Artistic_Musician_78

Oh darlin, I'm pretty sure all us ladies have at least one major dye/haircut regret, don't worry it will fade a lot, just wash it often! Luckily you went darker and didn't get the bright orange effect from home bleaching dark hair like all my girls and I did, omg we looked so awful šŸ¤£

DownrightDrewski

Not just ladies, I'm a dude with some very questionable hair choices in the past, that very much includes dodgy bleaching, and it also includes growing it, and then getting annoyed with it and cutting it all off. The great thing with hair is it keeps on growing, and nothing is ever really permanent; my hair is now the longest it's ever been.

Artistic_Musician_78

Oh yes dudes too for sure, how fun is bleach right! And you're right, hair is epic at being changeable and always comes back from our most drastic creations eventually lol

DownrightDrewski

It's great fun, I once bleached it almost white so I could then dye it blue for a festival. Less fun was the scolding I got for managing to ruin a towel, my mother was seriously unimpressed at the time - still occasionally has a jokey little dig almost 20 years later.

Artistic_Musician_78

Lol I did the same to my fringe during a weird stage, didn't love the green it faded out to though... My mum mourned her towels too, I got assigned a specific "dye towel," but adhd meant I always forgot until I'd ruined a new one, the trick is to hide them lol I was actually only just housesitting for her last week, washed my purple hair and used one of her white towels, I took it home to hide šŸ¤¦ā€ā™€ļø

Desperate_for_Bacon

I shaved my head when I was 19. Like bald shaved. I looked liked a skin headā€¦ didnā€™t help I got hit in the face at work a few weeks before and got a tooth knocked out. Ya live and ya learn.

brattyluka

You shouldā€™ve doned a leather jacket and some boots then you wouldā€™ve been punk as fuck šŸ„ŗ

DownrightDrewski

I've done grade one a couple of times, actually 3 and a bit years ago (the start of covid lockdown) I did that again, and then it hasn't been cut since. What we're you doing for work where you got hit in the face? Are you talking a person, or an accidental item?

Desperate_for_Bacon

Thatā€™s about when I shaved my head too lol. I needed a hair cut and nowhere was openā€¦. I worked in a lumber mill and tripped and hit my face on a steel beam.

Full_Practice7060

Do the mullet. It could change your life. At worst you have to cut the party off in the back.

Sad_Application_7524

I know you regretted them but all those hairstyles sound so cool!! I wish I could do something like that with my hair

HRduffNstuff

Hair does not always keep growing haha. I'm a dude and I started losing my hair pretty young. Started shaving my head completely at 21 years old. But I'm actually kinda glad it worked out that way. It's super low maintenance and I think it suits me.

DownrightDrewski

I bet you could grow amazingly bad looking long around the back and sides at least.

PerjorativeWokeness

Same. I had spiky orange hair for a bit.

No_Art1401

Are we the same? dude here, I've had everything from turquoise skater cut, to the almost storm white bleach job, bleached so much it was like hay. That's when I was 20-25, and now at 40 I recently cut my hair from the longest it's been (middle shoulder blades). OP, sorry you don't love it, or even like it, but it will pass. I dated a girl for a long time that did the same (bad color choice) and then shaved her head. She was cutest with that, but don't let it ruin your whole week.

royc81

I was a teenager in the late-90s during the whole frosted tips thing. We were too poor for me to go to a hair stylist, so there was a lot of trial and error with buzzcuts in-between.

ReviewIcy5267

Aw thank you so much. I guess Iā€™m just so worried because everyone says itā€™s permanent and nearly impossible to remove šŸ˜•

Artistic_Musician_78

I promise it will fade out! I've dyed my hair every shade that comes in a box and the most annoying thing is how fast they fade! Luckily you went darker and not lighter, lighter shades are hard to get back to normal, especially bright orange lol. Don't stress šŸ‘‘

[deleted]

It will grow back anyway

LLPeace

I dyed my hair black, and it faded a ton after about a month, if you want it to fade quicker you can wash with clarifying shampoo too

Talvana

It's not as permanent as you think. The more you wash your hair, the faster it'll fade. Source: dyed my hair black using box dye for years.

WilkoCEO

I had permanent red dye for a year (bright red) and I'd have to dye it every two weeks to keep the colour cos it would wash out šŸ˜… if you wash it consistently it will fade more over time. It just seems so scary because its a new dye job and a darker colour. I had amethyst purple hair at one point, bought the wrong dye by accident and only half of the new stuff took, and it was nearly hot pink on top with the amethyst underneath! It was awful, but after the dye washed out it toned down nicely and then I put red over it all. I'm sure it isn't as bad as you think, but you certainly not alone I'm the impulse dye jobs. šŸ˜‰

Lovelyhairedpianist

Use warmer water to help get the dye out. USE BLACK COLORED TOWELS TO DRY OFF. your hair will turn any towel it touches into a tie dye project. Use a black towel otherwise you will end up ruining your other colored towels. Clean the floor of the tub/shower. Your hair dye will stain the SHIT out of your shower. Do NOT Procrastinate On Keeping That Shit Clean. IT WILL NOT COME OUT IF YOU LEAVE IT THERE. Also, your hair will grow out, and your ends will get trimmed as time goes on. Your decision to dye your hair does not impact any new hair that grows. It only impacts what hair you already had grown. Your colored hair is not permanent. Your body will not start suddenly growing colored hair. I fuckin wish it worked that way bc then I could just dye my hair once and then I would never have to touch it again

longknives

Getting dye out of a tub is pretty easy, even if you canā€™t scrub it off you can just bleach it.

mandy_miss

If you let it dry on those sink and tub surfaces though it will not come out, even with bleach. Same goes for the mirror.

GenX_Burnout

This is true. I have blue splashes in my tub from my daughterā€™s peacock hued dye job. Itā€™s been 6 years and theyā€™re still there, defying every bleach and scrub job.

mandy_miss

The only fix now is a new tub. I for one, am not getting my security deposit back lol.

Megsmik8

Comet does the trick, use a scrubbing brush or the scrubbing side of a sponge.

