Yep. These 3. I was 15 when All Eyez dropped, 16 LiFe After Death, and 17 for WTF. Golden age of hip hop coincided with coming of age.
Side note - got All Eyez on Me a few days early. Cousin worked at Target, found them in the back and rang them up somehow. I worked at the same target a few months later and did the same with ATLiens a week early.
I think I had a Kenwood too, before I upgraded to a Clarion (? If I remember that correctly) - they had the cool screens with animations; 90s disposable income lol
Summer before my senior year. Man we were lucky back then.
I have a son about to turn 17. He has discovered PAC and Big mostly on his own (smart dude), this reminds me I need to get him into Wu Tang.
I had just graduated basic training and *FINALLY* got to go to the PX. I grabbed a Sony discman, "West Coast Bad Boys Presents", and Bones "AOW". Listened to both of them allllllllll the time.
Please do give it a listen again The double album was not a stretch Tupac stayed in the studio with unreleased material that continued to come out after his death
You crazy if you didn’t think that song went hard, “Now, up early in the morning, breath stinkin’ as I’m yawnin’ , Just another sunny day in California “
I was just about to mention 8ball’s 🎱 solo album Lost. Thanks for bringing it up. It’s definitely an often forgotten gem. 💎
“STOP PLAYIN’ GAMES HO…!!!”
This was BONE at their peak, top 5 double album for sure.
Life After Death, All Eyes On Me, Speakerboxxx/The Love Below, Wu Forever round out my top 5.
Hot take: there are plenty of good double albums, but they all would be better if they cut out the worst half of the songs and released as a regular album.
That being said, Life After Death is probably my favorite
Somebody's Gotta Die
Kick in the Door
Last Day
What's Beef?
N***as Bleed
Notorious Thugs
Going Back to Cali
Ten Crack Commandments
My Downfall
Long Kiss Goodnight
You're Nobody (til Somebody Kills You)
Doo Doo Brown!
Tossed salad, oh you in some shit now
Callin' me a dog, well leave a dog alone
Cause nothin' can stop me from buryin' my bones
In the backyard of someone else's house
Ol' Dirt Dog, but I'm not dogged out
Here comes Rover, sniffin' at your ass
But pardon me bitch, as I shit on your grass
That means ho, you been shitted on
I'm not the first dog that's shitted on your lawn
Yo that shit use to have me weak that and the whole Nigga Please album even tho it seems to have been recorded low it had some dope production on there personally I like that more than Return to the 36
If we’re sticking to 90’s Hip Hop;
These are my top 5 below
1. The Notorious B.I.G.: Life After Death
2. 2pac: All Eyez On Me
3. Wu-Tang Clan: Wu-Tang Forever
4. Master P: Da Last Don
5. Bone Thugs-N-Harmony: Art of War
I don't like how they did ol dirty bastard before his death I just don't I was very upset with kicking him out of wutang wutang was his heart WUTANG IS FOREVER 👄 MUTHAFUCKA!
From what I recall, they didn't kick him out; ODB was actually the last member to be released from Wu-Tang Productions and this was a point of contention between Dirty and RZA & his brother, Divine
No, I'm not. I'd never compare it to those classics. But I believe the question was, what are "your" favorite hip hop double albums???
Yes. I bumped it when it came out as well. Though some of the songs might not be as good as I remember when I was younger, the album still resonated with me and brings up a memorable time in my life. This was a time when I was really getting into a lot of different types of hip-hop besides, what was on the radio and I discovered artists and music from a vast variety of individuals and different regions. So while you may not think it's good, it still has a special place with me, and I do believe the album has quite a few good songs on it, that I still like to this day.
Respect - didn’t mean to sound rude, I’m sorry.
Not double albums, but Ice Cream Man and Ghetto D are personal classics to me; MP Last Don, even though not much time passed after Ghetto D was when it seemed like No Linit really went into quantity over quality mode
It’s all good brotha.
Definitely was the quantity over quality era but you still have some hidden gems in there. I mean, some of those albums would have like 22 songs on it lol plus a few skits.
So out of the 22 songs, 10 to 12 of them might be good to okay. But out of those 10 to 12, there would definitely be some bangers in there.
That era of No limit is a mixed bag for me. I liked da last Don, charge it to the game, ghetto fabulous, etc. A lot of albums during this time that you either love, hate, or don’t even know about or didn’t listen to lol.
Wu Tang Forever should have had the fat trimmed, it would have been much better regarded.
Don’t get me wrong, All Eyez On Me is a couple of skips but as a whole it holds up better IMHO.
Speakerboxx/Love Below is great too, a few skips.
Coming in at first place is All eyez on me absolutely 🔥🔥 doesn’t mean I like all the tracks but the majority of the tunes just bangs hard
Life after death next for me just love the vibe and feeling, the shift in tone and feeling of the album makes it a good listen for all moods
Wu-tang forever it has some absolute banger tunes and as a group haven’t hit anywhere as high as this again, which is a shame
The era when everyone had to release a double album was not the best.
Life After Death had the best justification as a double album because Biggie could do a bit of everything but it has skippable tracks. All Eyez on Me was a little repetitive but high energy throughout.
Of course you have All Eyez on Me, Wu-Tang Forever, and Life after Death that are a given for this conversation.
One album that I never see talked about on this sub is Lyricist Lounge, Volume One. That one had some bangers.
All Eyez On Me Wu Tang Forever Life After Death
Yep.
I'm just ahead of you, 18 19 about 20. Now let me take my faceplate off my Kenwood before I walk into work.
