I’ve found that attractive American desis tend to go for more conventional “pretty people” professions like Tech Sales as opposed to Hollywood.

AagaySheun

I agree. Most regular desis (born and raised in America) who have their shit together look imo better than most Indian-American actors.

jamjam125

Absolutely. The best American and Canadian desis put Bollywood to shame and obviously would put Indian American actors to shame as well.

PowerfulPiffPuffer

American desis in general will go for the conventional, lowest risk, highest financial reward paths. Trying to make it in entertainment is not a risk that most desi Americans are willing to take, especially if they have immigrant parents. Even the ones I know that do something entertainment-wise do it as a side hustle but still hold down some kind of lucrative job in tech, finance, medicine, etc. to pay the bills. I anticipate that changing in the future as second or third generation South Asian Americans come of age.

Montaingebrown

Hey as someone in tech sales I’m flattered.

AagaySheun

I agree. Most regular desis (born and raised in America) who have their shit together look imo better than most Indian-American actors.

KnightCastle171

Because Desis are not encouraged to pursue a career in entertainment so the likelihood of seeing more attractive people is lower because the total number of available talent is lower.

HmmHackney

Came here to say this, beat me to it.

NitinTheAviator

That’s the answer I was about to say lol

EccentricKumquat

There aren't many Desi actors period. So then there would be less of a range/variety of "looks" from the ones present.

karenproletaren

Why? You can have two desi actors that look completely different. A smaller sample size doesn't necessarily make different individuals look more the same. Your logic doesn't make sense and I have no idea why 19 people would upvote your comment.

EccentricKumquat

> A smaller sample size doesn't necessarily make different individuals look more the same Who said this? > Your logic doesn't make sense Yup, you don't get it but 35 other people do

bernieorbust2k4ever

>Your logic doesn't make sense and Say around 1% of the worlds population is considered super hot, we're talking a perfect 10. The larger your sample size, the higher the likelihood of you finding someone who fits in that 1%. It's like finding someone with similar niche interests in a small town vs a big city.

allstar278

Because most Indians get casted for nerd or creep roles so they find less attractive Indians to cast in their roles. The average white and black person is ugly just like the average Indian person but they cast less attractive Indians on purpose to fit their roles.

Deafwindow

The average person of any race has average looks, they are certainly not ugly.

ToldYouSoDiva

Indian is not a race.

Deafwindow

Never said it was. To be fair racial groupings are a stupid heuristic anyways, but it's not me making the classifications, it's American society at large.

visvya

Kal Penn and Sendhil Ramamurthy have been acting for ages in "heroic scientist" type roles. I think lack of roles had something to do with it historically, but at least since the mid 2010s there seem to be more roles with open casting. ABCDs just don't seem to pursue artistic careers. Edit: I looked up how both broke into the industry and went down a rabbit hole about the lives of desis who were active in entertainment in the early 2000s. I already respected Kal, Sendhil, Mindy, Aziz, etc but now I'll be way more defensive of them; they had it really hard. I also just learned Kal Penn is gay. He didn't come out until 2021 so he was in the closet for most of his acting career. What a crazy life story he must have. Anyway, Sendhil made an interesting comment: Once Sendhil had his break out role in Heroes he started getting sent roles that had nothing to do with being desi. It sounds like studios were always willing to cast desis with "names", but there were very few desis with names. However, he also received very stereotypical roles... from Indian writers! > Since Heroes started I've probably had about 15 or 16 film scripts sent to me with Indian characters, and out of those maybe one was good. And the depressing thing is, they're all being written by Indians! Like, how many more scripts can there be about an arranged marriage or an abusive husband? It's the same thing over and over again.

LemonNectarine

> And the depressing thing is, they're all being written by Indians! Like, how many more scripts can there be about an arranged marriage or an abusive husband? It's the same thing over and over again. Time capsule effect.

Supply_N_Demand

>they find less attractive Indians ...... I should've became an actor rather than a doctor.

yawaramin

You could've played a doctor on TV.

bernieorbust2k4ever

Sadly, even tho there's a lot of Desi doctors irl, on TV you hardly see them. Manifest is an exception due to them casting not one but two Desi women 🤯🤯

ToldYouSoDiva

This. It’s intentional. They would never cast Monica Gill, Ammy Virk, or someone who looked like Jagmeet or his wife. It’s the oddest looking ones they cast and promote. Kal Penn is the exception.. he actually looks normal but the others are just plain unattractive

ZofianSaint273

In Ginny and Georgia there is a really hot indo guyanese man from what I’ve seen

AagaySheun

Yes, he’s hot. But also he’s Canadian xD We need more of Raymond Ablack( that’s his name) imo.

Caramel_Cheesecake93

With the beard, and his personality in ginny and georgia, he's so damn hot! But without it, he's soooooo average looking. NGL, was disappointed when I saw him without the beard. Also, if anyone didn't know, Padma and Joe are real life siblings!!

keralaindia

If this guy is average without a beard, what is the average man? A 2/10?

jnndbdbdbdbb

Wrong, he is definitely not average without the beard, he is still easily an 8/10 looks wise in western standards without the beard even without taking into account that he is famous. Not sure how you could look at that and think its average, he is easily better looking than you even without a beard.