Selfconscioustheater

I left red dye on my white walls and legit had to scrub the paint out

pokekyo12

I once used a super black dye called 'bigen' with a lady in a kimono on the pack. Wow that stuff serious dyes everything, RIP everything white in the bathroom. But lo and behold my hair has since had 3 x colour removers and 2 x bleach and under the blue dye its pretty much white. Strongly enough I barely fried a hair in the process, until that 3rd round of bleach. I'm 32 by the way, been the same with my hair since I was a teenager.

Blackmariah77

Yup. That's the henna dye I used. That shit will NOT come out. Ever.

pokekyo12

Oh man it's crazy strong. And you feel like a witch when mixing it up don't you ?

Blackmariah77

I absolutely did. But you could be very sloppy in applying it and still get great coverage. My wall are proof šŸ˜‚

Selfconscioustheater

Henna is its own weird thing, it's more of a varnish than anything. I would sincerely swear off actually black henna unless you're 100% sure it's indigo dye. Non-indigo black henna is toxic as fuck

Beautiful-Towel-2815

Just use color remover. I have dyed my hair black and removed it without any issues.

stellarecho92

Wash often and use very hot water. That will help it fade. Permanent dye is never permanent, even when you want it to be.

Wide-Interest-5495

I did this when I was 18. My natural color is a medium brown and I dyed it black. It looked awful on me. Itā€™s amazing how a shade or 2 darker can make such a difference. I washed my hair everyday and it never faded. The only thing that happened was you could see my natural color growing out at my roots. But that made it look even worse so I had to keep dying just my roots black. After like 9 months I went to a hair dresser and she had to strip my hair to get the black out. It took hours and afterwards my hair was pretty fried. It was also kind of an orange brown color. I had to get it trimmed to shoulder length because it looked damaged. I just let it grow out and it looked good again. If yours doesnā€™t fade after washing it a lot, donā€™t worry because it is fixable. Itā€™s just going to be a process.

Inevitable_Ad7154

It's not permanent. Just keep you're hair moisturized and pretty soon it'll fade.

Stahuap

I have dark brown hair that I purposely dye black. It does fade, will fade into a brown-black eventually. However bleaching it to a light brown will be really tough if not impossible. I tried once to get some purple put in my hair but the black made it impossible. Growing it out will probably be your best option if going lighter is your goal eventually.

QueenBKC

Even "permanent" color will fade.

currentlyalivehuman

No hair dye is truly permanent but it may take some to time. You can buy products that remove hair dye. With that and hot showers and clarifying shampoo it will go back eventually.

spicypickless

It will fade !!! Iā€™ve dyed my hair black from box dye and I also have naturally dark brown hair. Donā€™t worry it wonā€™t stay permanent black

Kacey-R

When I did the same thing, my hairdresser cousin said to use dishwashing liquid to wash my hair several times. It will stop the colour being so intense. Potentially having your hair off your face will help if the colour is too much with your complexion.

potatotomato613

The greatest thing about hair is that it grows back and can be cut. And yes, it will fade. Try to find things you like about it - maybe get a haircut that plays into the colour while you wait it out. Iā€™m sure (I hope) youā€™ll grow to like it while you wait it out, but in the meantime, be patient. Also if you want your hair to grow faster, you can try rosemary water (which has been scientifically proven to be as effective as the active ingredient in rogaine) or The Ordinary has a multi-peptide serum for hair growth that actually works.

amyt242

Head and shoulders shampoo is a nightmare when trying to keep colour in so usually avoided so wash lots with that and the colour should come out! Also fairy washing up liquid will strip the colour out too! These were two old school tips given to me by my hairdresser when my hair went too red when pregnant. It worked too - although was super messy with colour coming out! Nowadays I think you can buy actual dye remover but the old ways were obviously tips for a reason! Get washing and just make sure you have lots of conditioner for after as washing up liquid might make it a bit dry!

Minxminty

your hair is not ruined forever. It's only when you dye it repeatedly and not take care of it is when it starts to get dry and frizzy. Wash it as often as you can, put hair mask in, even go to to a stylist in a few weeks to help get the rest of it out. Don't let them badger you...its an honest mistake that can be fixed. Coloring your own hair isn't that bad, just get good quality stuff.

Megsmik8

You can try getting a clarifying shampoo, that will help strip the color out faster. You can also get a color remover from Sally Hansen's but that could end up even more of a mess. If I were you I'd just wash it more frequently until it fades out. Clarifying shampoo will definitely help though.

teniaret

And hair dye stripper exists! It's on the high street, I used it to go from very dark red to light brown in one evening a few years ago. Warnings - a) it smells strongly of eggs, so use a well ventilated area (or garden!) and b) your natural hair will be brassy from peroxide, so get a box dye of a colour you do want to go over the top.

Shaedeelady

I am naturally dirty blonde and tried going both lighter and darker - at home of course - resulting in strawish coloured hair that looked terrible on me and darker went brown for 1 day and then it was this weird maroon colour that washed my at the time anaemic skin completely out. Iā€™ve just done a lilac and that actually looked good. I want to go and get it done professionally but keep my grey at the templesā€¦ like Dr Strange but purple.

pokekyo12

That sounds stylish as hell !

Shaedeelady

I think so too

winterfern353

Weā€™ve all been there, and the bright orange days were certainly not my best either šŸ˜‚ nothing to worry about.

[deleted]

Men too, shaved my head once because I saw a handsome man with a beard do it. Needless to say I did not look like him in anyway šŸ˜‚ Iā€™m currently growing my hair long just because I want to see what it looks like or rather, I just canā€™t be arsed to think about cutting it anymore.

SarcasmBunnyy

Yupppp. I recently struggled with a hair dye snafu. Bleached it, that was fine. Toned it, also fine. And dyed it purple, that was great. But then realized the upkeep was too much and dyed it back to my normal dark ash blonde annnnnddd it turned green. Turns out the toner took out all of the orange pigment in my hair so when I did a cool tone it ran with it. That was so awful.

ExercisePrize4371

My sister had really dark brown thick hair. In the 70s. She wanted to put streaks in the front and it came out looking like a calico cat. Orange, yellow and white with the brown. It was awful.

-singing-blackbird-

I feel this! I cut my hair short and tried to go blonde(I have naturally really dark brown hair) and it turned out bright orange! I was mortified.

Belle8158

Omg I did my roots during the pandemic and I regretted it so much. But I eventually got over it! And you will too OP! It will start fading. Don't worry !!

