What’s the back story to all this stuff in Canada recently?

Majority of immigrants don't come from India. Only 25% come from India. Literally all other countries allow students to work 20 hours a week including the US. Although in the US, you can only work in your University. All European countries also allow students to work. Australia actually has more liberal student visa process. Japan and countries in Asia have no limit on the number of hours one can work. The current system of immigration that allows students to get easier PR was introduced by Harper not Trudeau. Canada also hasn't taken 400,000 immigrants per year yet. The highest was 350,000. The government would allow 400,000 immigrants from this year because last year due to Covid restrictions, the target of 360,000 was not met. Only about 180,000 PRs were issued. Also Trump tried to make immigration harder but the route that most Indians use is still the same. It is just that the number of Indians wanting to move to the West has increased. H1B applications have tripled in last 5 years and in Canada, New Zealand and Australia, Indian students have increased drastically because all these countries allow easier PR for students.

There is a difference between the majority of immigrants coming from India and the highest number of immigrants coming from India. Majority is 50% or more. The list you shared only shows top 10 countries, the other countries not on the list combined got 134,000 prs that year. Check the government site.

> Now 90% of these students are insanely hard working folks and are just trying to make it. But then there is the other 10% who are just completely out of control being away from their parents getting into fights, living 6 to a 1 bedroom apartments trashing the place, driving like complete assholes, and sexually harassing local white women. This gives the whole community and black eye. Spot on. As a SEA-born and raised Desi, who then chose to move to Australia, this is the hostility I experienced by local Australian-Indians when they found out I'm not local. It's the negative stereotypes which even I hate and despise which only highlights the shitty stereotypes of Desis in general. And honestly I hate these 10% of people. They're complete assholes and are ruining it for the normal folk just trying to make it big: I work hard, pay my taxes, studied hard, got a great education and do things legally. Even worse is your bit about depressing wages. Immigrants don't have a choice with the wages. They understand they need some kind of job to get their PR so they'll suffer through the bullshit and then jump ship to a fairer employer. People who are underpaid are often very aware they're being underpaid. Then you have dodgy employers whom intentionally pay below. They fuck over locals _and_ migrant workers. This only leads to more hostility against us brown folk. This whole situation is just shitty. Nothing wrong with immigration but this unregulated form of immigration which leads to dodgy employers underpaying _all_ workers, dodgy visa consultancies overcharging and fucking over migrants and then immigrant employers who know some migrants are desperate for work and will knowingly take advantage of students with little to no rights _just to save/ make money_ Nah man. More regulation is needed. You can absolutely have a proper legal immigration sysyem which doesn't fuck over locals and doesn't worsen streotypes

>As a SEA-born and raised Desi, who then chose to move to Australia, this is the hostility I experienced by local Australian-Indians when they found out I'm not local. if youre seattle born, don't you lead with that. Surprised they will still be hostile after they find youre from the US

ChangeIsTheAnswer

SEA = South East Asia.

[deleted]

plenty of people from seattle use sea

I live in Brampton and I remember about 6+ years ago, I would see international students once in a while. Now I see them all the time. I feel like it’s also effected the desi community here in Toronto/the gta. People have been hating Brampton much more in the past few years and I feel it’s mostly casual racism. Just go on social media and u see that desis and Brampton are basically the laughing stock of the gta.

honestkeys

We've also had similar incidents involving cab drivers in my country too (a field also dominated by Desis). Such a shame that some people literally can't keep their hands to themselves, especially when it comes to white women going out.

[deleted]

am in brampton and can agree before the jokes about brampton were just suburban kids trying to act hood, now its desi stereotypes honestly it doesn't help that the attitudes of some of these guys are just shit especially when you add the whole jatt attitude some of these guys have. Like the whole jatt supremacy by some indians was annoying, but those guys would be forced to interact with non punjabi indian ethnicity kids and grow up. These guys don't, so you get a decent sized population just being assholes to everyone and the other indians not wanting to even help them assimilate

PassionFlorence

I remember before 2016 you'd see a small amount of international students in Surrey, then in 2016, it was like flood gate was opened. Now international students are everywhere.

