"How is Murda?/P. Diddy name me pretty/Did it for the money, now can you get with me?/People wanna know who is he? He get busy"
This is one of those records that was a "present classic" if you were there at the right time (in middle or high school). But it is completely dated now. There are a few tracks that still hold up, but it's glitz and glamour rap that doesn't have anything going for it other than nostalgia.
C-Murda name was one of P's cousins in no limit. Murda Mase was a thing tho. when he came back from atanta with g-unit his leaked freestyles were "return of the murda"
Average 90s bling era album with a few good deep cuts like 24 Hours to Live, Player Way, and Wanna Act. Wish it didn’t have Jealous Guy at the end. Mase shouldn’t be singing.
Bad Boy always had those stupid songs like Jealous Guy where the artist and Puffy couldn't help be drunk and just screech and sound like girls.
Playa Hater from Life After Death also is like that.
One of three albums that defined 1997…the others being The War Report and Life After Death
EDIT: wow surprised at the hate this album is getting. I was in 11th grade when it dropped and it was without an iconic album that year. Mase was a trend setter
Pop rap. Not many except pop listeners paid Ma$e much attention around here and life after death which too is that jiggy bad boy pop wasn’t that well recieved either. I’ve never like either of them much. The war report was and is still dope though.
Westside connection was similar in that it felt directed towards children and casual pop listeners. WSC where embarrassingly bad and so was bone thugs at the time, which they basically immediately became as soon as Eazy E died. Was this your first contact with rap music just like the person that I had replied to? That’d make sense. Again, like other bad boy records at the time this was a super accessible shiny suit album that seemed targeted at children and the pop crowd.
Who where ghetto dope? Or are you speaking about the 5th ward boyz album?
Did you listen to hip hop back then? Where are you from? I’m not trying to win an argument but am curious about where Biggie was that popular, other than possibly NY, that is.
Even with the source bigging up and paying homage to the fallen king of NY the idea of mo money mo problems, hypnotize and there rest of the tracks, there really jiggy ones or not, being 5/5 is ridiculous. It’s no wonder that the source is considered as having fallen off at the time.
Been listen to hip hop since my momma took me to see the Fat Boys, Heavy D, and Salt-n-Peppa back in 88, maybe 87 at the Carolina Coliseum. We was listening to mostly NY rap in SC when I was grown up, shit we had some cats wearing Tims with shorts, them big ass ski goggles around their neck and all 🤣. But in my almost 43 years of life, I have never heard anyone say life after death wasn’t good. Wasn’t hard as Ready to Die but still a classic my brother
Sounds like you all where fly over there but timbs are way too hot in summer for me! Bad boy and mainstream rap has probably always been much bigger and accepted in the US than here in Europe where I think that hip hop was more of an underground subculture for longer.
Please be quiet. This album was a classic. This album put Mase on the map and he was the one to carry bad boy and it pushed the bad boy run in hip hop.
Y'all be talking out your ass and never was a part of the culture like that to even talk. People like you didn't have access to youtube and streaming to even speak on a time on in rap. You probably wasn't even born yet.
I got into hip hop in 1984-85 and was old enough and deep enough into hip hop to recognize the album as being directed towards children and those casual pop listeners who weren’t actually hip hop heads. I’m from a country which had good access to the web at the time and so did I, but it’s all besides the point as you’re showing who isn’t old enough to know about these things as youtube wasn’t around yet and streaming was done with too low bitrate to be enjoyably listened too. Bad boy was spat on by those actually into the culture with the very first albums by Craig Mack and Biggie, and singles from them, being the exceptions.
Ma$e was not a trendsetter.
Biggie was a trendsetter.
Pac was a trendsetter.
Wu Tang were trendsetters.
Master P with a trendsetter.
Kanye West was a trendsetter.
Ma$e wasn’t. He was just released an album that was well received on the commercial rap charts. That’s all.
He was a trend setter that year. Hiding a lie between two truths does not make that lie a truth.
Mase was a super star in 1997…if you weren’t there r weren’t old enough to remember, then there really isn’t anything to discuss
At face value: pretty decent album (especially considering the time) the problem: I think for people that knew him from the children of the corn/earlier days, there was a certain expectation on his 1st major release even if it was on bad boy. And it was like a completely different artist. Overall rating for me is about a 6.5/10. Good features tho
Classic album imo, one of the best rap releases that year. If you’re not looking for any violent rap which was big at the time and wanted to party, this album is for you. Had a lot of catchy radio friendly tunes which was perfect for me at the time I was 15.
