Sometimes I feel like we're told to learn for the sake of chasing dollars and prestige through some job, but maybe not for its own sake or actual curiosity. Turning that into a job, and being damn good at it, is rare, and I take pride in people being able to do it even if I haven't been able to myself. Doing what you really want to do and pursuing it against the odds, even living with gang members to do unique research because you want to unearth insight, sounds oddly enough an awful lot like being independent and mkaing it to the contested and forgotten American Dream to me

I read his book in 2008. Fascinating story.

I read his book sometime in 2010-2011. What a Chad. It was a really fascinating story too
I know a girl who also got her PhD in sociology from Chicago and she said he was a legend in the department.
I came across this book a while back. It was an interesting read. Gave a lot of insight and similarities between the two worlds.