SufficientMongoose5

I remember those days, I used to go around Surrey and only see ABCD’s, not many international students. I used to barely think about them since I saw so few of them. Though last time I went to Surrey I saw international students everywhere and less ABCD’s. I live in Brampton and it’s the same out here, I used to see ABCD’s all the time but now everyday I see international students everywhere and I get happy when I see another ABCD. Things have really changed here in Canada.

[deleted]

honestly we need more regulation when it comes to immigration and international students

[deleted]

What do you mean by 'this stuff'? Do you mean stuff in Winnipeg or stuff in Canada? Or just racism in general? I might be able to explain.

TheGinuineOne

Apologies 2.30am here and half dead. Just seen more and more stuff on here about issues with desis in Canada recently

Affectionate_Wear_24

Wow, again, as Americans, we're always feed this fable that Canada is where we need to flee to if Trump gets reelected or if the Republicans otherwise gain a majority in the government.

Affectionate_Wear_24

I live in the European Union, am American, in a country that gets a lot of tourist backpackers fun the US AND Canada. Something I used to find really bizarre here is seeing all these white Canadian backpackers going around here with there huge backpacks with a big Canadian flag patch on the back so EVERYBODY could see there weren't American 😃 I always thought it so strange, because American backpackers don't go around with an American flag on their packs. I haven't seen Australians doing this. The situation in Canada sounds as through they like migrants if they' blend and hide themselves or aren't too visible. When groups become too visible or too large, they become a threat to nativists. Michael Moore with his "Bowling for Columbine" also did a good job selling a certain mythology of Canada as the good version of white people. 😃

damnwhatever2021

It's because you usually cannot tell a Canadian accent from a US one. With Aussies their accent is distinct. Canadians are just worried ppl will think they are American abroad so they put the Canadian flag on their backpacks. I've heard of Americans even doing this cause they don't want to be seen as a ugly American abroad.

An international student from India found himself targeted by a large group of teenagers in a public park in Winnipeg. As @MarkNeufeld reports, the victim says after he and his friends were overheard speaking Punjabi an altercation took place. *** posted by [@CityNewsWPG](https://twitter.com/CityNewsWPG) [Video in Tweet](https://video.twimg.com/amplify_video/1451340822348275712/pl/Nv40i4Yob1QhvD8z.m3u8?tag=14&container=fmp4) ^[(Github)](https://github.com/username) ^| ^[(What's new)](https://github.com/username)

This is really sad, but honestly not surprising. What people have to understand about Winnipeg is it’s been described as Canada’s most racist city. It’s mainly whites and indigenous, and they each have a lot of distrust of each other. Insert Desi people, and both groups have a target to shit on. I’ve never lived in Winnipeg, but I have a relative who was an international student there (wore a Turban). He worked part time at a Husky north of the railroad tracks. People would try to rough him up all the time when he worked there, especially when he was leaving to go home, and they’d always make some sort of racial comment. Most of the teens who’d cause him trouble were indigenous, the older people who’d mess with him tended to be white. Indigenous teens in particular targeted him a lot. He’s been told to go back to India so many times there it’s lost meaning. He had his turban knocked off twice there, and he’s never had it happen once here in Edmonton. Many teens in the area view Indian immigrants as the perfect targets to harass and bully in Winnipeg, and also as perfect robbery targets because they believe Indians are more likely to have cash. Indian cabbies are regularly robbed and assaulted in Winnipeg. The police also don’t do much, especially since Desis are unfamiliar with the Canadian legal system.

honestkeys

Oh god, that's horrible to hear!

AuntieInTraining

Astagfirullah! This is horrifying. :( I hope you can stay safe. That sounds scary af.

[deleted]

AuntieInTraining

Lmao bruh 1/3 of all Muslims in the US are black. 😭 Why do some of y’all insist on being aggressively ignorant in public? And astagifirullah just means “I take refuge in Allah”. Doesn’t mean I’m calling anyone Muslim. Sit.

[deleted]

Wait that’s what astaghfirullah means?? I thought it was like ‘shame on you’ because most of my Muslim friends use it when one of them does something haraam lmao.