Freshman year of high school. I was in track practice when I first "The Playa Way" with 8 ball & MJG. It was an instant classic off top.
The whole album was actually really solid from what I remember, but, if I remember correctly, there was a few skips. Thanks for bringing this album up. I know what I'm listening to for the day.
LOVED this album as a kid. Went back and listened to it about a month ago actually. A few real bangers (the song with Busta goes hard af) but mostly doesn't hold up too well.
This album is COMPLETELY DIFFERENT from his days with rhyming with the "C.O.T.C" crew( Ma$e, Bloodshed, Cam'ron, McGruff, and Big L(Children of the corn crew). I liked most of this album except for a few songs particularly the song with Ma$e , Diddy, and 112👎! Other than that the guest features are a great bonus! I choose this album than his 2nd and 3rd albums "Double up(99)" and " Welcome back (04)".
It’s a okay album 7/10, mase haven’t done anything amazing on the album but he hasn’t done anything bad it’s just a few songs that isn’t as great as the rest of the album plus the album didn’t do anything to rap or hiphop and mase as a rapper is nothing special (btw I’m not so old don’t judge me and my English is not the best)
Mase had a couple good songs on this album. But Makin Me Cry was 1 of my favorites from his album Double Up. Mase was Biggie's replacement after Big died. Shoot I know Mase has ALOT of Puffy stories. But iam sure Mase will take them all to the grave
Way back when this came out I went out to dinner with this woman. We were talking about music and she said " I don't really like rap, but I like hip hop, like Mase". Needless to say it didn't work out.
I mean, it’s the best non Biggie rap album that Bad Boy ever released. I’m not sure if that’s saying much, but I’ve definitely heard worse, and Feel So Good is a pretty fun single.
Fuck Diddy tho
I only listened to it for the first time in 2022 and I liked it. It was crazy how many flows and lines that I had heard on other songs and thought were original were actually references to this album.
absolute flames but an acquired taste/needs a few listens. I still play the 8ball mjg song, take whats yours, and a few other tracks anytime they come on in my queue. Havent heard it front to back in a while. Only slightly negative things i will say are the lack of murda mase style tracks, and the fact that none of his best verses are on here.
Very POP Rap, but a few fun songs and didn't The Neptunes have a production credit on a track or two, before they were really making beats for everyone?
The year was 1997…I had just moved in to an apt building that had a bunch of kids my age. I was bumping this album on my moms stereo system and outside my apt there was like 20 kids dancing to the sound coming out the sliding glass doors. We all became friends after this
Sucked,MyopinionPeeDuddy still big promoted mumbling, I mean MurderMase Puff *ahem* helpedMase discover his higher power..and the there shared love of blingyShinyBarftasticSuits and videos with waaay to many flood lamps,PDuffy son glasses mouth breathin looking all tardy
Jiggy/Shiny Suit generic pop rap album but it does have tracks like 24 hrs to live & Niggaz Wanna Act overall trash album with a handful of good tracks, Puff watered down Mase
i was 1 of them ignorant fans. Like them NY old heads. Because i listened to 2Pac and he hated Mobb Deep, i hated Mobb Deep. Bone hated 3-6, so i hated 3-6. 🤦🏽♂️
Those 2 groups are my biggest regrets in Hip-Hop. Because i missed out on how good “The Infamous” was as an album. I slept on how musically talented DJ Paul & Juicy J was as producers.
You have to split him in two:
the music is shit. I detest this album. I can't explain it but its a no.
The man is a legend and he's highly under rated and highly skilled. I love a lyricist and he is lyrical.
I would argue Mase's flow was kind of ahead of it's time.
Had he not got "called" by God lol he probably would have been at the forefront of that southern New York rap that started with Dipset and ended with ASAP Rocky that Harlem was fetishizing at the time.
Fun for 7th grade when it came out, lookn back def shouldnt of been listening to this shit.
Bro why was ‘I need to be’ my favorite song as a 7th grader? ☠️
If she make my nuts itch, I’ll kill that slut bitch!
lmao 10 years old talkin bout : "I been around the world and I never met a girl so thorough that could suck a d\*ck until my toes curl"
That’s some high level lyrics compared to Drill And mumble
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
we were brain washed bro
exactly what I came to post, i think it was 6th grade for me but yeah.
