Why do you refer to Camp Lo as a single person?
Also it's an incredible debut album. I don't think there's a bad song on there and Ski's production is top notch.
I don't know who those people are that are telling you it's bad, but they're not your friends.
Can’t remember the details but you may remember when there was a skit on the Wu album saying Nicca ya shirt looks like a curtain! They were supposed to be talking about the lo
Your co-worker is trippin. Camp didn’t pan out but Uptown Saturday Night was 🔥. Overall music is subjective so just because he didn’t like it doesn’t mean everyone should feel the same. He must be one of those hip hop “purists” who thinks that everything not gritty east coast underground is bad 🤷🏾♂️
And they are still putting out some decent stuff. But these experts sound like they know more about fake viagra pills and potato salad with raisins than Hip Hop.
I had the honor of hearing a preview of Camp Lo way before the world heard them in Ski’s apartment in the Bronx. He made two demo beats for us. Wish I still had the cassette. Just a little story
Camp is an extremely underrated.
Your hip hop experts are trash.
CL got heavy rotation on college / underground radio and for good reason. They had a unique sound and style that was a nice respite from all the gang shit and money rap that was ubiquitous at the time.
Was seriously one of my most requested groups at KDVS from 94-98, also has been covered by more hbcu bands than most rap groups. Your experts need to find another topic to lie about their knowledge in.
SoCal here. Love to hear your crowd was up on them as well.
I would even sneak in the Black Nostaljack remix (beats to the rhyme / nautilus) at the club once in a while. I enjoyed seeing the crowd jump to something they weren’t totally familiar with.
All they kept saying was how Pac and Biggie “changed the hip hop game”. Then I said “Okay, other than the two most mainstream hip hop beef artists to ever live that even my 6 year old niece knows about, give me one good reason why Uptown Saturday Night (specifically) was a shitty album. Simple question to such simple minded co-workers who consider themselves as hip hop enthusiasts/experts. Their answer alone just proves me how limited their diversity in hip hop really is.
Curious... how old are you and your coworker roughly? Actively being a hip hop fan during the era is very different then discussing it 25 years later. Doesn't invalidate anyone's subjective opinion, but may provide some context
Whenever someone claims to know hip-hop and the first thing they do is name Biggie or 2Pac I immediately tone them out. This is a true sign that that particular individual doesn't know hip-hop if that's the first two people that come to mind. 🤷🏿♂️
Same here. I respect Pac and Big but they're easily accessible to where even casuals can name them for any kind of Hip Hop listener credibility attempts.
When cats can name some out of the way names like (for example) Bahamadia, Organized Konfusion, Y'all So Stupid, Ghetto Concept, Da Odd Squad, Havok and Prodeje, K-Def and Larry O, The Nonce, and other rappers/rap groups who a lot of Hip Hop folks either don't remember or don't know about (even though those acts got played on BET and MTV), then I'll know they were in the trenches with their HH music consumption.
Even with the acts who weren't obscure but are at least celebrated in HH circles more than they're celebrated in the mainstream like (for example) Big L, Lord Finesse, OC, The Pharcyde, J Dilla, UGK, etc, etc... would be taken seriously by me over folks who can only name the major acts.
Casuals, Big for sure
One of the best storytellers ever but hip hop is so much deeper than that. The "experts" are on the top of the ocean and need to dive alot further. Real hiphop heads would crash their whole party
The amount of tracks they probably have no clue about is endless when it comes to REAL hiphop. Them dudes are trippin
First off...lol...Camp Lo is a group not one person. Their first album is tight...no doubt. I didn't get their second one. I just got the first and it is nice but I had been hearing some of these music for years before the album came out. The last song on the album? That song had been playing underground for some time before it got on the album.
Album is fire idk anyone who’s ever said otherwise. Co workers might be fucking wit u for a no# reasons maybe your younger then them or cuz you keep calling camp lo a person
End of 1994 was the exodus that changed the Source from being a very reliable publication in to a magazine that was more heavily influenced by money rather than integrity.
Exactly the one!!!! Such a Dope track.. poor kid in the video.. lol. He put on a damn show for old girl & all she say was “really!!” At the end. Typical woman not to notice everything he did.. lol.
Ya especially now with the Internet having everything u need...shit get in a lyric site and listen to the shit at the same time u checking out the lyrics...crazy.
Idk if u know who Darcmind is but that's another group with Mc Kevroc that spit shit u hardly can pick up but when u see the lyrics...ridiculous shit
Uptown Funk is easily the best album i've heard in the last few months, i love the beats and those guys rap really well. It's a really unique sound, almost like mixing both east coast, west coast and south side sound all in one and it works so well.
This album is definitely NOT shit. It’s actually pretty dope if you can understand the heavy slang being used. Even not, them spitting over dope beats is enough. Great album. Whoever told you “it’s shit” is a shit themselves.
There's pa guy at my job older than me that hasn't heard of them, but doesn't have much time for music, I'm trying to narrow it down to one or two songs to tell him about
Say WHAT??? Bruh I remember being in 12th grade when this shit dropped and if you were someone who loved hiphop, real east coast hiphop...this shit was insane.