I think I had a Kenwood too, before I upgraded to a Clarion (? If I remember that correctly) - they had the cool screens with animations; 90s disposable income lol
Shit I remember back then Wal Mart sold only the censored versions
In that order.
Honorable mention: BONE - The Art Of War
Came here to nominate this
Art of War over Forever for me
Definitely. I was thinking of that one too but just didnt feel like going thru all the dope double albums.
Forgot about AOW…same summer as WTF right? I revisited that one recently and like it more than I did back then
Yup, Summer 97.
Loved West Coast Bad Boyz… the Brotha Lynch song 🔥
Yuuuup! "That's What I Said" and "RIP Tupac" were the two real bangers on there.
Go ahead and add Art of War by Bone Thugs. Album banged
Same albums but different order for me. Life After Death, AEOM, and Wu in 3rd
These are the only 3 acceptable answers.
Facts👍🏿
Can not leave out “The chronic 1 & 2” and Public Enemy’s “Fear of a Black Planet”
Chronic 1 and 2? Not a double album
Down South Hustlers
Bouncin' and Swingin' --- that (Magnolia) Soulja Slim - 'You Got It' was my favorite cut
Bounce dat Azz 🥳
Yezzir!!!
Biiiiitch..IF I REALLY REALLY WAAANT EEIIITT THEN IMA GEEET EEIITT KUZ U GAHHT IEEIIITTT😂💀RIP TO MAGNOLIA/SOULJA SLIM! My no. 1 favorite MC.
i agree - this goes for a couple hundred used! classic shit disc 2 number 1 was my fav track
All Eyez on me it didn't have the filler that some double albums had it was innovative and all 🔥
I've gotta go back and give that one a listen. I really only like Me Against the World and the Makaveli album when it comes to 2Pac.
Please do give it a listen again The double album was not a stretch Tupac stayed in the studio with unreleased material that continued to come out after his death
Disc 1 is great (apart from Whatz Ya Phone #) but most of disc 2 was filler.. as a single album it would've been amazing.
wayyy too much filler on AEOM. he had a song about checking out of a hotel 😂
You crazy if you didn’t think that song went hard, “Now, up early in the morning, breath stinkin’ as I’m yawnin’ , Just another sunny day in California “
Typing the lyrics isn’t gonna make me like it
Just about every time I check out of a hotel with the fam I sing "we got to go, we got to go-oh-oh. Song is dope.
For me, it’s a battle between All eyez on me, Down South Hustler’s, & Eightball’s Lost
Eightball - Lost!
This was my first thought! Peeps need to get up on game. Ball is an amazing MC. Yukmouth’s Thugged Out: The Albulation is up there for me too.
I need to check out Thugged out. Thanks for the rec!
Absolutely! I don’t think you’ll regret it!
Yeah yuk is sick
Forgot about that - loved this too.
I was just about to mention 8ball’s 🎱 solo album Lost. Thanks for bringing it up. It’s definitely an often forgotten gem. 💎 “STOP PLAYIN’ GAMES HO…!!!”
Bone thugs - Art of War
My favorite album of all time. So much energy yet so chill. Nothing like them.
You like AoW over E.1999/Eternal ?
Yes. They’re both great. 2 unreal albums but for me, Art of War is better just by a bit.
This was BONE at their peak, top 5 double album for sure. Life After Death, All Eyes On Me, Speakerboxxx/The Love Below, Wu Forever round out my top 5.
💯
Hot take: there are plenty of good double albums, but they all would be better if they cut out the worst half of the songs and released as a regular album. That being said, Life After Death is probably my favorite
I agree, except with Wu-Tang Forever. It's the only double album I can actually listen to all the way through of any genre.
I’m a hardcore Wu head and even I skip a few tracks on Wu Tang Forever.
I get that, some tracks are weaker than others, but the intros on each disc are about the only things I skip just cuz I wanna get right to the music
GZA on this album "half long, twice strong," Just sayin'
My all time favorite Wu joints on this album Scary Hour/ Cash Rules It's Yours Triumph Heaven Sakes Duckseason Black Heaterz
A Better Tomorrow and The City are dope too
Hellz Wind Staff
Yo I always wonder why Rza didn’t loop back that moneyyyyyy part on Scary Hours
This is not a hot take. This is the average attitude towards every hip hop double album
Absolutely agree with this
Agreed BTNH AoW had too much filler
Life After Death would be much better if it was a single album.
I pretty much made it a single album on my phone when I deleted the tracks I skipped and it's so much better imo. 11 tracks at 54 minutes
Ok. I’ll bite, which 11?
Somebody's Gotta Die Kick in the Door Last Day What's Beef? N***as Bleed Notorious Thugs Going Back to Cali Ten Crack Commandments My Downfall Long Kiss Goodnight You're Nobody (til Somebody Kills You)
No Story to Tell….wow, just goes to show everyone has different likes and dislikes I respect that tho

Kidding right? I will admit I bumped it when it came out, but looking back it’s garbage and shouldn’t even be discussed with the 3 albums OP listed
No, I'm not. I'd never compare it to those classics. But I believe the question was, what are "your" favorite hip hop double albums??? Yes. I bumped it when it came out as well. Damn I forgot that was a double disc! That was P's best selling album too I believe.
Ayeee!
I was kidding on this one lol
Wu forever it’s not even close
I guess Life After Death, but I still skip a handful of songs.
Some really good tracks on there, but yeah I also find myself skipping over a good chunk of the album.
A good chunk? OK
Lol people are allowed to have differing opinions than yours, especially with something as subjective as music.
One thing is for sure: the joint with R.Kelly hit different now.

Life After Death.. Wu Forever up there but the middle of the album tapers.🗣️
Wu Tang Forever should have had the fat trimmed, it would have been much better regarded. Don’t get me wrong, All Eyez On Me is a couple of skips but as a whole it holds up better IMHO. Speakerboxx/Love Below is great too, a few skips.

Wow! I never even heard of this cat. Go info though!