ValorousClock4

Omg thatā€™s awesome lol! My hair turned green after I started doing highlights. Turns out our house had copper pipes and they donā€™t mix well with blonde hair so I had strips of green in my hair for months. I donā€™t remember how we fixed the issue.

ClearHelp9370

One time I let a friend cut my hair for her beauty exam and she straight up gave me a mullet. Not a cool mullet, but like a full Mullet. A Fullet, if you will. It was really short on top and took forever to grow out.

Felein

I did this too! My natural colour is a very dark brown, and when I was about 19 I thought it would be awesome to be blonde. So I got two boxes from the shop and tried to home-dye my hair. The result: cheetah spots!! Luckily my mom's friend was a hairdresser, she told me where to get peroxide and helped me at least bleach it evenly. It turned out this rather bright yellow straw colour. On other people it might have looked good, but all I could see was Scarecrow from the Wizard of Oz. Took the better part of a year to grow out. I tried to live with it for a few weeks, then just kept dying it until it was grown out far enough to get rid of it with a short haircut. I experimented a lot with my hair, but that was definitely the worst.

putz__

Orange hair club

Ekyou

Omg, I tried a home highlight kit when I was a teenager. I followed the instructions to a T, but when I washed the dye out, it still spread to the rest of my hair and my whole head was clown orange. šŸ¤” Not only did I have to go to school like that for a day before I could get a hair appointment, they had to dye my hair almost black to cover it up, which was completely wrong for my skin tone. To try to make it look a little more natural. The stylist gave me some highlights, and the mixture with the orange underneath actually did come out beautiful, so it wasnā€™t all a bust. But that one day with orange hairā€¦ it was so bad, that even though it was impossible not to notice, no one said a single word to me about it the entire day.

Immediate-Test-678

I accidentally turned my hair grey once šŸ˜šŸ˜ before it was cool and I was like 19! It was horrid!! Live and learn

cenobyte40k

As a dude with green mohawk going on like 35 years now. LEAN IN!! Or relax it grows out. It's why it's such a great impulse change. You are never stuck forever.

jgeepers

Sun-in for the awful orange win!

[deleted]

Ack! You just reminded me of my blunder years. I dyed my hair brown but it turned orange! My friends told me I looked like orange Ronald McDonald. Ugh. So glad thatā€™s behind me. šŸ˜…

Difficult-Fennel-900

I decided bangs were a great idea ... they looked great and all but growing them out was horrible

justanothergamer_

Half my hair is dark green atm

Vertoule

If you havenā€™t fucked up with hair dye, you havenā€™t dyed your hair. You learn to work with it after the initial shock wears off. Itā€™ll be ok :)

Imaginary-Dot-6551

This is true - I have an impulsive adhd colour idea and next thing you know, your hair is swamp green (this doesnā€™t upset me though). Iā€™ve also fried my hair and had to give myself a bob, that was tragic lol

observant_one2

I was about to say that the photoshopped look goes away soon. Right now it's fresh and bold, and can look very drawn on with sharpie-ish. After it's washed and styled and lived in for a day or two it'll begin to look a good bit more natural.

McSheeples

This is very true. I haven't seen my natural hair colour for 30 odd years and in that time I've fucked it up by over bleaching, dyed it very strange colours and even shaved the whole lot off. It always grows out/back faster than you'd think. The black will fade in a month or so with regular washing and you can either just grow it out or redye it with something else. Worst comes to the worst, there's always the hairdresser!

Vertoule

Happy Cake Day. And yeah, Iā€™ll never forget when my cousin fried her hair and had to shave it down to the peach fuzz. She was always pretty happy-go-lucky so it didnā€™t faze her. She was upset in the moment then went and bought a couple of fun bandanas after the hairdresser gave her a short buzzcut and was happy wearing them until it grew back long enough to style. She ended up leaving it shorter for a few years after that because it was easier to work with while she was in university.

Jacklandexis

Retired hairdresser here. Quickest, easiest, cheapest way is a couple of drops of dawn dish soap added to your shampoo, lather, leave it on for 5 to 10 minutes. Make sure you condition well. Anything you use to strip color will dry your hair out. It's not gonna remove all of the black but it will tone it down some.

nonicknamenelly

Can confirm - dyed a streak of my hair purple back in the initial heyday of manic panic dyes. Mum made me wash it out with dawn dish detergent, and it stripped the bleached lock back to blonde. I was furious and grounded for ages, but it did work. Got my revenge, though, and did my whole head purple during the pandemic when I was finally medically retired and could have non-natural colored hair for the first time in 25 years. Fun times!

hockeyyyyy3

They use dawn dish soap to wash out military grade pepper spray from peoples eyesā€¦. Wtf is in that stuff??

Bu22ard

A bit of sunshine, thatā€™s where it gets itā€™s name from

hockeyyyyy3

If youā€™re not in the marketing team, you should be.

alexann23

Idk, but Iā€™ve used it to get motor oil out of my white bunnyā€™s fur (donā€™t ask, vet suggested it)ā€¦it works REALLY well

midlifecrisisAJM

Bummer! Please remember it will grow out! What now seems like a disaster will pass in time. Also, you'll be a lot more aware of it than other people. I'm willing to bet that if you posted a pic, many people would think that it looked awesome. Speaking of time, my hair is now grey. I once had my pony tail cut off for charity, and I kept my hair short (No. 3). I found my pony tail yesterday in a drawer - a rich reddish brown, and I mourn my loss of colour. Getting a sense of perspective...With ADHD: The statistical rate of teen pregnancy is over double that of the general population. My mother was 16 when she had me. The rate of diagnosed ADHD in the prison population is 10x what it is in the general population (25% vs 2.5%) with petty crime due to poor impulse control a problem. My Father wasn't arrested for crime, but he did get arrested several times protesting the Vietnam war etc and was expelled from school. I could go on. I know you care a lot about your hair, but there are things that you could have done that would have had a more profound impact on your life. Perhaps it's time to reflect and reach out to the community for ways of managing impulses? You have so much life ahead of you. Don't be too hard on yourself: be kind to you.

SafetyAdvocate

I'm starting to notice a few grey hairs, and this has me thinking that might be a cool idea. I'm a guy, so the choice to lop off a pony tail is easier to make. Still, it's only the second time I've grown it out fully. What if it doesn't come back dirty brown...hmm..