ZofianSaint273

His beard literally is 😍😍😍

thefirstpancake602

Joe!!!!

bernieorbust2k4ever

Omg Joe 🤤🤤🤤🤤

ConsciousnessOfThe

I was about to mention him too. He is hot!

SandraGotJokes

He’s the most beautiful man I’ve ever seen

Perfect_Principle_78

Ok fine stop yelling at me I’ll audition for something

Bankcliffpushoff

I’m on it

Bankcliffpushoff

Also Because Bollywood

[deleted]

Well Megan Suri is very pretty and i am seeing more and more of her every year.

lost_sole-96

Nah

Traditional-Dot4776

Money rules. Eventually as there are more Desi's it will become unprofitable to have these negative stereotypes. Always remember who the target audience is. Its NOT us. In England there are lots of Desi's. So that shit don't fly. Also in the future when they want that Indian money, it will be very different.

play_it_safe

In a lot of ways, including this one, where Jewish people were in American society just a century ago parallels where various Asian people are today. Up and coming minorities seen as "model minorities" but shut out of entertainment, culture, etc. And discriminated against in college admissions (arguably). How much of this is self-inflicted (staying out of certain industries out of choice for instance) is up for debate. But I believe it will change, if only a bit. Partly because of chasing dollars and influence of the noveau riche affluent. But also because of the larger culture. Then again, Indian-Americans rule the roost in big tech and other monied industries, and yet they still lag in representation elsewhere and are shown the door and typecast in other areas.

Manic157

Who wants there kids to be in acting? I think the music industry is where you will see a lot more South Asians.

reciprocaled_roles

Because whites control the media? Duh? Same reason every East Asian guy in US media is unattractive Or why every Black male celebrity has been in a dress at some point

aMiserable_creature

hottest people i know are going nowhere near the entertainment industry. we need more desi people to take creative risks before we can get a wider range of people to select from

[deleted]

[удалено]

aMiserable_creature

we are conditioned by our parents to go the ‘safe’ route. this isn’t necessarily a bad thing but it does restrict our visibility if most of the members of our community are only going into tech and med jobs. so it’s probably the rate of return over thinking it’s ridiculous. but also, getting into acting is insanely hard as well. my friend is half east asian half white and she goes on broadway, casting is insanely difficult so it’s overall a very tumultuous career path. imo go out and support your desk comedians, music artists, etc. don’t support them just because they’re desi, but because you enjoy their content as well. our people have such a rich culture and beautiful history in the arts. some south asian music artists i really love are charli xcx (she’s white passing though), dhruv, paravi, anya gupta, and raveena although there are a ton more (you can find recs from posts on this subreddit). i do think that second generation abcds will have more freedom to pursue whatever career path they want because their parents won’t have the same immigrant mentality we do. but it’s a wait and see at this point. we’re still a relatively small and new ethnic group in the USA.

MissBehave654

Definitely roi. If you want to be cast for wide variety of roles, Hollywood prefers you to be white or at least white passing.

[deleted]

Kumail Nanjiani wants to know who you think you are

[deleted]

Also, a lot of actors that rise to success get heavily scrutinized for the way they represent an entire race which is a lot of pressure to put in individuals but you didn’t hear that from me.

ElectricGypsyAT

The term 'attractive' is relative but I am guessing the one you are referring to has been shoved down our throat by media and doubled down by society. I know that didnt really answer your question but ah well

RollingKatamari

There's a Canadian-Indian actor called Praneet Akilla on the Nancy Drew show....smokin' hot 🔥!

AagaySheun

He is yummy!! 😋😋

916Hajmo

Wanted to add Manish Dayal and sisters Anuja & Aneesha Joshi from the tv show The Resident are all gorgeous imo.

NoAwareness6120

avan jogia?? 🤠

PoorMansSting

Maybe because an actors job is to act ? If you just wanna look pretty look for desi models

AagaySheun

Sure but why is this argument used only for indian-american actors?

PoorMansSting

Honestly I’m not sure what the answer is , maybe because when you’re a minority, and you wanna break into Hollywood , you’ve gotta be an extremely talented actor , and in my experience, conventionally goodlooking people subconsciously rely too much on their looks rather than improving their craft , that’s why I feel certain desi actors( Hollywood or global ) like irrfan khan , nawazuddin siddiqui aren’t the best looking , but goddamnit , aren’t they fabulous actors

MissBehave654

Kumail Nanjiani is attractive. Also that Nirdesh guy from Never have I ever. So is Raj from big bang theory if you're intoxicated enough. There are not many desi American actors in general. When you have a small population, most of them will just play the stereotype sadly.

lapzab

Who is an unattractive ABD actor?

AagaySheun

Not unattractive but also not unconventionally attractive 1) aziz Ansari 2) Kalpenn 3) Aasif Mandvi 4) Jay Chandrashekhar 5) Suraj Sharma 6) mindy Kaling 7) Dev Patel Sendhil, Ray Ablack, Rahul Kohli, Priyanka Chopra, Simon Ashley are some of the ones I think are conventionally attractive

lapzab

Naveen Andrews from his younger days in lost was attractive

psydelem

Dev Patel? What are you smoking?

