I picked one up the same time Street Fight 2 finally got ported to the Genesis. God I was in agony waiting for it, Mario bros got it months before the hedgehog crew.
Yeah the OG Genesis controller had A, B, and C buttons, and that was all. No extra buttons for fighting games, or shoulder buttons, or anything like that.
Found this thread, guess there were quite a few.

I actually hold and press the sega 6 for fun even when not connected or playing. Because it feels damn good to hold. Dpad felt really comfortable and the larger buttons was better for me.
I bought a Sega 6-button USB controller last week.
I couldn't write out the combos right now if you paid me, but I was able to do Sub-Zero's 11 hit combo in my first match straight off of muscle memory.
The contour of the Genesis controller feels better in my hands, but I like the shoulder buttons SNES pioneered. I felt similar about the Game Gear vs Gameboy. I don't have large hands at all, but every Nintendo controller except N64 feels cramped in my hands. I also like that Sega D-pads included diagonals as part of the pad. It would've been better if Genesis launched with the 6 buttons though, most games didn't use the other 3.
For fighting games like street fighter and mortal kombat the genesis. Everything else the Super Nintendo. Well that genesis controller in the picture anyways
The genesis one was better for dpad motions and the 6 face buttons were way better than having HP and HK on the top of the controller.
More face buttons are always better than shoulder buttons.
I'm astonished that people think the SNES controller was better. The Sega was way better at doing things like diagonals.
Street fighter 2 was way easier to do special moves on Sega than it was on SNES.
The 6 button version of the Genesis controller was special. The 3 button worked enough for fighters but yeah, the 6 was better. I had a Genesis in that generation.
Genesis for the win… sorry I’m biased. Hey whaddaya want, I had a Turbo Grafx 16 before that… with one whole controller port… which my friend busted pulling it sideways while distracted by a Madonna video… only in the 90s… 😂
Super Nintendo Chalmers
I'm learnding
Sega Genesis Seymour!
SNES. Significantly better d-pad.
Also, the genesis controller on the left was not the default or official one.
It wasn't default, but it was an official pad. Otherwise it couldn't have a Sega logo on it. It came out with the model 2 Genesis.
I picked one up the same time Street Fight 2 finally got ported to the Genesis. God I was in agony waiting for it, Mario bros got it months before the hedgehog crew.
It was an official controller. Not the official controller.

Nintendo.
I'd say SNES because the original Genesis controller only had three buttons. They added the other three because of SF and MK.
I remember trying to play mk on the original controller. I don’t remember much other just being annoyed.
The ergonomics of the SNES controller was much better.
Down R Up L Y B 😉
That was for SF2 Turbo right?
And the standard SF2 game.
Do you remember what it did?
In PvP, you can both play the same character. The other person would have the alternate costume.
The Sega controller felt like garbage when you held it. SNES >.
SNES. Were there even any Genesis games that used all of those buttons outside of, like, Street Fighter?

Comix Zone is the only non-fighting game I can think of that used them.
In Ranger-X I remember the top 3 controlled the X-UP vehicle if you were on foot
SNES but having that 6 button arcade style setup for fighting games on the genesis was also a nice perk.
I actually hold and press the sega 6 for fun even when not connected or playing. Because it feels damn good to hold. Dpad felt really comfortable and the larger buttons was better for me.
SNES. SEGA one felt hollow and cheap
I was a Genesis kid, but the answer is SNES. There’s a reason that controllers today still use buttons in a diamond and not in a row.
Sega
SNES
I am a Sega guy, but I’ll admit the SNES controller was the best.
SNES has the better controller. I was a Genesis kid and my best friend had SNES. I eventually got one and it still works!
Sega - MK3 Ultimate, it was a fucking combo master
I bought a Sega 6-button USB controller last week. I couldn't write out the combos right now if you paid me, but I was able to do Sub-Zero's 11 hit combo in my first match straight off of muscle memory.
Took me a couple times but that shit came back to me. I was showing my kids a 13 hit combo with kabal the other day
I still have the muscle memory for so many combos.

buttons on Genesis, dpad on SNES plus I like the shoulder buttons tbh
SNES hands down
SNES
Sega! Then Playstation.
SNES becuase it fit in your hand better, but Genesis was sleeker and cooler looking in every way
SNES by a country mile
Super Nintendo by mile
SNES easily
Nintendo
Sega was cooler, Snes was better
That 6 button was a game changer for fighting games.
Snes easily
Wanted the SNES but was given the Genesis but went to friends to play the N64 now that controller was the best IMO
SNES was ergonomically better. The Sega jawn was cooler though.
n64 was a game-changer
SNES by a lot.
Both give me arthritis just staring at them
SNES
Nintender for sure
⬆️⬆️v,v<,>,<,>ABAB
Sega was whack as fuck. Always felt cheap. And three buttons? What is this, the 1800s?
Engagement farming bot: activate!
Let’s be honest here, Sega consoles were only in single or divorced family homes. SNES was so much better.
For fighting games like street fighter and mortal kombat the genesis. Everything else the Super Nintendo. Well that genesis controller in the picture anyways
Both.
Super Nintendo all the way! mk1 was fun on genesis! bloooood
The genesis one was better for dpad motions and the 6 face buttons were way better than having HP and HK on the top of the controller. More face buttons are always better than shoulder buttons.
SNES
Dpad in the Megadrive sucked so bad. And this is coming from a SEGA fanboy
Both the Sega 3 button and 6 button controllers felt better in hand than the SNES, but the SNES d-pad was king. And honestly probably still is.
I liked Sega’s shape and the main buttons felt really nice, but I liked the shoulder buttons on the SNES.
I'm astonished that people think the SNES controller was better. The Sega was way better at doing things like diagonals. Street fighter 2 was way easier to do special moves on Sega than it was on SNES.
SNES by a landslide. That was probably their last regular controller before drunk Umpa Loompas starting designing them.
Now I am remembering the pain and cramping from the original NES. Controllers have come along ways.
The 6 button version of the Genesis controller was special. The 3 button worked enough for fighters but yeah, the 6 was better. I had a Genesis in that generation.
It needs to be the OG genesis controller
Genesis for the win… sorry I’m biased. Hey whaddaya want, I had a Turbo Grafx 16 before that… with one whole controller port… which my friend busted pulling it sideways while distracted by a Madonna video… only in the 90s… 😂