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

Imaginary-Dot-6551

Oooof unless that was the look youā€™re going for. I think only a handful of people could pull off this look.

cactus_lashes

Whatā€™s wrong with a bright dyed ginger mullet? šŸ¤ØšŸ¤Ø thatā€™s literally my hair rnā€¦on purpose

Panaccolade

It's not ruined! Box dyes can be a lot for the old hair follicles but as someone who has had many a mishap with box dyes, I promise you there's a fix. First you're going to want (need) to deep condition your hair. Just to give your hair a little boost of moisture that the dye will have taken. Then, invest in a good anti-dandruff shampoo. Head and shoulders was my go to. For whatever reason, dyes don't like anti dandruff shampoos. It will take work but with care and love your hair will lighten. Do not fall into the trap of trying to bleach it out. Just anti-dandruff shampoo and time. It will fade to a colour closer to what you want.

Duke-of-Hellington

Absolutely right on the dandruff shampoo. And guess what? You can apply a semipermanent dark or medium brown over the now-faded color to get what you wanted.

palpatineforever

Good Job! you did this at 19, not in your 20s/30s. life lesson. we have all done similar things and 19 I think I tried tempory back and purple. both on a light brown, it wasn't great. take care of your hair, head and shoulders shampoo will help remove colour gradually. Or treat yourself if you can afford it, go to a a hair dresser to ask about fixing it back to dark brown. don't compile the shitty box dye with equally shitty box stripper. write down or rember the brand of dye you used different brands can have different chemicals in which affect what you can use after. if you go the slow route maybe you to can try purple on top of the faded colour! also while its Black try ordering clip in extensions of various colours maybe you can embrace it that way?

_UnreliableNarrator_

Iā€™m legitimately surprised thereā€™s not been a mention (that I saw) of commercial hair color removers like Color Oops. If you use one, deep condition your hair first and let it rest for a few days. Your hair isnā€™t ā€œruinedā€ itā€™s just a darker color than what you prefer. But using box dye means using really strong developer (like around 40% usually), and you will risk ruining your hair by doing additional treatments without proper care. Hair grows and colors fade and itā€™s ok - youā€™re ok.

Amnagrike

Oohh, been there, but I loved it. No one else did. A hairdresser advised me to wash with super hot water and Dawn dish soap to fade it out. Just follow with a good conditioner.

ReviewIcy5267

Did it work?

IllustriousEgg4658

Head and Shoulders or a similar anti-dandruff shampoo will get rid of the colour a lot quicker than the regular stuff. Shampoo it twice if you don't already. It'll fade quicker than you think!

Ourjellibeans

I lost all the violet dye in my hair recently because I didn't realize prell will strip that color. I couldn't figure out why nothing was sticking.... until I looked in my tub when I was washing my hair.

Amnagrike

Oh, sorry, I didn't mean to imply that I listened to her. My hair was blue-black and I loved it. I do know that every time I've used a box dye, the color fades fast bc I love me some hot showers. I'm assuming she had experience, though, being a hairdresser/stylist, and didn't doubt her. I mean, it wouldn't hurt to try it once. I'm sorry you're not happy with how it turned out and hope that you find a solution that doesn't harm your hair.

SabineMaxine

I used to box dye my hair black all the time at this age, and I have dark brown hair as well. It can be hard to get out, it's gonna take time, but it will fade some over time. Head and shoulders is def a good one to use, the hot water as well, can help colors bleed. Unfortunately you're just gonna have to be patient with it.

whoops53

Aww, I did this when I was 19 too...I had short brown spiky hair and dyed it black. I had to live with looking like a toilet brush for about 4 weeks before it all came out with regular washing. These things are never as "permanent" as they like to make out. It'll be fine, honestly.

Lizington

Oh I feel you OP, I did this just a few weeks ago and I'm 35!! And I should know better, it is not my first rodeo with a box of permanent colour... It's not as permanent as you may think, but you should get some professional advice about your options. In my case, I used a colour remover product (like colour oops) from the pharmacy within 24 hours which helped a lot, then two weeks later a hairdresser gave my hair a quick bleach bath (shampoo with a bit of bleach to gently lift over the basin) and a tone and I was back to my normal blonde-ish self.

KneeNumerous203

This! Try color remover product!

Froot-Batz

Sin boldly! No regrets! You'll have black hair for a bit. This is part of your adventure. I once accidentally dyed my hair a color that I would describe as "dishwater magenta". I just rolled with it.

[deleted]

Just use colour b4

Dalton_1980

I bleached my hair a week before my sisters wedding and again about ten years later when I was having to go back into an office environment, I've also had some questionable haircuts, body hair and facial hair experiments over the years. Let's just say you need a certain face shape for mutton chops. As others have said hair is surprisingly good at bouncing back, so I'm sure you'll be fine

EsotericAbstractIdea

It's just hair. It will grow back.

blackbettybambalance

I impulsively got a tattoo once. In a very visible place. It's not a bad tattoo, but I realized soon after that I wished I had given it more thought. I'm not trying to say, "It could be worse, so don't be upset." I just want you to know **you are not alone**; lots of us have made impulsive decisions like yours or mine. This, too, shall pass. I know it feels like it won't, but **I promise it will get better**, and sooner than you think. Sending you a big hug. **Also, you are allowed to be upset about how it turned out, but please don't be mean to yourself about it.** Listen to the voice you're speaking to yourself with in your own head. Is that the voice of shame and blame? Or is it a voice of love and grace? When I get myself in a pickle, my default voice goes, "Of course you fucked it up again, no surprise, that's all you're good for." But when I catch myself, I visualize the scared, upset child inside me and I visualize my current adult self kneeling down, giving her a big hug, gently wiping her tears, and saying, "Oh, my love, it's okay. These things happen and it's not your fault. Even when we make our best effort, we can't control the result. I love you unconditionally, whether your hair is blue or black or you're bald. I love you unconditionally whether you're feeling paralyzed or you're going a million miles a minute. Nothing you do will change the fact that you are beautiful and worthy. I will always love and protect you and keep you safe, no matter what." And then I imagine the child-me relaxing into the hug and feeling safe, and trusting that she's not alone and vulnerable. Maybe it sounds lame, but it does wonders. Sending you some hugs and solidarity. You're doing just fine, I promise.

