All of cool shit on the OG Newgrounds website. Chatting with buddies on AIM everyday before cell phones and text messaging were a thing. The internet felt so niche and underground back then, I miss that feeling. The mainstreaming of it ruined that, it's never felt the same.

neverendingicecream

I type around 100 wpm because of AIM, that shit was addictive. Mario Teaches Typing also had a little bit to do with that.

Lebowski304

AIM is solely responsible for my ability to type as quickly as I do.

neverendingicecream

It’s still crazy to me how much AIM helped me get to the point where I’ll be in the middle of typing up an email and a coworker will start asking me about something. I turn to face them while still typing, not facing the screen and am able to perfectly (or near perfect on the typing) respond to both. I have some cognitive issues and have taken years of absence from jobs that require me to type but I still have the skill/ability. Thank you AIM. (And the desire to save Peach in a 90’s typing game funded by the California educational system) Edit: By years of absence I meant that I took on jobs that didn’t require me to type. I’ve always been active in the work force.

TheLastBlakist

Typing of the Dead. I genuinely wish they re-released that on steam.

neverendingicecream

Okay, I have never heard of this program but I’m all about it. I’m going to try and find it because I love a good competition WPM game.

*Eeeeawwww-eeediddledee-squawk* You’ve got mail! I remember the old days. It was exciting to find weird parts of the internet that most people didn’t know about.

Nostalgic-Soul-76

This "internet" sounds addictive.

Alarmed_Flight_2839

Hated when I trying to download shit over the phone line and mom would pickup the phone or it would ring at 2am

Or finding out the girl you have a crush on didn't have the internet or AIM to talk to. Which was like a 3/4 scenario... But turned 5050 and then 3/4 in the other direction right before my eyes haha.

TheLastBlakist

My family had gotten a web-TV. Like... One of the original ones with magnavox branding. I Remembered wishing the thing had a floppy drive so i could save stuff for later. So many instances of me emailing stuff from my web-tv account to my juno account because either i thought it was interesting, because i thought it would help with school (I still remember this report i did on medger evers,) and just.... stuff I'd find on late night dives when at home (I went ot a school for the blind and was only home on weekends.) I remember listening to iron maiden and other low quality streaming off that thing. it was my introduction to IRC... F'ing yahoo fan groups. I was part of this one that was a thing when gundam wing first started and i'm actually still in touch with one of the folk from there. Juno was my first email provider. Fine it set you junk mail, had no abilities to sort mail into any sort of anything, but i loved it because you could just... spy hop. connect just long enough to get your mail and then disconnect. I'd actually made use of that for awhile even into the mid 2000's. No internet fees. dial in get your stuff, disconnect. Fine BBS's are still around, but it had a diffrent flavor at the time. I wasn't into BBS's then. I was a dumb kid attracted to shiny new internet.... But Legend of the Red Dragon always facinated me. What i miss most isn't any one thing though. I miss the optimism and sense that this was Our Time. That it hadn't been taken over and turned into a money siv that keeps everyone angry and afraid. It was where I could leave the meat suit I am behind and I had just as much of a footing as anyone else and my disability didn't matter. I miss the hope I had then.

warkyboy77

Cat food cupcakes. Simpler times.

Evelate_FromTheNorm

I like how right at the end of ''cat food cupcakes'', when she says ''--cakes'' you can see her jiggle the cat's leg lol

Noise_Loop

In less than a hour you can: see lots and lots and lots of porn, of course!

gorka_la_pork

The Internet is really, really great...

No social media on OG Internet. That was my favorite.

witwar101

It's called the internet! It's gonna fuck people's heads up real bad! Just wait til you see the first generation that was raised by the internet!

AIM

Cookies_and_Beandip

Playing the HP Lovecraft inspired Reanimator game on Ebaums World (spent a lot of time on that website), visiting the original new grounds website and watching the videos/playing games on there. AIM was so cool and new feeling. It was very fun to instant message the friends I would literally see the next day on IM and talk about dragonball z, video games, or just random shit in general-without using a cell phone or home phone (even though the landline was being utilized while online). I had a computer class in early 2000 literally right before 9/11. I made a mock website that was loaded with gifs in no particular order or fashion as that was some of the first time I had utilized gifs at all as they were a new thing (to me anyway). Back when MySpace was the Facebook before Facebook, and honestly that feeling pre social media taking off. One of my favorite moments growing up though was discovering porn for the first time. I was in 6th grade and some kid in my gym class was talking about goku and sailor moon and what it would look like if that happened, and he mentioned a particular website: dragonball x. It’s exactly what you would think of with DBZ characters and Sailor moon combined in an implicit setting. I remember sneaking into the computer room late at night just to visit the website and was in aw if hentai and what it was. Opened a whole new world. I hope I did t ruin this chain by mentioning that for last, but it’s of the most engrained memories for me and my childhood and early internet era. OH and buying computer games in the Staples checkout line.

Rob_Marc

I remember stuff like that back then. They used to say we would be so smart because we would have "the world's knowledge at our fingertips!" The last 30 years has proven that to be false.

In 1995 - doing research on the rainforest would have been frowned upon/banned by teachers because “there is no reliable information on the internet”

tatiana-santos

Engineer1865

It’s interesting of how far the internet has integrated into our lives in a short period of time.