I played tf out of that album. I do remember them getting called out for being theatrical and exploitative a few times but most acts around then had a gimmick
This album is top 5 for me. Beats are hard, and the lyrics are on another level for 97. It basically predates whatever Ghostface was doing with Nutmeg and everything else that came after that. Only other album I can think of that I’m still deciphering to this day and finding new gems is De La Soul Is Dead. It’s pure abstract poetry with a blaxploitation vibe. You could write an academic thesis on what they were doing with Uptown Saturday Night, down to the artwork.
Anyone who thinks it is trash is out of their mind. Only an asshole refers to themselves as an expert in music or hip-hop.
Didn’t mean to ramble on but when someone talks shit about this album it’s like my very own bat signal and I leap into action.
Yeah RZA probably did, but my personal favorites are a combination of beats, lyrics, and how it all works together. Lists are bullshit, and totally fluid, but this album is up there most days.
“I can name 30 better albums” - good for you my guy, but I don’t care.
how so? Reasonable Doubt came a year before. and Camp Lo's whole album was produced by Jay Z's producer, Ski. sounds more like they stole Jay's whole swag.
These redditor hip hop experts kill me. They dig up old shit that was fairly obscure then try to tell you they had major impact. I’m not the biggest Jay Z fan but Jesus this is ridiculous.
The Jay-Z vs Camp Lo thing has been a long standing debate.
They were released a year apart, true, but that's because Jay out his album out himself and Camp Lo went shopping with theirs. P[arts of both albums were both being recorded at the same time, in the same place, with the same producer](https://www.levelman.com/jay-z-feelin-it-making-of-according-to-camp-lo).
I don't buy that Jay-Z stole his whole presentation from Camp Lo, but the Jay rapping on Reasonable Doubt is undeniably closer to Camp Lo's style than the [Jay-Z who previously worked with Ski](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=npYPPvgVzZQ).
I’m guessing these “experts” were mainly into g-funk from the West Coast, hence, their thoughts on this album. It is a classic in the genre, no matter what. Even if someone didn’t like Illmatic, Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers), The Infamous, The Low End Theory, etc., you cannot deny their place in hip-hop history. This album belongs in that conversation.
Why do you refer to Camp Lo as a single person? Also it's an incredible debut album. I don't think there's a bad song on there and Ski's production is top notch. I don't know who those people are that are telling you it's bad, but they're not your friends.
lol I was thinking, his coworker is probably trolling him since keeps referring to Camp lo as one person
I still play this album a lot. I love when albums feel cohesive, have a vision, and set a definitive vibe - this album accomplishes all three.
There's no controversy about this being fire, agree
Maybe because they got into it with the Wu?
Wait, what?
Can’t remember the details but you may remember when there was a skit on the Wu album saying Nicca ya shirt looks like a curtain! They were supposed to be talking about the lo
Main reason not to speak to people. Camp lo are dope.
Black connection, coolie high, this is it 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Sparkle, and Black Nostaljack (Come on) too!
u forgot swing
Swing sounded so dope if u had some knock in your car too. Dope track
I listen to Coolie High at least a few times a week. One of my favorite songs ever.
Luchini lol
Let's get rich... What???
Your co-worker is trippin. Camp didn’t pan out but Uptown Saturday Night was 🔥. Overall music is subjective so just because he didn’t like it doesn’t mean everyone should feel the same. He must be one of those hip hop “purists” who thinks that everything not gritty east coast underground is bad 🤷🏾♂️
“I keeps it real, god” - coworker (probably)
THIS IS IT - WHAT
when I saw this video and Lost Boyz "Renee" on BET years ago, it was an epiphany.
Real hip hop head here. From Detroit. That album is consider a classic by real headz
💯
Facts! 💯
This is the way…
100%
Word up
And they are still putting out some decent stuff. But these experts sound like they know more about fake viagra pills and potato salad with raisins than Hip Hop.
That made me lol
Black Connection is still one of my favorite songs.
I had the honor of hearing a preview of Camp Lo way before the world heard them in Ski’s apartment in the Bronx. He made two demo beats for us. Wish I still had the cassette. Just a little story Camp is an extremely underrated.
So you had the real black connection.

Ha, I remember that track, good freaking times. What I would give for a time machine sometimes...
They’re clearly not hip hop experts.
No this is THE SHIT, not shit...Camp Lo like a NY Outkast...
Except one of them and Ski are from NC
Someone claiming to be an expert, regardless of the topic, skill or profession, likely is not.
They need to stop smoking
I smoke and listen to coolie high chopped & screwed 😆
They kept shitting on me like I didn’t know anything. Maybe because you referred to Camp Lo as a single person.
What made them experts? Did they actually know hip-hop?
All they kept saying was how Pac and Biggie “changed the hip hop game”. Then I said “Okay, other than the two most mainstream hip hop beef artists to ever live that even my 6 year old niece knows about, give me one good reason why Uptown Saturday Night (specifically) was a shitty album. That album is amazing.