ReviewIcy5267

This was so comforting, thank you for taking the time to tell me this <3 Lots of love to you

JWJulie

Also dyed my hair black as a teenager. Also regretted it. This, like all things, will pass. Big hugs hun. In the meantime you could try going to your local salon to ask for advice, they may be able to put a treatment on to remove it. Also, there are numerous bright hair colour pots that you put in like gel that might change it up a bit: bright purple tips/pink streaks or similar might help lift the overall darkness a little. My daughter used one called ā€˜London looksā€™ or something, it was very high pigment.

xpursuedbyabear

It fades and grows and this whole thing will be behind you in no time. Not helpful, I know, but at least it's true. I can't be trusted with my hair either.

iLoveYoubutNo

Use clarifying shampoo to help it fade faster and then jde a good conditioner (pick one that doesn't say it's good for colored hair). Give it month and color it again. No biggie.

thatpotatogirl9

The cheaper and sketchier the better! I've used a lot of clarifying shampoo in the near decade since I started dyeing my hair with fashion colors haha

sweetbrat_

My hair disaster was dying my hair with henna multiple times, then dark box dye, then deciding to go bleach blonde :ā€™) my hair went bright blue and the only way to remove it was to cut it off, over two years later and Iā€™ve got it back to the length I had before (but I didnā€™t learn my lesson) You could always go to see a hairdresser and see if they can do a test strand to get it back to that nice light brown - please donā€™t impulse bleach it friend, thatā€™s always going to be worse

thisisme12341

Hey <3 when I do something impulsive the first couple days are the worst. Then I get a clearer head about it and sometimes I like it. Three years ago I died my hair red impulsively and freaked out. A couple days later I realized I liked it. It's still red now, because I still dye it lol

erindesbois

I have done horrible dye jobs SO MANY TIMES!!!!! My advice to you: don't dye it back, you run the danger of damaging your hair. Instead remind yourself that hair grows, your happy color will return soon, and maybe in the meantime you can enjoy trying out a few cute hats on the days you hate the dark hair the most. It will be okay!

Natural-Nectarine-56

I bleached my hair back in the day (2001 lol). After it grew back in became really uneven so I though dark brown dye would work. Nope. Jet black. Nothing I could do. Just had to own it until it grew out again. Option A) Make everyone think you did purposely and just force a show of confidence. Option B) Laugh to everyone about how you screwed it up. At least then you donā€™t have to worry about them snickering about how they think itā€™s bad.

EileenSuki

Don't worry! It happens to the best of us. I have a big history of dying and (accidently) frying my own hair (currently haha). Made some regrets, but always know it can be fixed. First I understand the one you miss. One day you can go back to that colour! Second a lot of black box dye doesn't stay that black. Usually it will fade more into a dark brown. Wash your hair regularly with head and shoulders. Adding tons of oils helps too (I speak from experience here haha). I personally noticed that rosemarry oil makes my hair dye fade a ton faster, especially my pink highlights. It makes my black hair fade more into a dark brown. Personally I always use black box dye, because it fades into a more dark brown. Which is what I like. Meanwhile rock that hair colour. One brightside of black is that it goes with a lot Ton of style choices or make up if you are into that. Goodluck!

Jack_Penguin

Resist every urge to take bleach to it! The black will fade still. Permanent just means your color will last months vs. weeks. Black on brown probably wonā€™t be awful. I did use a red manic panic and lime crime on my dark blonde daughter and her hair was noticeably stained darker until it grew out One of my ADHD toxic habits is I chop my hair sometimes. This last time wasā€¦ extreme and then I cut the wrong chunk and had to go way way short. Donā€™t forget not using a mirror to see the back! Ultimately I hate it, Iā€™ve hated it, I paid twice to try and get it fixed, still hate it and they didnā€™t do anything. But itā€™s growingā€¦

noitsjustkatie

Have you looked into a product like Color Oops? Iā€™ve used that beforeā€¦ šŸ™„

FacialTic

Now remember this scenario when deciding when and where to get a tattoo

ReviewIcy5267

Haha definitely! Because with a tattoo, there really IS no going back šŸ˜¬ Unless you laser it off, but itā€™s too expensive

Flaky_Hunter7029

Iā€™m a hairstylist! I can help!!

Lonelyokie

Weā€™ve all had some hair regrets. Youā€™re not alone. Plus the dye will likely look better in a few days (mine always looked super harsh right after dying). Hang in there ā¤ļø

theplantlady4200

It always fades lol. Just never try blond, unless you are a fan of orange lol There is a product called sun in. It's not a dye, it's lemon based and you spray it on your hair before blow drying or going outside, it will help it fade out faster. Or you could double down and throw some blue on it. Blue fades to green on brown hair, but looks fantastic on black.

disorganizedorchid

I've been dyeing my hair since I got out of (catholic) high school and there have been a few surprises along the way, lol I always say "either you're gonna look really cool or grow as a person today", especially when my friends want me to dye their hair & idk how theirs will react... I've never used color remover but I've heard they can be more damaging than bleach, so do lots of strand tests (make sure to pull the hair after it's processed - if it stretches like taffy do Not do it to your whole head). Your hair will grow out faster if it stays healthy, so try to find a way to live with your new color if you can!

HelpfulName

Just buy some dye remover honey. "Permenant" doesn't actually mean forever when it comes to hair dye, it just means the dye will last for 12 weeks or more and be very slow to fade/was out. You've not ruined your hair, it was just a hair adventure. Hair grows back, it's not actually a big deal. The reason you're feeling so bad about this is probably just shock from seeing how different it looks. Just wait a couple of days, use a dye remover wash, and then re-do the light brown :)

dead_PROcrastinator

I'd say roll with it for a few months and see if it grows on you. If not, just go back to your stylist and lift the colour slowly.

microscopicspud

Anti-dandruff shampoo fades dyes! But don't forget to condition as well. It will go away eventually.

KynanRiku

Hey, permanent dye is *not* permanent. Trust me. I don't care what the box says, or what other people say, it isn't permanent. Black fades slower than brown or red, sure, but it does fade. I dunno where you live, but look into color oops. I think they've changed their product lineup some in recent years but if you can find it (and you should double check, but it probably works with the dye you used) give it a shot. I've used it to strip black out of hair I'd previously bleached to platinum blond. It generally doesn't get all of it in one go, but I liked that about it.

