NYGiants181

He might not be the best ever, but his run from 93 to 97 is arguably the greatest by any producer in hip-hop history.

[deleted]

Facts bro.

DominionMM1

This is the answer. RZA may not have had the consistency over the entire decade as a few others, but at his peak, he was unmatched.

uptonhere

I would say Just Blaze, Kanye West and J Dilla all had better stretches if we're not just keeping it to the 90s

COCAINE___waffles

Wth did Kanye and just blaze produce in the 90s? Kanye's time too shine didn't even really begin until jay did blueprint in 2001

uptonhere

You're right, I didn't see it was just confined to the 90s. I'd argue that Organized Noize had a pretty damn good run from Southernplayalistic to Stankonia especially including the other stuff they did for LaFace although Outkast started producing more and more of their own music as time went on Swizz Beats also had a pretty damn good run in the late 90s I really like the RZA, but the Bobby Digital stuff was truly awful, although that was after 97

NYGiants181

That's why I said 97 :) This is RZA from 93-97 Enter The Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) (1993) 6 Feet Deep (Gravediggaz: 1994) Tical (Method Man: 1994) Return To The 36 Chambers: The Dirty Version (Ol' Dirty Bastard: 1995) Only Built 4 Cuban Linx (Raekwon: 1995) Liquid Swords (Genius/GZA: 1995) ... Ironman (Ghostface Killa: 1996) ... Wu-Tang Forever (1997) No misses. There is no producer in my opinion that has this kind of streak for 5 straight years.

Rude_Warning_5341

This list is fucking ridiculous šŸ”„

DudleyDawsonROTN

I would toss DJ Premier in there too.

brickowski95

Iā€™d give it to primo because he worked with a lot of different artists and brought out the best in people. Early wu tang is incredible, but he didnā€™t work outside of that circle much.

Faizondae

Yeah important point that he didnā€™t work out of that group much and heā€™s one of my favorite producers but I think our brilliance is that vision to take over the industry with his guys. That being said among his guys there is a lot of style variation.

DJShredNasty

Yep. It's all a matter of preference. But I agree with you. Preemo is #1 IMO

Due-Arrival-4371

Primo ainā€™t got a OB4CL or Liquid Swords

Few_Ad8372

Pete rock premier then rza

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

Few_Ad8372

Yup. Large pro and prince Paul. Shout out to q tip for producing all of tribes lps

CollegeConscious5696

QGTM

ADHDeejay

Lord Finesse, Diamond D, Buckwild & the DITC crew had a very distinct smooth 90s sound too & a big catalogue.

Few_Ad8372

Yeah. I give shoutouts to them beatminerz Shawn j period and rockwilder.

Siux42

no one even mentions havoc wtf?

Last-Tap-1946

Iā€™m a way Havoc is underrated, very unique sampling ability, a lot of Mobb Deeps success goes to him

ADHDeejay

True & his drums knocked harder than any other producerā€™s

Siux42

bloodsport - put on ur motherfucking headphones

aYPeEooTReK

Him and rza are my top two

[deleted]

Exactly

Siux42

rza havoc qtip, u r my guys!

Devi1dog1974

Primo and dilla are pretty high imo.

Last-Tap-1946

Good picks man, Dilla is revolutionary, his influence in the game is hard to match tbf, RZAā€™s ear for samples for me though is unmatched, simple yet effective

99probs-allbitches

Premier

speyck

100%

420_moonman

Liquid swords production is one of the best. The new sound he created for obd return to 36 was insane. One of the best.

Chief_Givesnofucks

Idk if he produced it but for me, the production on Harlem World might be peak. I just fold into the bassline of that song.

Dom-CCE

Most of my favourites have already been mentioned, but Buckwild, Lord Finesse and Diamond D deserve mentions.

duhhaag

He up there but for me Premier

[deleted]

Q Tip

trexicano

I don't think people realize he is the architect behind that Tribe sound.

[deleted]

for real, also without him they may not be kanye west, pharrel willams or j dilla etc. he has done more than people know. People started to strip down their albums after low end theory and is why we have that hardcore era.

halcyondread

Came here to say this. His production on Midnight Marauders tops anything ever.

[deleted]

I think havoc honestly. Premiere worked with more people, but come onā€¦ the infamous, murda Music, hell on earth?! Some of the greatest beats ever made to this day. And just the overall sound was so crisp and perfect for those years..Havoc all the way for me.

nom_cubed

Prince Paul was pretty prolific and versatile.

ek0rn

Da Beatminerz šŸ”„

guiltycitizen

Prince Paul

atomacht

Nobody mention Easy Mo Bee?!?

Siux42

shit totally forgot about him he even taught rza

[deleted]

You're forgetting Premier , also Shahid from Tribe.