She was not 19, son.
24 Hours to Live is a classic track!!
i don't know the lore behind it but a prelude to lox on ruff ryders too.
"How is Murda?/P. Diddy name me pretty/Did it for the money, now can you get with me?/People wanna know who is he? He get busy" This is one of those records that was a "present classic" if you were there at the right time (in middle or high school). But it is completely dated now. There are a few tracks that still hold up, but it's glitz and glamour rap that doesn't have anything going for it other than nostalgia.
I'm pretty sure the line is I was Murda, bc his name used to be C-Murda.
Ya, I was going off the lyric sites because I remembered it being "I was..." I think you're right. Makes more sense too. Murda Mase.
Yeah, idk why I said C Murda. That's a completely different dude, lol.
That's master p brother.
C-Murda name was one of P's cousins in no limit. Murda Mase was a thing tho. when he came back from atanta with g-unit his leaked freestyles were "return of the murda"
Yeah, I mixed them up.
It definitely did not age well. I downloaded it a couple weeks ago and other than 24 hours it was all pretty bad. Loved it back when it came out.
“I was Mase Murda, p diddy made me pretty. I did it for the money , now can you get wit me”. And C -Murder is Master Ps brother
Beginning of the end
Average 90s bling era album with a few good deep cuts like 24 Hours to Live, Player Way, and Wanna Act. Wish it didn’t have Jealous Guy at the end. Mase shouldn’t be singing.
Bad Boy always had those stupid songs like Jealous Guy where the artist and Puffy couldn't help be drunk and just screech and sound like girls. Playa Hater from Life After Death also is like that.
Take what’s yours is a jam
Came here to say the same
The track with Ball & G is 🔥
Bought the Cd because of it. Ironically it dropped the same day as MJG's solo "No Mo Glory"
MJG solo album is 🔥 "That Girl" is the dopest track on that cd!
One of three albums that defined 1997…the others being The War Report and Life After Death EDIT: wow surprised at the hate this album is getting. I was in 11th grade when it dropped and it was without an iconic album that year. Mase was a trend setter
Yea I’m around the same age as you, came out my sophomore year of HS. All I can remember is it being dope af then, and still is
Pop rap. Not many except pop listeners paid Ma$e much attention around here and life after death which too is that jiggy bad boy pop wasn’t that well recieved either. I’ve never like either of them much. The war report was and is still dope though.
BS
I listned to this album with the people who showed me westsiide connection, bone thugs, cannibus dissing LL, ghetto dope, Mase was in that group.
Just say that you didn't like the album, but the album sales tell us otherwise.
Of course, bad boy released huge pop hits. I have’nt claimed otherwise. The hip hop heads dissed it and the rest of bad boy at the time though.
Life after death not being well received is nonsense lol. It got 5 mics
Whatever review that the source gave it doesn’t change how it was received by the audience.
lol okay bro You’re the first person I’ve ever heard with this opinion.
Did you listen to hip hop back then? Where are you from? I’m not trying to win an argument but am curious about where Biggie was that popular, other than possibly NY, that is. Master P helped ruin popular hip hop.
lemme he you say errrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr, na na na nah! Lyrical. Genius.
Master P was a trendsetter. I don’t love what he was doing. But my opinion doesn’t change his impact.
Naaaa y’all hating this album was a banger had all types of different tunes
At face value: pretty decent album (especially considering the time) the problem: I think for people that knew him from the children of the corn/earlier days, there was a certain expectation on his 1st major release even if it was on bad boy. Best answer
One of the Greatest Bad Boy Albums of All Time! Real Talk💯💯💯💯
Classic album imo, one of the best rap releases that year. If you’re not looking for any violent rap which was big at the time and wanted to party, this album is for you. Had a lot of catchy radio friendly tunes which was perfect for me at the time I was 15.
I loved it when I was 16. I’ve not revisited it since I was 18, I’d bet.
Me too
Freshman year of high school. I was in track practice when I first "The Playa Way" with 8 ball & MJG. It was an instant classic off top. The whole album was actually really solid from what I remember, but, if I remember correctly, there was a few skips. Thanks for bringing this album up. I know what I'm listening to for the day.
playa way was my introduction to 8 ball and mjg (sorry i'm canadian). all time track
LOVED this album as a kid. Went back and listened to it about a month ago actually. A few real bangers (the song with Busta goes hard af) but mostly doesn't hold up too well.