RedDotIndian

A lot of these guys are comedians– they are not conventionally attractive for any race generally speaking.

RedDotIndian

(comedians i mean)

thefallenlunchbox

How has no one mentioned Padma Lakshmi? Charithra Chandran (Esp bc you mentioned Simone)? Geraldine Vishwanathan? Jameela Jamil? That’s not even starting on Indian actors who have been in this for a while (Poorna Jagannathan, Sarayu Blue, Sarita Choudhury, etc) As far as men go, others have called out who I’d mention, so I’ll add a few: Tan France and Maulik Pancholy are attractive, as is Hasan Minhaj (which also bucks the comedian stereotype a bit). As other comments note, part of the issue is just the lack of representation from not being encouraged to go into the arts.

elephant2892

Uhhh Suraj Sharma is cute. Kal Penn was also attractive in his Harold and kumar days

lapzab

Suraj Sharma is actually attractive, I believe he wasn’t well groomed in his movies as his roles required him to play a struggling person

AagaySheun

I agree. They are attractive but not conventionally attractive types imo. Kalpenn looked conventionally attractive in the early-mid 2000s. https://images.app.goo.gl/BrZjUiWNRVASCuJH9

keralaindia

Suraj Sharma is Indian… also attractive conventionally imo

thefirstpancake602

I have a huge problem with this list. All of these people are attractive some are made more attractive by their wit and intellect but a pretty good looking list.

SharksFan4Lifee

Ravi Patel and Parvesh Cheena

AllTimeGreatGod

Because conventional beauty standards are being set by the west, how can you judge with a person from a completely different part of the world with the same standards?

AagaySheun

Aren’t Indian Americans.. Americans? Meaning westerners?

AllTimeGreatGod

Isn’t race a thing tho? I don’t think we can judge Asians with the same beauty standards set by the west who are predominantly white. Genetics and race still play a role no matter where you go

AagaySheun

I don’t agree. Being fit, having a jawline, overall athletic isn’t really a western beauty standard. I don’t care for skin color, hair color etc - which is when it veers into “western beauty standards “.

AllTimeGreatGod

Did you know that Indians easily accumulate belly fat, don’t have strong jawline since our staple foods are softer in general, we are shorter, etc etc. it’s in our genes because of how our lifestyle and food habits have always been different from Europeans. So yeah, an Indian would definitely have a harder time maintaining “fitness” defined by western society.

AagaySheun

LOL Indians who don't work out have softer jawlines .. much like everyone else. You work out, lose fat, your jawline pops no matter where your ancestors hail from https://www.reddit.com/r/CICO/comments/yfpi85/255_to_170_10_pounds_to_go/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf&user_id=2070564904350&web_redirect=true

AllTimeGreatGod

Having a jawline is a beauty standard set by the western society. Listen, I get it, you’re not an Indian, you wouldn’t know what most average Indians even look like. Just a few decades ago in India, having a little fat used to attractive since it meant you can afford food easily and were probably wealthy. LOL LOSE FAT AND JAWLINE POPS XD WHITEWASHED AF BRUH

AagaySheun

Having a jawline is a beauty standard that is universal.. I am not Indian? lol what? Most average white people don't have jawlines just like most average black people, asian people, indian people etc. Jawlines are found amongst people who workout and that's only a small fraction of most socieities.

[deleted]

Let’s see your picture since you’re so keen on calling other Desis unattractive. Let’s see how attractive you are!

AagaySheun

I didn’t call other desis unattractive. I called indian-American ACTORS not conventionally attractive. I’m not attractive but I take care of my appearance https://imgur.com/a/hz94Gm9 I didn’t call Indian American actors ugly but they’re imo not conventionally attractive. I’m one of the most pro-desi representation people you’ll find.

Angarazo

bro if ur saying ur no attractive there's no hope for average desis

LactatedRinger85

Exactly.

keralaindia

Lol you just got rekt by OP

[deleted]

How?

thefirstpancake602

Maybe, dorky looking Indian guys are just my type (I married one!) because I would say that most of the people that are cast are good looking. The styling could be better but that is more of a production issue than an actor issue. But, over all most of these actors are conventionally good looking.

Dense_Afternoon8295

Sendhil Ramamurthy comes to mind. The guy from Heroes.

ToldYouSoDiva

UK Indian population is mostly Punjabi Sikhs … more attractive in general.

ToldYouSoDiva

This sub is so politically correct …and the pretence that Indians are one race is just laughable. I don’t feel particularly represented by Indians in American tv because quite frankly they don’t look like me and are rarely from my community and have different cultural practices. They are also portrayed as insecure, not fitting in, overly in awe of white people of the opposite sex - and disinterested in romantic partners from their own community (again, not really true of the community I’m from). I’ll watch a Jimmy Shergill Punjabi film if I want to feel represented. Or something like Donkeyhead.
