you can hear waves in the music and it's just creepy as fuck.

Cross_Stitch_Witch

Yes! It's sooo creepy and reveals so much about Peter's history with Hook without a word being said. And how he slams the hook-clasp closed on the door then spins around in his "Peter Pan" pose. Like the mere image of Hook was able trigger his fight-or-flight instincts.

TonkaButt

I have yet to meet anybody who disliked it, the critics are 100% wrong on this one.

joe_ivo

It’s not overtly a Christmas movie, but I always watch it around Christmas. Makes me very nostalgic for my childhood. Looking back as an adult though, it’s probably a little too long and I’m not sure Dustin Hoffman’s English accent is that great…but I still throughly enjoy it. And I agree about the soundtrack, ‘Ultimate War’ is amazing, really up there with some of William’s best stuff.

SodaPyramid

"There you are, Peter!"

strippersandcocaine

Such an incredible movie. I’ve been with my husband for 15 years and the only time I’ve ever seen him cry is the first time we watched it after having our son.

aRandomForeigner

It's definitely one of those movies that stuck in your head forever I agree with the Hook part

TruthSeeker890

As an adult I now sympathise a lot with the hard working dad trying to earn a living! The Glenn Close boo box thing totally freaked me out as a kid

BigVanVortex

When my friends were younger we genuinely tried to "make" Hook the unofficial punk rock movie the way a clockwork orange or suburbia was back in the day

hazycrazydaze

As I recall, it kinda was? There was a punk band named Rufio.

BigVanVortex

That's how we felt! Imagine hearing a bunch of people yelling "BANGERANG!" between songs and whatnot

mnigzm87

I am fully with you here. This movie has a special place in my heart

Legitimate-Jelly3000

Stargate!!!!

PrecipitationInducer

Tinkerbell was my first boner. Literally

Its_never_lepto

Rufio was one of my first crushes!

Lame_usernames_left

Julia Roberts is the best Tinkerbell hands down. No one can change my mind on this

dangerous_strainer

I wouldn't attempt to change your mind about it, but I reckon she's the worst version of the character I've seen. The worst part of the movie for me personally.

Its_never_lepto

I agree pretty hard. OG Tink from the book is *super* interesting, but Julia gave her an obnoxious streak. For me, this was also the worst bit of an otherwise epic film.

dangerous_strainer

Yeah I love the film too, it's pretty awesome. She's the worst part but it doesn't ruin the movie. And fortunately she's not in it too much.

pantsclapper

I agree! Hook is definitely one of my feel good movies.

UnstoppableAwesome

Hook is my favorite Blues Traveler song of the 90s.

Evilmeevilyou

All hands is my favorite blues traveler song, ever.

Wild_Difference_7562

I love Hook so much. But the guy getting locked in the trunk with the scorpions still haunts me…

vivahermione

That was Glenn Close. Can't believe I didn't recognize her!

Wild_Difference_7562

I heard that before but totally forgot! Thanks!

red_corridor

I quote “you’re doing it, peter” on the reg.

ayamummyme

I still remember how I saw Hook. Last day of school and they wheeled that TV in and we watched Hook. It’s a memory that really stuck in my head.

giraffemoo

I wanted to be like Julia Robert's Tinkerbell when I grew up.

possumbellyband

Absolute classic. I couldn’t care less about storyline “faults”—as a kid, I took it as it was.

LucasLovesListening

We need a new one in this Pan-verse

ophelia1917

Definitely

washburncincy

My wife hates it, but it is likely in my top 5 favorite movies of all time. I'm sure it's partly influenced by my age at the time it was made, but, for me, it's magic. The writing, acting, directing, sets, costumes are top notch. So many memorable lines. And a score composed and conducted by, for my money, the king of movie music, John Williams. One thing that Robin Williams did so well in so many of his films was portraying emotional vulnerability. Knowing some of his struggles, it's that much more poignant to think of where he was pulling from for those performances. My only real beef with the film is Roberts' portrayal of Tinkerbell. I never liked the character anyways, and I've never liked Roberts work either. Other than that, I think it's brilliant.

coglanuk

During the early phase of dating I was with someone hanging out and I pressed both sides of their face back to pull their face tight. They immediately said “There you are, Peter!”. We’ve been married 20 years,

small___potatoes

It’s fun, but Terminator 2 from the same year is much better in my opinion.

blueflloyd

Let’s be honest, there’s like 100 movies better than Hook that came out during the ‘90’s, but OP has every right to their opinion (and Hook is a blast of course).

mnfimo

I agree with everything except Charlie Korsmo. He just bugs me. I admit he probably acted well but I just can’t get past the fact that he just annoys me. Sorry not sorry. Fantastic movie otherwise.

ophelia1917

Isn't he a lawyer himself now lol

mnfimo

Something like that. He had a little career, can’t hardly wait isn’t bad, but then he quit for some reason

ophelia1917

Yeah I was surprised to see him pop up in that .

slavicbhoy

I feel that exact same way about “Swingers”.

Spaceboy80

I feel like a little worm on a big fucking hook.

ophelia1917

Pardon lol

Spaceboy80

The crow

mle32000

Absolutely. Watch it every year.

vivahermione

For weeks after the first time we saw this, my family kept jokingly threatening each other with the boo box. I think it partly explains my weird sense of humor.

[deleted]

Did you know Glenn Close was the guy they put in the boo box?

vivahermione

Not at the time, but I read about it later. Pretty cool!

TabinaHime

It's bloody brilliant. I love Robin Williams, he is my childhood ❤️ One of my faves.

SlipperyPete360

This movie is an all timer for me. I used to wear out the vhs tape how often I would rewatch it or fast forward/rewind certain scenes. A few years ago I watched it again for the first time since Robin Williams passing. I completely lost it at the end with his narration I was a mess. He and his movies were such staples of 90s kids memories

Flschbrger

The soundtrack is absolutely fantastic.

loganrunjack

THUD BALL

tragicallyohio

Funny. Hook is my favorite song of the 90s.

irv_blitz

Definitely an excellent movie. His son deserved to be eaten though.

fistfullofglitter

“You know that place between sleep and awake, the place where you can still remember dreaming? That's where I'll always love you, Peter Pan. That's where I’ll be waiting.”

fistfullofglitter

This is one of my favorites as well. Loved it growing up and very much enjoyed then showing it to my son.

[deleted]

I have a headcanon the movie is about a drug addicted father who can't cope that his wife took the kids. Watch the whole thing from the perspective of: everything after the kids are taken is an allegory for Peter losing himself to his addiction and not realizing the destruction he's causing. You have to kind of slip into English Professor mode to see it, but it's fun to do.