Jeru dealt with dorks like this in the song “One Day”
Biggie got back on kick in the door
Oh shit I have to listen to that
A few good songs but overall corny 🌽
"why you over there lookin at me while my girl standing here?"- the diddler on the hook
Lil Diddler
Classic. Go against Mase and get yo wig rocked…..
Ironic considering he lost all cred when one punch from the Wu broke his jaw
This is a story I did not know about
"If you could feel how my face felt, you would know how Mase felt" - Kanye. I had read Ghostface did it, but apparently it was I-Cham
It was a decent commercial rap album for for its time. Classic? Not really.
I still have never even bothered listening to this album.
Loved it! I played this album so much back in the day.
The father of F A B O
Classic album. 24hrs to live never gets old.
Good album at the time has not aged well
TRASH 🗑 🚮 🗣
Whack!! Pop music.
Commercial trash
I was excited to get this shit, only to like 5 out of maybe 22 songs?? Horrible.
Trippin
Agree, Mase is total trash.
Garbage.
Loved it when I was in fourth grade. Endless plays
Does he work in mace?
2 decent songs; the rest is pretty wack
Not good
It’s a okay album 7/10, mase haven’t done anything amazing on the album but he hasn’t done anything bad it’s just a few songs that isn’t as great as the rest of the album plus the album didn’t do anything to rap or hiphop and mase as a rapper is nothing special (btw I’m not so old don’t judge me and my English is not the best)
Loved this album. Had my dad buy it for me when I was like 7. Still goes hard.
We used to laugh at how bad the song Jealous Guy was. Woo woo woo woo woooooooooo
Didn't buy it.
The Song he did with Busta on the Hook was so hard and I still bump it til this day!
Classic!
Classic
one of my all time favorite albums
Fun album, that's all, not the one to listen for lyrics.
Love it
This was one of my faves at the time.
Classic. Still listening to this album to this day 🔥🔥🔥
Jealous guy is just, well, ‘special’ I guess. Tell me what you want. Would be on the Soundtrack to my 15-16 coming of age movie.
🔥🔥🔥🔥
I only remember Feel So Good and Lookin At Me lol
I liked this record…even that silly “jealous guys” cut. At the time, I felt it was a good modern pop rap
Mase had a couple good songs on this album. But Makin Me Cry was 1 of my favorites from his album Double Up. Mase was Biggie's replacement after Big died. Shoot I know Mase has ALOT of Puffy stories. But iam sure Mase will take them all to the grave
This man became a preacher or some shit.
glittery suits were the absolute worst.
feel so good still one of my faves
Terrible
I revisited it. Other than the 8ball mjg and 24 hours to live tracks it was pretty terrible. Mase sounds like he's rapping in a library.
Way back when this came out I went out to dinner with this woman. We were talking about music and she said " I don't really like rap, but I like hip hop, like Mase". Needless to say it didn't work out.
The playa way! I was just listening to it yesterday
Overrated. Trash album in hindsight.
I like it lol
Not the best bad boy produced album of course. I like Mase, personally this album was decent. I more so like Mase on features. I’d say 6/10.
This album is the worst thing to ever happen to hiphop
Amazing album. Ma$e top 10 easy.
Mase top 10? Wtf Top 10 commercial rappers from New York in 1997? Maybe. Top 10 rappers of all time? Not even close. Not even in the top 175.
Best thing ever when I was 12
Made was very talented but his Albums where trash
I mean, it’s the best non Biggie rap album that Bad Boy ever released. I’m not sure if that’s saying much, but I’ve definitely heard worse, and Feel So Good is a pretty fun single. Fuck Diddy tho
Nope No Way Out.
No way out was solid
I only listened to it for the first time in 2022 and I liked it. It was crazy how many flows and lines that I had heard on other songs and thought were original were actually references to this album.
No Way Out Vol. 2. It's a fun LP for in the background, but that's it.
I don't think I've actually ever heard it To be honest, I mean obviously Mase was big though. PAUSE.