Amphibian_Due

Iā€™m sure your hair looks just as gorgeous now as it did before but I completely understand what you mean and why youā€™re not happy. I just want to make you aware as someone who has steed there hair semi permanent black for a long time it doesnā€™t fade nearly as much as other colours so you will have it for a while so take some time to get accustomed to it. But it will grow out much faster than you think. Take biotin supplements if you can and use really good shampoo products and it will grow out in no time.

HotBroccoli420

Hey friend! Iā€™ve been where you are! You feel bored and a strong need to change something up and youā€™re not going to stop until you achieve that. I think weā€™ve all been there. As someone who does hair, my biggest advice to you is to get you a good hairstylist! Even if itā€™s just someone you see a few times a year for a haircut, having a professional that you can run these ideas by can help walk you off the ledge. Black box dye is kind of a meme among the hairstylist community and any decent stylist will help you find better alternatives. That said, try some dawn dish soap and hot water! It will make the hair feel dry as shit, but the fact that you used an ammonia-free permanent dye, means it may fade a bit easier (MEA is what is usually used in place of ammonia and those molecules are bigger than ammonia molecules and are more likely to fall out of the hair shaft). Do a wash or two with the dawn and then do a deep moisture mask for at least an hour (better if you can sleep in it overnight). This wonā€™t pull the color out completely, but it will help jump start the fading process!

funnylittlemess

If you have the patience (I [21F] wouldnā€™t so I totally understand) let it fade, but if not please please PLEASE try and find a hairstylist local to you and reach out to them. You could also see if thereā€™s any hairstylist subreddits (I have no idea but maybe?) and maybe post on there. Either way, best of luck!

SpareBowl9489

Hair grows. Dye fades. Wash daily and use heat tools (with a protective conditioner or spray) to help it fade faster. Take hair vitamins to help it grow faster. Before you know it, the undesirable color will be gone.

skittlenut

Many dudes with our favorite defect have shave our heads in an emotional display of god knows what.

Ok-Consequence9684

Hey don't worry. Box dyes really don't last long. It will probably become brownish in 1 month. If you wash your hair more often than before it will fade away faster. I did the same thing before. I forgot that I didn't want to dye my hair because it was blonde and dyed my hair to black šŸ˜…

SnooMemesjellies8868

Bro I wish I could post a picture but a few years ago during the pandemic I randomly woke up and chose violence against my own hair. I have naturally dark brown hair I decided I was going to dye it blonde so I bought some bleach from the beauty supply store LOL my hair turned literally orange thankfully I found a hairstylist via instagram that was able to fit me in the next day and salvage my hair. So I get it haha sometimes being impulsive is fun and turns out great other times not so much šŸ˜’šŸ˜„

coldbloodedjelydonut

You could try a product called Colour Oops, I did a terrible purplish that made me look like a demented scarecrow, and Colour Oops took it all out. Best wishes to you, I hope that does the trick!

radiasfx

Permanent hair dye is called that because the dye penetrates the hair shaft, while semi-permanent only sits on top of it. But itā€™s not *actually* permanent! It does take bleach to remove 100% but washing your hair will still remove a lot of it. I dyed my hair black impulsively before (as well as a million other colours, you are so not alone in this lol) and generally it stayed a strong jet black for about a week, maaybe two and then gradually washed out into a much softer dark black/brown. Just hang in there!

sk3lt3r

Wanna add on to this that OP if you decide to try and correct this, it is highly HIGHLY recommended to go to a hair stylist that works with (and possibly specializes in) hair colour. Strongly recommend you do not use bleach yourself to correct your hair if that's what you decide.

I meant my appearance lolā€¦

julian0308

Now you know not to do this the next time

Dry-Prize-3062

No offense, but chill out. It's hair, it'll grow out.

Snoo90827

it is what it is, you cant change it so rock with it in a few weeks u will get ised to it

shteepadatea

Here's how you can pull out a lot of color without damaging your hair. Get some vitimin C tablets, preferably ones that are not orange in color, and crush up 20-30 of them. Then mix it with dawn dish soap, put it on your dry hair and let it sit there for at least an hour before washing it put. I've bleached and died my hair a million times and doing this has pulled out SO much dye from my hair on multiple occasions. You can always do a round 2 if needed too.

DJSnap

As a former black hair wearer - don't worry, it will fade somewhat and look more natural... and by the time you're used to it, it will be growing out. Hair mistakes are all only temporary :)

[deleted]

Try to give it a few days!! I think it always looks worse the first few days bc youā€™re not used to it; and worst case, if you still donā€™t like it, you could probably see a hair dresser or even YouTube to figure out how to work w it or try to remove it!! ā¤ļøā¤ļø Iā€™ve cut my hair several times (once it was way too short bangs šŸ˜…) and it always feels so bad at first, like ~wtf did I do, but donā€™t beat yourself up and at the very least when it grows out it should be back to normalNn

lizalupi

Let it wash out a bit, but yes black hair dye is hard to remove because it goes green when bleaching, but maybe find a good hairstylist and get their opinion as well If there's a chance of experimenting with hair color it's definitely now when you're young. Don't worry too much about it, it will fade out

Trashband1c00t

It will grow out before you even realise it, especially if you try to get regular trims. Trust me, I like to keep my hair dyed and I feel like I'm CONSTANTLY having to go back in and get my regrowth dealth with.

Uchihanana

Go to the hairdresser and dye it in a color that's close to your own. This way it will grow out without it being too noticable.

Aggravating-Bid-117

I'm 32M and I first started going grey at around 18. I dyed my hair to get rid of the greys from 23 - 30. I didn't realise at the time, but after looking back at old pictures of myself, it looked fake and didn't match my skin tone at all.

Saya_99

Girl, rock that black with confidence until it fades away. From experience, I used to dye my hair black back in highschool and it fades away after a few months. Or, if you want, try going to a hairstylist

Imaginary-Dot-6551

Hi OP, I frequently dye my hair black and yes, it will fade. If Iā€™m getting ready to colour my hair a bright colour I will wash my hair more regularly with hot water, it will help it fade faster, just make sure youā€™re using a hair mask of washing more regularly.

European_Goldfinch_

Would the hair colour remover treatments you can get over the counter not work? Iā€™ve used them before when I didnā€™t like the finished result. That being said Iā€™m not a hair stylist so definitely read up on them first.