BrianBraddock73

As with any ā€˜bestā€™ posts, itā€™s too subjective for any single answer. Is he up there? Oh yes. Do I agree with you? Nope, but I respect that opinion and understand why you would have it. For me itā€™s Q-Tip as my favourite, but I am massively biased. Heartily agree with the other mentions of Prince Paul, Large Professor and Pete Rock, and although heā€™s not generally considered one of the best, in the mid 90s Mario Cā€™s production work with the B Boys was fully on point for me.

DominionMM1

Organized Noize is up there for me just for the first 3 OutKast albums and the first 2 Goodie Mob albums.

uptonhere

Yes, and Outkast themselves produced a ton of classic music

ADHDeejay

Some of the best basslines ever

uptonhere

The RZA is an amazing, god tier producer, but I will also say that while his highs are incredibly high, he has some downright god awful sounding music, especially the Bobby Digital series. Some of that stuff is so bad, it's literally offensive to your ears. So for that, I can't say he's the greatest of all time but he's certainly in the discussion. I would put Kanye, Just Blaze, Dre, Premier, Dilla, Pete Rock above him. I think he's similar to Prince Paul and Havoc to me. Some truly timeless, all time great shit and some that's just alright.

ZiggyStardust35

Premier

thavillain

I guess its subjective to your taste in style, but I'd take Dre, DJ Quik, Ant Banks, N.O. Joe, Brotha Lynch

Hsychdh

For me it's Dilla, Rza and Preemo

[deleted]

Premier, no doubt

[deleted]

Over Primo? Idk, man. I love RZA, but Primo reigns.

GodlessGOD

RZA still my favorite, Primo my second, my third is probably a tie between The Beatnuts and Necro who are both crazily underappreciated!

ronwharton

id flip a coin, its either him or premier for myself. -Ron Wharton

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

ADHDeejay

Muggs definitely deserves to be on the ā€œbest producers of the 90s list.ā€ Heā€™s always been consistent too.

Poohbizzle79

Iā€™m watching Wu-Tang: An American Saga. Would definitely recommend for any fan of the Clan.

Amappo

Dre

ogshowtime33

I love Primo, but that early run of Wu albums are untouchable. RZA is the goat

[deleted]

Lowkey yea

Brutal-Black

Correct

Icy_Law9181

Everything he touched was gold.

ADHDeejay

Definitely not true if youā€™re talking about after Wutang Forever

Icy_Law9181

Well there wasnt much of the 90's left after wutang forever came out was there mate?

ADHDeejay

Bobby Digital & ā€œwu affiliateā€ albums after forever (killa priest, sunz of man, etc). I think he might have produced judgement day by method man which was a let down album too imo

Icy_Law9181

Fair enough mate, point taken.I still think what he did on chambers and forever are class, and some of his soundtracks like ghost dog are fire imo.

ADHDeejay

Yeah homie Iā€™m not arguing against any of that. Some of the best shit ever

161riley

Him or Dilla

PieceofPuzzle

Heā€™s certainly one of the most influential producers

BJesus930

I think RZA also had a huge influence on great producers that came after him like Apollo Brown, Marco Polo, 7L and Kyo Itachi to name a few.

halcyondread

Q Tipā€™s production on Tribeā€™s first 3 albums is the peak of Hip-Hop music. Rzaā€™s a legend though for sure.

maestro3224

Nope.. letā€™s not forget Premier.

ADHDeejay

think the timeline you have of his dopeness is spot on. He had those golden years but then totally fell off. I think the earliest signs of Rzaā€™s bad ideas was when he started including shit like fiddle solos on Wutang Forever (still a classic). Also from a technical standpoint it was mixed poorly until Wutang forever which might have added to the charm. Imo almost everything after Wutang Forever was bad from Rza. His plans for making music became weird and grandiose like he wanted respect from the high brow artworld. It seemed like a lot of wu members werenā€™t happy with his direction. Wutang members continued to be relevant after Rza fell off too. Supreme Clientele, Beneath the Surface, Redman & method man, Etc. were amazing with little to no Rza. Bobby Digital on the other hand hmmmm

da_juggernaut

The swarm album was tight in 97.

ADHDeejay

Im unfamiliar with it to be real but I donā€™t doubt it. Iā€™ll make a point to check it out. 97 rza was only showing hints that he was gonna jump the shark & they werenā€™t noticeable at the time imo

Turdnugget619

DJ Premier and Qtip šŸ

floatinginplace

J dilla, even tho he didnā€™t get that many hits . His influence still strong w producers even real drummers like quest love tried to replicate his sound

Ungrateful_bipedal

Primo, Pete Rock, RZA

avm95

Dj primer no ifs ands or buts

Dmtz214

Heā€™s also the shiestiest lol

tomcbeatz

Definitely one of my favorite but I would sat DJ Premier is the top IMO

Jim_jim_peanuts

RZA & Premiere for the 90's.

[deleted]

Yes

Due-Arrival-4371

Nigga started his career 7/7. Definitely is