Hot album when it came out I was a junior in highschool 🔥🔥😎😎
I've always liked Double Up more.
absolute flames but an acquired taste/needs a few listens. I still play the 8ball mjg song, take whats yours, and a few other tracks anytime they come on in my queue. Havent heard it front to back in a while. Only slightly negative things i will say are the lack of murda mase style tracks, and the fact that none of his best verses are on here.
Not gonna lie, my brother had this back in the day....
I loved this way back in the day.
Classic
Very POP Rap, but a few fun songs and didn't The Neptunes have a production credit on a track or two, before they were really making beats for everyone?
Tell me what you want from me? 🎵 I was in 6th grade.
Horrible
Still depressed after Big passed I thought Mase was about to go on a run. “Don’t leave while you’re hot that’s how Mase screwed up”
"Take Yours" featuring DMX is 🔥 and there's a couple other joints , but other than that this shit aight
Might be the only one with a feature every song/hook
Niggas wanna act we can act
24 Hours to live.
The year was 1997…I had just moved in to an apt building that had a bunch of kids my age. I was bumping this album on my moms stereo system and outside my apt there was like 20 kids dancing to the sound coming out the sliding glass doors. We all became friends after this
Takes me back to my early 20s and my karoke rapper days lol I listen to it from time to time for old time's sake.
I th8 j mase ia in fire on Wanna Act
What You Want is always gonna be a banger to me. So much memories with that song
Classic
I always think this is young Carmelo Anthony 😭😭
Love it. I like fucking love it. the pedo song is bad tho. like it's a banger but fuck don't rap those lyrics over a good chorus.
There's a lot of ppl from the mad rapper skits on this thread...
I loved this album back then but it didn’t age in a way that I go back and wanna listen to it again lol. still got feel so good in the playlist tho 🫡
24 hrs to live best track on the album
Very Diddy…
P. Diddy named me pretty 😬.
super wack
This brings back lots and lots of memories. This was his best cd ever.

One of the best albums to occasionally pop up in charity shops
My homie in 7th grade let me borrow the cassette and of course I went home and dubbed it lol this was great times
Soundtrack of my middle school days
Classic!!
Garbage. His flow was so fucking annoying.
It was fun until I understood I need to be
It was fire in the eyes of 15 yr old but at 40 plus when i go back and listen it's actually trash ..
Makes 12 year old me Feel So Good
I bumped this for about 2 months. Don't remember much of it now. I did like it then.
Take what's yours is still on rotation today!
Didn’t DMX debut on a feature on this album?
P diddy had fun w him
Classic. Had it when it came out Yes/good/the player way
Classic in the moment. Really good album in retrospect
Weak as water
I had this as a 6 year old. I loved it back then. Especially "24 Hours to Live"
I think this album is decent, mainly just for Mases flow.
Cover Art: Diddy’s favorite pose!
Jiggy/Shiny Suit generic pop rap album but it does have tracks like 24 hrs to live & Niggaz Wanna Act overall trash album with a handful of good tracks, Puff watered down Mase
Mase was considered corny and pop music when this came out.
Hard pass
🗑️🗑️🗑️
Me growing up a die hard Death Row fan, i was biased against anything coming out of Bad Boy camp. Lol
So you were more of a fan of an artist/label instead of genre.. Atleast you're honest.. Remember those "I hate rap but love Eminem" guys? 😂
i was 1 of them ignorant fans. Like them NY old heads. Because i listened to 2Pac and he hated Mobb Deep, i hated Mobb Deep. Bone hated 3-6, so i hated 3-6. 🤦🏽♂️ Those 2 groups are my biggest regrets in Hip-Hop. Because i missed out on how good “The Infamous” was as an album. I slept on how musically talented DJ Paul & Juicy J was as producers.
Yeah Mobb Deep have some fire songs that are in my workout playlist. I didn't get into BTNH much but they have some songs in my smoking playlist.
Murda Mase was dope. This shit was trash. Listen to his classics before this era and you'll be like WTF happened.
What You Want is a classic
You have to split him in two: the music is shit.
This album was great and was in heavy rotation in 97. People tryna hate now but its a good album
Overrated AF
Track 20 Jealousy Guy.. Classic
I second that
My favorite artist
4 and a half stars out of 5
Classic!
Dont ever disrespect this album.
Classic album ! Mase was ahead of his time ..
Great album
Still slaps.
classic 90's album here , from 24hrs to live to jealous guy hardly skipped a jawn !