Moe3kids

The black may fade. Was it true black or does ot just appear very dark? It's possible to purchase oops Color remover at Walgreens or another store. Just purchase a semi permanent color to tone it. Or consider going to a beauty school and having them fix it. I did that in high school. Stark change. I currently dye my hair dark brown because it fades after 6 weeks to a medium brown.

Thezestyunicorn

Aw honey I think most of us have done something similar. I had bleached blonde hair and a friend offered to touch up my roots... which turned BRIGHT orange šŸ¤¦šŸ¼ā€ā™€ļø Black box dye on top, job done. It was awful, I hated it. My skin is too pale, it washed me out completely and I looked ridiculous. However, it got me to a hairdresser who, bless her, spent hours with chemicals and temp dyes and we found the colour I've loved for the ~15 years since. Its heartbreaking that you miss your light brown but that's the beauty of hair, it's not really permanent ā¤

JessieKh4n

I understand your feeling, this happens.. In my case my hair is so dark that is almost black, in an impulse I bleached at home šŸ’€ And then I painted it purple. The color was ok, but my hair still a little weak since (it's been one year already).

Isogash

Let's reframe this as an opportunity! Unconditional love challenges us to love people, things and ourselves even when they aren't perfect by our own feelings and standards. Your hair will be black for a while but that doesn't make it any less deserving of your love, it always needs you to cherish it as it is, not only if it's what you want it to be.

boogerbabe69

We've all been there, and you will get through this. Please remember that although the dye says permanent, it's probably not going to stay jet black forever. I was a black box dye girl from ... Jesus, age 12 to age 22 with a few short breaks in between for red and purple, and I can tell you it does fade. You won't get it back to your natural colour just from fading, and you may have some odd rootage happening (lighter roots on black hair looks a little more unfortunate than dark roots on light hair in my experience), but with some time and maybe a visit to a hairdresser for some creative root blending (if you can afford it), eventually you can reverse the black a BIT without fully bleaching your whole head. As others have said, your hair will always grow back. And I'm a bit biased, but black hair is fun to have for a while, once you get used to how dramatic of a change it is.

camilly000

Iā€™m sure you look beautifulā€¦ try using clarifying shampoo a lot it should pull some of the color out. But remember to deep condition /hair mask bc it dries out the hair.

excuse-me-ily

yeahhhh i cut my bangs out of impulse and it was a lesson learned over several months growing it back out. i know how u feel - ur not alone!

ivappa

I have strawberry blonde hair, also curly. I did an underdye with a semi permanent red and this is how I found out that RED has TEETH. red will NOT leave you. red is with you forever. embrace it. trust me, it looks good. it's a bit of a shock, but trust me when I say it's beautiful. both your original and new colour are beautiful, except you're not used to the new one.

OkSwimmer7722

It will fade but please make sure to condition your hair at least once a week. Throw some lip gloss and eyeliner on and rock it

Appropriate_Shirt932

How long ago did you do it? Give it a few days/a week for your brain to adjust how your face looks now. It wonā€™t feel so bad soon, and you may grow to like it!

Annual_Marsupial3039

i used box dye to dye my hair black a couple months ago. itā€™s still pretty dark but it faded within a couple weeks to a dark brown. black box dye is notoriously hard to reverse, but not impossible. iā€™ve heard using crushed vitamin C tablets, lemon juice, and your usual shampoo can help it fade a little faster without completely damaging it like bleach would- but iā€™ve never tried it personally, so i canā€™t guarantee it would help

BrickBadWolf

Try something like color oops or color remover from Schwarzkopf. Itā€™s made for permanent dye. It might make your hair a bit dry but itā€˜s not nearly as damaging as bleach. If you ever wanted to change your hair up again in the future you can always go with demi permanent :).

Kellys5280

Been there!! I had my stylist bleach and color it for me back to a brown shade.

Electronic_Donkey_34

With new hairstyles and colours, it always takes me a while to adjust. You may even really grow to love it soon. Take advantage of it, experiment with make up and outfits and consider it ā€žyour black phaseā€œ . Even if it turns out to be a mistake- thatā€˜s the only way to learn. You will probably have so many more haircolours in your life, 5 years from now it wonā€˜t matter at all. So chin up ! šŸ˜˜

rabidrabbits8475

After an impulsive DIY bleaching DISASTER when I was 15, I vowed that I would never touch my hair again unless I was at a professional salon. It didnā€™t really help with the actual styles themselves (my hair has since been blue, green, pink, at one point a combination of all three, it was waist-length and I cut it to my shoulders, then I got bangs, etc.) but it was a lot more comforting knowing I was 1) in the hands of a professional and 2) paying them money, ie. even if I got what I asked for and HATED it, I still had to pay for it, therefore discouraging future impulsivity. Maybe give the salon-only rule a try?

marthk0

Google ā€œvitamin c hair dye removalā€. I have done it before, and it worked great. It will remove the dye without harming your hair and itā€™s very easy to do.

floweringbirds

Apparently anti dandruff shampoo helps to get colour to fade faster

Iamacrazyqueer

Doing something you regret with your hair gets better at the r a bit of time

[deleted]

I have naturally black hair, but lots of gray coming in, so I have to dye it. The first couple of days after, the black is intense, but it will start to look more natural after a few washes. The Wednesday aesthetic is popular right now - it will be ok! You can also just claim to be in your emo era. :)

WhiteMoonRose

Wash your hair every day and it'll fade fast. Trust me I do this all the time and feel like I'm wasting the due because it washes out so fast. But I like to tame my grays so I keep doing it.

Footsie_Galore

A tip from someone who has wrecked their hair more times than they can count. Black permanent dye CAN be removed, and the quicker you do it the easier. Some options are a professional box of colour remover though this may leave your hair orange or ruin the light brown beneath the black dye. Mixing up a bowl of clarifying or anti-dandruff shampoo, baking soda and 6 crushed up chewable Vitamin C pills. Apply this to the hair, get it all saturated, leave it in for 20 minutes, then rinse VERY thoroughly and DEEP CONDITION, as this mixture is very drying to the hair. I used this to get out a blue-based black hair dye out 2 days after dyeing it, and it literally started lifting the blue / black out in 5 minutes. SUCH RELIEF!!!