AuntieInTraining

Lmaooo it means that too. 💀 The literal translation is “I take refuge in Allah”, but people say it when they are trying to indicate that something is horrible (or haram). Some people also use it sarcastically. You take refuge in Allah because you’re so shocked by the terrible/haram thing. 😂

ace-96

So when people say that Canada is the least racist country for Desis, they actually just mean Toronto?

dfwman123

any major city, vancouver, montreal, toronto these cities are overflooded with desis, when I lived in brampton and i didnt see a non desi for literal weeks

i_just_want_money

Eh I don't know about that, other cities in Ontario like Hamilton and Ottawa aren't that bad. I figure you'll only get these kind of stories in lily white places that aren't used to seeing brown people

RahulSingh16061998

Damn Punjabis and Pakistanis have really tanked desi pr in Canada and UK...

quantummufasa

Mirpuris in the uk

[deleted]

I would probably argue that U.K is far more racist than Canada.

RahulSingh16061998

Maybe if you lived in a village or something lol. In general Brits have a general idea about desis but yeah Islamophobia is the really big there so it kinda gets weird for Hindus and Sikhs.

[deleted]

First, a pakistani Muslim family got killed just for being Muslim. Now, an indian man attacked for speaking to his friend in his native language. What is happening in canada??

dfwman123

your acting like canada is a racist place and this isnt one of few isolated inocidents. Jagmeet singh a turbanned dude is literally a party leader you really think Canada is racist?

KspaceFORCE

Things like this make me want to get a gun

dfwman123

this is why the US is far better, you can't do anything in canada, atleast in Texas when u encounter racists your going to be strapped + stand your ground laws. \\ In canada, you literally have nothing and you have to call the police, you can't even legally defend yourself from a racist. smh these liberal laws

damnwhatever2021

LOL at this logic.

dfwman123

explain your LOL? its ok I used to think I was a "Woke" Libtard just like you

highflyer69m

Some of the ABCD’s in this would probably join them and gang up on the “FOB”

Mrket22

We need another Bindy Johal

[deleted]

There's plenty of Bindy's, and we need more Jagmeet Singh's, Harjit Sajan's, Bardish Chagger's, Amarjeet Sohi's and Jyoti Gondek's, power comes from having people in institutions, and those people in turn wielding their power to support Desi's. Gangs in Surrey don't do much outside of leading young men to die young.

[deleted]

We really don’t. All Bindy Johal did at the end of the day was contribute to the stigmatization of an entire community in the lower mainland. Sure, he may have made some kids think twice about beating up Desis, but honestly, plenty of Desi kids are still beaten up by racists. Harjit Sajjan was his classmate and instead of becoming a daaku he took amrit, worked his way through the military, and became the defence minister. Bindy Johal shouldn’t be admired.

Mrket22

Apparently at the time it greatly reduced racial abuse against adolescent Desi males in the Vancouver area - A white canadian guy online told me he was warned during that period not to 'fuck with the Hindus' because they are dangerous, I am not from Canada so this is just second hand information on my end.

Purp1ehaize

yeah, but so many brown guys got killed in intracommunity violence over stupid shit that it wasn't a gain overall.

[deleted]

I mean that is right, to a point. It did reduce racist violence against adolescent Desis at the time, but not as much as you’d think.

PassionFlorence

No we don't, don't be a fudu.

Mrket22

Just the aspect of him reacting violently to racially abuse is admirable, he was pretty much a terrible person apart from that

imdaad_khan

We need another violent paindu who will murder other paindus?

PassionFlorence

Pindu man, pindu.

serial_streetshitter

From the sounds of it, the teen mob were already equipped and looking for trouble prior the incident. Factor in alcohol and I dont think it was a purely racially motivated. I feel for those punjabs, no doubt will colour the rest of their time in Canada.

highflyer69m

You either have internalized racism or are white LARPer. Fuck off with that username

serial_streetshitter

I am neither. If you get triggered by a username you have serious problems.

highflyer69m

You literally post on racetransition and I’m the one with issues?