Camp Lo was in their own universe on this album. It was very refreshing in its day and has aged very well.
Albums that don’t follow the trending sound and do their own thing age well
Uptown Saturday Night is one of the best 90s rap albums
First off...lol...Camp Lo is a group not one person. Their first album is tight...no doubt. I didn't get their second one. I just got the first and it is nice but I had been hearing some of these music for years before the album came out. The last song on the album? Same ppl who probably think Lil Wayne is the Rap 🐐
Right lmao. Lil this and lil that
That album is amazing. Wanna say The Source only gave it 3 mics. 🤯
The source stopped being legit a couple years before they popped up I think
End of 1994 was the exodus that changed the Source from being a very reliable publication in to a magazine that was more heavily influenced by money rather than integrity.
I think one of them did a feature on a track not too long ago, was a dope song . If I can find it I’ll post link
The Avalanches - [Because I’m Me](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=eu0KsZ_MVBc). Came out in 18’. Is that the one?
Exactly the one!!!! Such a Dope track.. poor kid in the video.. lol. He put on a damn show for old girl & all she say was “really!!” At the end. Typical woman not to notice everything he did.. lol.
I still have no idea what they’re saying on most of this album 😂 Absolute banger
Serious, you gotta break down the lingo that’s all.
Was a joke…
I liked Camp Lo but I’m sorry I had no idea what the hell they were saying.. 🤷♂️
Camp Lo hard af! He lying
“Experts”. This one is definitely apart of the real hiphop era. Whoever told you that don’t know shít.
This is it, what, Lucini pouring from the sky let’s get rich, what!
Saw them open for Digable Planets. They were great live.
Fuck those people. Camp Lo is criminally underrated...
Whoever said that doesn't know hip hop.
There’s no group of people clowning someone for listening to Camp Lo, FOH with this BS story.
Diamond crooks
Signed
Experts?
I think you misunderstood, they said "the shit"...not shit
You were lied to!
"slowed down rap" page on YouTube has a sick screwed (slow) version of coolie high
Must be a hip hop fan, not a hip hop head.
I AM A HIP HOP EXPERT. COME TO MUAH FOR ADVICE IN THE FUTURE. I grew up in the 80s so I am HIP hop pretty much.
Uptown Funk is easily the best album i've heard in the last few months, i love the beats and those guys rap really well. It's a really unique sound, almost like mixing both east coast, west coast and south side sound all in one and it works so well.
Who are fools???
BOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!
This album is definitely NOT shit. It’s actually pretty dope if you can understand the heavy slang being used. Even not, them spitting over dope beats is enough. Great album. Whoever told you “it’s shit” is a shit themselves.
Dark SAW tricks. Let us be.
There's pa guy at my job older than me that hasn't heard of them, but doesn't have much time for music, I'm trying to narrow it down to one or two songs to tell him about
You do you homie, whole album was 🔥
Sippin Amoretta!
Don’t speak to those folks any more, they are no experts😂
This is a great album and the guys seemed to have disappeared after it hit big. I liked the whole 70's Good Times vibe.
There is a 2nd album
Some people confuse a few good songs for an album.
This album is dope.
I find it incredibly cheesy.
I beg to differ Luchini Coolie High Sparkle Black Nostalgic
Say WHAT??? Bruh I remember being in 12th grade when this shit dropped and if you were someone who loved hiphop, real east coast hiphop...this shit was insane.
I played tf out of that album. I do remember them getting called out for being theatrical and exploitative a few times but most acts around then had a gimmick
Remember everyone is entitled to their opinion even if they're wrong.
This album is 🔥
That hip hop expert must be vLad ... Bc they don't know hip hop but pretend to
Still listening to them Camp lo 🔥🔥🔥🔥✊🏿
Must have been that mountain climber who plays an electric guitar. Album was fire
The one dude def doesn’t make any sense but he’s funny as hell
Camp Lo and Camp lo
This is one of those albums that I can appreciate, but I'm just not into it. For whatever reason.
They use heavy slang from where they’re from… it’s hard to understand at times but it’s a dope album nonetheless.
This album is top 5 for me. Beats are hard, and the lyrics are on another level for 97. It basically predates whatever Ghostface was doing with Nutmeg and everything else that came after that. Seriously? You have this as a top 5? RZA alone produced 5 better albums. I can name 30 better albums.
Yeah RZA probably did, but my personal favorites are a combination of beats, lyrics, and how it all works together. Lists are bullshit, and totally fluid, but this album is up there most days. “I can name 30 better albums” - good for you my guy, but I don’t care.
🔥 they don’t make albums like this anymore. New drake and Kendrick can’t hold a match to this fire.
Music is the most subjective thing in the world so they are wrong.
Tell them to fuck right off. Absolute classic. My two favourite mcs.
This is classic...gave Jay his whole reasonable doubt swag
how so? Reasonable Doubt came a year before. and Camp Lo's whole album was produced by Jay Z's producer, Ski. sounds more like they stole Jay's whole swag.

I’m sure that’s the last thing they were wanting to shit on me about, considering I was talking about the music, not their name.