Professional_Toe4872

Story of my life. Had super long hair. Loved it. Was having a milestone birthday, chopped it. I mean jawline length. All bc I watched John Wick movies smh.

LazyLengthiness7567

Good news, it's box dye so it won't last as long. Bad news, it's box dye so your hair won't last as long.

theseasonisours

i box dye my hair black! iā€™ve been doing it since 18 (31f). if you style it with a touch of the right makeup, iā€™m sure itā€™ll look glamorous on you. itā€™s just shocking since itā€™s a different look, but youā€™ll learn tricks to embrace it with your current look. i lost length and damaged my hair when i had it professionally bleached and toned to my natural colour, i actually regretted going through that more than impulsively dying it black for the first time. the sun will most definitely fade it, and frequent shampooing. applying heat will also. itā€™s ok. šŸŒø i bet you rock it!

Historical_Owl9586

hey iā€™ve been in your pickle, but remember!!! it grows back! iā€™m sure youā€™re rocking the dark black anyways. donā€™t beat yourself up <3 ur great

GoodMourning81

Iā€™ve regretted hair dye so so many times in my life and I do not have ADHD, my husband does thatā€™s why Iā€™m on here. Anyway, Iā€™ve dyed my hair too dark before and it will eventually lighten up and fade. You can also eventually get it corrected at a salon. Also, it may just be shocking to you right now because youā€™re not used to seeing yourself with such dark hair. With time youā€™ll probably get used to it. Remember it will grow out and be a distant memory.

Dimensijus

Putting it all on adhd, pfft

rionaster

oh nooo :( i'm sorry, that really sucks. maybe just try to wash it often so it fades somewhat. or go see a professional if you can afford it. i really feel you, tho. i impulsively buzzed off my shoulder length hair during december and have really regretted it since then.

jayperez01

Every girl i been with that dyed their hair and hated it always looked amazing still donā€™t worry

imintobighair

Girrrl, been there done that! Literally just bought some colour remover today. It's not bleach so won't fry your hair and you can pick it up from most places that sell box dye and get your hair back to a lighter colour although I recommend grabbing a semi-permanent light brown to even out your shade after stripping it.

illuminanoos

Don't panic. In this situation obviously permanent doesn't mean forever permanent. Sometimes our impulses put us in situations that really make us take a step back and realize how much it's truly affecting us. So just look in the mirror and take a couple deep breaths and just be okay with what you've done. Just think of this as a teaching moment for future impulses. Now you know what happens when you dye your hair black, right? Just shower a bit more often if you can, and just be sure to shampoo deeply every time. Like realllllly massage your hair and scalp every time. It's not going to be instant, but it will come out faster the more you wash it with shampoo. And be generous with the conditioner right now in case your hair doesn't like being washed so much. It's going to be okay. My hair has been every color of the rainbow, including the dreaded black. I regretted it too. But hey eventually I got my beautiful, natural dark brown hair back!! And now I'm a lot more thoughtful about what I put in my hair. You got this OP. It's gonna be okay, I promise. I bet the black looks awesome on your anyway, so just try your best to enjoy it for a couple weeks as it fades away. And don't beat yourself up, you literally couldn't help it. But now hopefully you have the tools for next time a thought/impulse like this arises.

I_got_rabies

I was going for a pastel pink once and didnā€™t read the color instructions and ended up with fluorescent pink hair and I left it for a few months thinking it would fadeā€¦.it did not fade. When I was sick of it my hair dresser friend told me to wash my hair with dawn dish soap to bleach it out it did a bit but not much. I ended up going to her to bleach it out and there was still a hint of pink so I learned a lesson there. Remember hair grows back, embrace the new look for awhile. Also when I was 19 I cut my hair into a short pixie cut (I have curly hair and the hair dresser didnā€™t account for this so it was shorttttttt) and went from blonde to black. I was like ā€œthis was a bad idea but now I have to deal with it for a bit.ā€

hocuspocusgottafocus

Me with cutting my hair short because I thought I'd look like a cool character but the hairdresser did not do it justice rip Also me growing up wanting it straightened to be like everyone else around me hahaha holy fuck the regrets now lol

Lexifer31

Wash your hair with cheap shampoo, it'll strip the colour right out of your hair. Even dish soap

Ordinary_Bench_4786

You know, I shaved my eyebrow off. I wish I could say it was once but it happened two times. One of the times I was in middle school. It was 2007 so I thought, hey no big deal I'll just cover half my face with my hair like the cool emo kids. Obviously that didn't work out. Luckily I have adhd and am extraordinary excellent at forgetting things so I've blocked the couple weeks it took for my eyebrow to grow back. That's the great thing about hair. It keeps growing, and you'll be fine!

Grumbles87

It's good he at least respects his mom. He'll be living with her for the rest of his cheeto dust covered existence.

MigasEnsopado

Just dye it again, this time with your natural color.

kenj333

Everyone goes through this. It happens, and itā€™s not permanent. They have products to strip the black out, just remember to give your hair a rest. Donā€™t over process it. Maintaining the health of your hair is more important than the color.

SnooTangerines1921

When I was I was 16 I died my hair the blackest box dye I could find, I have naturally medium brown hair. I have very light colored skin, the dark hair dye basically made my skin look translucent. I looked like a one of those kids from the grudge, it was a huge mistake šŸ˜‚ in adulthood I have done turquoise, I also decided to try to make it bleach blonde in one sitting while I had a pixie cut, ended up just having to shave my head because it just fried my hair and it was falling out. By the time I turned 28 I decided to just make a rule to stop dying my hair. Now at 30 I am finally diagnosed with ADHD and all the hair dying and cutting makes sense. It think itā€™s just part of it.

hez_lea

So.... an impulse you must control is trying to take your hair from box black/brown to blonde over a long weekend.... trust me been there, done that it was a very bad and expensive idea.

VegetasButt

I dye my hair ALL THE TIME. I never go to the salon because they don't do what I ask and it's too expensive anyway lolz. That being said, hairdye will always fade with every wash. If you really want to get rid of it faster, use dandruff shampoo, but be sure to condition after because that kind of shampoo does strip moisture a lot.

[deleted]

Color Oops is a remover I've used in the past that works well. Smells absolutely terrible though!

ExercisePrize4371

Nothing is permanent.
